Nexus S Love

I'm been really annoyed with all the hate being spewed about the Nexus S over the last several days. I've been meaning to post why I think most of the hate is seriously misinformed or not fully thought out, but I came across this post on Android and Me and it sums up almost exactly how I feel.

I am first in line for a Nexus S. I’m not sure what people are waiting for. This is Google’s phone for the next 11-12 months like the N1 was. Great support, great features. It uses the top tier hardware available to date. Best screen in the industry, best CPU, best GPU in a phone. Sure it’s no dual-core, but that disappointment is purely a consequence of the stupid rumours that have plagued this device since its conception.
This will be what the Galaxy S should have been. Great hardware fully controlled by Google.
For heavens sake, the SGX540 is a truly epic GPU, and vastly more powerful than the 535 found in the iphone and ipad. Apple’s devices run great games, and the Nexus S trumps both devices with its power. Sure we’ve seen it before in the Galaxy S, but the Galaxy S is a pure Samsung phone, crippled by it’s unoptimised OS, practically no support is given to it, the poor thing is still waiting for froyo in most of America. Because of this, we have not seen the true power of the hummingbird. That is until now. And it will be glorious.
The Nexus S is not last gen. It’s current gen. It just missed the dual-core boat. And people are fixated on it.
This very website said it was hard to believe that the Nexus S could be released with a dual-core, but plenty of other websites/blogs went nuts reporting the release setback was due to a dual-core upgrade. Everyone got set on the rumours and when this was released there was nothing but disappointment.
People are too busy thinking what the Nexus S could have been.
It’s silly really. Dual core is not ready. Dual core is not supported in any android revision to date, honeycomb may change this, but I highly doubt the upcoming tegra phones will sport honeycomb on release, or anytime soon after release. That’s being delusional. Manufacturers have taken so long to release these tegra phones, and these manufacturers are catastrophically slow with updates. I’ll be surprised frankly if they ship with gingerbread.
Good luck getting your updates on these tegra phones in a timely manner.
Tegra is unbelievably powerful, no question, but in the hands of device manufacturers I think performance will vary greatly – device manufacturers tend to throw in great hardware and then cripple it with absolutely shocking OS revisions and software optimisation.
You’re guaranteed a lot of great optimisation with the Nexus S, but not with other products.
You really only have the LG Star and Motorola Olympus to choose from if you want tegra, and they were running froyo when we last saw them. The LG Star just looks horrible as far as build quality is concerned and video demo’s show it lag, and the Olympus is a AT&T phone, so if you hate that network you’re screwed on that front.
Plus remember both with be nowhere as hackable as the Nexus S, which will see huge dev support just as the N1 before it. You’ll be lucky if these tegra phones get any decent root access. Motorola loves the efuse concept. It’s crackable but it will never have the simplicity of the Nexus S.
And lastly, who doesn’t want the phone that developers are developing their stuff on? The Nexus S is THE benchmark for all future android phone applications. You’re guaranteed that apps will run as the developer intended on the Nexus S over any other phone in the Android ecosystem.
Embrace this phone and give it a damn chance. Google deserves that much.

Amen to that ^^^^ . For a moment I thought I was the only one getting a Nexus S.

I agree in spirit. I'm just salty about the lack of any notification LED and dock contact points. I want a device with polish... the N1's docking and notifications are still unrivaled, but they could at least have put those into their device.
I'll still probably get the phone and hope that some nice docks are in the pipeline so I can sell my N1 and the docks.

