Hey I'm kind of noob at this but like does anyone know what the best ROM and Kernel when installed on the same nexus 4 lets me undervolt and gives me the best battery life?
Thanks
Hello Noob,
First off I would like to say you can't ask that question around here. It's just not allowed.
You need to find out what's best for you. Try all the kernels and roms and experiment with it. That's is part of the process of being here on XDA forums. I'm positively sure all or if not most of the kernels here has the ability to undervolt. To curb the misconception, i just want to say that undervolting does little to no power saving at all.

I am looking for a good combination of Rom and Kernel for maximum Gaming experience. Currently, im using Jr11 and motley kernel, and considering going back to Glazed rom which is imho the best rom for gaming. What do you guys think? Please give me advices. TIA
Before you get flamed by others for having clearly not read the forum rules, I'll say now that the only way to know is by testing them out for yourself.
Afterall, what works great for someone else could work terrible for you.

this is the only correct answer. try them all out, find what your device reacts to best and what fills your needs the best.
that said, my device likes trinity kernel with the rasbean jelly rom.
I use ParanoidAndroid 2.99 Beta6 with Franco kernel r30. I undervolted it too at [email protected] 1,3ghz down to [email protected] 100mhz and i can run the [email protected] 550mhz without problems. I haven't done extensive tests but i think that overclocking the gpu would give the highest gains in terms of gaming performance, but i don't exclude obtaining a little extra performance or more stable fps with some roms.
As the guys above said, it's a matter of taste, not every rom works for everybody.
Im getting nexus 7 in few days and here are my questions:
1. Which kernel you would recommend?I want best performance to be able play games like modern combat 4,nova 3 @ +30-40fps
2. Should i stay with stock ROM or not?If not what you 'd recommend?
3. Do i must have credit card to get 25$ present from google to buy apps in playstore?Does paypal fits?
4. Can i break my device by installing ,using kernels, roms with high voltages?
Thanks.
P.S. I would like to get over 7000 at quadrant benchmark.

1. Franco Kernel is rock solid and has a good balance of performance/battery life.
2. Up to you, but if you like being able to change things, I'd recommend PARANOIDANDROID. You can change between phablet/tablet UI at will. More customizations are coming as well!
3. Not sure, sorry.
4. This device is almost unbrickable -- just read the instructions of the OP for each thing you do and be very methodical and you should be fine. Remember to READ READ READ!
And read!
Enjoy XDA
I recommend you spend the first 30 days on the stock rom.
Just unlock the boot loader (wipes memory) before anything else, and root it if you like.
If you don't know what stock is like, you won't be able to appreciate any differences in custom roms.
As far as I know, the $25 bonus early adapter program ended back in September roughly.
Thanks for the answers.I think that i will stay with stock ROM.But does Paranoid ROM improves overall performance?Waiting more offers for kernels .

Ehh it's more for customization. SmoothROM has great performance though.
Forgot to mention that i will have Nexus 7 32gb 3G version.Does it matters for ROMs and kernels?

What if i won't use 3G function does that still matter? And what will happen if i will try install ROM or kernel which doesn't support 3g?
3G is important with ROMs only or with kernels too?

The structure is a bit different on tilapia (3G N7) than grouper (WiFi N7). So yes, you should only install ROMs from the 3G forum.

How about kernels?I must install kernels only from 3G forum? And N7 3G is more powerful then simple N7?

About the same power, just a bit different internals due to the cellular antenna. I know some Kernels are for both 3G and WiFi -- they'll be labeled.

Thanks for help. How about elite kernel is it safe to run @ 1.8ghz 650gma for daily use?And will it work for 3G?
Waiting for more kernels suggestions.
P.S. Clicked thanks button for everyone who repplied and tried to help.
Before flashing an overclock kernel try your games with stock, you might find oc is unnecessary. I have yet to find a game that lags and I'm complete stock. In my personal experience across a multitude of android devices custom ROMs don't provide any performance gains over stock, simply added features (most perceived performance gain is pure placebo), though there are some ROMs that decrease performance.
As for kernels, the only area I've ever seen a truly noticeable increase is in benchmarks, games play the same and overall fluidity feels the same.
But if you want rock solid performance with minor added features and big bench scores I'd recommend a combination of rasbean ROM and trinity kernel. That and stock are all I'll run on my g'nex while keeping the 7 stock for now.
Edit: Rasbean doesn't indicate support for 3g version.

