Ive been living with a stupid freaking blackberry style for the past 2 months. I CANT TAKE IT ANYMOREEEE I want my evo back sooo badly but no matter what I do to repair, nothing works. I have been working on this for a while now.
3 digitizers and lcd's have been used. My problem right now is that i believe that the digitizer port is somehow messed up. The annoying thing is that sometimes, randomly, the digitizer/touch panel will work and the phone will work perfectly. Which is what happened a couple of days ago after i finally got a new lcd after some wait and everything was going perfect until it happened again. What happens is that in hboot i get a touch panel fail, the phone will not boot past splash, and recovery is inacessible. If i remove the digitizer cable altogether it will boot and it will let me go to recovery. I have tried the 2 others i have and rarely, one will work.
You guys have ANY ideas? I tried cleaning with 91 alcohol and that didnt help.
PLEASEEEE I miss my 3 year old child.
EDIT and yes i am up at 4 like i have been to fix my evo
ebay.
i know fixing it by hand is a path you have gone a long way down and if that's something fun for you (and I realize it is for some) by all means keep on going down that path.
but times have changed from the days when evos were $450 on ebay.
now you will probably pay less for a mint condition clean esn evo than you would for all the parts you described, to say nothing of the value of your time.
i have personally repaired front speakers, rear speakers, camera lenses and digitizers/LCD assemblies, just about everything but the vibrator. i once loved tearing apart evos. but now i just buy evos whole.
intermittent connection problems are the worst. do you really want to spend more late nights fighting this thing? craigslist, ebay, swappa, whatever. get this behind you.
100% what NxNW said.
If it is in fact the connector on the board, then this will be no fun at all. The solder points on that are far too much work AND risk for the reward. Although, you can find a good board, just the board alone. Same part# as the one you got and just exchange whatever it needs, if anything. But it really is better to ebay the whole device. I got one for under $12 that needed a new charge port. Another buck and some soldering and BOOM.

You guys are right; just looked on ebay and theirs mobo's on here auctioning with no bids. 20$ for a fully functional one? Ill take it!
Thanks for the advice
my very quick survey of recent "completed auctions" for plausible looking phones with clean ESN's shows the current price for a non-janky Evo you could just activate and use as-is is around $60
i am seeing a range of $40 to $100 depending on whether it is in below average condition on the low end, or pristine condition plus some accessories on the high end.
basically 60 bucks for a ready-to-go evo with just a battery, no charger or usb cable, possibly no sd card.
a lot of auctions with reserve prices of $70 and higher are closing with the seller not getting any bids that meet the reserve.
on the flip side if you are "winning" an auction at $20, that phone is just "for parts".
actually i have bought phones described as "for parts" that *already* had parts harvested from it (usually the USB/charing port). sometimes you just get a picked-over carcass.
if the description doesn't *say* clean ESN, it's not. i even had to send back an evo once because the ESN was bad even though the seller said it was ok. they refunded my money claiming someone *else* told them it was clean. whatever. ebay can be a hassle but there's an endless supply of cheap clean evos out there, you just have to be observant.
If the seller is in your area, I would also HIGHLY suggest meeting them in person at a Sprint store to activate it on your line. I have seen dozens of posts in the S3 forums recently about people getting stuck with a blacklisted phone because the seller reported it stolen after selling it to them. So beware.

The one for 20 said it was in fully functional form. I only need a phone for a couple more months. Unfortunately, i forgot to bid before the auction ended I need to get better at ebay lol

