I know this probably isn't the place for this, but I definitely need a place to vent where people can understand the frustration lol.
Yesterday I accidentally killed my HD2. The story goes as follows
I decided to clean my room and be productive for once, my phone was securely placed on my desk. I moved a glass of lemonade from the desk onto the floor so it would be out of the way so I could clean better.
So I started moving some things around on the desk, and next thing I know I see my HD2 falling like in slow motion. It landed in the glass of lemonade so I quickly fished it out. Both the water damage mark on the phone and battery were gone, so there goes my warranty call, and insurance was out of the question since T-Mobile's insurance only covers 2 insurance claims in a 12 month period regardless of which phone.
I had made a claim in June of 09 on a Sidekick LX I had damaged, and recently in May for losing my HD2. So they dropped me from the insurance making it impossible to make a claim.
So I left the phone out to dry and took the battery, sim, and sd card out it never turned off when it went into the lemonade, but the buttons became stuck on. More specifically the Volume up button became stuck on even if I pressed volume down.
So after letting it dry and blowing out every hole with compressed air it still wouldn't become unstuck, so I tried the one thing I knew would work. Electrical contact cleaner... Bad move on my part, that started to dissolve the plastic parts on the phone thus killing it completely.
Now I have no phone and can't justify spending another $400-$500 on a phone since I just bought that not 3 months ago for $450(I buy all my phones off contract)
I am very angry about what happened although I can only be angry at myself because of it... So anyone have any stories like this they'd like to share?
EDIT: Yay! 100th post!
Man that sucks, I watch over my HD2 like a hawk and have it with me all the time, either that or I will leave it in the middle of a table and far away from the sides.
Also what's this watermark thing you speak of?
Wow chaos, that sux big time, sorry to hear that! (yes, it was kinda painful just to read that!)
The only ray of sunshine I can offer is the fact that it's much easier now (following tmo's father day promo) to find new and near-new HD2's on the open market for less than they were before...in fact, there's at least one member here (atxdrift) who's selling his (only slightly used) one for $350. So, you might be able to find an acceptable one for a bit less than you expected. I know it's not the best answer, but there might be hope for you yet
sounds almost like a modern day comedy slapstick sketch,. , the day just getting worse and worse.

small white dot, look top left of the battery.
I wish I had renters insurance, what's most likely going to happen is I'm going to have to spend a month with a cheap pre-paid phone until I can get the money to buy a new phone.
I have a hard time trying to justify spending another $250-$300 on even a used HD2 since it is still the same phone, so chances are I might be leaving the HD2 community unless I find a really good deal.
I'm gonna hold out until the T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S comes out and give that a shot, so it's going to be a very long month lol. I've always had a smart phone, so it's gonna be weird going without one for a while.
1st try soaking it in clean fresh water then opening it up and drying it out. See if the suger is gewwing up the buttons. As long as no power is on or in the phone it shouldn't damage it. About a new HD2. Don't worry about it. I see them for same 2 weeks old on CL in mint condition for $225 - $250 almost everyday. I always go that route because even if the phone breaks I can still buy another for cheaper then buying it new with insurance. Since you already own the SD card you could proably sell yours for $30 or $40 and get the price under $200. Plus a digi/LCD combo is $150 so you can recover that too. So think about parting it out too. Once you part it all out, sell the sd card, and get a deal on CL your gonna probably make a couple dollars or pay like $50 for a new HD2.
I'm currently selling these two phones on ebay.

