I'm curious as to what other potential buyers here on XDA plan to do with the Xoom and why they want it. Maybe we can discover new uses through other people?
HD recording and playback will be awesome. I've never owned a webcam, so the Xoom's cam on the front will be fun. I'm very excited for Honeycomb itself, the revamped apps should be really cool! Besides all that, I really like the Xoom's exterior and formfactor compared to some other tablets. The Notion Ink Adam has similar specs, but I simply don't like how it looks. Also, the imposed UI doesn't appeal to me personality.
As far as usage, being a musician, I want to put in all my sheet music/real books to have with me on the gig and for personal practice. Having to print off sheet music and also having to lug everything around isn't very convenient. With the Xoom, I'll have lots of music accessible with just a few clicks! Also, I've gotten quite a few eBooks recently that will be more comfortably read on the Xoom rather than my laptop or my tiny Eris (3.2" screen!)
Ok, I thought this was going to be more about "why Xoom and not another tablet", but reading your post, it sounds more like "what will you do with a tablet". Anyway, why I like the Xoom over other Andro-tablets is the stock Android Honeycomb experience paired with usually reliable Moto hardware. Other tablets are making waves and could steal my vote though, such as the upcoming Toshiba and HTC ones... All high end tablets are likely to feature Android 3.0, dual-core processors, 1Gb RAM, two cameras, 720p recording/1080p playback, HDMI and USB ports, and the usual WiFi and Bluetooth, so the price (and availability in Canada, for me!) will play a big part.

I edited my first post adequately, thanks! I should have reworded the title.
Yeah, I am curious to see what HTC will come up with, though I really want a tablet now! Motorola has been reliable and blur won't be integrated in, so it should be a great device. However, if the Xoom's pricing is too high I'll probably just wait for a wifi-only device. By that time, there will probably be more info from HTC since leaks from them are common.
Hopefully it'll be available in Canada for you!
will regular android applications work on honeycomb? my main requirement is to use medical programs on android and it s currently running on my fascinate/galaxy tab/ipad.

From what I know, If they work on your Galaxy Tab they'll work on the Xoom. As you're probably aware of, some apps aren't coded to run on a screen size bigger than a phones, so like in your Tab, they will have be scaled. Honeycomb might compensate somehow though!
As Honeycomb begins to settle, more and more developers will begin to adjust their apps to at least scale to the Xoom's size if not make full use it's screen res.

And HTC should work on faster OS updates. I'm sticking with the Xoom unless it's too pricey...but even then I'll wait until I can afford it/prices lower! I hope the bootloader isn't locked...
I want it because I actually don't think it's too pricey (assuming 700 is what we're looking at). I'm in the market for a laptop replacement, and with an Android phone and a newly built desktop at home, I just don't need a full blown laptop replacement, especially if I can just remote into my desktop on said tablet. The (likely) dealbreaker for me is a locked bootloader. Has anyone seen any information on the bootloader?

Thanks, ma42091, for the input. The xoom will be an awesome tablet. Motorola has really step up in terms of top notch specs and design. The competion is really challenging htc and th they have a rumor tablet coming too.

It's not too much from what a high-end smartphone costs off-contract now in reality. Though, for a poor college student...
As far as the bootloader, there's no info yet. This is Motorola's latest statement:
We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users' interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability.

You're welcome. I agree, Motorola has set high standards. Info on one of HTC's tablets is out already: Leak: Topaz Specs (Gizmodo)
The Xoom still looks better!
The Topaz is not an HTC tablet, its an HP WebOS one.
Edit: And now that I hink about it, I honestly do not believe Motorola set the bar high. There are several other tablets running stock Android 3.0 with Tegra 2 processors that are "promised" to be released this year. The few things that seperates this tablet from the others is it being on Verizon, and it being Google's lead Honeycomb device. Heck, in terms of specifications that yet-to-be named Toshiba tablet is already equal to or better than the Xoom, not including the Barometer. The Xoom is not at all a hard device to beat. Especially not in design (my favorite area).
I truly believe the only reason this will be so big is because of Verizon's power. Some say that they made Android what it is today because of the Droid line. With Verizon behind it this tablet will be successful. A very good competitor to the iPad.
Actually the Toshiba tab has only been said to be a tegra 2 processor, they havent given the full specs yet. Also you have to worry about updates, the 1st Droid on vzw because of stock android got all the Google updates before most devices on the market except the nexus. I'm pretty sure this pad will be getting updates long before any other pads out there

