[Q] can someone help me with these niggles about my s4?

Firstly, on the whole, I love my s4. There are just a couple of niggles.
1) Google Music - on the s4 it stores the music on the 'internal sd' ie phone memory. The only way round this seems to be to root. As I have sky go, I would prefer not to have to root this phone.
2) storage space generally - ive vot a 64 gb card on order. Ideally I bad hoped to use some of this for music. The question is, with no apps to sd, no music for google music, what is the point in having an sd card?
If I could just get the music to work, id be happy. It is just unfortunate that I have a phone where I am worried there isnt enough space, and a 64gig card that cannot be used for anything!

Just move all the songs from the Music directory (or whatever directory Goggle puts them in) on the internal memory to the Music directory on the SD card. Create the Music directory on the root of the SD card if it does not exist. Then delete them on the internal storage. That's what we do for our Amazon purchased/downloaded music. The music app will automatically find them.

From having a look about it seems the files arent visible without root.
My question therefore still really exists. Unless rooted, what is the point of an sd card in an s4?

I currently link the Google Music uploader on my PC to my iTunes library so I can use the Google Music app with the cloud. I've come to really dislike the Google Music app so I'm happy this is forcing me to break free of it. I figured I would just use Samsung Kies and point it to my iTunes music folder and let it sync to the SD card (I ordered the 64GB SDXC one from Sandisk for $25 via Amazon Warehouse Deals). It can sync wirelessly via WiFi so that's a nice plus.
So with this setup I can use whatever music player I want, sync it with iTunes wirelessly, and not have to worry about what is in the cloud or on the device since it's all going on the SD card. I was initially worried about only having the 16GB model of the S4 until I thought through this process.

Even if Google hides its files, you can still load ripped CD's and other downloaded music to the SD card like I mentioned above.
Plug your S4 into your computer and do some searching of the internal memory for the songs Google downloaded. I'm surprised they would be hidden from the user like that. Could be, though.

Cloud Storage

I need help with Cloud Storage for my N4. I have an 8GB model and I have like 3 GB left of space, but I don't want to use that up since I have to leave some room for rooting with CWM, Titanium Backup, and a few ROM's. I want to put my music into cloud storage. How would I do that? What about my photos, documents, etc? I have Box and Dropbox for now. The music part is something that is important because I want to listen to my tunes on my phone.

You don't need to leave room for rooting, just your backups.
Far as cloud stuff, Google Play Music. Can just stream all your music that way (as I got over 24GB of music, I wouldn't put it all on my phone but I can stream it no problem with google music. )
Music is probably going to be the bulk of your storage, aside from that probably movies, which I'd stream too, either from cloud or from home PC.
I wish the Nexus 4 was compatible with USB-OTG (without the extra power adapter) because then I would just use an 8GB Thumbdrive like I do with my Nexus 7 and TWRP Recovery (which supports USB-OTG), since it will save my backups directly to the thumbdrive, as well as install roms and such from it, no space taken on the device to do it.

You have to download it onto your computer and sign in with your google account. It will let you pick which source it will sync and upload music from (in my case it takes from my iTunes library and uploads it into google). I think currently the limit is like 20,000 of your own songs on the cloud that you can stream to wherever you sign into be it the web or on google's music app on android.
If you go here: https://play.google.com/music/ you should see an "upload music" button on the top right, which on a PC or Mac will download the Music Manager.
It's similar to how iTunes match works, except free (but only supports Mp3, it'll convert aac and such to mp3 as it's uploading to the google cloud). You can set it to only upload that first time, or to upload each time you add new songs like if I add new songs to my iTunes library, it'll upload.
Just remember, on your phone if you "pin" an album, it saves that album locally to your phone so it will take up space if you pin it, but not if you just stream it.

Ok, thanks. 8 GB with no SD has people moving around to manage space. At least my apps don't eat up all my memory like some other people. I couldn't afford the 16 GB edition, but the 8GB model is fine enough for me. I love my N4 since I have been using it for just a week.

PS: The main annoying thing about Google Music is that they tend to add a "free" track/song to your library every so often. Which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing, if it was music that I actually liked. But you can always go over to the left on their site to "Free and Purchased", and just delete the free tracks you don't want as opposed to sorting thru your entire library.

Yea I know the feeling, I have both a 16GB Nexus 4 and 16GB Nexus 7 (I didn't have a choice on which Nexus 4 T-Mobile was selling, but 17/month for the phone ain't bad if you look at the 60$ higher price as interest on a loan).
For music on android, Google Music (I use iTunes Match for my iPad, but I haven't used it in a while since I got the Nexus 7, and I already have an iPod Nano 6th Generation that's 16GB).
For movies or videos, I usually stream off my home computer using Plex, it's rather handy once you get used to how to organize the folders and file names (Plex seems to prefer Files like "Movie Name (year)", and if there are any subtitles you just name them the same, TV series are usually "Show Name - s##e## - Optional Episode Name.avi")
But course now days a lot of people use stuff like netflix, hulu, crackle, etc, but plex is nice if it's something not available on those (plus it's free outside of the app for android/iOS/WindowsPhone).