If you are interested in either let me know and I can probably give you a discount on the auction if you win it. I can't give it away but I don't mind just covering my costs.
if you always buy your phones out of contract, why not just bite the bullet and renew???
I bought my HD2 this week on ebay for $330 flat, brand new condition and everything included but the SD card (had my own anyway)... I'm sure there are similar deals out there and probably better, a lot of people were disappointed with HD2's software (lol guess they didn't know what Windows Phone was all about) and want to get rid of it for an Android device, so keep an eye out for those deals. Some people really don't know what they've got. Sorry that happened to you, I was really bummed when I dropped my TP2 and the speakerphone jacked up. But I made the call anyway and they replaced it with a brand new one for free, so now I have a new HD2 and a new TouchPro2 as a backup. My suggestion is always try to keep a nice backup so that you're not completely devastated if the inevitable happens... But every time I drop mine or have to pay or make a call I learn a lesson, lol... Take it as a learning experience.
There going for 250 on craigslist
I got mine off CL with a total of 5 hours of use in mint condition. Guy was asking for $300 for phone alone at 2am. I texted him offering a trade and cash and he said cash only. So jokingly I said well if its in mint condition, you have the box, the SD card that still has the transformers on it, the charger, the case, and headphones, I'll give you $250. He texted back 5 minutes later saying "When can we meet?" Turns out the new Iphone was $300 with a new contract and he said he could come up with the extra $50. So I met him and got it and sure enough it was mint with not a spec on it. I bought it and turned out his girlfriend was there selling hers for the same price for another iphone. Unfortunately I didn't have another $250 on me and they sold it an hour later. The fact is the HD2 while being the nicest phone around is just too much phone for many people, they don't understand you have to install apps by cabs, they don't get the 10 years of upgrades and mods we have. So they just want to get some money back out of it and get an iphone or android. Most are listed from $285-$400. But most will take around $250 cash. All the ones you see for $300 keep getting posted over and over, just offer them some cash and they will bite. I would avoid posting offering $250 for one because you will probably have someone with a stolen one or messed up one try to sell you one. Just email each seller with an offer.
I know that I shouldn't laugh, but this reminds me of the time that my buddy used Goof Off to clean a stain on his sink not realizing that it was made of a plasticky material! He cursed himself for mucking up the plastic and then read the warning on the can that we are ALL too familiar with... "Please test product in a discreet location first to make sure that product does not damage XYZ" (<- Obviously paraphrasing)
My friend spilled soda on his crt monitor and it still worked. I can't see why it won't work after you clean it out and dry it. Then again I can't see why the lemonade glass didn't get knocked over.
I want to Sell mine

don't ask me how it happened, i'm just telling you that you can't rely on the HD2 drop test video on youtube... if someone knows a good place that will make my hd2 look like a new one again, please tell me!
Holy crap!!
Good luck on finding a new housing and screen. Might as well chalk this up as stupid/careless/accident and just get a new one.
pitchbend your not the only one mine was picked up by UPS yesterday afternoon and is off to HTC for repair.
When I first phoned the helpdesk hadn't even received the price list off the service centre. I had to phone them up the next day and then wait for Lee to call me back
Spares are like rocking horse crap at the moment and the only people that seem to have them are HTC's service centres.
I've been quoted £140 luckily the insurance will pay

Haha... Sorry for laughing, im not laughing at you. try to fix it under guarentee and say it happend wwith you thumb and pressed too hard or something
(its probaly not working that way but you can try, ''no'' you alreddy have and ''yes'' you may get)
Or maybe u can say: ''i have no idea how this happend, but i saw supicious little creatures jumping on the screen when i left my phone on the table at night''
This maybe sounds hillarious but i have said this one time when my SE w810 had a broken lcd. They said they done it for free because the funny make up story
Have you called HTC? Should be under warrenty? Not many other options...good luck.
Somehow I don't think throwing your phone off the ground will be covered by warranty!
Either pay the repair costs, or fork out for a new one I'm afraid.
I suppose you could buy a new one - and keep that one for 3 months until spares are available... then eBay it!
Do you people not have insurance on this phone?
Really, at £550 a pop, I would assume insurance would be a VERY sensible option.
And how the hell did you smash the bottom of that screen in?! Looks like someone stood on it.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never purchase any insurance for any of my phones. The last phone I've had was a $700 Diamond when it first came out. I check to make sure I have my phone on me at all time. NO. MATTER. WHAT. I've grown to the point where I'm very paranoid when I step out of my car and didn't feel the phone in my pocket. Everywhere I go, I make sure the phone is in a secure spot (ie, carrying case) if not, I will make sure it's in an enclosed pocket (front pants pocket). Don't ever put your phone on your shirt pocket or anywhere with an opening because when you bend over to pick up something...BAM!! Just simple reminders that many tend to overlook. It's just a higher level of awareness when you spend an upward of $700-$1000 for a phone.
hi,
first of all a big 'sorry you', i know how it feels when a brand new toy dies.... i think spareparts are not available at this early time after release. and the glas is maby a part of the display itself wich makes it expesive. so best will be to send to htc for repair.

