Hello everyone, I want to buy a Nexus 4. Right now, I am using the Galaxy S i9000. My questions are:
- How's the phone in terms of speed? (in comparison to your other/older phones)
- Does it still heat up?
- How's gaming? (if you do play games on it)
- How's the battery life? (please mention if you're on custom or stock roms)
Thank you
Blazing fast phone, only the newer high end phones are faster than this.
I dont do a lot of gaming so I cant say but Ive never had overheating issues.
The battery life is quite good and I think its only because of a few people mentioning the battery that it has become a big topic for this phone.
It would have been so much easier to read through one of the bazillion other 'what's this phone like' threads but anyway:
-Easily the fastest phone I've ever used
-Mine gets hotter than I expect but nothing more than my old HD2
-Gaming is great, sometimes apps aren't perfectly optimised so they won't seem as fast as on the iPhone 5 but other than that you'll struggle to find a device that beats the N4. In addition, the expanded desktop mode found in many custom ROMs really adds to the experience.
-Battery life is quite good for me, I can regularly get through a day.

Speed: This is the fastest phone I have ever used. Period.
Does it heat up: If you're charging the phone and doing heavy gaming, yes it'll heat up. Under normal usage however, my phone remains completely cool.
Gaming: Haven't found a single game this thing can't run.
Battery life: Easily makes it through a day. Typically see 4-5 hours of screen-time depending on whether or not I have WiFi access (WiFi gives more battery life, 3G uses battery a bit more).
Best phone I've ever owned! With that said, the n4 is not for everyone. I'm a minimalist at heart so I prefer vanilla. Hardware wise, yeah, no phone can compete with the n4 at its price point...
The phone does heat up a bit, I under volt to help deal with this issue. It doesn't bother me that much even though it has gotten really hot a couple of times.
I don't game much with my n4 though so I wouldn't know about how it handles them.
Battery life is actually pretty good. As long as you are realistic with expectations the battery life is pretty darn good. I can get 10+ hours of moderate-heavy use, 3+ hrs sot and the rest of the time I'm playing music over vanilla music player and doing what it is that I do on a day to day basis with my phone(texting, emails, xda).
All in all, a great all around phone!

butter fast stock
heat, you will feel heat because of glass back; but not an issue for cpu, cpu can handle that heat. if its uncomfortable you can go custom kernel like franco, or even UV.
great screen for gaming
battery life is great for me on 4.2.2, but ymmv
Phone is amazingly fast. I come from a 2+ year old smartphone that was single core and only had 512mb of ram (HTC vision or G2). In today's standards that is very slow. It would just always lag. It would take like 10 seconds to open an app and then face lag every where on the app. One time it took me five minutes to open the dialer. On the nexus 4 apps open almost instantly.
Let's not forget that this phone is eye candy. It's a very nice looking phone.
First few charges the battery life will be sluggish. After that I easily get about 20 hours of battery life.

Love the device.
Oh, owners may think it gets really hot because the way the back glass disperses the heat but in reality, doesn't run much hotter than any other high end phone. Just feels like it.
[NEXUSâ´] [CARBON1.6] [MATR1X8] [TWRP]
Thanks to everyone who replied. Now, I'm quite assured that this will be the phone for me. I'll leave the poll and the thread open for anyone who wants to add his/her opinion, until i buy the N4.

Speed: No lags at all whatsoever, even when underclocked heavily to 1.3GHz, or even 1GHz from the stock 1.5
Heat: It doesn't heat up that much at all in anything I do, partly due to the undervolting I have done on [Trinity 113b] Kernel
Gaming: I don't play heavy hardcore games like Need for Speed, but I do play casual games and no lag at all on any of those.
Battery: I am very pleased with the performance on battery. With custom ROM and kernel, this is my daily screen on time and routine with wifi
Notice even with close to 6 hours of screen on time I still have a whopping 33% of battery life.

