[Q] reason not to get S4? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so I like hacking my phones, I understand this is a little early to be asking this but are there any reasons why I would not want to get the S4 on Sprint if I want to hack it - like I remember the S3 on Verizon I think was locked and couldnt be hacked at first or if it had a certain type of firmware on it
anyways are there any known reasons why this isnt a good phone for moded roms and the like
I currently have the S1 on Sprint its the Epic with the slide out keyboard so its time for a upgrade, I would like a slide out keyboard but its not needed - I do need or really want the samoled screen mine is so much better than the other ones my friends have now

If it is like the AT&T and Verizon versions it will have a locked bootloader. So if ROMs are very important to you, I would wait until that is unlocked or other workarounds are developed.

I have sprint so I assume thats fine

Should I buy this phone?

Was wondering what's the track record of Samsung getting custom Roms/firmware?
I really like how XDA have developers to do custom ROMS for HTC phones but was wondering does Samsung phones gets same treatment? Or will be looking at far and few in between updates from Samsung itself and won't be able to update to the latest and greatest?
Really want Nexus One but the Galaxy S is sooooooooo much better *sigh*
Can't answer your question on whether the Samsung will get the same amount of Dev time that has been lavished on the HTC phones, but I was in the same situation as yourself - Galaxy S or Nexus One.
I came down on the side of the Galaxy S simply because it's a better phone all round. There's a multi-touch vid on youtube comparing the responsiveness of the screens, and the Galaxy wiped the floor with the Nexus One. I'm hoping that the popularity of this phone will mean that the Devs on here will start giving some time to the Galaxy S.
I must admit I was initially drawn towards the Nexus One because of excellent work that has been done by the likes of Cyanogen et al, but I took the long term view that surely the same must eventually happen with the Galaxy S. *crosses fingers*
For the Galaxy, there is MoDaCo. For the Galaxy Spica, there is Samdroid. Don't know much about the others, but they weren't released here in Europe anyway.
I followed Samdroid a while, thinking about getting a Spica. There are some awesome things going on there - they even tried to modify the touchscreen sensor, because the hardware does support multitouch, but the driver doesn't. AFAIK, they had no success, but still nice try. And they even opened a board for the Galaxy S, maybe Leshak fetches one and works some magic there in the future. If not, I am pretty sure somebody will.
If you want to customize it to run the latest roms, the question is: how "open" is this device?
I know that HTC made the Desire a pain in the butt to unlock/root, and they will improve this with every new phone the make, making them more and more secure and block customized images.
Is Samsung going to follow the same strategy?
I think you're right Magicdroid, the question would be how open this is. But even though the Desire was a pain to root, it HAD been rooted just cos there's lots of developers. When there are lots of developers, you'll get rooted device
I wonder if the Galaxy S will get lots of user base.............I just hope lots and lots of ppl will pick it up and then the chance of longetivity with custom ROMS dramatically increases....
I'm hopoing for good community support as well. I have an AT&T Tilt, and have doen well on the XDA site. I'm spoiled
I am very interested in the Galaxy S, but I"m on At&T, and the AT&T version i keep reading about doesn't have the same specs. So having to wait and see on that.
Also, I see a lot of negative feedback on Samsung support, and based on their previous Android phone (Behold I think it's called) is not getting an upgrade. Lots of complaints about being abandonded by Samsung.
Not sure what I'll do. If At&T doesn't get decent phones soon, I mahy have to look do Verizon.
Sorry...I'm rambling off topic.
The Galaxy S looks like a great piece of hardware.

Hilarious! I just found it and laughed so much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVlsRCMltDg
I was considering to buy a Nexus, but now I changed my mind...someday this mobile will hopefully get root and give enough space for customizations of every kind...just wait and see - it will come in the mid of June to Europe and I'm eager to hold one in my hands
I'm disciplining myself to not get this phone until there's a good team of developers move to it to get customizations going
aaahhh the wait the wait......
and, do you have one jet? the best mod is doctorz rom. it runs very smooth
God damn it. Did you sign up just to necro a thread that's over A YEAR AND A HALF old?