I know this probably isn't the place for this, but I definitely need a place to vent where people can understand the frustration lol.
Yesterday I accidentally killed my HD2. The story goes as follows
I decided to clean my room and be productive for once, my phone was securely placed on my desk. I moved a glass of lemonade from the desk onto the floor so it would be out of the way so I could clean better.
So I started moving some things around on the desk, and next thing I know I see my HD2 falling like in slow motion. It landed in the glass of lemonade so I quickly fished it out. Both the water damage mark on the phone and battery were gone, so there goes my warranty call, and insurance was out of the question since T-Mobile's insurance only covers 2 insurance claims in a 12 month period regardless of which phone.
I had made a claim in June of 09 on a Sidekick LX I had damaged, and recently in May for losing my HD2. So they dropped me from the insurance making it impossible to make a claim.
So I left the phone out to dry and took the battery, sim, and sd card out it never turned off when it went into the lemonade, but the buttons became stuck on. More specifically the Volume up button became stuck on even if I pressed volume down.
So after letting it dry and blowing out every hole with compressed air it still wouldn't become unstuck, so I tried the one thing I knew would work. Electrical contact cleaner... Bad move on my part, that started to dissolve the plastic parts on the phone thus killing it completely.
Now I have no phone and can't justify spending another $400-$500 on a phone since I just bought that not 3 months ago for $450(I buy all my phones off contract)
I am very angry about what happened although I can only be angry at myself because of it... So anyone have any stories like this they'd like to share?
EDIT: Yay! 100th post!
Man that sucks, I watch over my HD2 like a hawk and have it with me all the time, either that or I will leave it in the middle of a table and far away from the sides.
Also what's this watermark thing you speak of?
Wow chaos, that sux big time, sorry to hear that! (yes, it was kinda painful just to read that!)
The only ray of sunshine I can offer is the fact that it's much easier now (following tmo's father day promo) to find new and near-new HD2's on the open market for less than they were before...in fact, there's at least one member here (atxdrift) who's selling his (only slightly used) one for $350. So, you might be able to find an acceptable one for a bit less than you expected. I know it's not the best answer, but there might be hope for you yet
sounds almost like a modern day comedy slapstick sketch,. , the day just getting worse and worse.

small white dot, look top left of the battery.
I wish I had renters insurance, what's most likely going to happen is I'm going to have to spend a month with a cheap pre-paid phone until I can get the money to buy a new phone.
I have a hard time trying to justify spending another $250-$300 on even a used HD2 since it is still the same phone, so chances are I might be leaving the HD2 community unless I find a really good deal.
I'm gonna hold out until the T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S comes out and give that a shot, so it's going to be a very long month lol. I've always had a smart phone, so it's gonna be weird going without one for a while.
1st try soaking it in clean fresh water then opening it up and drying it out. See if the suger is gewwing up the buttons. As long as no power is on or in the phone it shouldn't damage it. About a new HD2. Don't worry about it. I see them for same 2 weeks old on CL in mint condition for $225 - $250 almost everyday. I always go that route because even if the phone breaks I can still buy another for cheaper then buying it new with insurance. Since you already own the SD card you could proably sell yours for $30 or $40 and get the price under $200. Plus a digi/LCD combo is $150 so you can recover that too. So think about parting it out too. Once you part it all out, sell the sd card, and get a deal on CL your gonna probably make a couple dollars or pay like $50 for a new HD2.
I'm currently selling these two phones on ebay.

