AT&T Branding - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So, I hate my phones being branded with the AT&T logo. I went to one of my local AT&T stores today, and they told me what I expected: that even if I ordered an unsubsidized phone over the tele, that they'd still be branded with their logo.
Looking online at Negri Electronics SGH-I337 (unlocked), they are all unbranded (but they're also not yet in stock). I was wondering if all that was just a ruse, un-updated pictures that'll be corrected when they first list the phone as "in stock", or, heaven forbid, the true UNBRANDED phone that I covet so? Anyone order an AT&T phone from Negri before?
Here's to hoping it won't be branded!

Why not just get the AT&T version then replace the back cover with one that's not branded?

Are they only branded on the back? Last AT&T phone I bought had the logo and name on the front, and the logo again on the back.
Thanks for the idea though, I was about to drop an extra $50 for something I didn't need.
I suppose back covers will be easy enough to get soon anyways. :fingers-crossed:

The logo would probably come off with nail polish or Goo Gone. Either that or cover it with a case. I'd personally go with the one I could save the most money on. Just wait until Verizon comes out with theirs with the logo on the button .

Yeah... That kind of stuff just sickens me. Why do you have to go ruin a perfectly beautiful phone with your logo, when you had NOTHING to do with research/development/production/advertising/etc?
Yeah, I tried the whole penny scratch-off thing before, and it scratched the **** out of my glass... Don't ever want to try removing that stuff again.

I don't disagree with this at all, but it sounds like you never had an SIII where the branding was identical, just a small ATT globe logo on the back of the phone, nothing on the front.... you must have had one sharp penny to scratch the glass! Pennies are what everyone used to get them off the battery cover on the SIII, and while I don't care enough to spend time modifying that when I have a car dock to get working, I like saving the stock battery covers for resale in the end, so I'm leaving this one mint and getting a new one to ruin over time - my aftermarket SIII battery door is going in the trash and the stock one that had never been installed is going to the new owner when I sell it on eBay this week!

Im Covered Right?

I got my G1 @ the end of January, and I have never dropped it or anything, there is not 1 scratch on it. The problem im having is with the space bar, when I press it, sometimes it doesnt register, and when it does it usually registers as I pressed it twice, and its getting annoying. I should be able to get a new 1 without having to pay right? Its under warranty(should b) and I have insurance(u still have to pay, idn y I have it), but I should be able to get a free new 1 with my warranty right?
You want get a NEW one...but you will get a use one.

Okay, so lemme put my input on this...
I've been a T-Mo customer of 5 yrs, and have had 6 or 7 G1's since launch (creaky screen, bad WiFi MAC addresses, trackball stopped working). So i can tell you, that you will almost DEFINITELY get a used one, they typically don't ship new ones out if they have "reconditioned" ones in stock. You really won't notice the difference, honestly. But the first thing you MUST do, is reflash the original OS onto it, they will charge your account full price of the G1 if they find you have broken the software warranty by installing a rooted or other than official build on the device. So be prepared to do that.

[email protected] pretty gay if I get a used one, I kno I wont notice, but I like having things like my phone new, but yea I kno about flashing back the original rom etc
Think of it this way. Whatever the phone was exchanged for, they replaced. As well as any scratched/cracked plastic parts that may have been on the other phone. They do everything they can to make it LOOK new. But remember this, too, you'll have to keep your original back. And trust me, mine looks like crap, it's the original one i got on October 20th. With a phone I got in like, March. So it looks off with the colors. But there's not much that can be done about that, because they pretty much never send a new one out. And for the longest time, you couldn't even do exchanges on White or Black ones because they had NO stock to replace it with, simply because they were selling so many of them, they couldn't put any into the replacement pool, new or old. But I have a bronze, so I've never had to worry about that, there's tons of those to recirculate. But trust me, you won't notice any difference, any problems (like the creaky screen) that have had any kind of revision to the whole device, will be done already, so many parts will be new. Maybe the internals are the only old part, but you won't notice that either, because they're putting the same stuff in the ones released in October that they're putting in them now. You'll be good. Plus, they might have 1.5 already on the device when you get it, so you may be in a better spot than the rest of us.
Yeah, reconditioned/refurbished.

