Debating the S7, coming from S8 and S5. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Well I figured it was time to upgrade finally from my S5. Got the new S8.... and now my hand/thumb has to do yoga each time I want to pull the notifications bar down.... and I'm unsuccessful the majority of the time. The S8 is really just TOO tall and narrow.... The other issue I had with the S8 was the aspect ratio, wtf is up with 18.5 by 9 aspect ratio? All my videos and apps have black bars now!
These 2 issues, (phone too tall/narrow & aspect ratio) are why I'm debating going with the S7. I just got some hands on with it in the store and it feels a lot easier to get to that notification panel since the screen doesn't go all the way to the top. It's also a tad bit wider making it feel more sturdier. I have to say, I do not like the direction phones are going if they are going to be this tall and narrow to where you need TWO hands.
Anyway, coming to this forum I'm very glad to see the S7 community is thriving and root access appears to be very easy and there are a lot of dev support, including my favorite S5 rom, Stranglite. WOOOHOOO.
Does anyone know if there is suppose to be a new LG, Moto, or HTC around the corner I should wait for instead of going with the S7? I'm going to give the S8 a week to try, before turning it in for my S5 or the S7, so we'll see.

Considering I have know idea of any new flagship phones coming out I would go with the s7. It is a solid phone with no real drawbacks except the locked bootloader. That's why I recommend that you go with the G930F since I see that the bootloader will be unlocked anytime soon on the Us models.

As long as it can be rooted and I can flash roms, I'm okay with it. Thought the bootloaded needed to be unlocked for that to happen, guess not. I see a bunch of roms and root guides for the S7 in the dev forums below.

Well I wouldn't call them full fledged ROMs considering they are just slightly modified stock firmware with some minor tweaks, but nothing compared to an actual custom Rom. There is also no custom recovery

Trust me get the international version. I regret my decision of getting the Verizon model on launch. It's been over a year and still no unlocked bootloader. Words can not explain my frustration.

You couldn't pay me enough to get the S8 for the reasons you quoted.
That being said...
There isn't a lot of custom ROM development for the S7 but don't let the fact that the ROMs available aren't full blown ROMs hold you back.
Stang5litre's ROM is highly customizable and has a ton of options. That and using FlashFire there isn't much you can't do with it. Granted, an unlocked bootloader would be great but it hasn't happened yet and it doesn't look good.
Another alternative for your S8, if you use Nova Launcher you can set a gesture (swipe down) to bring your notifications down but it will only work from the main screens of the phone.

Hey now! That might work. I've purchased Nova a while ago, just hadn't used it in a long time. Still would have an issue with reaching the buttons once the notification bar is pulled down.
I am scared all future phones are going this tall/narrow way

My opinion probably isn't popular. If it were me, I would still get the s7 but I would not root it. I think the way the phone behaves with the fixes etc rooted make the device worse than stock. I've had this phone for coming up on a year and a half and second to my Sony z3v this is one of the best smoothest and fastest experiences I have had on a stock device. Just get the cheapest sim unlocked one you can get and flash the 930U firmware, and it can be used on every US carrier.

My only downside to rooting is not being able to use android pay. The free apps, game trainers, and wifi teether make rooting worth it for me.
I'm not worried about unlocked carrier phones, Verizon had the best coverage here in the US. Now if the unlocked works overseas I'd be game, but aren't these phones all global anyway?

I haven't rooted either. It just doesn't get anything extra for me, but I do miss using TiBu though. But, with most phones these days, they come with excellent backup software that backs up the data/settings of the apps so I can easily restore if I have to wipe the phone for any reason.

Went with S7 flat. So much happier with its design and form factor. I can use one hand to for everything again.
The S8 infinity screen is a waste, especially since 99% of people use cases that negate the infinity look/feature .