If you are interested in either let me know and I can probably give you a discount on the auction if you win it. I can't give it away but I don't mind just covering my costs.
if you always buy your phones out of contract, why not just bite the bullet and renew???
I bought my HD2 this week on ebay for $330 flat, brand new condition and everything included but the SD card (had my own anyway)... I'm sure there are similar deals out there and probably better, a lot of people were disappointed with HD2's software (lol guess they didn't know what Windows Phone was all about) and want to get rid of it for an Android device, so keep an eye out for those deals. Some people really don't know what they've got. Sorry that happened to you, I was really bummed when I dropped my TP2 and the speakerphone jacked up. But I made the call anyway and they replaced it with a brand new one for free, so now I have a new HD2 and a new TouchPro2 as a backup. My suggestion is always try to keep a nice backup so that you're not completely devastated if the inevitable happens... But every time I drop mine or have to pay or make a call I learn a lesson, lol... Take it as a learning experience.
There going for 250 on craigslist
I got mine off CL with a total of 5 hours of use in mint condition. Guy was asking for $300 for phone alone at 2am. I texted him offering a trade and cash and he said cash only. So jokingly I said well if its in mint condition, you have the box, the SD card that still has the transformers on it, the charger, the case, and headphones, I'll give you $250. He texted back 5 minutes later saying "When can we meet?" Turns out the new Iphone was $300 with a new contract and he said he could come up with the extra $50. So I met him and got it and sure enough it was mint with not a spec on it. I bought it and turned out his girlfriend was there selling hers for the same price for another iphone. Unfortunately I didn't have another $250 on me and they sold it an hour later. The fact is the HD2 while being the nicest phone around is just too much phone for many people, they don't understand you have to install apps by cabs, they don't get the 10 years of upgrades and mods we have. So they just want to get some money back out of it and get an iphone or android. Most are listed from $285-$400. But most will take around $250 cash. All the ones you see for $300 keep getting posted over and over, just offer them some cash and they will bite. I would avoid posting offering $250 for one because you will probably have someone with a stolen one or messed up one try to sell you one. Just email each seller with an offer.
I know that I shouldn't laugh, but this reminds me of the time that my buddy used Goof Off to clean a stain on his sink not realizing that it was made of a plasticky material! He cursed himself for mucking up the plastic and then read the warning on the can that we are ALL too familiar with... "Please test product in a discreet location first to make sure that product does not damage XYZ" (<- Obviously paraphrasing)
My friend spilled soda on his crt monitor and it still worked. I can't see why it won't work after you clean it out and dry it. Then again I can't see why the lemonade glass didn't get knocked over.
I want to Sell mine
T mobile version Unlocked
mesg me is someone wants
So I had to go through warranty exchange with Customer Care since my volume rocker and bezel are loosening. I am past the 14-day exchange window so the stores will not do anything for me. One thing I was insistent on is that I did not want a refurbished unit (the device is less than 30-days old, why should I accept a refurbished unit?). The customer care associate was pretty insistent himself in telling me that he cannot request a new unit for me, however it is a "great possibility" that I would receive a new unit due to the phone being pretty new. I reluctantly agreed to have the replacement shipped to me, since they refused to let me do an in-store exchange.
Has anyone gone through this with their Vibrant? I'm looking to find people who have received warranty replacements from Customer Care, if anyone has gotten a new or a refurbed unit. Bottom line, I will not accept a refurbished unit. I figured worse comes to worse, I will send the refurbed one back and continue to ***** with them over the phone.
I'm flipping pissed too, because it was just so unnoticeable during the first 14-days, and then it inherently got worse with normal use. So now I'm feeling stuck. I do not know if the rep was telling me it will "likely" be a new unit just to get me to stop complaining, or if it's really true.
I'm with you - I wouldn't accept a refurbished unit either. However, since you are out of your 14-days (I assume you don't live in California) I don't think there is much you can do.
How long have you been a T-Mobile customer? The best bet to have issues resolved is always contact retention department. Not only are the employees there more knowledgeable, but based on your tenure with T-Mo, they often will do things for you other reps won't.
How far out of 14 days are you? I would take your box and everything back to the store you got it at and talk to the manager. Just be super nice about it and ask them to see if they can exchange it for you. Sometimes they can make exceptions, I know at my store we do.
I have exchanged phones in the past that were referbs and they come in pristine condition. They are practically brand new and have zero blemishes.
Don't worry about it.
Question though...
What do you mean the bezel is coming loose. I noticed that on the left side of the phone the bezel does not seem to be on correctly like the right side it might just be my eyes though. I hear a lot of squeaking from it though kinda annoying.
My volume button was loose out of the box feels cheap as hell when pressing it but it does not really bother me too much.

Mine is perfect. I am quite impressed with the build quality and iPhone4 fanatics who have looked at it have been impressed with it. Their quality control may be poor, but when you get a good one, its terrific.

The phone was purchased on launch day, so tomorrow will mark 30-days.
Unfortunately, I already tried returning my phone to the store. They wouldn't take it. They offered to call customer care to send me a refurb, which I declined. Worst part is, I can't try again because I am out of the area where it was purchased (we are on a family plan, the account holder is in Georgia, I'm in New Jersey, and I was on vacation there when we attempted the exchange this past week.) I do have the receipt though and can try at a different store, but I doubt a different store will want to inherit my problem.

