I got my G1 @ the end of January, and I have never dropped it or anything, there is not 1 scratch on it. The problem im having is with the space bar, when I press it, sometimes it doesnt register, and when it does it usually registers as I pressed it twice, and its getting annoying. I should be able to get a new 1 without having to pay right? Its under warranty(should b) and I have insurance(u still have to pay, idn y I have it), but I should be able to get a free new 1 with my warranty right?
You want get a NEW one...but you will get a use one.
yes you are something similar happend to my wife G1 called tmobile explain the problem and they send her a new one like in 3 days free shipping.

Thanks, hopefully they will do the same for me
Okay, so lemme put my input on this...
I've been a T-Mo customer of 5 yrs, and have had 6 or 7 G1's since launch (creaky screen, bad WiFi MAC addresses, trackball stopped working). So i can tell you, that you will almost DEFINITELY get a used one, they typically don't ship new ones out if they have "reconditioned" ones in stock. You really won't notice the difference, honestly. But the first thing you MUST do, is reflash the original OS onto it, they will charge your account full price of the G1 if they find you have broken the software warranty by installing a rooted or other than official build on the device. So be prepared to do that.

[email protected] pretty gay if I get a used one, I kno I wont notice, but I like having things like my phone new, but yea I kno about flashing back the original rom etc
Think of it this way. Whatever the phone was exchanged for, they replaced. As well as any scratched/cracked plastic parts that may have been on the other phone. They do everything they can to make it LOOK new. But remember this, too, you'll have to keep your original back. And trust me, mine looks like crap, it's the original one i got on October 20th. With a phone I got in like, March. So it looks off with the colors. But there's not much that can be done about that, because they pretty much never send a new one out. And for the longest time, you couldn't even do exchanges on White or Black ones because they had NO stock to replace it with, simply because they were selling so many of them, they couldn't put any into the replacement pool, new or old. But I have a bronze, so I've never had to worry about that, there's tons of those to recirculate. But trust me, you won't notice any difference, any problems (like the creaky screen) that have had any kind of revision to the whole device, will be done already, so many parts will be new. Maybe the internals are the only old part, but you won't notice that either, because they're putting the same stuff in the ones released in October that they're putting in them now. You'll be good. Plus, they might have 1.5 already on the device when you get it, so you may be in a better spot than the rest of us.
Yeah, reconditioned/refurbished.

What do u mean id have to keep my original back? my whole phone has shield skinz so it wuld suck since I have 2 take it off and get a new 1, but idc bout the 1.5 since im usings Haykuros anyway
I dunno anything about that skin or anything (it took me a lot for me to get a rubber skin for my iPod), but yes, you keep YOUR original back that was shipped with the first G1 you bought, and they (for the 5 years I've been with T-Mobile) send you just the phone. No battery, no back cover, no SD card, no accessories. You get a little brown box with 2 foam inserts, and freely bouncing inside that is your replacement G1. You put all your original stuff into that G1, and put your original G1 into the box, slap the return label on top of the shipping label, put the tamper evident sticker over the part where the box opens, and take it to a UPS center. Or you could pay like, 10 bucks or whatever for UPS to pick it up (i coulda sworn back in 2004 they would come get it without you having to pay, but the world/economy has changed since 2004)
My USB went faulty and they sent me a replacment last month or so. I called Tmo about it and they conected me to a Blackberry rep. No idea why it was Blackberry rep that took care of me but whatever. He also even said he'll send me a new one. Sure enough 3 days later a new one showed up. It had the plastic screens on the lcd and back. When I pulled the plastic off the back, it wasnt rubbed or scratched from opening and closing the screen.

Damn I guess things do change, when I had a Sidekick 2, my keyboard got messed up, so I called, they sent me a brand new 1 with everything, new sim card, a brand new unopened box, I put my old 1 in the pouch they gave me with the shipping label for it, and I left it outside for the mailman. Y cant we have that now?