What do u mean id have to keep my original back? my whole phone has shield skinz so it wuld suck since I have 2 take it off and get a new 1, but idc bout the 1.5 since im usings Haykuros anyway
I dunno anything about that skin or anything (it took me a lot for me to get a rubber skin for my iPod), but yes, you keep YOUR original back that was shipped with the first G1 you bought, and they (for the 5 years I've been with T-Mobile) send you just the phone. No battery, no back cover, no SD card, no accessories. You get a little brown box with 2 foam inserts, and freely bouncing inside that is your replacement G1. You put all your original stuff into that G1, and put your original G1 into the box, slap the return label on top of the shipping label, put the tamper evident sticker over the part where the box opens, and take it to a UPS center. Or you could pay like, 10 bucks or whatever for UPS to pick it up (i coulda sworn back in 2004 they would come get it without you having to pay, but the world/economy has changed since 2004)
My USB went faulty and they sent me a replacment last month or so. I called Tmo about it and they conected me to a Blackberry rep. No idea why it was Blackberry rep that took care of me but whatever. He also even said he'll send me a new one. Sure enough 3 days later a new one showed up. It had the plastic screens on the lcd and back. When I pulled the plastic off the back, it wasnt rubbed or scratched from opening and closing the screen.

Damn I guess things do change, when I had a Sidekick 2, my keyboard got messed up, so I called, they sent me a brand new 1 with everything, new sim card, a brand new unopened box, I put my old 1 in the pouch they gave me with the shipping label for it, and I left it outside for the mailman. Y cant we have that now?

Mayb I gotta ask 4 a Blackberry rep then?
Actually it doesn't matter either way who u ask for... the PDA Group of support is officially the WinMo/BlackBerry/Android reps now... they do not have a SPECIFIC place in support for the G1. Sometimes they'll say G1, but trust me, i have the direct 877 number... Try it urself, 877-816-8601. Little did the rep realize that gave that number to me, it puts you in FRONT of any que on the phones. So you get to a rep in under 3 minutes. =) Shh, i didn't give that out though. At any rate, things have changed in years, and the Sidekick II (had one of them, and a 3, and an MDA, Wing, and now have SK 2008, SK Slide, WebConnect AND a G1) was a completely self-contained, sealed device like the iPhone. All you did was slide a SIM card in under the bumper and everything else was for T-Mobile to fix if something went bad. Which was rare on the SKII (mine never had a problem over a yr period)

Ahaha thanks 4 [email protected] number, and yea I owned 2 Sidekick IIs(1 replacement), 2 Sidekick 3s(friend gave me 1, and I bought 1), a Wing, and now G1, and I love my G1 the most, the Sidekicks kinda got old for me, and every1 around me started gettin them so I had to change [email protected]
just gonna throw this out there, if you make a big enough deal and blabber on about your loyalty to them as a customer they will eventually send you a "full kit" just to shut you up(i know it i did it once) that way you will be recieving a brand new phone straight out of the box no one has ever touched anything on it.
Well THAT is interesting. I go on and on for 10 mins about how loyal of a customer I am and they've NEVER sent me a full kit. Damn. I even told them the back to my G1 isn't staying on as easily anymore and they told me I'll have to BUY one... Right.
i've been with t-mobile for 7 or 8 years and been with AT&T for 3

Remove carrier branding off your phone?

The Samsung Vibrant looks like an awesome phone and I might pick one up. But I would like to know if it is possible to remove the T-Mobile branding (or any other branding for that matter).
*DISCLAIMER* Please do not try to remove the branding off of your phone if you do not know what you are doing (which is probably most of us). I will not be responsible for any damages that you or your phone might incur.
With that being said, my first suggestion would be to find out if the front case can be replaced just as easily as the back case. Can anyone confirm this?
If replacements for the front covers exist , that gives us some room to experiment. On the other hand, if it is not possible to swap it out then this whole idea could be too risky for most.
Also, can someone confirm if the branding is laser-etched onto the phone case?
I was thinking about something like that too.
Now we have to wait till we have more info on the phone
I believe the front branding is actualy under the glass layer, probably the only option would be to buy a replacement screen ? Not sure if you could get under there to remove the branding. Its some kind of metalic material.
All the branding seems printed, not etched.

Yep, this is what it looks like to me too.
I wish carriers and manufacturers would learn some taste from Apple and keep their sets cleaner. AT&T was basically not allowed to stick their logo on the iPhone, and design and good taste only benefited from it.
This is why I bought the unbranded Galaxy S, so I don't end up with some ugly carrier logo on the face of my phone (I wish the Samsung logo stayed on the back too).
This has really been annoying me. Not only is it branded, they doubled up. Carrier on top, manufacturer on bottom. Totally unnecessary and very ugly. I love that my Pre has very little branding on it, and none at all on the front of the phone.
I'm not stupid, I don't need to be reminded that it was made by Samsung every time I look at it.
Does Samsung sell replacement front covers for the Galaxy s? If so, it might just be as easy as swapping your branded cover with an unbranded Galaxy s one.
Don't forget that you can always go tacky by using the good ol' black sharpie.
Do you know how much it decreases in value on ebay once you take a sharpie to the logo?