Captivate-> Root if Galaxy S does

I read in another forum that they thought rooting of the AT&T Captivate is unlikely, due to its difference from Galaxy S, and that AT&T would prevent that.
Comments?
unlikely....but until someone versed in the skill of rooting gets his hands on the Captivate, it's all speculation i.e. pointless.
I don't think it will make much difference. Sure, ATT tends to lock their devices down... But, that is normally on a general user basis. Think about the iCrap - they were still able to be jailbroken, etc.
If a method of "Root" is found for any of the Galaxy S devices I would think that same method would work on all of them.
However, this is just my opinion and like the previous post stated - until we get one in hand we can't be 100% sure.
As far as the Captivate being a lot different from the other Galaxy S devices... Samsung is pushing to have a "Galaxy S" device on all carriers and in 110 countries. There will most likely be some small differences among the devices. However, it wouldn't seem likely that they would be different enough that one ROM couldn't be used for several different models. Take a look at what CyanogenMod did with their ROM's - slight differences allow for them to be used on two HTC devices and the Motorola Droid. Most Desire/N1 ROMS are almost interchangeable.
If the Galaxy S is anywhere NEAR as successful as Samsung is hoping there will be a LOT of people wanting root and custom ROMS.
Galaxy S Rooted
www.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s-rooted-it-aint-easy
Galaxy S rooted. Good new for Captivate...Hopefully.
The HTC Aria has already been rooted, too. So I don't expect it would take long for the Captivate. Wonder if the addition of the gyroscope would make things more difficult
Only other thing I'd like to see then after the root is a rom to load that is the original, in case of warranty needs.
I am torn between an AT&T Nexus One and a Captivate.
I want to stay with AT&T because the wife loves her iphone. The Captivate would be much cheaper via an upgrade but I dont think I want it if its not going to be able to be rooted.
I am going to wait a couple of weeks and see how the scene looks before jumping on it the first day its available.

the way I understand it. you create a backup during the rooting process. So you can restore to original.
Thanks

It doesn't have a gyroscope. It has a "six-axis accelerometer" that acts like one. I don't think this is a significant change.

Why are you trading up from N1 to Captivate? N1 is still a really good phone. i hear customization for this phone will take some time before it releases. it took nearly two month to release custom rom for Galaxy S the Euro Version. I think i might wait for the captivate until i there is a good rom to run on.
I also hear that samsung will prevent future updates. in the news froyo will be released but looking at the history of previous android samsung phones, they might not release the update and make customers buy a new equipment.
Also due to some driver encryption, only rom we can customize is the version samsung releases. I hope i am wrong about this cuz i want this phone. but i don't want to buy now and have a outdated phone six month later. Phones like N1 will have new custom rom every time goggle release an update. I also like to get a N1 but ATT version is so expensive.
Ummmm...has anyone forgotten that Samsung has been more cooperative and timely in releasing their kernel and driver source code than most (all?) of their competitors?

I'm not gonna go off of what people have heard or baseless speculation. The N1 is really starting to piss me off with its crappy RF and now that I have my iPhone 4 I'm not liking the N1 too much so I'm hoping this device is going to be much better. I can deal with not having 2.2 right away and I think this phone will sell amazingly well and there will be lots of support official or not so I'm gonna take my chances.
The reason Samsung probably didn't update their previous Android devices is because they were utter crap and anyone buying them should have seen that coming. Why buy a phone that already has last gen hardware and expect to have the latest software?
I personally will be up at the crack of dawn heading to my att store which had a hard time confirming that it was actually going to be released sunday.
I do believe that there will be custom roms available and that for the most part they will be compatible with the various versions of the galaxy S. These samsung phones will probly be the hottest devices on the market for a while and I expect to see a good number of quality devs doing some wonderful things for these phones. Anythings possible with android hell I'm running FROYO on a old tilt

hehe good thing im wfh on sunday am and i live like 2 min away from the ATT COR store...i can drive by and see if there is a line...i think the iP4 is going back...
N1 is not even close to the Galaxy series I have a desire which has 64mb ram than an N1 and it still lags like a mofo. Side by side, desire rather dated seriously.
@ lgkahn Mega-pixels don't mean quality, just take a look at the '8mp' EVO CMOS camera... they're CRAP Any CMOS lens will be crap, hands down. If you want a REAL CCD camera get a real one they're sub $100
If there's a line then you shouldn't have waited. I walked in on Wednesday to a Little Rock store to see one, they offered to sell it to me right then & there but I needed to wait for my wife to make up her mind on what phone she wanted. She verified on Thursday with one of the San Antonio stores that sure, they'd sell it early so on Friday we walked in & walked out with the Captivate, no problem. Asking never hurts.
Samsung Captivate
I have the captivate... I just rooted it however there seems to be no roms out there for it yet... Also I notice that on my wife's Samsung Vibrant using Tmobile when she goes to teh Android market there are certain apps there but when i go to the android market on my captive using at&t i can't find the Mod Install location app or the apps 2 sd ap.... this is strange. anyone have any ideas

I have my phone rooted, nandroided, AT&T bloatware removed, sideloading, and ready for a custom froyo ROM. Not many other phones have advanced this far, this quickly into their life cycle. I bet Captivate will be one of the first to get a Gingerbread ROM, if not from Samsung, then from the community, it certainly meets the hardware requirements. Without a locked down bootloader and an eFuse, Captivate (and all the Galaxy S siblings released thus far) are more hackable than their competition, not less.

any word on bootloaders?