Mayb I gotta ask 4 a Blackberry rep then?
Actually it doesn't matter either way who u ask for... the PDA Group of support is officially the WinMo/BlackBerry/Android reps now... they do not have a SPECIFIC place in support for the G1. Sometimes they'll say G1, but trust me, i have the direct 877 number... Try it urself, 877-816-8601. Little did the rep realize that gave that number to me, it puts you in FRONT of any que on the phones. So you get to a rep in under 3 minutes. =) Shh, i didn't give that out though. At any rate, things have changed in years, and the Sidekick II (had one of them, and a 3, and an MDA, Wing, and now have SK 2008, SK Slide, WebConnect AND a G1) was a completely self-contained, sealed device like the iPhone. All you did was slide a SIM card in under the bumper and everything else was for T-Mobile to fix if something went bad. Which was rare on the SKII (mine never had a problem over a yr period)

Ahaha thanks 4 [email protected] number, and yea I owned 2 Sidekick IIs(1 replacement), 2 Sidekick 3s(friend gave me 1, and I bought 1), a Wing, and now G1, and I love my G1 the most, the Sidekicks kinda got old for me, and every1 around me started gettin them so I had to change [email protected]
just gonna throw this out there, if you make a big enough deal and blabber on about your loyalty to them as a customer they will eventually send you a "full kit" just to shut you up(i know it i did it once) that way you will be recieving a brand new phone straight out of the box no one has ever touched anything on it.
Well THAT is interesting. I go on and on for 10 mins about how loyal of a customer I am and they've NEVER sent me a full kit. Damn. I even told them the back to my G1 isn't staying on as easily anymore and they told me I'll have to BUY one... Right.
i've been with t-mobile for 7 or 8 years and been with AT&T for 3

My six-month old Cingular 8525 now has the loose stylus problem so I phoned AT&T for a replacement. (I know this sounds kind of anal but I also know a lot of perple who hang out on xda-developers are particular about their devices...)
To make a long story short, the refurb looks like crap! The black stripe between the screen and keyboard has scrapes on it, the seam between the back grey plastic casing and the black stripe has obvious screwdriver damage where the casing has been pried apart, and the back side of the screen has lots of scrapes from sliding open and closed.
The only good things I can say about the refurb are the LCD overlay looks new and it is AT&T branded. I have not even bothered to install a battery and turn it on.
The phone I take such good care of looks worlds better than this one. I took it to my local store and they agree with me and have noted the account so when I call the warranty department they will hopefully send me a better one (why not just send a new one and get it over with )
Is my experience typical? When I was with Sprint I remember getting a couple of refurbs and they looked brand-new.
EDIT: My local AT&T store has been great to work with, making calls to the warranty department, etc. but have not offered to replace the phone (yet?)
No your experience is NOT typical.. I have a Refurb 8525 and it looks BRAND new.. nothing at all is wrong with it.. what you CAN do is call them and tell them something is wrong with the one they sent you and they will send you another one.