and if you want to try this, than you should send thme a copy of the book 'the wee free man' (i attached a picture of the cover), to proove your words .
regards mad.
to say that must be heartbreaking has to be the understatement of the year... lots of dude's don't bother with phone insurance but have you thought about claiming of your house and contents? If you have it the excess fee will surely be less than the cost of outright replacement...
yours in deepest sympathy
I'd go online and purchase some insurance, wait a few weeks and...
Thats nasty mate, I feel for you!
Insurance is all well and good but as with any insrance company the do not like paying out, you have to chose your words very carefully when telling them how it happened!
Know how you feel.
Oh,
That picture sent a shiver down my spine . Looks like the dog's been at it!
Year before last I got my shiney TytnII Christmas Eve, and trod on it Christmas morning. Certainly wasn't feeling seasonal after that.

When you are 16 years old, and owning a $1000 Sharp IQ8300M with 128KB RAM, and repairing your bike's tyre with a bucket of water to find the hole in the tyre, and you drop your $1000 dollar gadget in the bucket while bending over,
you will never, ever , ever ever put your phone in some risky place again. Ever. Ever.

Got mine insured through 'Supercover' - £9.99 per month covers my HD, and the wife and brother in law's iphones. Think (for the gadget mad) they do a 5 gadget cover for £14.99.
Feel your pain - my HD was replaced within 3 days of getting it thanks to an unzipped pocket.
Good luck with it!
EDIT - here's their link if it's any use
http://supercoverinsurance.com/gadget-insurance.php
EDIT - the wife has suitably informed me that Supercover now do the underwriting, and you need to go through a broker. Link attached