Personally went from a 3 year old i9000, which has served me well over the years and gone through many custom ROMS, to a Nexus 4, and I'm very happy with it.
If you're not a custom ROM kind of guy and like the stock Samsung software you might be better served by an S3. It has a better camera and battery life.
Personally I chose the Nexus 4 instead because it is blazing fast and has brilliant support from custom ROM developers (I'd rather have the latest version of Android over Samsung's version), and I like the way it looks.
In terms of speed and gaming you will find it an incredible improvement over your S1, as I did. It just does not lag - it's blazing fast, responsive and smooth.
Put it in a case because I do not think it will cope with drops as well as the S1 did.
i9000 is notorious for bad GPS so you will probably be happier when you're using it for Navigation too.
Audio output is weaker compared to an i9000 with Voodoo sound but still ok, some custom kernels/apps can boost that.
Haven't had heat issues. Battery life isn't the best but is much better than my S1 was. At the end of my work day my S1 was around 55-65% but my N4 is at 75-80%.

- It's very fast
- with franco kernel + uv settings i don't have any problems, not even at gaming, with stock kernel it heats up much.
- just played Real Racing 3 today without any problems, really smooth. (without heating up the device)
- battery life is ok

Thanks, I'm glad to find somebody who had an S1. Talking about dropping the phone, I bought a cover for my S after it fell and broke the back cover  . I'm definitely getting a cover for my N4.

Currently own a SGS2 and its an amazing phone except for a few key problems...
-battery barely gets me through the day and if it does its because i didnt use it
-gps is still prety off
Those are 2 very important things constantly buggin me. I have had the atrix before and it was pretty good for the most part even before the bootloader was unlocked.
The atrix accessories, unlocked bootloader and battery life are whats pulling me back in.
My main question is, have there been improvements made to webtop to speed it up a bit? I know there are a few threads in the dev section but whats everyones personal opinion?
please keep in mind i realize there are comparisons around however, i trust the heads in these forums more than anything.
any help is appreciated-I can still get a very good price for my sgs2 and im definitely tempted.

That's wild with the GPS, because I just threw GB 2.3.3 on my OG SGS and it's probably the best readings that I've seen on an Android phone. (even better than the Atrix)
It's kinda funny because Samsung is using a new internal GPS software called "Angry GPS".
Anywhoo... I'm back on the fence with the Atrix. I have the Bell version, but my Atrix tends to get warmer than my SGS.
Also I HATE Qhd! I've increased my density settings from 240 to 260, but now the phone won't let me use the default dialer or fingerprint reader because of that. Plus it still doesn't look as crisp and clean as a native "480 x 800" Android phone.
Here's a noob question for anyone reading this - Why can't Android allow users to customize their "display resolution" like a PC?
I know MS vs Linux, but still Android wants to "perform" like a PC why can't we customize our displays without losing features on our phones.
Personally I'd like to have "480 x 800 pixels" on ALL my future Android devices, and if people want to crank up the resolution for gaming more power to them.
This and this alone is one of my biggest reasons why I still own and use my SGS a lot, and my Atrix on and off...
I won't comment on webtop..because I rarely use mine, but I can comment on battery life. I'm running the Bell Atrix, and since unlocking BL and upgrading to 2.3.4, I found my battery life drop significantly. I went from 16+ hours with 3-4hrs of display time down to half of that..no matter which ROM i tried. From what i've gathered from posts..there seems to be something in the alarms/timers that is running in the background draining the battery.
I did notice an improved battery life when I used Alien ROM #3 with faux123's second International kernel however..but jumped on the CM7 pre-beta ROM before significantly testing it. Since getting on CM7 my battery life has been crazy good...although it currently doesn't support webtop, fingerprint scanner and a few other minor bugs (camera etc).
I realize everyone gets different results..i'm just posting to let you know as a Bell user my battery life got worse initially..On a plus note however..there is finally an app that takes advantage of the fingerprint scanner (other than just for unlock)..allowing you to use it to log into certain applications..like FB or email or Galleries..which is cool if you want to keep prying eyes away from certain things lol. It's not without a few bugs however..but it's getting there
I will say, the uniqueness of the Atrix..with the fingerprint scanner, webtop mode, etc has kept me from jumping on the SGSII bandwagon..and i'm still really enjoying this phone.
I am the type of person to lay in bed and surf the net. Im thinking the lapdock is perfect for that. Webtop wasnt the fastest before the GB update so im hoping that it has improved slightly with the update. Anyone here regularly use the webtop features?