We've had T-Mobile since 2002 or 2003, whatever year they first took over Voicestream. If this replacement is a refurb, I will be contacting the retention department.

Yes, that is what is happening to mine, and it's a defect. The bezel is loose and creaks when held. Also, the volume rocker rattles around in the phone.
I've played with the store display units, as well as another Vibrant we had purchased on our family account, and it has none of these issues. They are solidly built. So it's obvious that some of batches weren't properly assembled.
At my T-Mobile location my rep was having problems with her Vibrant and decided to try to tough it out. She did some master resets and didn't exchange within 14 days. She received a refurb from T-Mo.
As a manager I've gotten to the point where refurbs no longer bother me. Most of the time the refurbs come back in excellent condition, especially now that we're doing the certified open box program where people can buy COB phones.
Honestly if you put a refurb and a new vibrant side by side you couldn't tell the difference. If they hadn't said anything you wouldn't have known. Besides it comes with the same 1 year manufactures warranty so its still covered.
Did you purchase the phone at full price or as a subsidy? If at full price you have 30 days to exchange at store.

As a subsidy.
I know refurbs are supposed to be just as good or even better, but I've never had any luck with anything refurbished. Anything with a screen has always had hairline scratches. Either that or it's very obviously been used with lots of normal wear and tear and marks/scuffs.

It doesn't bother me too much I would have just perfected a more solid feeling phone.
Besides they charge you $10 to ship it out to you.
I would much rather save those 10 bucks and if the phone has some real issues I will return it. I also don't want to go through the headache of finding all my apps and redownloading them and getting my phone back to the way it previously was. Meh. I will stick with a few creaks here and there.
If you do however decide on doing this please tell us your experience with the referb phone. I am interested.
You whine too much. Who cares what it is. As long as you get a device that is new or refurbed, you won't even be able to tell the difference. Just enjoy your phone. And also, customer retention won't do anything as far as your problem.

Sorry, but I don't think I'm being unreasonable in requesting a new 500 dollar item when the one I just purchased was defective. Sure, 6 months down the line, something happens, give me a refurb. That's reasonable because the value of your purchase declines with time and with your own use. 30 days old is brand spanking new, and I should get the same if something is wrong with it.
I have one getting delivered to me today. I've been with T-mobile for close to ten years and they overnight shipped it for free to me. Mine is having an issue when charging where the usb cord is very loose. They rep said I would get a new or like new item but I will also be returning it if it not new. My phone is only 20 days old and I don't trust refurbished units enough when mine is only 20 days old. The loose card is making it so if the phone is not in the right position it won't charge

I just got a replacement unit from T-Mobile and frankly I have no idea how to tell whether it is new or refurbished. Is there a way to tell? I really don't care if it is refurbished as long as it looks like new and works properly (aside from GPS and compass of course), but I am really curious how you guys are able to tell whether the replacement unit you got is new or not.
I'm debating on buying the EPIC 4g. The super expensive price is already a deterrent for me. Also the fact that it is Samsung is another huge deterrent. I had the Samsung Moment and the charger broke on me 5 times. I had to take it in to Sprint every time and they charged me $50 each time and my device isn't even a year old yet. My charging port on my Moment has broken yet again so I have to charge the battery in an external charger. I'm not rough with my phones either. I take VERY good care of them.
There isn't any question in this post.
Hey, I have a few questions too. Penguins are neat. I really like pizza, but I hate mushrooms. Also, I really like going to the beach but driving through New Jersey really bothers me. I'm a good driver though.
On a totally unrelated note, buy the Epic.