SM-G930 series vs. S8

Unlocking the S7 series does not require root (this is especially true of the NA Snapdragon models) as there is actually a firmware switch right in the phone for this (OEM Unlock); once I unlocked via this switch, I started using U firmware (my particular phone is the unique-to-VZW gold SM-G930V model; however, it is running the May 17 SM-G930U firmware for the Tracfone S7; I switched to this firmware because I'm considering taking this S7 to Tracfone to replace my GNex which is there now). Rooting the phone is a separate process from unlocking it. The fact that the two ARE separate is what has driven folks buggy - we got used to having to do them at the same time. While you must have an unlocked phone to root it, you can unlock an S7 a lot easier than rooting it.

What are the chances of root and bootloader-unlock for S7 / S7 Edge on Verizon?

I'm guessing the chances of bootloader unlock are pretty slim. Chances for root maybe decent, but hard to say at this point in time.
The Verizon S6 was a little bit sad with the locked bootloader, but at least PingPong gave us root. Does anyone here know about PingPong and whether or not the creators of it will attempt to address root on the S7?
Maybe all the S5 owners that held out when the S6 released will have interest in the S7 and maybe we could get a bounty started for bootloader unlock. Or is the security so sound that it's not worth the effort because it's too hard to crack?
I already ordered the Verizon S7 Edge anyway, so I guess my fate is sealed.
Don't even count on it. If you're thinking about getting a Verizon model just assume it's locked for life.
If you care about rooting and unlocked bootloaders over hardware get a Nexus 6P. Consider ourselves lucky that the last few Nexus phones work on Verizon. If only Samsung had the balls to sale one universal unit running stock Android and unlocked bootloaders. I would kill for that phone.
It seems like it gets worse with each device Samsung releases. I do care about root, and custom roms are nice, but I like the Samsung hardware a lot, so I'm torn. If I had extra money, I'd get a Nexus 6P, but as it is, I got an S7 Edge for $192 spread out over 2 years if I so choose. That sexy hardware combined with a free $300 smart watch (Gear S2) for $8/mo versus Nexus 6P that I'd have to buy outright = tough choice, so I went with Samsung and am hoping it gets rooted. Until it gets root, I won't be able to use Tasker which affects my daily life, so I need to figure out an alternative to Tasker for what I'm using it for now. On the other hand, at least Samsung Pay will still work...quite a small and meaningless consolation.
The fact is, S6 got root which gives me hope that the S7 will, but I am okay without it....I guess. Man, I despise Samsung and Apple for this crap, but their hardware is so nice.
It's really not Samsung's fault, Verizon asked them too. It's usually not like that on T-mobile

This. If it weren't for Samsung pay, I would consider other phones. Samsung pay is seriously the killer feature in the US though.
Lets hope for the best, but I am guessing root only.
I can almost guarantee you that the S7 and Edge won't get even root. Many people don't care anymore as much as they used to because phones these days don't require root as much as they did before.
Honestly the only reason I would need it is to force uninstall all of the bloat, but we have Package Disabler for that which does almost the same thing except it doesn't free up the storage space.
Less than zero.
There will probably always be a root, just takes time and man power to do it.
Just like how Apple always tries to make their phone invulnerable to jailbreaking, but yet people always find a way.
True.. if there's enough intresting and a bounty I bet it could happen. Nothing is bullet proof. ...

Sorry to burst your bubble but the past 2 generations of Verizon Samsung phones have yet to receive root. It is not going to happen with the implementations put in by Google to verify the system upon booting. The note 5 never saw root, the s6 only shortly saw root on early shipping firmware, and the Note 4 never saw root after KitKat. Just letting you know so that you don't get your hopes up.
You will have to have an unlocked bootloader from here on out unless something huge happens.

Past 2? I am sorry but my Galaxy S6 Edge has root..
I've rooted every phone I had until the DT2 and now my s7e. since I can now disable bloat and it not show up any longer I don't really miss root. And with the SD card storage isn't a problem.