Yes and if memory serves me right, there are standards in the official HTC Service Manual for refurb devices. I seem to remember reading very precise criteria on what is acceeptable in terms of blemishes and what is not.
The service manual is available for download at my web link below.
Mike
I have gotten my 8125 replace last year and it look brand new. I just recently got my 8525 replace and it also looked new too.
I returned my 3 month old Cingular 8525 because the Micro SD card slot wouldn't work anymore (physically not holding the cards in). I received what appeared to be a brand new AT&T branded 8525, no problems with it. It even had the new ROM flashed to it, which had only been officially released for a week or two at that point.
No problems with my refurb either - looks and responds like brand new.
I wouldn't say it was intentional they shipped out a very much used machine - but I would definitely question their QC that one that badly used slipped back into the consumer base. Contact a manager and if no help, keep climbing the ladder until you reach someone who WILL help.
Good luck!
A local store manager looked at the phone and noted the account. I called the warranty folks again and after being transferred several times they are sending me a new phone, which I should get tomorrow. I wonder what OS will be on it?
EDIT: I just booted a brand-new 8525 and it came with WM5 and the 1.40 radio. Time to flash away...
i sent of my phone with a keyboard that was sticking
due to me dropping marmalade onto it
anyway i told them, that the keyboard din't work, i was having problems with call quality, and there was cosmetic damage
t-mobile agreed to fix the keyboard for me, and that only
so i sent it off
an 2weeks later
it came back,
with a new screen, new mainboard, new case, new stylus, new batter, new battery cover
everything on it is new
so much so, then have sent me a certificate to confirm that my IMEI number has changed due to the ammount of work done on the phone
at the time of sending it off, it had a hungarian windows mobile 5 rom on it, as i couldnt find a english version at the time of downgrading
so t-mobile, reflashed it for me
so if anyone is with them, i would recommend if you have any problems
phone up
and tell them you want it fixing, and don't lie to them, just bend the truth a little, and maybe you will get as lucky as me
plus i was also told, all MDA vario's from t-mobile have a 24month warranty with t-mobile
=D
aye they did a similar thing with me. before i got into xda-devs i had some righ5t probs with me hermes.
well i took the first one back and then they replased that. cant remember the fault mind. that one went wrong so they replaced that and then this next one went wrong again! called them up complaining and apparently if they repair a phone 3 times you can ask for a totally different phone to replace it. asked how much the kaiser would be and they said 30 quid and could be with you tomorrow. i was a very happy man and now i got a hermes and a kaiser!
they never asked for the hermes back either so always a bonus eh.
so any you guys got any probs out there even if its tiny get on the phone to t-mobile. could soon have a kaiser for 30 quid!
I work for T-Mobile and it's HTC policy to replace rather than repair a faulty unit under warranty.
As long as the engineer who looks at it doesn't determine it as damaged they always send out a refurbished unit.
sweet
so new fone
an hmm, yh i think the screen is going a bit unsensative on this one
*wink*
lol kasier for £30 ull be my new years gift
haha
Has anybody had experience removing a screen scratch from their hd2?
i've only had mine for 5 days and its got a massive scratch on the screen, don't even know how it happened, i always keep my phones in a glasses baggy, my iphone is still mint after 18 months but today i was watching some youtube clips on my break and the screen was perfect, then put it on charge at work and when i came back to it it was really badly scratched, not sure if someone decided to have a look at it and dropped it while i wasn't there but needless to say i'm gutted, i was thinking of sending it back to o2 coz it has a few problems, random letters on typing and stuck messages, not sure if they'll accept it back even as faulty with this big scratch, any advice as to what o2 do with faulty phones? do they check them, bin them or fix them? it was bought over the phone btw, will they just write it off and send a new one because of the problems?
please help
I think you will struggle to get it replaced under warranty with a fat scratch, even if it didn't work at all, let alone a few issues that are (apparently) solved by updates.
Do you have any cctv at work? I'd be spitting mad and hunting for the culprit!
there is cctv but not in my department, and lots of people come in and out,
worst case scenario if o2 won't accept it back as faulty they'll just send it back as it is,
and if i'm lucky i'll get a replacement?
just been giving the screen a rub with some t cut and it seems to be helping with most of the scratch, there is just a 5 mm part that is deeper than the rest, do you think that would affect an exchange?
Maybe, you`ve got nothing to lose.....
Gotta be worth a try. Chances are they're only going to flash a new rom and ship it back anyway. Course, if you have insurance it COULD go missing....
insurance is what my work mate said, any recomendations for someone cheap but with full cover?
Just for the record, the random letters on typing and stuck messages thing probably won't be enough to get you a new device. These flaws are all over the place. HTC will tell you the 1.66 rom will solve those problems. And the 'not quite aligned screen' is also a thing that pops up here on a regular basis.
Hope you succeed.
Hello guys, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I have a very similar problem except without the scratched screen. The details are over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627374
Basically, I sent it to HTC and it came back much worse than it was when I sent it to them. What can I do now? Send it back to HTC again or would O2 be better? Is there a way I can get a new phone?
Thx.
If you return it to O2, they'll courier out a new one and pick the "faulty" one up at the same time, so you would get a new phone straight away - they did this with my first HD2 which didn't recognise SIM cards.
What they do with the "faulty" one once it's couriered back is anyone's guess. You could be lucky and it just goes in a big faulty pile to be sent back to HTC. I would deny that it was scratched if they phone you up about it, but that's quite naughty.
Awesome, thanks elyl .
My phone isn't scratched in the first place. Hope it works out for the original poster too.