1) It will likely be $200 or less even for upgraders a few weeks after release, assuming it doesn't sell out. Therefore if you wait and see what people experience with it and wait for some devlopment on it, then get the phone, you will be set
2) If something happens like a charging port breaking, that should be covered free under the warranty. If they charged you for it, then it's just because they can. Be smart and buy the $7/month insurance for your phone, then they'd probably handle issues like that for free, I would hope. Or you could always do the warranty through samsung if it came down to it. Also if you are waiting a few weeks before trying to get the phone, this gives you time to see if there seem to be any immediate build quality issues, from charging port trouble to other issues.
Guys, just because the OP didn't specifically ask questions doesn't mean there were obvious questions/concerns in there. Don't be dense/rude.
Thanks for not being rude. I did have the warranty. Sprint said that the charging port breaking was "physical damage," that's why I had to pay $50 each time.

That's total BS. I'd say show me where there is any sign of physical damage or stress put on my phone. If they can't show, prove or explain it to you, then they can't very well charge you for it. You need to play hardball with these people. Charging ports break all the time, Pretty much every laptop I know of has the port/cord wear out/break after a couple years, except for mine of course. It just happens. Either way that would suck with the epic then because it has a $100 deductible not a $50 deductible.
You could always print out the policy and explain that you believe the issue to be due to "normal wear and tear" as the contract covers "Mechanical or electrical failure, routine maintenance, and failure from normal wear and tear. File your replacement request within 60 days of incident." I'd call the port just outright breaking through no fault of my own, a mechanical failure due to wear and tear. Then again I guess they could just pull the "act of god" card on you.
"The Program does not cover:
1> Incidental or consequential damages; 2> FAILURES CAUSED BY ACTS OF GOD, fire, flood, explosion,
war, terrorism, strike, embargo, acts of the government, military authority, or the elements"
that makes sense right? God wanted your phone to die because he secretly is out to get you, just like those little green men you hide under the bed from haha. Either way I'd say they just try to charge you wherever they can, and if you stay calm and logically explain your position and belief and know yourself to be in the right, and stand your ground, you can often get away without paying the deductible.

For a guy who thinks $250 is a "super expensive price" you sure did bend over pretty quickly when sprint charged you $250 grand total for your 5 broken chargers. Although you are most likely just a stupid troll I felt the need to point this out. In the off chance that you're not a troll, please refrain from trying to open cans or peel potatoes with your usb port in the future, kthx.

My hero buttons are chipped as well, but that's just regular wear and tear... Most of the people on here don't put their phones down so it wears and tears a lot faster than a regular customer. I know plenty of people with a hero who don't have the chipped paint problem as well
I have a feeling the OP is going to a third party store and getting ripped off, because #1, if he had insurance and the phone *was* actually physically damaged, the Moment would cost $100 each time, and it would have to be through the insurance company. If he was buying new chargers, it's $40, but the charger has a 1 year warranty on it.
Frankly, I think this guy is either exaggerating, completely BSing us, or being ripped off by a third party store and for some reason isn't questioning it.

To the jerks who say I'm lying or exaggerating: it was from the corporate Sprint store on Tyler in Riverside & the "physical damage" was the charging port. I asked them if they could show me the damage & they claimed it was on the inside. $250 that I paid was over the course of 8 months so I didn't feel it as much as having to pay $350 then wait 8 weeks for $100 rebate. I know this is the internet & I expected internet tough guys but this is ridiculous.
Thanks to the polite people who are trying to give me good advice. I'm relatively new to smart phones and the policies regarding phone insurance.

One question then. How did they charge you $50 for the phone issues? I mean entropism brought to attention that the moment is a tier 2 $100 deductible phone. Any repairs would have to charge you $100 not $50. If this is all really true and is what happened as a sprint corporate store then please elaborate on how this happened.
I'm not sure why they only charged me $50. They gave me the option to get a replacement under the warranty for $100 after the third time I brought it in. I was underemployed so I could barely spare the $50.
They actually said "the damage was on the inside" so they wouldn't show it to you? I'm sorry, you're getting completely ripped off. Not to mention, they can't "fix" a charging port. They either replace the device for $119 in store, they cover it as a discretionary repair for free, or they send you to the insurance company for a $100 replacement to be shipped out to you under the physical damage policy of your TEP. Also, keep in mind that it CAN'T be the insurance company in this case, because you can only make 3 claims in a year, not the 5 you're saying happened.
Sorry, something doesn't add up here.
Edit: one more thing that doesn't make sense: There's not even a $50 repair code in the computer. Even if they WANTED to charge you $50, they couldn't. So what the heck is going on?
OP, PM me your phone number, I'd like to get to the bottom of this, with your permission.