This site http://cnn.cn will get it, but it's still to early you need to be patient or rich. they are based in Hong kong I've bought a cover once and got it in three weeks (good quality).
hi,
while surfing the net im stumble upon this honkong guy , i dont know everything about them, and never bougth something from them. but they offer the frontglas with the touchscreen, so if someone is in need for it, this may help.
mad.
Like others I cracked the screen on my beloved nexus one. keys and this phone is a pocket obviously dont mix
So i jamp straight on ebay grabbed a screen for £35 and sat down to repair screen.
Took one look at phone and thought better of it and headed to my mates phones shop who is quiet good at repairing phones.
we spent an hour stripping it all out from the back before finally been able to put the new digitizer (screen) in,
then whilst putting it all back together we managed to damage 2 of the stupid little copper antena's on the bottom of device,,cellular radio antennas to be precise. we tried to solder them back onto the circuit board but did'nt work...
now i gotta a £400 phone which works perfectly but only gets a cellular signal outside but not inside. and consequently its on sale on ebay for parts for someone because the only place to get them from is HTC,,,,and they literally rape you for them.
and me been me i'd rather buy something else after seening how cheap tacky bits of made in china rubbish they put in this handset.
what the phone can do is awesome...but seriously guys if you ever get to see one of these stripped down you'll soon loose faith in HTC's components. they are cheaper than cheap...almost to the point you cannot handle them physically...a total disgrace!
rant over lol
You screwed your phone yourself and now blaming it on HTC... Just send your phone to HTC before you break some more components in the process of fixing one....
its going on ebay....the parts on this phone are pants.....motorola droid here i come!!!!!
1. Literally rape you? **** off.
2. Chinese components in a phone made by a Taiwanese company? Shock horror.
Phone antennas are fragile on all phones, sucks to be you, but you've no-one to blame but yourself.
Lol dude, almost everything is made in China now. How about u just stop buying stuff now?
Yea. You're right. This thing is crappy. I mean I've only dropped mine with no case on it 5 or 6 times now and with the case in 7-8 times. this crappy thing still works. guess I'm going to have drop it off the top of a building. What's amazing is how people like yourself break a phone and then blame the manufacture, get over yourself. YOU broke the phone YOU TRIED to fix it when you should have sucked it up and sent it back to HTC to get it fixed. Probably cost you what, $150. You have no one to blame but yourself. I need an otterbox so when I get pissed I can throw this thing against the wall. theni when / if it breaks I can start a thread on how cheap the cases are made because they are from China. ok. rant done. lol.
Wow, what an idiot. Where do you think moto droids are made? China thats where, but no worries, in your hands it'll be another paper weight.
Speaking of components can we talk about the "flash" on this camera? Its really shameful. If they are going to sell a phone in a way that doesn't afford the consumer the opportunity to try it out (in a store) that's fine but its components really need to work. I shouldn't be put through the embarrassment of maneuvering my wife for 10 minutes trying to get a picture that isn't completely black only to be forced to use my mothers 6 year old pink Casio. Thanks HTC, you're awful. I wish Google, which is awesome, would head over to Sony or Samsung and give me hardware worth at least $300. Hell id even pay upwards of $575 for something like that.
So here's the deal, since I got my Evo the back cover hasn't fit properly - I don't mind too much so I placed a small sheet of paper which gave the back the proper curve and fixed it.
But now I've got a new issue starting to appear - The screen coming loose towards the bottom!
My friend got an Evo and his is flawless, why should I suffer from pre-ordering!?
I work in Chicago, and naturally I went to a Radioshack close to where I actually live - no Evo's, can't help me.
I call Sprint, they tell me go to where I bought it or all the can do is sent me a re-certified phone - that's bull****, the phone is brand new & not even two weeks old yet.
I go to the Radioshack where I bought it - No Evo's, all they can do is call me when one comes in. Also claim they haven't been sent any since launch.
So here it is, I'm a new Sprint customer who just switched from Verizon and they are already leaving me dry. I've got 30 days to cancel all this, yet they don't seem to care enough to get me a new phone.
My phone is brand new and defective, how the hell does Sprint think they can send me some re-certified model!?
Do they have some deal where if they don't send phones back to HTC they get a discount? I mean seriously, if this phone isn't under a manufacturer's warranty against defects it damn well should be!
This also doesn't cover the fact when I preordered, Radioshack told me there was no $10 data fee - not to mention failed to tell me about activation fees and Sprint surcharges!
I asked about it, almost insisting they could be wrong, yet they kept reassuring me there was no charge. I put $50 down on a non-refundable gift card to pre-order, bull**** they didn't know/disclose all costs when I asked! (Their disclosure of costs was "taxes")
If I don't get my NEW phone before 29 days, I will cancel the whole thing and rant anywhere and everywhere until I am heard!
EDIT: Let me put it this way, for all those who don't understand...If Sprint guaranteed me a new phone when there's availability, that would be 100% fine with me, this is not the case, they want to send me a re-certified phone right after I just bought one brand new!
EDIT #2: Here's my logic...the phone is provided by Sprint (to Radioshack), Sprint pays a spiff (to Radioshack), my service is through Sprint (which is paying off the phone), and my contract is through Sprint.
Why does the fact that I bought it at Radioshack even matter!? Sprint is at the core of all of this.
It's like saying a have a 1 year warranty on an Sharp TV that Sears sold me and trying to take care of it through Sears...after that 30 days it's not Sears' problem. The service through Sprint is ongoing and this phone is part of it, how is Sprint not responsible?
You have got to be kidding me with this post right? I guess you assume the magic phone maker ferry is going to make YOU a phone just so YOU can be happy, but everyone else has to wait until they get re stocked because they sold out of all their phones.
Please, just cancel it already, people like this ruin it for the rest of us. How can you not understand that being back ordered means NO ONE is getting new ones right now, they can't just make it appear out of nowhere. Yikes.
lol wow lets give baby what he wants....