Sorry, forgot to mention that one when I mentioned the S6. They both got root on the shipped firmware, but after it was patched no phone after that has gotten root. The note 5, or the edge plus. I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just really upset about the situation of the root possibilities of all the new locked down phones. I really wanted a Note 5 but it was also said to be basically impossible by the community so it saved me time and money. I was just trying to do the same for others.

It is not impossible, just many people don't want to spend the time to root the Verizon or AT&T, why would they if they can easily root and mod the ones with unlocked bootloaders.
Look at Apple, for example, they try really hard to make their phones hard to jailbreak, but yet people find ways to do it.

Ya there doesn't seem to be much effort put into Samsung + Verizon devices anymore. I can see why, like you mentioned about locked bootloaders, but there are large swaths of users in the US that really don't have the option to get unlocked Samsungs. Like in my entire state, we have to get Verizon unless we want sub-par coverage, and then it's AT&T with locked bootloader, too.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed but am doing okay without root so far (about 14 hours in with my S7Edge).
If you're a betting man these are the odds I'll give you:
Root 1:10
Update to N before S8 release 1:500
Unlocked bootloader 1:9999999999
Any development 1:99999999999
If we do get root there will also likely be a patch issued to remove the exploit.
Get used 6.0.1 and bloatware.
Speaking of bloatware did you notice the two square inches in the notification shade dedicated to quick connect? It's unremoveable.
We should put up a bounty, I'd definitely be willing to donate!

The quick connect is removable from the notifcations, you just have to press the arrow and then edit to turn it off.

Two ways to remove it, dropdown your notifications and edit the quick toggles. The option to turn off is at the bottom.
You can also disable the quickconnect app as well.

Bounty?

So are we to this point yet? With this locked Bootloader we are getting nowhere. I know before they had safestrap to get around the bootloader and flash roms on att devices. Now I'm in for whatever but thought it was worth the discussion. And no I do not know how someone gets paid or whatever or keeps track of funds. I just starting the convo on it.
I support this, as well. I made an uncharacteristically ignorant upgrade from an S5 to the S7 Edge (Sprint - Qualcomm) and hit a roadblock with rooting.
I signed the petition almost the day it was posted. But still no love. Its sad, knowing the one thing holding this device back from reaching its true potential is the stubborn nature of the manufacturer.
Facts & Rant: the biggest complaint about Apple is their communistic business practices. So why would Samsung start emulating Apple? First they stripped the S6 of the two flagship features that set their phones apart from Apple devices (thankfully they brought back the removable storage with the S7), and now the locked bootloader...? This is one reason I've never considered myself a fanboy of any one manufacturer...
Not sure if this thread will become the official bounty thread, but either way: $10 from me to the one whom succeeds.
Does XDA have a crowdfunding module?

So is there an official bounty for the Spring S7 Edge to get a solid root going (the one and only "solution" seems iffy).
I'm more than happy to contribute.
I've had my damn S7 edge sitting in the box since November and keep using my Note 4 (while my g.f. uses her S7 edge).

I'm rooted on APL2, on the sprint G930U firmware. It works perfectly aside from no MMS.
For starters I want to backup/restore my data from my Galaxy Note 4. There are many apps that don't save to the cloud still, and also many that don't use the built in MM "backup" that Google provided developers. TitaniumBackup is THE app to use here to ensure true backups. Binary "nandroid" type backups are another feature I'd love to retain I tried Helium but it seems a bit wonky and seems to not backup all my apps. The asinine "Smart Sync" that Samsung provides also does NOT backup the actual data -- only SMS, call logs, pictures and other generic things. Removing any garbage apps is another reason I'd like root. And lastly, I would want to NOT trip Knox so that I can use Fingerprint with PayPal, AndroidPay, SamsungPay and other apps that check that bull**** tripwire.
But honestly, backup of data is the main reason.
The methods I've been reading seem convoluted and nowhere near as easy as Note 4 was to root. I figure if I can throw in $50 or $100 to help the cause, I'm all in...
i am for this. on a side note, i have been using my S7 unrooted since october and i must say im pretty suprised that i haven't missed root all that much.