I remember how pissed everyone was when Google closed the web store thinking they caved into the carriers demands and there would never be a pure android phone again.
So now that Google actually comes out with an even better phone everyone wants to complain? I could care less if its a dual core or doesn't have an SD card or wasn't as game changing as the Nexus One.
All I care about is the concept:
- Google phone with pure android
- Better specs than Nexus One
- Can be used w/ t-zones
People complaining it wasn't a game changer need to be happy there at least is an option now in case our Nexus One is lost. I know I sure am

Sure it'll be the benchmark for next 6 months i'd say but heck, neither LG Star nor Motorola Olympus is ready yet and why they were running 2.2? Because they were made before Gingerbread was even ready for the Nexus S. They were built from scratch not from an existing product. My opinion, I love my Nexus One. It was the true innovation the time it came out. Who had AMOLED screen and snapdragon processor on one phone back in June? except for HD2, nobody really did. It set the benchmark for every android device to beat until now. I'm not saying the Nexus S don't deserve the Nexus name or anything. It's just isn't worth the $529 for what it's lacking. not the dual core processor either.

The Nexus S is a fine phone. As a developer, I'll probably get one in the next six months or so. But I am annoyed by the lack of a microSD slot and LED notifications. I have a 32GB microSD in my N1 right now and have it nearly filled with music. I also have come to depend on being able to glance across the room and see my N1's trackball flashing brightly in a color that tells me just what kind of communication my phone received.
So I'm not at all a hater of the NS, but I am sad that it drops some really nifty features.

I shall be getting this phone within the next 3-4 months even after my disappointment with the lack of an SD card slot, LED, and trackball.

Ita a beautiful powerful phone.
But again I cant see why anyone would "love" it coming from N1.
Id consider it but only because Tmo seems to get cute phones instead of the big screen full featured Evos/Droid Xs of the android world.
The decision making behind the phone is just odd. People are calling it out justifiably. If this was anything but "the next google phone" its be another blip on the radar.

I'm not feeling it because there's no Micro SD card support, no LED notifications, and that crappy-feeling build quality. I HATE the Galaxy S line of phones because they feel cheap. I love how my N1 is made of real metal, and feels solid and has some heft to it.
Now, would I love a Nexus S? Sure. Would I want to dish out $529 for one to replace my awesome N1? No way in hell.

The S has some advantages over the 1. Let's all just admit that now. Wang and I are in agreement here over this point: Those advantages, to us, are minor and are not worth ditching the N1. Wang and I will be waiting to see what drops in Q1, early Q2 at the latest.
The S isn't anywhere near the "superphone" that the 1 was when it dropped. Nice? Sure. Decent specs? Sure. The N1 raised the bar SUBSTANTIALLY. The S only raises it incrementally.

1. AMEN...I just dont think alot of people understand just how invaluable this is. Its ridiculously easy to prioritize messages and hands down the easiest way to get notified. Plus for those that are hearing impaired its the only way to get differentiated notifications ((since obviously they cant do ring tones)). Evo/DroidX/MT4G/G2...do any of these phones have it ?
2. Thats all it is in a nutshell. You take the N2 give it hummingbird ,4" SAMOLED, the new form factor ,FF camera ,GB ,NFC we'd all be standing online for it.
But you add only a few things but take away some very important features to many ??

* As Schmidtty said, the N1 was meant to push the hardware platform, by using ahead-of-its'-time specs and it did. The Nexus S has nice specs to be sure, but it isn't running way ahead of the pack challenging others to catch-up like the N1 did. The Nexus S is the next "step", the N1 was a big "leap".

* Funky SD/Internal/External partitioning?
Anyway, I'll be keeping my N1 until Uncle Schmidtty comes out with the Nexus Whatever that's got multi-cores, monster GPU, a 5" screen with zillion-point multi-touch and "retina" destroying image density and 16gb /system and microSD slot for whatever I want.

I think it's logical to omit the trackpad, HTC used to say that they still have it on phones to make it easy to navigate and select text. If they already solved that ( as Google says) with the Gingerbread easy text selection and editing then the only reason to have the trackpad is to wake up the phone, at least this is the way I use it.

The loss of trackball notifications has 0 effect.
Check out backlight notifications for the Galaxy S phones.