My situation is similar. I planned on switching from AT&T to Sprint, however, now, I don't know what to do. I have two defective EVOs, bought from Best Buy, and I have called every Best Buy in a 1 hour driving radius from my home in order to locate one (5 or 6 of them), none had any AND they refused to even take down my information to call me when they came in. Basically, they just told me to screw off. I am free to call back whenever I want to check, but they refuse to hold it in store even if I find one. Apparently it's a first come first serve basis, since they already have my money, what do they care?
Best Buy told me to use my warranty, Sprint won't do me any good because I don't want a recertified phone, as mine isn't even two weeks old yet.
And it's sad, because I really like my Sprint service, but I don't have time to screw around driving all over the face of the planet, escalating issues, etc. I just want two working phones, and that's all. I don't want credits, I don't want freebies. I'll even buy two new screen protectors with my own money.
But, 30 days is fast approaching, and once that mark hits they're no longer liable to care at all about my issues, and I have a feeling that's just what will happen.
I'll try over the next two weeks to locate a replacement. Otherwise, I'll just have to cancel (and I feel bad for Sprint, as it's not really their fault).
I understand all that, but where in the contract does it say the 30 days is waved from such circumstances?
Where does it say after 30 days I will still be eligible to trade for a new phone?
You both seem to be missing my point, the contract says 30 days if you have issues or want to cancel, it doesn't mention circumstances such as this.
What makes you think they wont give someone bull**** about the 30 day policy?
I've been ****ed over at least once by every phone provider I've had, I don't put anything past them.
return phone and port out within 30 days, wait for EVO stock to come back in, port back in. You also got free service for the days you were with Sprint anyway so who cares.

You android users are ****ing pathetic. You think everyone should have to hack their phone and superglue the screen on after paying $200 for it. I can see why the poster is pissed. If the poor quality of the phone doesn't make everyone return it, then I'm sure the android fanboys telling everyone to 'suck it up' will. This type of stuff is the reason android will never be taken seriously.

This is not even close to accurate in so many ways. First of all, he isn't complaining that he doesn't like the phone, he's complaining that he has a defective one and they don't have one in stock immediately to replace it.
Second, I guess you should tell that same horrible argument to the iphone, blackberry, porsche, ferrari, lambo, etc. owners that buy their high priced items only to find out there is a problem of some kind. There will ALWAYS be problems. That's why we have warranties and replacements, you just gotta be a little patient sometimes. This whole I WANT IT RIGHT NOW OR I'M GONNA RAISE HOLY HELL attitude is why companies have stopped caring if they fix things or not, there will always be nitwits and numbskulls who complain even if theirs is the only one to ever have an issue. The thing is, if you are paying for your insurance plan, they will cover it as long sa you have the phone and replace it 100 times if they have to or upgrade you to the next model up. It's a feature sprint is great with and will go out of their way to help you with. If your phone can't be fixed by simple methods in the store, you get a new one. Problem is, at the moment, there aren't any left in stock, so you may have to wait a little bit to get one. If you like the phone except for the hardware trouble, don't sweat it, they'll give you a new one as long as you own in and as long as you have the insurance plan for 7 a month. If you don't, then add it before 30 days and don't worry about your phone ever being defective.

It really doesn't matter what you think - in the end it's a horrible business decision by Sprint. They give people the option to cancel in thirty days, then sell people a phone that breaks in 2 weeks. I think the expectation of having it last longer is not extraordinary.

That has 0 to do with sprint though, this will be HTC's problem. I'm not mad at all, I'm dumbfounded by the ignorance of people that are posting on some of these issues. Anything you buy could have trouble, if the company that sells it to you is willing to stand behind it and replace it for nothing, why sweat it? It's not like they are saying you're screwed haha you have to pay to fix with ti or live with it broke, they'll fix it for him free of charge, they just have to have one in first.
How in the world this justifies a post of how horrible sprint is and how they are stiffing their pre order customers I have no idea, how can you replace a defective item if you have nothing to replace it with?

That's pretty uppity to say, considering the OP was worthless in making the post to begin with and flat out wrong in saying sprint won't help their customers. I am def trying to help him, by showing that sprint will fix it as soon as possible and for free, but some people just don't get it.....
The issue imo is people come in with both guns blazing acting like add holes and wonder why it rubs people the wrong way.