Should I buy the Nexus 6p?

Hi everyone, I own a Nexus 5 and, while I like it a lot, I think it's time to get a new phone. I was going to buy the Nexus 5X but the recent bootloop problem with Android 7 made me change my mind and now I'm considering getting either the Nexus 6p or the Galaxy S6. I would prefer the 6p due to stock Android and timely updates but after checking the forums here I noticed a lot of cases of bootloops and bricked devices.
I can get the Nexus 6p for $350 and the Galaxy S6 for $300.
So, what do you think? Should I buy the 6p or get the GS6? Thanks in advance.
PS: Please don't recommend newer devices. They're very expensive where I live.
Definitely the 6p over the GS6...I got the device about a month ago. I unlocked the bootloader, rooted and now I'm on WETA 8.4 Nougat. I spent a lot of time on Resurrection and AICP (MM)...I haven't had any issues with a bricked device or bootloops. There is an issue with the latest recovery though. I'm not sure if it has been fixed. It had something to do with EFS backup/restore and I believe it affected TWRP 3.0.2-2 and 3.0.2-3. I was using -0 for a while til I upgraded to using Nougat ROMs. I haven't had a single issue...I'm also not dumb enough to try something if I don't fully understand the risks. V4A has a new look, Resurrection (MM) includes a new CMTE version I wasnt familiar with coming from a HTC M8...The dev community here is helpful. A lot of the devs are moving on to Nougat, so development is somewhat stalled. It will pop back up hot in a few weeks once Nougat gains more traction. I can't speak for the GS6 community because i don't own a GS6. I'm not even sure if Nougat is available to the GS6. I'd imagine it is though...You know the Nexus Marlin is coming out though? I won't be getting the Marlin anytime soon. I am more than happy enough with the 6P
Edit: you probably popped into the general and troubleshooting threads and saw a bunch of those, "help my device is in bootloop, etc". I'm not sure what their problems are, but i haven't had a single issue when updating to Nougat. I fastboot flashed the factory images to Nougat from MM. If you have problems using ADB check out Squabbi's thread. He made a program that will flash the OTAs, unlock your bootloader, and root your device. You literally have to run the program and let it do it's job. I can try to help as much as I can, but I'm having to catch up myself, so I'm limited. When I made the move from the M8 to the Nexus. There were a lot of changes, so it seemed all new to me. I still don't know a lot about PHH or Magisk v6. It seems to me like a number of people are going to a systemless root approach. It doesn't matter to me regardless, but I do not know the benefits of having systemless root either. Xposed hasn't been updated to Nougat and I have no idea if rovo89 will be doing that or not.

I would love to get the Marlin or Sailfish but as I said, new phones are very expensive where I live. I can get the Nexus 6P for $350 and the GS6 for $300.
I had to include more in that first comment. Ultimately it is your decision. Both phones are great...I'd even recommend the One Plus Three. It has a snapdragon 820 instead of the 810 the 6p has. I do not know which is better though. It's also slightly cheaper too.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I'll probably wait for more replies before I decide. I also need to check a Nexus 6p IRL to see if it fits comfortably in my hand, if not I'll probably get the Galaxy S6.
So I had the same dilemma a month ago (and I'm glad it's past now lol). Same two devices (was also looking at 5X) and around the same prices.
GS6 more powerful and cheaper.
N6P: stock, timely updated and easily to modify.
I chose the N6P for these reasons, as I'm also not a heavy-games player.
Regarding the screen I was also a bit shocked at the start but wow what a nice wide screen. While I still have to sometimes hold it with 2 hands for a few tasks, I am not regretting the wide screen.
Last rom I have tried is weta, everything works but considering moving back to stock/rooted because stock is really of good quality/battery wise.

I'm buying an 6p and giving my s6 to my dad. I hate the s6. It's so hard to hold it and it has so much bloat ware. Also the phone got slower after using it for 2 months.
I have bought 6p two days ago after LG G4.