[Q] Weird happening with my music

I've got a galaxy S4 running on Google Edition 4.4. I have always used MediaMonkey to add my music onto my device, last week I had added a bunch of new songs to my phone (onto the EXT SD card). I went to add some more today and I had noticed a bunch of songs missing according to MediaMonkey. I went onto the device with windows explorer and to my surprise couldn't locate a random chunk of the songs that I put on last week.
Oddly enough the Google music app can still see and play the songs on my device, but according to my PC they do not exist. The only way I can actually view all the missing songs is through ES File Explorer in which everything is in the music folder and seems fine.
View hidden files is enabled, did something mess up when the songs were copied over or what the heck happened?

playlist problem on rebooting

All of my music is on a 200gb sd card. In google play music I created a number of playlists over a couple of days. I recently rebooted phone and noticed that most of the playlists had lost all of their songs. Rebooted again and another couple of playlists went the same way.
The music still exists on the sd card. The artists and albums are still present in the Play Music library and still play ok.
Anyone else had this.......or even better, a solution
Edit - seems to occur after a power off and power on rather than a reboot

I have done a few tests and can now say that the problem only exists if the playlist points to music on sd card. If the playlist points to music on internal storage then rebooting the phone does not affect the playlist.
Therefore it seems likely that rebooting the phone causes the path to the music files (on the sd card) to change, so play music can no longer find the songs even though they still exist on the sd card.
PS......emailed Samsung Support, their reply was that rebooting the phone causes all of the music files on the device to be deleted (even though I explained that my music is on sd card not device memory and that the music files still exist, just they don't show up in the playlist)

What about trying another music player, or another playlist format (like M3U, but maybe for that u need another music player too)... in my personal experience, the music was the biggest problem because I feel like Goole Play Music is worst that windows media player xD, and actually find a good media player is so hard, but never tried GPM, so maybe is a problem from the app and no the phone itself

Yeah, using Poweramp now..........and I've found I prefer it to GPM so should be grateful that I had the problem

Yeah.. annoying as.. Wasted hours putting playlists together on Music Player only to have contents get deleted when power off / on.. Read something about being able to make sd card 'adoptable storage' by tweeking developer options.. may give this a try, but it involves formatting the current sd card, so plan to try when i have some time.. Google Play Music won't find my music

Hello.
For a long time now I haven't been able to listen to any music at all from my phone. This hasn't really bothered me because I rarely use it for music. Now I just discovered this again and I can't let it go, I cannot just leave this. I am irritated, frustrated and it's annoying the hell out of me.
Google Play Music (or any music app) won't find my music! I have put it in different folders and locations but nothing helps. I can't find my downloaded music either through Google Play Music. When it's downloaded the app tells me it's stored locally somewhere and it works offline, so it's on my phone somewhere (I know Play Music stores them in numeric names).
The odd thing is though, if I set a music file as my ringtone, Play Music will find the song under "Unknown artists" and "Unknown Albums". THIS is what irritates me, why can't it just find my Music folder?
I've tried a lot of things;
Formatted my phone and reinstalled it (even stock won't find it)
Cleared Cache and Dalvik
Reinstalled the app(s)
Tried different formats (.ogg, .m4a, .mp3 for example)
Used apps to "Rescan" my internal storage (media finder)
I had this issue on my old Samsung device with CM10. On my N6P I'm currently running PureNexus 6.0.1-20160803-OFFICIAL.
Whoever can help me with this will be my hero, trust me, this is so freaking annoying I'm actually considering buying an iPhone............... Alright, that was a little too extreme, I would never do that. That's just the frustration inside me talking.

I created a folder called Music that is in a location accessible when I plug my phone into the computer. I have my music organized as follows--artist folder/album folder/songs. My songs are all mp3 format, which works on Android. I use a third party music player (Black Player currently, Shuttle Music Player previously).. The music player automatically finds the albums I stored. I don't think Google's Music App works as a music player for your own music. Are you ripping your own music or downloading it or what? Do your music files have meta-tags that allow a music player to identify what the music is?

I've bought my music and ripped it to my computer. All meta-tags are present so that shouldn't be an issue. Like I said, the weird part is, if I add a song as my ringtone Google play music finds it, but I don't want to do that for each and every song I have haha.

It's weird that it has carried over on a clean flash. When you say your formatted the phone, did you also do the data partition? May be obvious, but the folder isn't hidden, is it? So the folder would be ".Music"? Or is there a file in there called ".nomedia"?

What music player are you using? I've had phones from HTC, Samsung, Motorola and Huawei and never experienced this problem. The fact that you had the exact same issue on 2 different phones suggests that you are doing something that is causing the problem, although its hard to see what. Your files aren't DRM protected if you are ripping them yourself. Maybe if you use a good third party music player it will find your music. I would stick to MP3 format on the files since that is compatible with Android. I had some files in Apple's format and had to convert them to MP3.