I'm not getting a N3 until it's cracked or they release a Dev edition. I'd love to see a crack though. Now that it is out, I'm hoping a crack was developed and just kept under wraps
Seriously, any buy if you can't mod?
Out of curiosity, what part of the locked bootloader is causing you to make that decision?
customization
I had a locked device. No custom roms no custom kernels. OC, UC undervolting etc.
I prefer to try different roms and have the experience I want not what VZW thinks I need.
From them I only need a sim they get a monthly fee for that. The device is mine. fully paid period.
If developer edition gets released only few people will get that, so the support for the device will be minimal if the mainstream device remains locked.
I hope that verizon goes VOLTE and then Goog will have lte support for them the way they are doing with Nexus 7.
N3 looks dimmer and dimmer.

Was said device a motorola device? Motorola is notorious for not releasing Kernel source code for their locked devices. Samsung, however, has already released the verizon galaxy note 3 kernel source code. Given someone creates a good bootstrap recovery that supports kexec, custom roms with custom kernels will be completely doable even with a locked bootloader. Furthermore, with the hardware in the phone and the availability of customization apps on the store, even on a stock ROM with just root, you can freeze the bloat and customize it almost as much as you can with a custom ROM. If you're seriously thinking you'll "Need" to overclock a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor for anything beyond epeen benchmarks, then I'll giggle a little bit.

The T-Mobile version came with unlocked bootloader. Don't know why Verizon & AT&T want so much control over our expensive toys.

Motorola indeed. No more moto for me..
need. not per se.
On my N2 saber kernel, with some tweaking ( slight voltage changes and some governor touches and yes oc at 2GHz ), gives me the best performance( subjective definition, but good battery life and no lag).
Droidstyle said it best If beans106 gets us a custom rom for N3 I am in. Some nice kernels would be good too. saber, devil etc
I would love to be in last years boat when adam unlocked it(N2) in 4 days and had casual up and running . Adam said no more sammy... sad

This is my question. I would use an upgrade to buy a phone and sell it, then use that to get a developer phone. But after I got it, will there be anything I can do with it? Seems like the developer phones only get development if the main phone is unlocked, which then negates the need for a developer phone. Maybe we need a forum devoted solely to Verizon Developer phones from now on.

Hadn't thought of that. I guess the S4 gets some Dev love because some folks were able to unlock it early on. If the N3 is never cracked, devs may well just pass this thing up.
Why do I want an unlocked bootloader? Recovery and backups. I want to mod and flash until my eyes bleed. I love seeing my device running a new ROM, even if I hate the way the ROM looks - it's new and different. I get bored with a device that just is. I demand change. If I must be stuck with a device's frame for a few months (that's about as long as I can hold onto one before wanting to change it) then I want new software - daily! I guess this is the definition of a crack flasher. Damn it feels good to be one though.
Can't wait to see who will be the first to post in the Dev section. How many hours will the phone be out when the first post is made? My money is on 96 hours
So jealous of looking at T-Mobiles and Sprints Android Development sections... SO JEALOUSSSSSSSS :silly:
I would just like to know what the interest level is for our wonderful devs out there.
Are there some die hards working day and night to crack this thing? Or is it a collective "meh" thanks to VzW locking us down.

It seems clear to me that Verizon phones aren't going to be cracked anymore, but they offer a developer phone for just about every model now. I'm honestly kinda shocked we all haven't just migrated to them, instead of even discussing cracking the standard phones. They give us exactly what we want: fully unlocked Verizon phones. If our whole Verizon section of the community would just accept that developer phones are the best option, it would greatly help us Verizon folks.

Everyone can get a subsidized phone and just sell it for full price, then get the dev phone, can't they? That's what I'll do. Just an extra step. And the phone is covered by the same 1 yr warranty from Samsung that a phone from Verizon is. Just a standard one-year manufacturer's warranty, like just about every piece of electronics that exists has. Difference is Verizon would deal with Samsung if the phone were subsidized, you deal directly with Samsung for the dev phone.

No verizon warranty is a bit different. they will send you a refurbished no questions asked. and they can send you virtually unlimited ones the first year ( i replaced my rezound 5 times and my s3 three times all within one year because it was all under the rezounds one year warranty ) The manufacturer warranty has to investigate the device and until they fix it , you are on your own . and then they may send you a refurbished.
And the whole thing with selling the phone , it might be ok to you , but the hoops scare ppl .
If Verizon is doing this to run me off, it's working. Spring sucks but t-mo shows some promise. Now I just have to talk the wife into letting me.