I own the laptop dock. It's not as fast as I would like it to be, but it can definitely surf the internet with ease. I also use mine as an rdp client for my desktop, which runs perfect.

PIm running 2.3.4 rooted w/ locked bootloader and im getting GREAT battery life.. after I did the following:
*downloaded battery calibration app, charge to 100% and wait till it reads 4200 mv, then calibrate.
*downloaded AntTek app manager from market (a free rom that let's you freeze bloatware without having to pay for the pro version like Titanium Backup) and I froze a huge list of blur bloatware.
* downloaded SetPcu and configured a profile to underclock the phone while the screen is off ( set the minimum and maximum to 216000 ).
*make sure my gps is turned off when im not using it
*download Advanced Task Killer from the market and set it to automatically kill idle apps upon screen shut off. I set it so my task killer icon is on the top bar of my screen, so I can easily access it and quickly clear up any useless running apps. ( i've noticed that since upgrading to 2.3.4, some apps tend to start up on their own without any distinct or reasonable trigger, so this step has really worked wonders for me.
*After this, charge to 100% and flash the battery jumping fix zip found in the dev section, and you're set to have phenomenal battery life.
On a side note, I think once cm7 is officially released, you'll see even better battery life due to the removal of Blur.
And there's my two cents on battery life. Hope it helps

I think the highest OC kernel we have atm is 1.2 (kholk's)..and from what i've heard/read the highest possible would be 1.4? Don't know for sure..just re-iterating what i've read.
Most of the stable OC kernels right now are only on a 1.1 OC..so not sure if this has improved webtop or not..
thank you for the help. I would press the thank you button but im using the old version of this website at work and there is no thank you
I have played with the SGS2 and it's a really nice phone, (huge but nice), but I love my Atrix because it allowed me to leave my heavy laptop at home.
I've been hacking the Webtop like there's no tomorrow and even unhacked, I didn't notice lags or the UI (both webtop or Android) been slow.
Obviously its not intended to replace your gaming laptop or win 3D Benchmarks by any chance, but I can say that it outperforms my daugthers Windows 7/Ubuntu Atom Netbook by a mile. Just hook up the phone and boom! You're there. (Noiseless if it wasn't enough).
These are just a few of the things I do with my Atrix/Lapdock and modded Webtop setup:
1. Work on client's websites editing and adding stuff. (Bluefish)
2. FTP in on client's and own servers. (Filezilla)
3. Edit and create photos with Photoshop quality tools (GIMP)
4. Create, read and edit Word, Powerpoint, Excell files (OpenOffice, soon LibreOffice)
5. Do lots of online research with a full blown browser (Firefox)
6. Desktop quality Social Networking.
7. Play High Quality games with nVidia graphics and QHD display.
8. Display family/work photos and HD videos on the Lapdock display or LCD/Plasma HD displays via HDMI cable (expensive cable included btw)
9. Much more...
I know that the average Joe will not be able to accomplish the above out of the box, and that fact alone could kill the concept, but I'm talking about my own experience.
Another fact to consider is price. Nowadays you can get an Atrix plus Lapdock for the price of the SGS2 alone.
Cheers and good luck on your decision, which by the way, no matter what you decide to do, it will be the best option for you.

Even though I love my Atrix, I believe the SGSII is an all around better phone. Battery life is a huge selling point for me, and my Atrix simply does not deliver. It doesn't matter what ROM, kernel, or juice defender app I use. It's just not acceptable.
Webtop is fun to show off to people, but to get full use out of it, I would have to buy a bluetooth keyboard + mouse just for the Atrix, which I can't justify.
If I have the opportunity to sell my Atrix and pick up a SGS2, I will.
I forgot to mention that for those having dialer issues after changing density settings, you just have to install Go Contacts from the Market (free) to get around the problem.
Also, high resolution displays are not for everyone. Specially in screens smaller than 4.5 inches. One has to have good eyesight for that lol...
On my workplace I have several users with high end 27+ inches lcd displays on their desktops ruining at 1024x768 (low res for that size) because of their poor eyesight lol...