what department at o2 did you use to get a courier exchange , what did you ask for and what problem did your phone have so that they exchanged it, cheers
sometimes the couriers themselves check out the goods if you are returning faulty handsets that have supposedly have no physical damage. ive had this happen to me a few times with my business units.
i would send it back to O2 anyway... if you have only had the handset for five days, explain that the screen is not "perfect". Its all about how you word it on the return form. Put down your other issues also.
This way when the courier turns up with your new handset and checks the goods and the return form (IF he has one) he will have no choice but to oblige.

Before I divulge this story I don't endorse this sort of thing.
My mate got the HD2 on an upgrade through O2, he sat on it within 24hrs and got a smudge on the screen, called them up and claimed there was a fault with the screen; which they then sent a brand new replacement. This promptly arrived and then by shear idiocy he managed to put it the through the washing machine the next day!
The device turns on but the back light has shorted, so you can see the GUI but only under strong light and it is basically unreadable. He will get insurance via O2 then claim next month saying he lost it. However the insurance does cost 10 pound a month; but still cheaper than 500...

Am I the only one who finds the people who break their phones and then try to weasel their way into a new, free handset annoying as hell?
My local HTC center used to offer courier exhanges for all HTC products, but not anymore. I called 'em up the other day to get my phone exchanged and they told me they no longer do it because people were abusing the service.

no... you are not the only one who finds unscrupulous antics extremely irritating.
however,... some of the stories i hear are so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh.
the irony of it is, that when i ordered the phone it went through ok and the money came off my card, then i got a text a few hours after the order, saying they were out of stock, i rang a few days later to see when they expected fresh stock and the girl i spoke to re ordered it for me, 2 days later 2 phones arrived at my house delivered as one shipment, i could have sold one phone but being honest i rang o2 and explained they'd made a mistake, i sent one phone back the next morning,
my phone also has the landscape/portrait problems in internet explorer and calender apps, where if i open in portrait and switch to landscape the screen flicks back and forth fast until i pull the battery, i planned to send it for an exchange anyway as my mate who has one at work has none of my phones problems, its just my luck it got scratched
This may have been discussed before but I just wanted to inform you guys on my experience.
So I purchased my EVO 6/16 and I absolutely loved it!! At first glance it was everything I expected an more. I looked a little closer at the device and I noticed quite a bit of things
1) Screen was not properly seated
2) Battery life was somewhat suspect (even with NO task manager and NO syncing)
3) a bit jittery when swiping from one screen to another (compared to that of replacement and my Nexus One)
4) Random buttons seemed to have been activated when pressing the power button (mostly the camera button)
5) Screen responsiveness was a bit off
So the above issues were just a few I noticed from my OLD EVO. Now this may be somewhat of an "Placebo Effect" of getting a new Evo. The phone they gave me today feels a bit different. Both phones has the Build (003) I jotted down all of the numbers I could and nothing seems different as far as build is concerned, however we all know quality control in different batches can vary from time to time but not by much (or at least shouldn't)
REVIEW OF EVO I RECEIVED 6/22 FROM SPRINT:
I went to the Sprint store on Monday 6/21, to exchange my OLD Evo because I was a lil disappointed with the above issues they inspected the device and said you are right the screen is not seated correctly. Of course the screen responsiveness worked perfectly for the rep lol. The manager came out and said he'd put me on the waiting list and I'd receive a new one as soon as they came in. I got a call less then 24-hrs later stating they had some in. So of course I jumped for joy dropped my son off at daycare and went to the sprint store to grab another Evo. It took about an hr because of the amount of people up there. I handed over my old Evo and got a new Evo. I asked to hold both in my hand because I read somewhere were a sprint rep tried to act like he exchanged a phone and changed all the stickers inside to make it seem like it was a new phone. So after I looked carefully at the numbers I had written down I held both in my hand and compared the screens. Rubbing my fingers on both screens on the left hand corner and side. As to no ones surprise what do you think happened!! DUH, the damn screen was coming up and the manager says, "WHAT THE HELL". So of course I get the new Evo and I get a brand new charger and kept my old one for my troubles per Manager.
So while keeping the above issues in mind, the new devices is showing absolutely NO light leakage and when I say NONE I mean NONE! No left corner. NO leakage above the 4 soft buttons, no nothing! Phone seems very responsive to every touch where you barely have to tap the button and it'll activate. This may be caused by the screen being properly seated unlike the previous one I had. Battery is still suspect however that is something I am willing to live with because I know what the phone can do and what it takes to perform those task. If anyone has any additional questions please PM me or ask here.
I know this is pretty lengthy but I really need to start giving back to XDA because, indirectly, you guys have done so much for me.
There all different
I called the Sprint store where I bought my phone, just a moment ago, and told them about how my screen is also starting to come up, you can see light around the edges of the phone, as if the screen is comming up and letting light out. not only that but even when I turn the phone off, and its real dark, I can see light underneath the soft keys, NOTHING IS TURNED ON THERE SHOULD BE NO LIGHT ON WHEN THE PHONE IS OFF!!! ya, kinda had to get that through to someone. anyway he told me to call a "repair" center, (which hes an idiot for telling me this) and that theyd have to "Diagnose it" - Or, "Look at it all bug eyed and say, HMMM.. a couple times, or Yup..." and tell me I need to replace it. Or what also might suck, is I dropped it a few days ago, from like 2 feet, didn't throw it, slam it, it was just a light drop. So there are a few chips around the edges of the phone, wounder if theyll try to tell me thats why its happening, even though it was doing this 3 days after I bought it. June 5th, so anyways I ended up calling the repair store before truckin over there, and they told me "No, you take it back to where you bought it, You dont want it repaired you want it Exchanged!
Hmmm.... Interesting, I could have sworn I told the other dude that! I know nothing Great Sprint Masta! So anyway they told me theyd have a shipment in tomorrow, and that No, I cannot get on a list nor could they "order" me one. Wounder if theyll be there tomorrow.