Note: Your phone will not be activated when it arrives. Please follow the instructions included in the box to activate it.
Web specials do not apply when upgrading to a pre-owned device. You’ll instead benefit from maintaining your current upgrade eligibility status.
I was just coming to post this.
I may buy one or two just to root and mess around with.
Worth a shot anyways.
It seems a deal! Better than the one I brought from craigslist, paid $100 without sdcard and headset.
BTW, I don't have to activate it, right?
I'm thinking about getting one. I dropped my Hero last week and scratched it up pretty badly (I was going to swap housing, but I don't want to bother with that). I'd use the refurb as my daily, with my other Hero as a testing device

I just ordered one. I had the option to have it pre-activated but I chose not to do that. I'm trying to get my husband on the Android bandwagon and this was a cheap way to do it. (He's currently in our family plan with a BB but wants to jump ship to ATT and Iphone. ugh, I know right?) If he hates it, I have a backup Hero and I did not have to extend my contract.
ordering mine tomorrow, went from a htc vogue with android hacked on to it, to a blackberry curve and now to an htc hero till my upgrade kicks in, never again shall i upgrade to a blackberry....piece of crap
looks like they must have sold out of the refurb heroes... :/
sadly wasn't able to order my phone that night due to mail holiday keeping me from getting my debit card on time but called sprint and was told they would have them back in stock on thursday

i emailed their customer support and im waiting for respond, ill keep you guys updated
I looked yesterday and today and could not find any Refurb'ed Heros, there were some others. Wish I had seen this earlier, would have been nice to get one for my daughter.
yeah i checked into it again, won't have any for a while :/ i suggest you look into ebay if you want to try, alot of reliable sellers.
Keep looking... it's definitely worth doing.
Mine came in a Sprint OEM "Certified Pre-owned" box, packaged as if it were new. The only thing missing was an SD card (heck, it would be just 2Gb which is worthless anyhow) and a printed full manual. The phone looks brand new, except for one minor flaw--a tiny dent on the speaker grille. Otherwise, you wouldn't know this was refurbished.
The battery is in a small plastic bag with a sticker closure. It was not charged, so the phone required the full charging time to get going.
i found some from ebay that were bought up from sprint by bestbuy.
I just looked on eBay for a private party selling a Hero. I hate buying from the jerks too lazy to post real pictures of the product. I'm not buying a new phone, so why would I ever buy anything without being able see exactly what I'm really getting?
Anyhoots I won an auction for one the guy says is 4 months old for $133. Just watched for auction ending in a few minutes that fit what I wanted, placed my bid, 10 minutes later I had won.
Not refurbished, and more than $79, but I'm sure my daughter will love it.
Nice job, sadly my paypal account is locked because i forgot about it and never put in my information, i went looking for people selling and accepting non paypal purchases, i ends tomorrow so hopefully i win, it's refurbished.
Here you go guys,

should be about 11 up, most are bids but 2 of em can be bought directly and shipped out.

verizon not replacing broken samsung fascinate

so i just spoke to a verivon rep named sandy. i was looking to get a replacment device. verizon no longer offers warranty replacements they offer you droid x, lg ally, lg vortex. hmmmmm yes thats a FAIR trade
As a tech rep I can say this is wrong.only reason we replace with a different device is if we are out of stock
well this might aply to me cause i have the white ssf
Wasn't the White Fascinate only available though Best Buy? I'd take it there.

Yes, it was Best Buy only, so if you want it replaced under warranty, you'll likely either need to contact Best Buy or Samsung.
So what your saying is Verizon can replace your phone, just not give you the limited edition device that you did not buy directly from Verizon, but because you have this super special one of a kind device you expect that company that didn't sell it to you to replace it? I hate to break it to you, but that is one thing that comes with having those one of a kind devices, now mind you, I have the White Fascinate, but if Verizon doesn't have any of those in stock, am I going to be bummed? Sure I am, but am I going to get a my undies in a knot, heck no! I take the fact that they are not the ones that sold the device to me, and take what I can get, but if I really want the white one, I would go to Best Buy or Samsung. Your title is very misleading, should be titled, verizon will not replace my broken limited edition white samsung fascinate
They JUST replaced mine with a Droid 2, but gave me the option for another Fascinate.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Not to mention, Best Buy offers protection that would have allowed you to get a white one as a replacement if yours couldn't be repaired. If you opted not to get it and use Verizon's insurance or the warranty from Samsung only then you are responsible for that decision and can live with the consequences.