You have to consider price, the Atrix + Lapdock its less expensive than an SGS2 alone.
Atrix battery has been great for me too...
Sgs2 battery is tiny in comparison to the one on the Atrix.. I'm talking about mAh obviously...
the atrix that i had could last me easily 2 days with moderate use. I have just sold the samsung for 650 and am purchasing an atrix + lapdock + multimedia dock for $500. Sounds like a deal to me.
Honestly, no matter how good a phone is, if the battery doesnt last very long its useless. Also, the atrix charges about 5 times faster.
also, i personally find 4.3 much too large to comfortably use on a daily basis. 4" is the sweet spot. I will be taking a hit in the camera department, ONLY night time shots though. In good light the atrix can hold its own. Im also an accessories guy. I think thats one of the reasons the iphone does soo well-ecosystem.
1 gb of ram like the sgs2, nvidia support for games (though the sgs2 processor is brilliant) and much louder earpiece volume and speaker.
I dont know about anyone else, but i actually enjoy webtop. I find the lapdock the perfect size and speed for night time browsing in bed and taking it on the go.

Cool story. I made my own decision, isn't that strange?
If youre going to act like a little ***** stay out of the thread. That strange?
Wow, just been setting up sgs2 for a mate, his sgs2 is stock, I haven't used it for a few months and always found it to be lightning fast. However, my Sgs on jw4 and semaphore 274 clocked at 1.2 ghz, appeared no slower at all than the Sgs 2 with general usage. I was using it for at least 30 mins. In fact, my Sgs seemed a bit slicker, the screen is more sensitive, colors more vibrant, this is all down to wicked dev's. So maybe life in the old dog yet

You can't differentiate the performance of both device by general use.
Lets say the SGS has 1000BHP engine while the SGS2 has 2400BHP engine....
And general usage only requires 200BHP. In this scenario there will be no differences in performance because the extra horses haven't been utilised.
Therefore, you'd only see a difference in both devices if, i.e. an application the takes up for than 1000 horses AKA "1000BHP" simply because the SGS2 can output more "BHP" at peak than what the SGS can offer.
Semaphore kernels have touchscreen sensitivity set to "Sensitive(chainfire)" by default. That explains why touchscreen sensitivity on SGS with Semaphore kernel is higher than a SGS2 with stock kernel (both screens should be roughly identical on stock).
And finally, SGS has Super Amoled which is more vibrant than SGS2 which has a Super Amoled Plus panel. Super Amoled panel uses "Pentile Matrix" arrangement which allows for images to appear more virbrant and saturated than Super Amoled Plus panel which uses regular 'RGB' pixel arrangement.
There is still a lot of potential in our devices spike the fact that it is nearly 2 years from release unlike the HTC desire which struggled in the graphics department since it was released! ~ Asphalt 5..-_-
P.S. our device is till a runner up for productivity & Graphics
We are seeing compatibility with newer gameloft titles (<<<<funny that O2X's tegra versions run a awful lot better than PowerVR ones) and console quality games.
Official CyanogenMOD support and XDA dev support brings miracles
My sgs with debloated JW4, rfs (data/data smlink to dbdata), sephamore bigmem (default clock), is almost identical to my gf's sgs2 (factory rom) in speed, opening apps, web-browser etc.
And I overclock mine to 1.2ghz, it is incredibly fast . But my phone doesn't handle OC well at all
But of course, I think if the updates/mods her firmware, the sgs2 will be faster. but the SGS2 was not an amazing upgrade for me at all, it is like ip4 to ip4s.
Agreed, if the sgs2 was 'tuned' then it would be much faster, I was surprised to find my sgs keeping up with the sgs2 tho' as it appeared much slower when I last compared them

Another fact is gingerbread has poor dual core support. On ICS difference is bigger. But s2 and s is very close because of our devs. S is even better on some 3D parts. Mali gpu is 400mhz which is 2x of our gpu. Anyway our gpu wins it with 200mhz on some 3D textures. Think when we live oc it.

This is so wrong.
SGS2 Super Amoled Plus is better, then it's about calibration and the tools you use.

I didn't say it was better, it was just about how the pixels were arranged. RGB is the best
Actually there is a race for more and more CPU cores, but SGS with ICS is really smooth, and if you don't plan to play high-end games, I think there is no real reason to change from SGS to SGS2.