ok will do, thanks
I have a rooted HTC Evo, well 2 of them really, my girl friend and my own. My Evo was dropped and I broke the glass, but it works amazing still.
The only reason I'm getting rid of our Evos, is the simple fact I got a new job with AT&T and they are giving me free phone service.
So my question is this, what would be a fair price?
Phone 1
Fully Rooted Evo with a cracked screen
Phone 2
Hardly used Evo in perfect shape
Cables and Charges
They both have cases, black and red as well some cables and charges I'd throw in.
I was thinking $200 for the broken one and $350-$400 for the one in perfect shape. I'm just looking to cover my ETF with Sprint.
When I have something to sell I'll usually check Craigslist to see what other people are asking and Ebay to see what other people are actually getting. I personally think $200 is overly optimistic for any phone with a broken screen, but that's only based on what I'd be willing to pay.
Pete
I would take the broken one in to Sprint and have them fix the screen before you sell it.

Or if you're feeling confident, a friend of mine got hold of a broken Evo from another friend of his. (This other friend just went and bought a whole new phone, so the old one was fine ESN-wise, it just had a cracked screen.) Anyway, we scoured ebay and found the right replacement front panel (digitizer, lcd, and front panel housing) for about $65, it took less than 10 minutes to install and reassemble the phone and now it's good as new.

Why spend the money and take the risk when you can just bring it in to the store and have them do it for free?
Fix it for free? Seriously? So I can take it to my Sprint Store in Folsom, CA and have them fix it? I have insurance on the phone, but that company is insane to try to work with.

Yeah, as long as you have TEP on that line, they will fix a broken screen for free. It came with the new changes in Sprint TEP coverage last month. It's $35 for a new screen if you don't have TEP, which is still an awesome deal, big win for everybody. I'm about to go try it out myself, as I just got a crack in my screen a couple day ago.
Also, $200 is way too much for a broken phone, I'd say $100-$150. So, it's very worth it to get it fixed first. It may be different where you are, but here, NIB Evo's get about $350 and like new one's go for $300. Remember, the phone is in stock everywhere now, so anyone can go buy one from Sprint NIB for $450. I see them go for $425 on Ebay, but with Paypal fees, Ebay fees and shipping, ur back down to $350
My screen shattered. No warranty coverage, had it for a whole week.
I assumed that I would be able to throw a new screen at it and get it back functional for less than $100. Now, it looks like a new screen is $160. I'm more than slightly crushed. =(
One thread I found was showing some decently high going rates for parts, indicating I could sell the rest of my broken tablet for almost enough to get a new one. A quick search on ebay showed broken screen nexus tablets going for less than $100, leaving a large jump to get another tablet. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is there value in the parts of pieces?
Thanks y'all for any input you might have. Keep the shiny side up. =(
Depending on the retailer, you might want to take it back to them. Don't know what caused it to shatter, but you know where I'm going.
credit card loss/damage protection

If you bought with a credit card, check with your card company.
Bought mine with Amex card. Broke screen 17 days later.
Amex features 90 day theft/loss/accidental damage protection.
Filed claim online & cc account was credited with full purchase price in 2 days.
Nice about the purchase protection and they respond quickly. It sucks that Amex stopped their price protection. The announcement of the possible price drop is just right outside of the 30 receipt and definitely out of the return window.

I would sell it for parts. There was a broken N7 on eBay that sold for over $160. I say over because that was the last bid I saw and it has days left on the auction. Then I would put that money towards a 32gb model. Last but not least, I would avoid doing whatever I did with the old one to break the screen.