You didn't say that even once and nor did Sprint.
I bought a new phone, I want a NEW replacement...that's all I don't care if I have to wait a month as long as I get what I should very well be entitled to (and the current phone doesn't die completely during that month)!
EDIT: Come to think of it you're changing your attitude drastically after seeing other feedback, it disgusts me, you want to put others down and can't take the heat in return.

Say what?? Tell me, can you do a google search? Can you see sprints insurance policy? Better yet, can you make it to a sprint store and talk to a rep? They will tell you, if the phone is defective and you have insurance on it, they will replace it for you. If it's something you caused, such as losing it or absolutely destroying it, you pay a deductible and then get the phone replace. Obviously you've never been with sprint before, because not only do they stand behind this policy, they do it with 99% of the time no trouble. A quick trip to sprints site and google will verify this.
The attitude towards this issue hasn't changed at all, I simply don't get why someone would state in a thread that sprint is stiffing pre order customers. How can you possibly replace the first run defective issues if you DON'T HAVE ONE TO REPLACE IT WITH. When they come in, you'll get one, it's really not that complicated.
Look guys just my opinion. Don't like it tough.
People that have been doing this awhile know two things:
BuY from a private sprint store and you can run into trouble
Buy from retailer x and if it breaks you can't expect retailer y to fix it
So we act like cheap ****s and buy from retailers that don't have the rebate and we end up being stuck with said retailer should something happen. You can always send your device in to htc for repairs.
if it were me I'd return it, and buy from a sprint corporate store and let it be lesson learned. When you buy **** from third parties and it doesn't work out there can be issues. Sprint can't tell if that device came from ebay, bb or shack. I don't se how they are responsible for fixing what you retailer should fix.
If you want sprint to fix it, buy it from them.
Sprint doesn't make the device so before you start comparing apples and oranges think about it.

I shouldn't have to have an insurance plan to replace a defective phone that's entitled to be replaced in the first place.
I may end up adding it, but it's ridiculous I should even need it for this particular instance!

Sprint retails to them, what the hell do you mean they can't tell where it came from!?
They register the device right in the store on contract, Sprint pays them a spiff...

That's such a horrible mindset though. you're telling me you should be able to buy a defective computer, or car, or whatever, and with no insurance plan be able to just have it replaced whenever you want?
If you don't want the $7 sprint insurance, yet another quick search would show you that HTC has a 1 year warranty on the phone. you can send it back to HTC, and they'll send you a new one when it comes in stock. Or, you cna do what most people have figured out, and for $7 for the life time of the phone, take it to the local sprint store and get a new one for free. You think you can buy a laptop with no extended plan from the place you bought it and have them replace it for free if it's defective? You have to send it to the manufacturer to do so, same as this HTC phone. Or, add the insurance, and never worry about it no matter what.
I just don't see why this is so complicated! Go ahead and send it back to HTC if you don't want to spend the extra 7 a month, you can do that if you want, just be prepared to be without one for a few weeks, just like any other product that has this happen....
To me, you sound like the type that would go to a car dealer and buy a car, and if it has an issue after the first month or so you DEMAND a new car RIGHT AWAY instead of letting the dealer at least have a chance to look at it and see if it's something that can be fixed without much trouble. I can't stand those kind of people.
Ive been living with a stupid freaking blackberry style for the past 2 months. I CANT TAKE IT ANYMOREEEE I want my evo back sooo badly but no matter what I do to repair, nothing works. I have been working on this for a while now.
3 digitizers and lcd's have been used. My problem right now is that i believe that the digitizer port is somehow messed up. The annoying thing is that sometimes, randomly, the digitizer/touch panel will work and the phone will work perfectly. Which is what happened a couple of days ago after i finally got a new lcd after some wait and everything was going perfect until it happened again. What happens is that in hboot i get a touch panel fail, the phone will not boot past splash, and recovery is inacessible. If i remove the digitizer cable altogether it will boot and it will let me go to recovery. I have tried the 2 others i have and rarely, one will work.
You guys have ANY ideas? I tried cleaning with 91 alcohol and that didnt help.
PLEASEEEE I miss my 3 year old child.
EDIT and yes i am up at 4 like i have been to fix my evo
ebay.
i know fixing it by hand is a path you have gone a long way down and if that's something fun for you (and I realize it is for some) by all means keep on going down that path.
but times have changed from the days when evos were $450 on ebay.
now you will probably pay less for a mint condition clean esn evo than you would for all the parts you described, to say nothing of the value of your time.
i have personally repaired front speakers, rear speakers, camera lenses and digitizers/LCD assemblies, just about everything but the vibrator. i once loved tearing apart evos. but now i just buy evos whole.
intermittent connection problems are the worst. do you really want to spend more late nights fighting this thing? craigslist, ebay, swappa, whatever. get this behind you.
100% what NxNW said.
If it is in fact the connector on the board, then this will be no fun at all. The solder points on that are far too much work AND risk for the reward. Although, you can find a good board, just the board alone. Same part# as the one you got and just exchange whatever it needs, if anything. But it really is better to ebay the whole device. I got one for under $12 that needed a new charge port. Another buck and some soldering and BOOM.