Be careful playing with overclocking... That and high voltages can definitely mess up a device.

One of the major things that can kill hardware....heat.
Over clocking and over voltage both make the device run hotter.
Too much heat destroys the chips.
Try water cooling...

So what kernel should i use and @ what cpu frequency and @ what gpu frequency to run games as nova 3 ,modern combat 4,asphalt 7 @ +40fps and be safe for hardware?
Hey everyone, I have been on the hunt for the last few days for the best Kernel for my N7, in regards to performance. Earlier today someone turned me onto M-Kernel. I must say, it is very impressive. It has a built in 1.9 GHz overclock, that I was able to set via no-frills. I am running Clean ROM.
This is a multi-purpose post. First off, I wanted to let everyone know about my experience because I had a little trouble figuring out the best combo. The second reason is I would like to know if anyone knows of any other ROM/Kernel combos to get the highest quadrant score possible.
I have a co-worker who has a Galaxy SIII, and we have a friendly rivalry. I would really like to blow his phone away with my Nexus.
Thanks!
Check the link in my sig for my guide to the 'best' kernels. I don't think there is a lot of difference between roms in terms of benchmarks results.

Motley is an overall great kernel
Hi there, I tested as many kernels as I can found but still I miss crucial things for me and haven't found yet something, btw all kernels seem same to me with little differences so has anyone saw a kernel that supports
1. Cifs
2. Openvpn
3. Uv ability to anything in the device? Like gpu?
4. Dual Rom (not crucial)
Damn I miss my s2/s3 days, maybe it's too early for N3 but all developers fell in the trap of benchmark and race to raise the mhz which is useless to most of people but banana appealing. If anyone spotted any kernel with extra features pls share it with me I can even beta test if needed.

I am sorry if what im about to ask is already posted somewhere (probably is), but this forum is pretty vast and I couldnt find what im looking for. The question is this, Im using Vanir ROM. Now with the inbuilt kernel I had around 20k benchmark on antutu. I flash hells core, excited to see any difference and whoop, i got 14k. Also i checked the part with 3D testing and fps was higher for about 5-7 points. So what Im asking is this,What is the meaning of this and also how can I, how to put it to not sound noobish, tweak the kernel to perform/save battery etc.?Because Im assuming thats not the top what HellsCore kernel can do, am I right? Or if you guys have any kernels to recommend, all is appreciated. Also if this helps, Im using Nexus 4, Vanir ROM(as posted above) and dont know what else would you need to know to answer.
Thanks in advance
/So I rebooted and now I am on 20840 for some reason.
Benchmarks are not very conclusive abnout anything. Each phone is different each user has different needs and how and where there phone is used. Everyone will tell u to try this kernel and that kernel but u just have to find one that works for you

I get that, i was more concerned about those numbers. Why did it drop to 14k and then went to 20k again.
Probably some patches were included in the rom's kernel, which can affect the scores.
When you flashed another kernel (helldoctor), you stopped using these patches, so scores went down.

Anututu and other benchmarks depend on a number of factors/conditions which affect the final result . The major conditions which affect it result are below
1) The CPU temperature !! When ur phone gets hot the CPU throttle will automatically reduce the active cores and the clock speed to cool down your CPU !! This results in decrease in performance !! When you flash new kernels its possible that ur phone is hot and hence performance decreases
2) Using your phone while running tests also affect the results . for eg if there is a notification during the test or background sync going on it will affect the result
3) probably the kernel packed with vanir had 4 cores active all the time to increase scores and hells core has just 2 cores active ( at a given moment) will mean decreased performance
The ideal way to test kernels is as follows
1) Dirty flash your ROM before flashing kernel
2) Reboot your device after the first boot
3) Let it settle down for an hour
4) turn of data/WiFi during the test
5) see the kernels specs( like cores active/the maximum CPU speed) through an app like trickster/faux clock
6) Now run the test
7) after test let your phone cool down for 15 mins
8) repeat the test a few times and take the average of all scores
Kindly hit the thanks button as a token of appreciation
Antutu was never accurate if you ask me. Sometimes it goes down and the other it went up..so..
I see, thank you guys.
Benchmarks are like putting makeup on.