Hey Paul since your one of the guys on Xda whose opinion I respect alot, what are your thoughts on the Nexus S? Do you plan on getting one?

push hardware platform ahead of its time???? if i am not mistaken, at the time of its release, the nexus one was the third phone released with the snapdragon. first one being toshiba g01 and then the hd2. like 2 months later , the n1 came out. so i dont think this was a revolutionary step.

I know he didn't mean it, but he should've said Android phones. I don't believe any Android phones were out with the Snapdragon at the time of the N1's release. I also don't believe there were any phones (Android phones) with AMOLED screens at the time.
The NS has it's contour display, NFC, and Google's support behind it.
But it isn't amazing. It doesn't blow anything out the water. Not much to "oooo, ahhh" about..

The only innovative thing n1 came with at that time was the amoled screen. you're right.
About android phones, the first snapdragon on android was by the Liquid a1.

Edit: Some rumours are that it will be a slide tablet, that sounds pretty cool, having a keyboard underneath that slides!

Yeah, breaching into laptop territory and I really don't need a 3rd.

I don't mind as long has dual boot, Dell has one out already, I am thinking if I can go back I would buy that instead.

But as far the slider is just a rumour, there is no concrete proof of that its going to be a slider.
It may just be a new tablet.

I would expect that the only real marketable difference between it and what we have now will be the sliding kb. It's unlikely the internals (RAM, proc, panel type etc) will be different. But, as the article states, details are scarce.
Who knows.

I'm thinking it's gonna be 2012 before we see Tegra 3 stuff with Android 4.x on it. At this point I'm gonna keep my Iconia. Pass it on to the g/f when I get Kal El and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Ya, at least 2012 since they're are already showing off dev hardware and software with T3. Of course, not that that alone means it's imminent - but it is imminent.

Unlikely if its Q4 2011 - that's Oct - Dec (Fourth Quarter calendar year) Timing is off for T3 since everything I've read touts some point in 2012.
Plus that's just too soon to build a tablet for new architecture like that. Even when T3 goes out, we probably won't see any tablets for them for another quarter - first gen tablets aside (whatever the 'launch' tablet is - which wont be Acer).

If Acer opted to go with a different architecture, the only SoC I can think of that beats the Tegra 2 is the new OMAPs. The 44xx series. I've seen a couple of phone's benchmarked and a review on a tablet and they seem to be a bit ahead. Given 500MHz clock speed advantage, I can understand why. They also have the NEON instructions for SIMD.

It would be nice if the slide out keyboard would then lock and tilt like a laptop ,and not just up and down like most slide keyboards on phones
that why I loved my tilt 1 and 2!

I can't imagine a 10" tablet having a non folding keyboard. I'm 6' tall and the tablet alone is big enough. Can you imagine a tablet that suddenly added 50% or more to it's dimensions?

Agreed. That's getting to laptop territory, as I said before.

Personally I'm hoping for a tablet with a slide out coffeemaker.

Transformer 2 to arrive in October according to Forbes

At first, I was a little mad at this, my Transformer just arrived in the mail today and the first website I went to on my new TF was engadget.com and I saw this headline.
Then, I realized that I probably won't even need a quad core tablet for another couple of years considering that there are only a handful of apps that take advantage of Tegra 2.

Yeah I went into the tablet game knowing full well it would be outdated very quickly. I judged my opinion on my purchase solely based on the streamline performance I saw from the models already available at the time, the xoom, and decided it was going to be enough power for me for a while. But deep down inside it does get to you when you see something newer come out a quarter later!

I also heard today that the price of the Asus Transformer is going to drop on the middle of this month, but they didn't give a price. A reaction to Acer Iconia dropping to $398.
I think that the new screens on the next generation of tablets will be really expensive since they will be 2048x1500 or there abouts.

There is this assumption that there really isnt any point of quad cores as Apps arent optimised for them yet.
However, honeycomb itself was designed with multicore processors in mind. Single threaded apps can take advantage of multicore processors by running the app on one core, and other OS services on the other cores.
Even the most basic of tasks can benefit like browsing and gaming.The OS itself can benefit from quad core.