Most if not all of the specs for the Toshiba Tab have been released on it's website: www.thetoshibatablet.com. And yes, I did take the update situation into consideration with my previous post. Hence the "because it is Google's lead device.."
Seems like a nice pad but I couldn't figure out how much memory it comes with? I plan on using about 25gbs just for music, I never plan on hooking this (or my sd card)to my desktop for music again. Also I don't see myself ever buying a Toshiba product, I would prefer LG slate over this but that's just me. If this pad has 32gb on board memory the only reason it will be cheaper is because of no 3g an obviously its Toshiba. Another thing don't drop it, it's not made with the gorilla glass so bumps and drops can crack the screen easily
Sent from my Evo using Tapatalk
I have T-Mobile so I actually did take the LG-G Slate into consideration, but with an 8.9" screen I said never mind. Also, I'm sure Toshiba's tab will be "decent". Judging from photos, and small previews, people seem ok with the device so far.
Galaxy Tab running Honeycomb with a Super AMOLED display and LTE radio is my dream tablet. The Xoom and all the new tabs look amazing but after extensive use of the Galaxy Tab and the iPad in various situations, I find the iPad and soon to be Xoom sized tabs to be just slighty cumbersome on the whole. Though let me reitterate the 'on the whole' part because there certainly were circumstances where the extra real estate of the 10 inch tab was definately prefered. Anyone else have a similar or differing experience?

Argh, don't know why I thought it was HTC!
I had not seen specs for the Toshiba tablet until this morning. Looks pretty good. Looking at that, It does make the Xoom look like it's not hard to beat. As you said, the Xoom will be successful because it's the first Honeycomb tablet and it'll be under Verizon. Motorola has hinted at a Wifi-only and different sizes (7" variant?) as well, which will help later on in the year.
However, there's always something coming that's better with mobile devices. I want a tablet now, the Xoom is what I'm going to get!
Besides, even if it does become overshadowed by over tablets this year, I won't mind--I'm still rockin' a HTC Droid Eris proudly!

Well getting tired of your Transformer's odd lag maybe you need the next version.
5x Tegra 2 performance...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/asus-planning-quad-core-tegra-3-and-intel-based-tablets/
Hope they still have someone working on ours
That'll be nice.
The ultimate tablet would be very fast, snappy, multitask like a champ and play any video you throw at it.
This market moves so fast most shipping devices get left behind.
Wonder what a used Transformer will sell for when the new ones ship?
If it is anything like the Transformer then count me in.
same, I'll hand this one to the misses.
Does the current transformer really lag a lot after putting it through a lot of multitasking? If so, maybe I'll wait for the quadcore one.. I just don't feel like waiting till Oct. lol.

Asus has said the Transformer will be a line of tablets, and the keyboard dock should be compatible with future tablets.
Winning strategy in my book.
But I just got mine DAMIT!!!!! Not even a week old
I guess I'll be shelling out more money at the end of year. If you look at their road map for the Tegra chip there is one slated from every year until 2014.

Mind that the Tegra II is a 2010 product... but it's really taking until this year to get good products that have it under the hood.
I'd expect late LATE 2011 before the Tegra III is in tablets, if not early 2012.
And think about it, your Transformer is a great tablet. It will still be working great at the start of 2012!

Yeah I know. I had the Viewsonic G-Tab back in Dec. The first Tegra 2 tablet but I returned them (wife and mine) to staples b/c the screen was super crap and it ran froyo with all the mobile phone components still under the hood.
As long as we have developers to continue giving us the latest software from Google or Asus continues supporting it, I'm cool with the current model for the next year or so.
Thunderbolt Rooted!
Realistically, i think we will be seeing a Tegra 3 tablet this holiday season or somewhere after CES in 2012
If you look at Nvidias release schedule, they plan on releasing a new tegra processor every year, i wont be getting a new tablet every year thats for sure
I am not really that interesting in the quad core factor of the Tegra 3, mostly the increased GPU cores and the inclusion of the NEON instruction set for ARM which really increases performance, it was stupid of them to not include it in Tegra 2
I love how the chart shows "Tegra 2 - 2010" while the modell is not even avaible at half 2011
Tegra 3 - 2012 would be more realistic

The Viewsonic G Tablet and Malata tablets were out in November of 2010 with a Tegra 2.
^ That.
Plus the Transformer was the first Asus tablet (in the modern sense of the word), they needed time for R&D, etc; I think the fact it's on a Tegra II is a result of nothing better being available earlier this year.
I'm sure once the T3s comes out, they will be much faster to market.
(Don't get me wrong, the Tegra 2 is excellent.)
If Asus releases a Tegra 3 tablet this summer, it will probably be more then $400
My guess around $600
Because it would be stupid to release a new low cost tablet when they just released one in the spring....