Complete BS. I can tell you from experience that the Sprint employees at the stores know pretty much nothing about anything.
Call Sprint's hotline directly and explain your situation. They should be able to order one for you and have it shipped directly to your address. That's how I got my EVO in the first place. When every store was sold out and it was no longer available online, all I had to do was call in and they ordered it and sent it out next day.

Yeah that is certainly a step you can take. If the store is unable to assist thats just more fuel to take with you when you call Sprint and let them know how you were treated in the store. Bet you'll have a new Evo by Friday lol.

I did call the hotline, I dialed *2 and talked to a fella and he told me the same, just take it up to the one that I bought it at and have them exchange it. I guess they play favorites.
Ya, I called em again, they told me all I can do is have them hold one, IF they have any, I think I'm just talkin to the wrong people about this. thanks for the input.
I bought mine from Radio Shack.
Do I need to deal with them to try to exchange mine, or can/should I just take it to a Sprint store directly and see if they will exchange it there?
Also, I've heard/read that HTC has pulled all the EVO's and is "fixing" the assembly line and expects to have "fixed" units available soon.
Assuming this is true (yes, I know), do you think they will replace the "defective" units after the 30 days, based on the 1 yr mfr warranty?
Or do I need to push for a replacement before July 3?
?????
okay heres what im understanding so far, sprint will replace/exchange my evo if it has light leakage or/and glass separation? please correct me if im wrong, so when i go to my local sprint store i wont look like a fool