They are just playing the same game as Apple, updating their product on a yearly refresh cycle.
I won't be updating from Transformer to Transformer 2. I'm very happy with my purchase, and nothing will change that. A few years down the road I may repurchase.
I only hope that Asus don't withhold Android ICS from Transformer to give the Transformer 2 a market advantage (it already has one in it's hardware spec).

I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to decide what android tablet to purchase. I have narrowed my decision between the TF and the GT10.1. I was gonna make my purchase in a week or so, but now, I dont know?! Maybe I should buy one at BB and get the buy back program for it. Damn....

I'd rather have a 3.2 update with no bugs, TBH.

I don't buy this october release date. it makes no sense to put out a new device so early when TF1 sales are rising not falling away. surely asus would want to max out sales of their existing product before launching a successor.

After October is December and Christmas;P, so this is a very good time for a new flagship product.
oh and one more thing, If Asus doesn't do this, then another company will. Kal-el is ready, so it is, a matter of time.

I can tell You that Kal-el is ready but creating a tablet with this processor is another and long story.
Oh and i cant tell Y why i know about Kal-el

I could easily see them selling both the TF and the TF 2 at the same time, just at a lower pricepoint for the TF and a higher price point for the TF 2. It might be that by the time the TF 2 comes out, component costs will have dropped on the TF and they could price it at, say, $349/$449 retail, and then the TF 2 at $449/$549.
That's just idle speculation, of course, but it makes sense to me, particularly if the specs on the TF 2 are crazy good, which I expect them to be.

IMHO Quad core on a tablet is completely and utterly USELESS. More is not always better.

Why? Wouldn't you prefer it if your browser typing had less lag, and the app your were running was not effected by other tasks such as feed updates, etc. More cores impacts both the base OS and apps.

Your Android device WILL BE outdated in 3 months, maximum 6 months no matter what you buy.
I am happy as long as I get the Ice Cream Sandwich running smoothly later this year.

This is the same thing ppl said when the tegra2 was announced. The fact is that honeycomb itself is not mature yet.
I agree with the post above saying quad core is useless. It is useless for the time being cause, while the hw techs is advancing at great speed, the software is still lagging behind. why have a quad core when clearly we do not have many tablet applications? i am not talking about the recent api changes in 3.2 so that apps can be stretched... i am talking about special apps made for tablet only. why improve the hw when there is still way to improve in the sw?
browser typing is clearly a bug in the codes. we do not need to get 4 cores to get rid of it. browser typing lag is something we shouldnt be experiencing even in a single core. quad cores coming out in october is quite outrageous especially for us ( living in europe) . i for one, paid approx 450 euros 2 weeks ago for the TF only (without the dock).

Samsung Galaxy Note DO NOT DO

Ok I have an infuse (using Inspire now until replacement comes in) and I have seen a galaxy note, read specs and seen... I don't know why so many are jumping ship... It is just a bigger screen really, already with GB... Not a true upgrade at all, just a way to get a few hundred dollars out of people.... That's why many devices wont get true updates because people will always act like the slightest change is the biggest upgrade when it isn't.... Im just saying people be smart and wait for a TRUE BLUE UPGRADE and not just an overblown phone

how is it not considered an upgrade? it has a dual core processor, and a gigabyte of memory... not to mention almost double the battery. plus all the features the S pen provides over normal touch screen. you may as well have just condemned all the current galaxy s2 devices because they arent TRUE BLUE upgrades.. wtf mate

The note is definitely an upgrade hardware wise. That being said it doesn't interest me at all because there is no way a 5.3" screen phone will fit comfortably in my pants pocket. The infuse is boarderline, most of the time it is fine but sometimes it is just annoying in my pocket.