You guys are right; just looked on ebay and theirs mobo's on here auctioning with no bids. 20$ for a fully functional one? Ill take it!
Thanks for the advice
my very quick survey of recent "completed auctions" for plausible looking phones with clean ESN's shows the current price for a non-janky Evo you could just activate and use as-is is around $60
i am seeing a range of $40 to $100 depending on whether it is in below average condition on the low end, or pristine condition plus some accessories on the high end.
basically 60 bucks for a ready-to-go evo with just a battery, no charger or usb cable, possibly no sd card.
a lot of auctions with reserve prices of $70 and higher are closing with the seller not getting any bids that meet the reserve.
on the flip side if you are "winning" an auction at $20, that phone is just "for parts".
actually i have bought phones described as "for parts" that *already* had parts harvested from it (usually the USB/charing port). sometimes you just get a picked-over carcass.
if the description doesn't *say* clean ESN, it's not. i even had to send back an evo once because the ESN was bad even though the seller said it was ok. they refunded my money claiming someone *else* told them it was clean. whatever. ebay can be a hassle but there's an endless supply of cheap clean evos out there, you just have to be observant.
If the seller is in your area, I would also HIGHLY suggest meeting them in person at a Sprint store to activate it on your line. I have seen dozens of posts in the S3 forums recently about people getting stuck with a blacklisted phone because the seller reported it stolen after selling it to them. So beware.

The one for 20 said it was in fully functional form. I only need a phone for a couple more months. Unfortunately, i forgot to bid before the auction ended I need to get better at ebay lol
So I don't treat my phones roughly, so I don't put cases on them, that and the X feels great in my hand....not anymore. Its screen is completely shattered after one drop, luckily I could use Touchless controls to call ATT to get insurance...there goes 200 more dollars after I paid 270 for it 2 weeks ago. And since it's my second claim on insurance I lose the right to pay for insurance (I know right? The first claim was because the USB port on my inspire died but whatever) for a year.
Time to buy a case. Be careful guys. let this be a word of warning.
(Here's hoping they at least let me Motomake again but I doubt it.)

Ouch I was lucky and saw the good folks spreading the Verizon discount code so I only dropped 140 on this, my favorite phone evar. I also don't use cases. Sorry to hear about your screen! Let us know what happens

Sorry to hear about your x!. Check out squaretrade.com next time for insurance. Their pricing is cheaper per month and best of all, NO refurbs! If they can't fix your phone in 5 days, they cut you a check for a new one. They're all I've been using since I got my ps3 a few years ago and was worried about it breaking
How did you drop it? Ive been looking for drop test videos for our phone but no luck

