is there any GOOD handwritten note apps (like something I could functionally use to take note on my 10" Viewsonic G-tab?) something similar to Dan Bricklin's® Note Taker HD App for the iPad maybe?
Try "Most It".. By far the best notes app I have tried.. I don't know how would it work on a tablet but you can give it a try..

How does it do with pdfs with diagrams and images? Is it viewable and clear? Any suggestions for pdf reading if not this one?

From my experience, using android apps like ezPDF Reader or Repligo Reader, the issue is not visibility - which is good IMO, but scrolling, which is laggy and not precise.
A wider screen of a tablet would be better for you specific purpose.
That is a deal breaker thanks

If you plan on doing a lot of PDF picture / technical manual viewing I'd get a nook color.
One of the primary uses for the Nexus 7 will be as an eReader. To that end I was wondering if anyone conform whether the android Kindle app is compatible with the Nexus 7.

No reason it wouldn't be, along with the B&N Nook app, Kobo, etc., etc.

You should definitely be able to use the Kindle app, as well as the Amazon AppStore, and the Amazon MP3 store.
I assumed as much I just wanted to be 100% sure as that's where all my books are ;-)

Kindle app on Nexus 7 and an actual Kindle side-by-side would be a nice comparison, if anyone can comment on that.
I could have tonight. I forgot to do it tho.

The best kindle experience is available not on kindle fire rather it is available on Kindle iPad app. The interactive magazines on kindle store does not appear so interactive on kindle fire however the same magazine is very interactive on kindle iPad app. This is kind of surprising but true and I know because I have both. Also the iPad screen has better aspect ratio in order to fit the magazine fully in the screen whereas on kindle fire it does not fully fit the screen because of 16:9 aspect ratio and same is the case with Nexus 7. You can read magazines without much zoom on iPad as compared to any 16:9 screen ratio table which includes not only the 7 inch but the 10 inch tablets as well. I use to own Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I know how good the magazines used to look on iPad as compared to Tab 10.1.
Don't worry though I myself have order Nexus 7 for myself but I won't be using it for reading though. I wanted a 7 inch Tegra 3 tablet for gaming so thats what I am going to do on it. I hope that games would be compatible with 4.1 soon. The biggest problem with Android Eco System i.e. app compatibility on multiple devices.

That might be true for magazines, but for ebooks I've found a 7" in portrait to be ablout perfect. It just about equals a single paperback page, and is very easy to old for longer periods of time. Text on my iPad is excellent, but it gets heavy after awhile and I don't like the Kindle 2-page format in landscape. And the iPad is positively ungainly in portrait.

Play Books apps is nicer than the Kindle Android app, but, I think I'll do my book shopping on the Kindle store because it's very easy to strip DRM and share with others in my household. I haven't been able to find a solution to make Play Books DRM free/share with others I'd share a physical book with otherwise.

I agree that play books has a better ui, but I keep both on it as I use the kindle app to side load the books I already own, if I don't find a book on the play store for a great deal I also tend to buy them on kindle since its multiplatform.

Yes that's what I said in my post as well that books are ok with 7 inch tablet but magazines are not so exciting. For books 7 inch is ideal size. Kindle magazines for Android Kindle are most not interactive although same magazine when downloaded on iPad is interactive. It is kind of strange because the Kindle app for iPad is also made by Amazon and why would amazon make a better app for iPad as compared to Kindle fire. It confuses me. The Kindle for Android is same as for fire.

Can anyone provide screenshots of the same book/page on the Nexus 7 and a Kindle e-ink device. Just wondering if I'm going to still want an e-ink device for reading in addition to my N7.
Thanks.

I'll be keeping my Kindle as the e-ink display is just a lot easier on the eyes for reading as well as the battery life being superb.

Sorry, missed that in your post. I'll note that I've decided that a good combination is a new iPad for a 10" device and a Nexus 7 for a 7" device. Best of both worlds, really.

e-ink is really nice for brightly lit environments. battery life is much better. and they they weigh a lot less. but they make really crappy general-purpose tablets

Sure. I actually have both, because I live in SoCal and so no tablet is going to work everywhere I want to read.

The wife has a kindle and a flyer. If I had to choose one I would pick a tablet because its so much more versatile but eink readers are very good at the one thing they are for. Synchronization between both kindle and the app makes it quite convenient to have both too.

The margins in the Kindle app on Android are still too large for my tastes. They are much smaller on the Fire proper. So there is a difference between Kindle app and Kindle device.
I'm currently using Aldiko for sideloaded epubs. I'm hoping Google Books will allow sideloading in the near future as I find it a better user experience than Aldiko.
I've tried the vast majority of other readers, and so far haven't found anything better.

The Nook android app allows sideloading of epubs. It's very nice as far as the user interface.
As I want to replace paper works I am willing to view ppt slides with N7. I also want to edit doc files and read professional books with N7. Any one out there has experience to use N7 as ppt viewer? Is the size good for viewing ppt slides?
You'll probably want to get a Nexus 10 which have higher resolution for that purpose, it'll be worth it if is important. The Nexus 7 screen is too small.
There are plenty of office apps, just search for them in the PlayStore.

The paid version of Docs-to-go works very well with Excel, Word, Ppt, and Pdf files.
I use kingsoft office suite myself, its free and works pretty well.

So I returned my iPad air and everything is awesome. But one thing I can't get over is why PDF viewing on the Note 10.1 is so inferior to the iPad .
The Note has a better processor and more Ram, shouldn't the PDF viewing be super smooth? Is it an Android issue where PDF viewing is so slow?
On my iPad I could use GoodReader to open 4 different PDFs and it wouldn't really stutter or lag, but it seems like all the PDF apps for the Note (RepliGo, office suite, Polaris, and more) all seem to have trouble rendering even one PDF. The rendering issue is especially noticeable when skipping around.
Is anyone else as frustrated as me with the PDF situation?
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
Depends on the reader and the coder imho. I use mantano reader and its super smooth. Ezpdf reader lagged and stuttered on me no matter if I'm on my note 10. 2014, note 2, or my original note 10.1

Try PDF Max for reading, it is the smoothest PDF reader I've ever seen on Android, and it should be just as good as iOS.
Ezpdf, pdf max, or mantano reader, none hold a candle compared to smartq reader, speed wise, and when you skip fast through pages, it renders them smooth and clear, ezpdf is not smooth, pdf max and mantano reader are smooth but they both render the pages in a blurred way then "clear" it up, which I hate. Smartq reader is the only pdf reader that can render the pages fast and clear as they appear

Yes! Thank you so much, smartq is insanely fast. Not the best for annotation, but it's awesome for PDF viewing. I wonder why the other apps can't use a similar rendering engine.

You are welcome! I noticed it's a Chinese app, which comes with some quirks like confirm before exit, but the engine itself is really fast, even when dealing with pure image pdf