Sorry, but I just have to ask. Why the heck would anyone want a white Fascinate? It will show grime way to easily, and it looks way too much like a certain competing product. Also, I've looked at them in Best Buy, and they just look weird. If the phone was all white, I'd understand, but the way the back is white and the front is still black just looks goofy to me.
Anyway, back on topic, even if they can't replace it with another white one, there shouldn't be any reason at all why they can't replace it with an ordinary black model. If the person you talk to refuses to do so, I would either hang up and call back to get a different tech, or in the case of a retail store setting, either come back another day or find another store. If its urgent to get a replacement immediately, I would demand to speak with the store manager to get some appropriate service. I'm sorry, but there's absolutely no way they can legitimately claim that an LG Ally is an equivalent replacement for a Fascinate.

I at first would agree with you on why would you want one, when I went into Best Buy, I went in wanting the black one but they were out of stock, and it was a sale for the Fascinate at $50, so overall it didn't matter to me what I got, all I cared about was just getting the device. But now that I have the white one, it looks pretty slick to me, but I personally wouldn't throw a fit if I needed a replacement and they sent me a black one.
Yeah if its white we replace with black with back or send you to samsung
Working for Verizon I can also say that that is completely bull... Sounds like you talked to a newbie or possibly you were at an indirect dealer and working with some sort of non verizon insurance
Just call samsung galaxy s support! My wife has the white fascinate and when her phone broke(hardware issue) we had to send it to samsung. The bad news! They had it for over a week and ended up replacing it with a new device. We were told her original phone could not be repaired, but if you ask me I think they lost it. We called them after 3days and they said they would call us back in 24hrs. 3days later we called back and they said they were sending her a new one. Oh well a new one is better.than refurbished anyday. We also bought it at best buy on black friday. It was $0 W/contract.

Fixing back panel crack with JOD

Does anyone have experience with a cracked back panel and being on JOD? I am thinking about attempting to replace it but, it does have the IMEI listed. Does anyone know of a back case manufacturer that can add the IMEI as well? If all else fails I am pretty good with the guys at my local T-Mobile, I may just try to convince them to say it happened at trade in, or put like a D-Brand Skin on it and see if I can get it past them that way.
Thanks in advance

I don't have experience with JOD particularly, but would like to caution you against trying trickery that you mentioned. Even if you put a skin, they'll remove it to try and put this in the refurbished stock, see the crack and charge you for repairs. As for the IMEI, it really doesn't matter. If I'm not mistaken, it is just a sticker. When I got my phone back after a Samsung repair, it was removed anyways.
And finally, regarding your idea about getting local reps to lie that all was ok and stating it was damaged in transit, we do not promote such deception in xda. But it is up to you if you want to go ahead and try it out. As this is definitely a physical damage, better own up to it and pay for it. Since it is for the back panel, it'll probably be around $70 (directly from Samsung, front glass is $270). It might be a lot cheaper if repaired somewhere else.
Sincere apologies if I sound like a douche, but that's the best advice I can give you.

Thank you for the advice, the IMEI is apart of the back panel not just the sticker thing, but actually apart of the back. I've found back panels on Amazon for like $10, maybe I will call Samsung and see if the repaired versions have the IMEI.
This was very helpful.

Just get it fixed, t-mobile(and almost any phone company I've deal with) will accept most of these phones as long as it doesnt show physical damage. I used to work for a phone repair shop in NYC and they(literally the guys at the T-Mo/Sprint/ATT stores) would send guys over to fix their phone before they would accept it as a trade in.
they include imei sticker int he box for reasons like this.
The imei is in the phone harness.
phone app *#06#
So when they do a trade in or any work on your phone. All they need to do is put in that code and it will being up th imei and they can move on.
But since it crack and you try the jump. They will either charge you the insurance claim price/ not give you the full amount for it. leaving you to pay the different before you get the new phone
Other then that it doesnt matter if the imei on the back is gone. the phone will be refub once it leaves your hands.
Broke mine too .. $60 at local repair shop

Very interesting, I have found backs on Amazon for like $10 bucks. Not sure if they're really that great or not but, I will give that a try. Worst case they turn me down and I am stuck with the phone for a couple years.

As long as they're glass and has the Samsung logo on it, it'll be fine. Make sure you also get some decent double sided adhesives for it, or get the specific adhesives cutout for the S7E that you can just slap on. I usually use redline tapes, they're slightly better than scor-tapes imo.
Just replace it. Amazon and eBay have it for $25-$30. All you need is a blow dryer.