Bug landed as I was walking with my phone out, thought it was a yellow jacket, jumped, phone didn't jump with me.
I tried calling Motorola as well and it was the same price and a longer turnaround, I'll take the not paying for insurance for a year to get a phone asap, although it might just be a black or white one, I was able to get a case and protector for the X out of ATT but that's about it.
Picture attached.
And insurance says "You give us your 200 dollars and you LIKE YOUR BLACK PHONE"
Screw ATT. I sent a tweet to Moto/Motosupport with the picture too, of course there's no reply.
Keep pushing at MotorolaSupport, also try emailing them at supportforums [at] motorola [dot] com ... the guy who controls that twitter monitors that email.
Holy sweet handgrenades. I've now spent 8+ hours on the phone dealing with ATT/Motorola/Mobile Insurance, everyone wants 200 dollars to fix a phone that broke after one fall 13 days into ownership. Motorola has pushed me to sign paperwork to file an insurance claim then told me "Oh no you didn't have to do that" when it's their defective device. ATT is now on my side, but if Moto doesn't figure out their lives before the insurance claims clears....that'll be /fun/
I've been escalated to either level 2 or level 3 Motomaker support to see what they can do, although they've already heard my patented "voice of satan" telling them they're full of it.

I agree, Unfortunately if the screen is cracked from a fall/drop, it doesn't matter if it happens 13 days after or the minute you walk out of the store.

(This preword was written after the following post was completed, if any one feels I'm attacking them I apologize and I try to explain why I feel dropping it shouldn't have caused the extensive amount of damage. I've been told 4 different things by 5 different people within ATT/Motorola and the one thing I despise most is terrible service, this has gone from being a phone issue to being a support issue in my eyes.)
Because anything you pay for should not be this weak. It fell three feet. If it had just a surface crack, I'd be fine and suck it up and deal. This phone is destroyed. The screen is cracked just like the old iPhones, the phone casing is rattled enough that the volume buttons have slid into the casing of the phone a bit.
Should I have had a case on it? You know what I'll give you that point, it may have cushioned the blow and prevented the issue, but do you really believe something you pay money for should require extra protection to survive a fall taken during normal usage? That kind of thinking gives manufacturers the ability to put out inferior devices build wise, which to most of us here sounds like something that should come with the territory, but it shouldn't.
Nobody should pay 200+ dollars for a device, use it like any normal person, and have it break like this 13 days into owning it, if I was an extreme sports person (I'm 6'4 and uncoordinated so no) or if this was about a year and a half (even 6 months) into owning the device but this isn't the result of mishandling. It screams horrible build quality
In 10+ years of owning mobile devices, the only thing I've done to my phones is bend one USB plug out of shape. Besides keeping the device on a memory foam pillow, I've treated my Moto X extremely well.
I will accept that I dropped it. I will accept there was no case on the device. I will not accept that one mixture of those two facts will completely wreck a phone. Should Motorola/ATT have questions? I think a few are acceptable, but they should also stand by their customers who trust them not only with what is becoming a bigger part of their lives, their mobile service, but with their hard earned cash.
Maybe I'm idealistic and believe too much in the rights of the consumer but "You shouldn't have dropped it" just doesn't cut in my book when the damage is this extensive.

Don't drop your phone. The fact that it cracked up is not a reflection of the Moto X quality. It's the fact that "chance favors the prepared mind" as somone once said. Every time I switch to a new phone, there's always a thread like this one. Somone drops it and it blows up. That's all on you unfortunately. It sucks, we're all here for you, but there's no other alternative and that's why they sell insurance in the first place.
I got lucky many times with my Razr. My wife was lucky many times with her Iphone 4, until one day it dropped "JUST RIGHT" and el-cracko. But, completely her fault for dropping the phone.
If you rear end someone with your new car, you can't just claim it should have gotten damaged for such a light "tap".

It's glass. You cannot predict how it will break. I have seen devices fall off of a roof onto concrete and come away fine. I have also seen a phone fall from 2-3 feet onto carpet and the screen shattered from top to bottom. It has everything to do with how and what part of the device the impact occurs and nothing to do with build quality. Glass is glass and it breaks, period. I really feel bad for you and don't want to come across as an ass but when you are dealing with screens made of glass you can't blame build quality on a drop.