Agreed, saw no reason to sign up to an 18/24 month contract for the SGS2 when I don't play high end games. Genuinely have had the most pleasant time with this phone, more than any other phone I have owned and it STILL isn't letting me down, especially with Voodoo Sound. Thats why I will be getting the SGSIII. People dig at Samsung for some reason but I honestly don't know why, their phones are awesome. HTC phones are plagued with bugs and issues, the overall user satisfaction between the two is phenomenal, I didn't come close to having this feeling with HTC's phones. (Hero, HD2 & Desire).
Frankly is like comparing a Bicycle with a Motorcycle ... both have wheels, handle bars, etc but let's be realistic here.
SGS is fine, a cool phone, huge development potential but it will never be able to top a dual core that punches double the ram we have.
You can throw whatever daily scenario at it and I can bet you you will be more pleased with the SGS2 simple because you won't be annoyed by memory swapping (even with 370 MB kernels I feel the need for more RAM).
Only if you keep the ROMS clean without anything else but stock apps you will most likely wasting your money on SGS2, better yet buy an old phone that handles just calls, smartphones are for running apps.
Currently have both, and to be honest "form factor" of SI is better for me.
JW5 gingerbread + Semaphore is incredible!!!
S1 has better battery life, less lag, better colors, better sound, better development, and reached maturity where everything just works.
S2 still has a great dual core and working gps.
Thats what I said! I did notice the poor battery life on the sgs2, I swear I could almost see the battery level move as I used it...
Sent using TCP/IP
I don't get this???
U are saying that sgs and gs2 is equal in performance, screen resolution and so on
There is huge difference in those to phones in all aspects,gs2 is a lot better in every possible way u can think of. Don't get me wrong,i love my sgs and will never sell it,but u can't compare a sgs with a costum rom and a gs2 with stock rom, compare when both are on stock or costum rom for a fair and clear result. But even when sgs is costum and gs2 is stock the gs2 is alot better on high performance.
Btw. I've had my sgs for more than 18month and my gs2 since 11/5-2011 and my first custom rom was insanity on one of his first froyo build(0.21 i think.
Thanx
Edit:gs2 battery is poor on ics,but on ginger there's only about 30 min difference
But who wants to still be using GB? The SGS was an IS a remarkable phone, remember all that time people spent moaning when Samsung said it wasn't getting ICS? Yet here all of us are, running it smoother than ever with better battery life than the SGS2. Don't get me wrong I am not digging at the SII, its a brilliant phone and I probably would have taken it had I been due an upgrade around then, however, no one and I mean no one can slate the SGS for what its been capable of, its far surpassed most peoples expectations, including mine.
yeah our galaxy was / is a cool / great phone. but it's slowly becoming outdated in terms of performance when it comes to daily tasks and multitasking - I for one (and I repeat myself) am hurting due to low ram always.
you can barely run services in the background. add a custom keyboard and some fancy stuff and boom you will get lag. you can run FROYO, GB, ICS you name it, once ram gets "depleted" everything is slower.
Yeah I do agree that if you do have a lot running at once it can start to get sluggish, but I've personally accepted it since ICS and keep processes to a bare minimum. I suppose once I upgrade hopefully to the next Galaxy phone they bring out I'll get back into the swing of maxing out the phone but for now I'm quite content with stock ICS and just using simple tasking apps
So I read through The Verge, Engadget and AnandTech (performance & battery) reviews and the general consensus was that performance and battery life isn't anything stellar. In fact, even though it has the same internal hardware (aside from the LTE) as the Optimus G, it performs significantly worse than the Optimus G.
AnandTech stated that it's probably due to thermal throttling(?) while Engadget blamed it on software that isn't in its final build yet.
Is anyone else extremely disappointed by the performance of this device?
I'm coming from a One X (AT&T) which performs much better on just about every benchmark there is and it's sad to see the device like the N4 performing far worse when it should be better (dual core S4 vs quad core S4, more RAM, more mAH etc).
Its the chrome browser, its really bad. I tried chrome on my gnex and scores significantly lower than the stock browser.
So your surprised a raw souped up hot rod burns more gas than a its less powerful more optimized counterparts?
:xda on sprint g-nex:
I fear that Anandtech is right, I can't think of any other way why the CPU scores in Antutu are that low,