You bought the wrong tablet silly head!
Like others have mentioned, if we see a shipping Tegra 3 tablet before Xmas I'd be floored. Granted the Transformer got most of the R&D out of the way and the tablet intricacies should be mostly ironed out now, I just can't see Asus releasing an updated version within 3 months of their initial tablet release.
http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwoyke/2011/07/29/asus-preparing-second-transformer-tablet/
At first, I was a little mad at this, my Transformer just arrived in the mail today and the first website I went to on my new TF was engadget.com and I saw this headline.
Then, I realized that I probably won't even need a quad core tablet for another couple of years considering that there are only a handful of apps that take advantage of Tegra 2.
Yeah I went into the tablet game knowing full well it would be outdated very quickly. I judged my opinion on my purchase solely based on the streamline performance I saw from the models already available at the time, the xoom, and decided it was going to be enough power for me for a while. But deep down inside it does get to you when you see something newer come out a quarter later!
I also heard today that the price of the Asus Transformer is going to drop on the middle of this month, but they didn't give a price. A reaction to Acer Iconia dropping to $398.
I think that the new screens on the next generation of tablets will be really expensive since they will be 2048x1500 or there abouts.

more silly performances...
There is this assumption that there really isnt any point of quad cores as Apps arent optimised for them yet.
However, honeycomb itself was designed with multicore processors in mind. Single threaded apps can take advantage of multicore processors by running the app on one core, and other OS services on the other cores.
Even the most basic of tasks can benefit like browsing and gaming. The OS itself can benefit from quad core.

They are just playing the same game as Apple, updating their product on a yearly refresh cycle.
I won't be updating from Transformer to Transformer 2. I'm very happy with my purchase, and nothing will change that. A few years down the road I may repurchase.
I only hope that Asus don't withhold Android ICS from Transformer to give the Transformer 2 a market advantage (it already has one in it's hardware spec).

I don't buy this october release date. it makes no sense to put out a new device so early when TF1 sales are rising not falling away. surely asus would want to max out sales of their existing product before launching a successor.

Greets
I could easily see them selling both the TF and the TF 2 at the same time, just at a lower pricepoint for the TF and a higher price point for the TF 2. It might be that by the time the TF 2 comes out, component costs will have dropped on the TF and they could price it at, say, $349/$449 retail, and then the TF 2 at $449/$549.
That's just idle speculation, of course, but it makes sense to me, particularly if the specs on the TF 2 are crazy good, which I expect them to be.

Why? Wouldn't you prefer it if your browser typing had less lag, and the app your were running was not effected by other tasks such as feed updates, etc. More cores impacts both the base OS and apps.
Your Android device WILL BE outdated in 3 months, maximum 6 months no matter what you buy.
I am happy as long as I get the Ice Cream Sandwich running smoothly later this year.

This is the same thing ppl said when the tegra2 was announced. The fact is that honeycomb itself is not mature yet.
I agree with the post above saying quad core is useless. It is useless for the time being cause, while the hw techs is advancing at great speed, the software is still lagging behind. why have a quad core when clearly we do not have many tablet applications? i am not talking about the recent api changes in 3.2 so that apps can be stretched... i am talking about special apps made for tablet only. why improve the hw when there is still way to improve in the sw?
browser typing is clearly a bug in the codes. we do not need to get 4 cores to get rid of it. browser typing lag is something we shouldnt be experiencing even in a single core. quad cores coming out in october is quite outrageous especially for us ( living in europe) . i for one, paid approx 450 euros 2 weeks ago for the TF only (without the dock).
Compatible with existing docks and will have ICS.

well isnt that just great. Ive had mine for one day. A quad core? Damn!
this is all well and good but im still gonna keep my tf1 with a smile. im sure ICS will be on the tf1 shortly after its available. not worried
Ditto - I can't see quad core being necessary for some time to come. I'll upgrade next year.... when it's six or 8 core for the same price

how was the build quality of the first gen compared to samsung products?
I can say the TF3 will be out in June of 2012 too, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. This is the beginning of media hype. The same thing happened with the original Transformer as well. How many months was it until we had a concrete date, much less hardware in hand? For god sakes, they were showing off hardware 3+ months before it hit stores! Having the CEO say they're preparing, is like me saying I'm preparing for Christmas now.
When we have a date, fine, post threads. But until we have a date, whats the point of having thread, after thread, after thread with every little stupid article about the TF2? It's all hype and nothing more.

It was sorta a crapshoot. In a way...I mean, as you probably are well aware, the people that got bad units (or are just too picky when it comes to backlight bleed) complained the loudest. When you consider the fact that they were selling 100k+ per month, having even 100 people complaining is still only 0.1%. Outside of that, I feel it's good. I have a B50 unit (not one of the even older B40 units) and it's build really solid, I can't complain unless I expect everything to be better than perfect.