So I'll stay with 6P till the end of my day!
Anyway.. Love my new Nexus!
I ended up buying the 6P, it's an amazing phone. It is a little big but I have managed to use it without any problem. One last question, I'm not considering rooting it or flashing a custom ROM, if I check the "OEM unlock" option in "Developer settings" will I be able to unlock the bootloader later in case it gets soft bricked or should I unlock the bootloader now?

I tend to unlock the bootloader as soon as I get a phone, just because it wipes the phone and it's always a pain to them get all your stuff back! It's really simple to unlock, so if you haven't got much on your phone still, I'd recommend doing it sooner rather than later

THIS. This a thousand times. Coming from a Note 3 which I didn't unlock (settled for root and Xposed and that was it), I didn't know about the wipe after unlock. I ended up wasting a full day of customization once I discovered that I needed to unlock it.
Got mine three weeks ago. Loving it.
So far all I have is an excellent impression from my device.

Upgrade to the S7 or not...

So I currently have a Galaxy S5 and have had it for just over 2 years now and while it still works great, I am thinking of upgrading and the S7 seems to be the ticket, except for the whole locked bootloader thing. It has been the main thing that has kept me from getting this phone. I know it has been rooted but I was wondering, would some of you still get the S7 even with the whole locked bootloader issue so long as you could root it?
Just having a hard time deciding if I should upgrade or not.
Thanks for any info, advice, input.

I have had the S7 since launch, had an LG G3 for about a year and a Note II for 2 years prior. Note II was great for rooting and trying ROMs, G3 was ok too. I was a flash a flashaholic till I got this phone. The root process doesn't seem super stable but I haven't really looked at it in awhile and I am at a point where I just need the phone to work well and it does. The camera is phenomenal, I can block ads on the Samsung browser, and I can disable 90% of the bloat I don't want and this thing is a beast. The battery life is decent but that all depends on usage and I'm a heavy user. I don't think you can go wrong with an S7 if you just want to use it.
If you absolutely have to be able to root and unlock the bootloader to get performance and do things like run xposed, I think there are better choices. I do believe the HTC 10 has really good developer support and is unlockable with similar specs. Personally that would probably be my choice right now and I'm sure the price is going to come down.
Hope that helps.
Thank you. Yes, I have been looking at the HTC also and having been a fan in the past I was leaning towards it but I also love my S5 and my mom has an S7 and I really like it and I love the wireless charging. Yes, I do run xposed so that would be a must for me. Decisions... lol

Did you come to S7 from Iphone 7? What are the pros and cons?

I'm thinking of switching up. I'm not too hip on IOS yet, but maybe because i'm not at all familiar with it. The Iphone seems very smooth. I dont think Verizon can change up the Iphone system the way they change Samsung to their liking. Much better update system for Apple. (they actually get them) for years. Just trying to get some thoughts. Iphone does without a doubt blow away Samsung in any speed test as does a bunch of lower price phones these days. I think Samsung has been overrated as a powerhouse phone. Dont get me wrong, i've had every Note from Note 2 to Note 7. I've just never had an Apple product and may be ready for a switch to a truly faster phone.
I switched from an iPhone 6 to the S7 Edge (due to the Note 7 being recalled around 2 hours before I sold my Iphone, without my knowledge), and while I do like some things about it, I really miss the apple ecosystem. The update thing is a big plus for iOS, and I didn't research enough before buying the phone to realize the Samsung locks it down so much. My last android phone (Droid DNA) had it's bootloader unlocked before I bought it, so I could flash all kinds of different roms whenever I got bored and it just had the openess that I expected from Android. I bought the S7Edge on the assumption that it would be the same, but unfortunately that's not the case.
Don't get me wrong, I like the phone, but not near as much as my old Iphone, partly due to the software, and partly due to the overwhelming amount of accessories available for Iphones compared to the S7, especially the edge version. The S7E has a beautiful screen, is smaller than my Iphone 6 was (with the same screen size), but I find the edge screen so annoying that I turned it off. It's also annoying that part of the time if I'm using one thumb to reach across the screen to the other side I accidentally brush part of my hand against the edge and open an app that I didn't want to open.
I want to love it, but I like to root my android phones and having to use the engineer kernel to accomplish it has slowed my phone down and lowered the battery life. That's a trade off I accepted though, due to the limitations of the current original development, i.e. very few roms, still locked bootloader, etc... I love the stuff that everyone has done for the phone, especially given it's limitations, so I hope nobody thinks I'm blaming the developers for lack of development, because I sure as hell wouldn't know what to do with it.