Verizon Note 3

Is there anything in the near future coming as far as roms,tweaks..anything for the Verizon note 3 or being that the boatloader is locked developers have lost interest...pretty bummed out...unfortunately I don't have the brain capacity to become a developer...you guys make it easy for us noobs to customize our phone...so we are pretty much a captive audience...waiting for something new...
Thanks guys...
I'm pretty sure we'll get some custom roms with the new 5.0 base whenever we actually get it. Likely just the current ones will be updated, though, and all will still have to be TouchWiz based as well. Developers get frustrated with Verizon and kinda lose interest, and I can't say I blame them. If you're really into customization, you will have way more luck with unlocked phones activated on ATT or T-Mobile right now.
ATT and T-Mobile service in my area is no where near verizon...so I guess I'm screwed...i am actually thinking of converting to ios...I loved my note 2 when I unlocked and started roming and installing CM..in was great....but know I'm on4.4.4 there isn't even root for it...Fustrated!!

Debating the S7, coming from S8 and S5.

Well I figured it was time to upgrade finally from my S5. Got the new S8.... and now my hand/thumb has to do yoga each time I want to pull the notifications bar down.... and I'm unsuccessful the majority of the time. The S8 is really just TOO tall and narrow.... The other issue I had with the S8 was the aspect ratio, wtf is up with 18.5 by 9 aspect ratio? All my videos and apps have black bars now!
These 2 issues, (phone too tall/narrow & aspect ratio) are why I'm debating going with the S7. I just got some hands on with it in the store and it feels a lot easier to get to that notification panel since the screen doesn't go all the way to the top. It's also a tad bit wider making it feel more sturdier. I have to say, I do not like the direction phones are going if they are going to be this tall and narrow to where you need TWO hands.
Anyway, coming to this forum I'm very glad to see the S7 community is thriving and root access appears to be very easy and there are a lot of dev support, including my favorite S5 rom, Stranglite. WOOOHOOO.
Does anyone know if there is suppose to be a new LG, Moto, or HTC around the corner I should wait for instead of going with the S7? I'm going to give the S8 a week to try, before turning it in for my S5 or the S7, so we'll see.
Considering I have know idea of any new flagship phones coming out I would go with the s7. It is a solid phone with no real drawbacks except the locked bootloader. That's why I recommend that you go with the G930F since I see that the bootloader will be unlocked anytime soon on the Us models.

As long as it can be rooted and I can flash roms, I'm okay with it. Thought the bootloaded needed to be unlocked for that to happen, guess not. I see a bunch of roms and root guides for the S7 in the dev forums below.

You couldn't pay me enough to get the S8 for the reasons you quoted.
That being said...
There isn't a lot of custom ROM development for the S7 but don't let the fact that the ROMs available aren't full blown ROMs hold you back.
Stang5litre's ROM is highly customizable and has a ton of options. That and using FlashFire there isn't much you can't do with it. Granted, an unlocked bootloader would be great but it hasn't happened yet and it doesn't look good.
Another alternative for your S8, if you use Nova Launcher you can set a gesture (swipe down) to bring your notifications down but it will only work from the main screens of the phone.

My opinion probably isn't popular. If it were me, I would still get the s7 but I would not root it. I think the way the phone behaves with the fixes etc rooted make the device worse than stock. I've had this phone for coming up on a year and a half and second to my Sony z3v this is one of the best smoothest and fastest experiences I have had on a stock device. Just get the cheapest sim unlocked one you can get and flash the 930U firmware, and it can be used on every US carrier.

My only downside to rooting is not being able to use android pay. The free apps, game trainers, and wifi teether make rooting worth it for me.
I'm not worried about unlocked carrier phones, Verizon had the best coverage here in the US. Now if the unlocked works overseas I'd be game, but aren't these phones all global anyway?

I haven't rooted either. It just doesn't get anything extra for me, but I do miss using TiBu though. But, with most phones these days, they come with excellent backup software that backs up the data/settings of the apps so I can easily restore if I have to wipe the phone for any reason.
Went with S7 flat. So much happier with its design and form factor. I can use one hand to for everything again.
The S8 infinity screen is a waste, especially since 99% of people use cases that negate the infinity look/feature .

SM-G930 series vs. S8

As long as it can be rooted and I can flash roms, I'm okay with it. Thought the bootloaded needed to be unlocked for that to happen, guess not. I see a bunch of roms and root guides for the S7 in the dev forums below.

Unlocking the S7 series does not require root (this is especially true of the NA Snapdragon models) as there is actually a firmware switch right in the phone for this (OEM Unlock); once I unlocked via this switch, I started using U firmware (my particular phone is the unique-to-VZW gold SM-G930V model; however, it is running the May 17 SM-G930U firmware for the Tracfone S7; I switched to this firmware because I'm considering taking this S7 to Tracfone to replace my GNex which is there now). Rooting the phone is a separate process from unlocking it. The fact that the two ARE separate is what has driven folks buggy - we got used to having to do them at the same time. While you must have an unlocked phone to root it, you can unlock an S7 a lot easier than rooting it.