If you can find a B60 or below tab I'd go for it. B70 series are hit and miss when it comes to being able to root. Even if you NEVER root it, it's good to have the option IMO.
Quad-core? Not necessary for functioning apps at present. The dual-core TF1 performs beautifully. "Less is More" axiom applies here I believe.
I'd jump to the quad-core ONLY if dual boot with Win8 were an option. Never been a gamer so playing games mean diddly to me. (Win8 option would help with work interface).
Its not going to be thinner? Different Color? More aesthetically pleasing w/ a new dock to match? Only hardware is the difference?
I am dissapoint. I was really hoping that they would have created a more badass version of the TF2. They might as well just called it the TF1S and saved the TF2 monicker for the real deal.
I honestly think Asus, like Lenovo, are going to be in the Tablet races a long time. However, I think the tablets running Android will be short lived. I want a fully featured, robust, heavily developed OS. Windows 8 is just that. If anyone is not excited about Windows 8 competing with Android, then they are not excited for any innovation.
The Transformer 2 will most likely run Windows 8.

Windows 8 should be able to run on Tegra 2 so we should have the dual boot capability on the TF1.

It won't. It will run IceCream Sandwhich. - If there is one thing I've learned it is to take all posts with a grain of salt. Usually it's peoples' personal opinions or prefrences instead of facts.

If it doesn't have digitizer stylus I'll pass. I need the tablet for taking hadwritten notes at work, Transformer 1 is not good for it.
multiple places are reporting that the CEO of Asus has stated that transformer 2 will be coming out shortly (meaning by the end of the month or early next month).

however, the price point says $499...hopefully they are referring to the 32GB model and not the 16GB model. I was really hoping to get this as soon as it came out but if 16GB is at $499..i might wait until closer towards the end of the year to hopefully get a better deal on it once samsung and others come out with their kal-el models.
I am wondering if hardware companies will have less incentive of making 10" Android tablets now that Google is making their own? Does that mean we won't see an Asus Transformer v4 in the future, for example?

If anything Id expect 3rd party people to step up their game and not make anymore ****ty spec'ed tablets. Its time to move to the newest hardware.

Yeah I agree, we may not see alot of tablets comign out with the screen res that the n10 has i'd expect alot of tablet with the 1920x1080 screen in the transformer infinity. I think most makers will wait for the tegra 4 processor to come out before we see anything substantial being released, I'd say the N10 will be the master of the domain for at least 6 months.
well i beleive we will see new processors ,the tegra 3 is obvious a medium choice for tablets cpu.
i believe we will see tablets with s4 pro ,exynos cpu and 2gb ram as untill now 1 gb is standard ,for resolution i believe may devs will own a nexus 10 so many apps will go up to nexus 10 resolution in the near future and so new tablets will have the same as nexus 10.
the only thing that i find a little disturbing on nexus is the missing sd slot so new tabs may have a future over nexus 10 ...

This will definitely put some serious price pressure on the 10-inchers. It's pretty well known that the BOM on the Samsung Note 10.1 is $260, and they have been selling it for $200 over cost. So now the N10 comes out, and the 16gb model has to be sold pretty near cost -- you can compare features and prices with the iPad BOM, and the total has to be pretty close to the msrp. My point is that, as with the N7, Google is shaving margins pretty thin, and competitors will have to follow suit -- even mighty Apple

It looks like March will be a big month for tablet fans. The Samsung Galaxy S4, with Exynos 5450, is expected. Surely it would be easier to drop that SoC on a tablet, N10-derived or not, as they already have the experience with the 5250, so I would expect tablets to arrive around the same time. T40 is scheduled for Q1 as well, so we may see some interesting head-to-head competition CES, in two months, will shed a lot of light on what to expect in Q1 2013.

Pretty sure the new Note tablet will be built on the experiences of the old and the Nexus 10.
A 12" 2600k tab with Exynos 5450, 8-core Mali T604 and S-Pen magic, if you can wait 6 months and get an additional $100, you'll be in for a treat. (the 10+" screen is wishful thinking, but isn't that the Samsung way? The next big thing).
Ehh, apple won't have to budge the slightest. Let's all be honest here, as much as we hate them, apple (sadly) appeals to a larger crowd. It has that name brand value. No matter what they put out there, lots of people will buy it.

They will always have a large flock of sheep, but it won't be a larger crowd for long. There is going to be a lag between the growth of Android tablets shipped and the growth of quality apps -- as developers are drawn to the platform and have to train up -- but as Android users takes the biggest slice of the market, the maturity of both hardware and software development will improve.
Apple's problem is attracting new customers; they may be selling more tablets, but many are to existing users.

As much as I crave the N10, I feel I'll be happier in the long-term waiting for the next big thing. Besides, I think my budget Lenovo A2109 is a great tab. My guess is that it compares poorly even in performance, but I just bought it a couple months ago, so I can bask in the upgrade for a while longer .

So, going 16:9 on the iPhone isn't budging? The very existence of the iPad mini?