I definitely love the phone too, but I will be switching to the iPhone 7 Plus shortly. This is mostly due to every reason you mentioned plus the fact that I have not really owned an Android phone that has not slowed down significantly over time (except for the LG G5, but it had many other problems).
iPhone is great. I've had several but this phone is so much fun. The only gripe I really have with this phone is battery drain but then again, fast wireless charging completely makes up for it.

My wife has always owned iPhones and I just bought her the 7 Plus for Christmas. But I do not like ios at all. Also the screen is the same size as my S7 Edge but it has a much larger footprint. One guy replied that Samsung locks down their phones. No one locks down their devices more than Apple. Most of the Android restrictions are from the carriers. I have not noticed a slow down of my phone as another reply suggested. Sometimes you have to clear the cache if things seem to be sluggish. Speed test don't mean a thing when it comes to real world use. I always play around with my wife's iPhones to see how well they run and to me I don't see a significant advantage compared to my Android flagships. My only issue, like someone else mentioned is the overly sensitive edge. That's a common issue with the S7 Edge but not everyone has it. Others have the opposite issue of screen being slow to respond. If not for the screen issue I would keep my Edge for at least 2 years because I like everything else about it. I plan to get the S8 when it is released. But I'll never buy a iPhone for myself.

Thanks to everyone that replied so far. The feedback is good info. I'm going to keep comparing and patiently wait for Note 8 and new iPhones to come out. A switch to IOS is scary, and the size of the Iphone plus is absurd. That thing is huge!
Honestly I have both and currently hate my iPhone. The loopholes in order to just get a custom icon set is enough for me to miss Android lol

IPhone does win in getting OS updates. For Android it's the pixel/nexus devices. The s7 edge maybe behind in getting the updates but Samsung is innovative with what they put in TouchWiz/grace ui. IPhone is locked down and you can't customize it at all. It comes down to personal preference.
Example: Pixel got multi window with 7.0 but yet Galaxy devices have had that feature for years. Galaxy devices have and support themes. Samsung pay is better than Android pay. Point is that Samsung devices already have some features of Android 7.0
Also if you buy a s7/s7 edge and hate all the bloatware then just flash g935u firmware on it which gets the updates straight from Samsung and not the carrier.
The only negative thing I'll say after having the s7 edge since launch and coming from a nexus 5 is not being able to unlock the bootloader. I wish I could unlock the bootloader and flash an AOSP rom on my S7 Edge. But I'm gonna stick with this phone for like 2 years (or the Note 8 and get it black Friday 2017) and my next phone will be another Samsung device. I'll make sure my next it has an unlock bootloader so I may have to import the European version if Samsung keeps locking down the US phones. Only the s7 edge g935f European version can unlock the bootloader and run custom roms.
But I've been fine with no root. You can root the US version but the kernel is horrible. Your phone will overheat, lag, and have battery drain issues. So I flashed my S7 Edge to stock non-root g935u firmware a long time ago with the Verizon modem/radio. Plus to use Samsung pay, chase and other apps, you can't have root which I've been using so I'm loving since the first day I got it.
You mention speed test and I can tell you my phone is lag free and runs great including multi tasking in real world. My wife has an iPhone 6s plus and both of our phones run great.
IPhone, galaxy, pixel/nexus: all these phones have their pros and cons and it all comes down to personal preference.