I've done a total clean format on my phone now, wiped everything including data/partition/storage. I have not done anything to the folder or renamed it. It's stilled called "Music" and there are no .nomedia files inside that specific folder (only in other folders that's not related at all).

What should I try? I tried PowerAmp or what it's called to see if it can locate my files but no success. The files are not DRM protected and I'm sticking to MP3 because like you said, higher probability it will find the files somehow.
I understand I might be the cause of this, and I don't mind it as long as I can understand what I'm doing xD As long as I know what's causing it I can let it go and remain peaceful, but as long as I have no idea what is causing this I will tear my hair off.

For it to persist across clean flashes and two different devices, there must be something in the folder that's buggering it up.
I would delete everything, then try copying some completely unrelated mp3's over to the same location to see if they're visible. If so, you know the problem is with the content. You can then go through this folder by folder until it stops working and you know what the culprit is.

I would try Black Player or Vanilla Music. Apparently you can use Google's app to play your own music but I'm not familiar with how that works. You do have a dedicated music folder called music, correct? What is the file path to your music folder? And how do you organize your music within that folder? Loose music tracks or folders for your artists and/or albums?

Then it must be the folder itself, as I've mentioned before I have already tried done a complete wipe of my internal storage to get it working but with no success. Can I change the path for android to search for my music?

Alright, so I downloaded BlackPlayer to try it out. It can't find any music files on my device at all. When I try to set a different search path (trying to select which folder the app should check for music) I can't even see my internal storage... This is really starting to worry me if my device might be faulty in some way (highly unlikely though because the device works perfectly fine with gallery and ES File explorer).
Within the Music folder I have it categorized in folders for example; /music/Children of bodom/Are you dead yet/ and then the songs from the album. I have also put some MP3 files directly into the Music folder to make sure the subfolders aren't messing with the apps.
So again, weird that BlackPlayer won't find any files at all and can't even recognize my internal storage. What can make this happen?
Edit: Just hit me, why don't I check the internal storage to see what's being used. In Settings>Storage & USB I can see that 1.08 GB worth of music is being used of my internal storage. When I click on it to see what files I have, I can only check something called "Unknown", inside that tab I have another folder called "Unknown" and inside THAT folder I can see my 3 custom ringtones..... What is going on?

You should check what the permissions are for your music folder. Root Explorer lets you check and change permissions for folders but costs 3.99. ES Explorer used to be good for this function as well but that program is a hot mess now. Do you have some kind of program on your phone that can check and change folder permissions? If Black Player can't find your music folder maybe read permissions aren't set properly for some reason.

I stopped using GPM a while ago. Such a battery hog and missing so many features. I use Sony music now. Has built in equalizer and album art finder. If u want to try it I can post the link

I want to use Google play music, I like the player and like I mentioned, it's not only Google play music that's causing this.

There's a flashable Zip that fixes file permissions on entire internal SD Card. Use the download link after the text, not the highlighted one within the text.

It might help. It sounds like the permissions on your internal storage might be screwy. I was hoping changing permissions on the single folder might fix it.

use blackplayer ex..... even i had the same issue and now since a year im useing this for music and its AMAZINGGG.......

I tried that but it didn't work... Same issue persist. I've found out though that VLC can recognize my files (through the explorer that belongs to VLC). When I play one of my songs to my car stereo through VLC the display say "fd://34" in the song title... What could this mean? The numbers change depending on the track, one is called fd://34 and the next one might be called fd://53 etc.

Blackplayer doesn't work either and I want to use Google Play Music since I've bought a couple of songs from them. Don't want to switch between different music apps. I also like Google Play Music the most out the majority of apps.

Are you sure your music tracks have proper metainformation? It sounds like VLC can't tell what any of your music is and is using a generic placeholder name. I would open some of your music on your computer with the free program Mp3tag and verify that information shows up in the title/artist/album fields. If the fields are blank then your music isn't tagged properly. You can also right click on a music file and go to the details tab but I prefer the Mp3tag program because if something is wrong it's easy to do the tags for an entire album at once. You didn't do anything unusual with the formatting of your data partition on the phone?

If the fields are blank then your music isn't tagged properly. You can also right click on a music file and go to the details tab but I prefer the Mp3tag program because if something is wrong it's easy to do the tags for an entire album at once. You didn't do anything unusual with the formatting of your data partition on the phone?

I've checked the metatags and it's all fine. Everything is there.
I thought so as well about the VLC thing. But yet again, with all the metatags there, how come it can't recognize anything? Seems so weird.
No, I don't think I did. I'm using TWRP right now and I do a clean wipe using the options inside that. Before TWRP I used CWM, same issue persisted though. I appreciate your help so much, I'm trying my best here to figure it out but it helps a lot with your ideas! Just like to say that so I don't seem ungrateful