A complete waste of an upgrade due to phones coming out with 2gb of ram and Quad Cores. Why jump the boat on Dual Core and 1gb of ram? A complete waste for those just wanting the phone for the big screen.

im waiting to see what coming form the Sgs 3 or htc leaked quad core phone before upgrading

Some of us want the bigger screen. I've gone from flip phones, to the iphone, to the Infuse all in search of the biggest screen...and the Note will be the king of the biggies for awhile. Sorry, but the Infuse is an antique in comparison. Not fitting in a pocket is the least of our concerns and no reason to create a thread to DO NOT DO. Find a better reason to bad mouth the new bad boy.

just out of curiosity, what manufacturer has announced that they will be releasing a phone with a quad core processor and 2 gigabytes of ram? I've seen a lot of user talk regarding devices with these specs, but no actual official info from manufacturers.
Just because something better will come out in the future doesn't make the current best obsolete.

That's what gets me too. Non-Samsung phones that were released before the Infuse have been confirmed as getting ICS with ETAs.
I like Samsung phones - especially their audio... but my next phone wont be one. Can't trust Samsung to keep their commitments in a timely manner.

The screen is too big. My phone is always in my pocket and that big of a phone would not be good for a person like me that does manual labor all day. Its personal preference.

I guess you don't read much do you? Samsung has already jumped the ship into making a Quad core 2gb ram phone......What is it? Samsung Galaxy S3, When can we expect it? Probably in another 3 to 4 months, those that can't wait and wanna jump the boat for a Note go right ahead, And if these specs do become official, then it's gonna make your Note look bad. They were saying the S3 would have a beast battery that would last longer than normal giving us more of a benefit for those who constantly use their phone but Hey That's you! I honestly don't see how it's not a real upgrade.
The Infuse has gotten me through without problems for most of my daily tasks. However, it does freeze up rather frequently, lags, and also has some issues now and then with stuttering and resetting itself (or just turning off).
I'm not saying the Note (or Galaxy SII) don't do those things, but I feel like they should do them less. Yeah, I know I can flash a custom ROM and all, but every time I did one, I'd always run into a bug or two that would make me go back to stock (despite the awesome benefits).
Just because people are "jumping ship" to the Note does not mean those people simply want the latest and greatest. Most, if not virtually all, people on here seem to understand that technology moves rapidly and their product is going to be outdated by the next best thing right around the corner. We all know the SIII will be making its debut soon, and we all know it will be better than the current lineup super-phones. That doesn't mean going from the Infuse to the Note will be any less beneficial, because the Note is still a better phone than the Infuse (unless you really hate the size... but then it's like, well you have the SII or the Skyrocket, so no real point there, in my opinion).

Hey man, no reason to be rude about it. I was asking for an official document that states quad core, 2 GB phones are "right around the corner" as you are implying.
I would be inclined to agree, when the next galaxy s device is released it should blow all current devices out of the water. It is after all the successor; it better rock. but again, the specs you quoted are still rumors and the device has no ETA. So you're basically telling people not to get the current Corvette just because the next one will be better.
For the record, I don't have a note. Not getting one either, but you're argument doesn't really hold water since its based solely on rumor and speculation or user expectation. Not official manufacturer released hardware specs.
No reason to try and make people feel stupid for buying one of the best devices available AT THIS TIME.

One thing though to be carful of is that they changed the specs some for the americcan one.

Honestly with the current cell phone technology , you'll be forever waiting because there will always be a newer and better phone that's 3-4 months away from being released.
I say, get what you like now. If it has the specs, look, feel, and size you like, get it. Then if 3-4 months later quad core phones come out, sell your current phone and get the new one. Simple as that!

I'm not a latest and greatest kind of guy I like my infuse and probably won't upgrade for a while. I trust dman when he says the note is a beast and i can appreciate playing with new toys, but I don't get what the big deal is with the S Pen.
My wife bought a case for her kindle fire that came with a pen and it works on my infuse, so... /shrug I'm just not too excited about a stylus i guess...