+1... Im in the same boat.
Sprint online order center told me that for the glass separation n light leaking I should get a replacement from sprint dot com (being the place I got my phone from) n that going to a local repair store would only mean I get a refurbished evo the rep said "if you paid for anew device n its defective you should naturally want a new replacement not a refurbished unit" so I agreed the phone is still out of stock at sprint dot com n as soon as it goes in stock I was told to call them n demand my new replacement. Further more the rep said even if I go past my 30 day limit n the device is still not in stock that I will not pl pay for anything because it was defective to begin with.
I went to a sprint repair center and the guy told me it is a normal thing for the phone to have a light leak and that the glass was normal. He said he has a Evo too and his is doing the same thing. I showed him how my glass is up and does not have an edge like the other side of the phone and he said that the phone is fine... WHAT THE HECK... no it isn't! It has lifted some since I bought it.
All 3 of ours are having the glass problem and mine has a half blown speaker. Sprint said to take it into a corp store so they could put a note on the account, so I did, but sprint.com is still out so I can't replace them.
Another week and a half and I'll be getting close to the 30 day mark. I hope I get some working ones by then!
I know it is not normal for the phone to be glowing in the dark...

Coming from having 2 faulty Heros and having to deal with CS, your best bet is to use *2. Lately Sprint's CS has been amazing after horrible reviews. Let them know your problem and they will take care of it. I have had 2 different options. Either have Sprint overnight me a replacement phone. Or have them note my account and I go to the local Sprint store to have it replaced. Both have worked flawlessly.

Oh good I was worried about this. I am having the light leakage issues and want an exchange, and of course like every other owner I have dropped mine already lol.
Luckily I got mine at a Wal-Mart in the boondocks where they have a full stock still so no inventory issues there haha

Once you go into the store and speak with a manager politely ask him when your 30 day satisfaction guarentee started. Its unfortunate that you have to mention it but I am sure once he see that you are still within your trial that will light some fire under his a$$. Not only will he think he'll lose a new client but a new client that bought an EVO. Should work...
i'm not sure if i want to wait for the software patch for the screen since some people aren't having the issue. It won't fix the screen lifting issue anyway. Mine is very slightly raised at the bottom barely noticable but i'm woried that it will get worse over time.
I also purchased mine at Radio Shack and am wondering if I need to exchange it there or go to a sprint store.
I bought my Atrix Feb 22 the day it came out. 1 month and 2 weeks later I sent a text message, went to check the phone 20 mins later and it was powered off. Never powered on since (tried everything to fix it). Not rooted, 100% stock with few apps, never dropped, huge Otterbox case and screen protector. I bought it from RadioShack, they said I had to talk to AT&T and that they wouldn't give me a new phone cause its after 30 days.
Anyway, AT&T sent me a refurb...or a used phone...or whatever it is. Well it has some defects of its own. I don't want to run around switching them phone after phone until I get one that works correctly. If I complain do you think I will get a new phone? Would I go to RadioShack or AT&T for that? And lastly, does anyone know what kind of phone I received from them, used, repaired, etc?
My refurb phone does this weird thing at startup, like it wants the lights to turn on but they dont. Also the bottom lights come on when they want and the green message light does as well. Otherwise the phone works fine it appears. Only had it for a day.
I went through this with verizon recently. The best you will get is a refurb. It really sucks because you are most likely never going to get a phone that works.
you can try motorola support, they might ask you to send the phone for repairs though.
If you replace the phone 3 times you can choose a new one oev.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
the above post is correct, i did that last year and finally they sent me the better version of the phone i had, and it was new not refurb.
So I need to go through 3 Refurb phones, or 1 New phone and 2 refurb phones?
This is my first refurb after my original new one died. While this phone works, it just doesnt seem to be godly like my original one was. It has restarted a few times, camera app froze, lights at the bottom do what they want, all things my original phone never did.
Sell it on Ebay, get a Nexus S.
Talked to ATT for what seems like the 12th time and they will send me another refurb. I asked the tech how many refurbs do I have to go through before I get a new one and he said he had never herd of anyone getting new phones for their problems. Any comments regarding this?

Thanks for your insight.
Generally, ATT is a pain about giving away new phones. I don't think there is a cut and dry way of getting a new phone, but some people get lucky and others don't. Honestly... most refurbs are alright though. Nothing to get too fussy about unless there is actually something wrong with it. It is agitating though.
Well there is something wrong with this refurb. But if I get another refurb that is defective I honestly should get a new phone. Maybe if it had been a few months I would be ok with a refurb but the phone is a month and a half!