People drooling over quad core phones are just spec hungry. The only advantage may be battery life, but that's a big maybe. More cores draw more power, but do handle heavy multitasking and gaming with better battery life. Seeing as most Android apps don't even take advantage of two core, why the hell are four necessary. By the time apps that utilize four cores are widespread, there will be a whole new generation of devices that are better than the GS3.
Yes, 2 GB of RAM will make the phones buttery smooth and apps launch instantaneously, but here is already barely any lag on my infuse running CM7, and our phones are single cores with less than a gig of RAM.
Until a majority of apps utilize the advantages of quad core processors, buying a phone with four cores is basically like having a 10 inch ****. You may seem impressive to all other guys, but it's not exactly necessary for a majority of sexual encounters. Haha.
Not to mention, unless you plan on buying the international version of the GS3, we won't see it here in the US until the end of the year most likely. Happy waiting to you!

The S Pen is a wacom stylus...way better than the capacitive stylus that came with her fire. Much more accurate, and allows for a lot more functionality. With the button on the S Pen, you have additional features and gestures that make using a stylus actually productive. Capacitive stylii are basically little fingertips. Look at some of the art being produced on a Note, and you will never be able to match that kind of detail with your fingers or a capacitive stylus. This accuracy allows you to actually write legibly.

Unnecessary thread. You know everyone has there own opinions. So why argue. If people want the note, then leave them alone.

Hey guys, just wondering if i should wait for the next generation of the Nexus 10 tablet or just buy this one. And any estimate on when the next one will be out? Because i can wait if necessary

There were rumors of the next gen, but then those rumors died down. I personally think the next gen wont be out till end of 2013

We know that the Nexus 7 is getting a new model this summer, no info yet as to the Nexus 10 but I doubt it will get an upgrade this quickly, the tablet only came out 5 months ago. I think the rumors were it would get an upgrade to the Exynos Octo processor, but those rumors were months ago and I doubt they had much truth to begin with. Either way it seems like if that ever was the plan, it isnt going to happen anymore
We may find out more info on the new N7 model, a possible N10 model, and probably the next Android version next month at Google IO

Alright thanks for the replies, so i have an oppertunity to buy a nexus 10 for $400 from a local guy, should i take it? How is the dual core processor compared to a quad? Thats one of the things i was concerned about, and how long do you think this nexus 10 will be good for? (Futureproof)

There are a lot of synthetic benchmarks around showing performance. The general consensus is that the processor is pretty darn good for the current gen. I'm sure there will be lots of releases in 2013 that will blow it out of the water. So future proof is a very hard thing to gauge. You might say that with the meteoric rise of ARM chips that you simply can't get a future proof mobile device at all.
In the real world I have found the power under the hood in the nexus to be great. I have no trouble watching full HD video and gaming is good too. Probably the final word on future proof from a mobile device is going Nexus. You wont spend ages sitting around waiting for OS updates and carrier updates and manufacturer updates.

Alright and do you think its a good deal for $390? And hows battery life? Any roms to make the batter life better? Also if anyone knows, how much does it effect the electricity bill, probably less than a couple dollars a month right?

The amount of cores don't matter as much as the actual speed of those cores. When comparing the Exynos 5 Dual chip in the N10 against the Tegra 3 Quad-core chip in the N7, the Exynos 5 destroys it. The Exynos 5 is also a newer CPU architecture (A15) as well, and currently, there's either very few other devices, or none at all publicly available that have such a chip.
The N10 should go a good while (longer than the current N7 and N4) with how well it can run later Android versions, just due to the specs alone. Also this tablet was (may still be) the best device supported on AOSP (I think all hardware is open-source aside from 1 thing), which is nice for custom ROM's and Kernels.
Battery life is decent. It mainly depends on how you plan on using it though, but I didn't really have any complaints about mine.

So should i buy it for $390? And how can i get free books on it? Thanks a lot guys

If its in new condition I would buy it. I'm guessing its the 16gb version? Just make sure everything is working properly. It would also help if it came with a purchase receipt.