How can the web browsing battery life be worse than the One X, they have a similar screen but the One X has a smaller battery and an old processor (40nm).
They have REVIEW UNITS.. which isn't final anything.
I just watched The Verge 's hands on review, and they said battery life was great, so I don't know what your talking about.
Either way, not final software = not a reliable source
Thats like testing a prototype car, and it sucks, when in reality, its not even final...
If it wasn't close to the final why google even send those review unit.

2100 mah battery will do me perfect... I get through about a day and a half without a single charge on my samsung galaxy s3, and it has a bigger screen, LTE, and the same battery. It shouldn't concern you, besides, there are tons of apps out there (like juice defender) that handle your radios and usage. It's a cell phone, it was made to get you through a full day, charge it up when sleeping, then use it again.
What did the Optimus G get? We should expect something similar I'm guessing if it is a software issue.
I saw in a video where the guy opened Battery Settings and Android OS took about 20 something % of the Battery... I remember there was a Bug in 4.0.3 ICS when i got an update on my Nexus s... Could be a software problem! Lets see what lands up in the final build!
Well, performance could be to thermal throttling. Do remember these units are probably quite old development units. As in the video by the verge the guy from google said 'we are still changing things on this device, even now'
Qualcomm is good at delivering driver updates for their GPUs, as not many devices use the Adreno 320 yet.

This.
Also, the fact that some of the screen shots showed that there was a software update ready means that there might have been fixes in store.
Take these reviews with a grain of salt, kids.
I'm still a bit perplexed as to what these reviews deem to be "poor" battery life. I mean, most of the reviews that I've read state that in tests utilizing an infinite loop of Google searches, or an infinitely looping video, they all got around 5.5 hours of Screen On time on cellular data only. On average, I'm lucky if I get 2.5-3 hours of Screen On time on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, with 4G turned OFF and connected to Wifi all day. With 3G only, that number comes down to about 2 hours of Screen On time. With 4G LTE on, that drops even further to about 1.5 hours of Screen On time.
I understand that the Optimus G gets the same Screen On time with 4G LTE on, and that without LTE the Nexus 4 should do much better. But to call 5.5 hours of Screen On time "poor" seems ridiculous to me.
EDIT: I should clarify that both my experience on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus and the reviews of the Nexus 4 that I referred to utilized 50% brightness.
Just wait until Google actually releases it. I personally don't trust hands on review because it's not a final release (both hardware and software) and they didn't have long time to use it

If 5 hours of screen time out of a day of usage, that's good by me. I get less than three hours with my Note so that will be an improvement. Same for me when I had the One X. I was lucky to get 3.5 hours with the One X on wifi, let alone LTE. I've also experienced from my Note that software makes a world of difference.
It is a review unit, they want them to find review its current state. Google said they are still changing it , even now

Hi all.
I'm looking to replace my Moto G 4G phone with something that has slightly bigger screen and better optics. I chose the Galaxy S4 & the Nexus 5. Specs-wise we all know the Nexus 5 wins hands down. But i want to talk about the latest 4.4.2/3 on the S4.
I would like to know of any improvements (speed, performance & photo quality wise) on the camera of the S4 and if the battery life has been improved as well.
I'm also a bit reluctant in the sense that bloateware seemingly still remains in the S4. Is Samsung tackling this? And what can i do to make the phone a bit more faster?
Please advice. Thank you.
If u want simple speedy interface with latest updates then nexus 5 is ur device.
S4 wins in term of extra touchwiz features, camera, battery life nd display(as i prefer amoled over ips lcd) .
One can always flash custom aosp custom roms on s4.
In the end its ur own decision.

AOSP ROMs for the S4 have lots of bugs usually involving the camera, video playback and sound quality. This was one of the main reasons I sold my S4 and got an N5, because I really dislike TouchWiz.

I got about the same battery life on both. The S4's camera is arguably better in most conditions, except low-light where the N5's OIS gives it an advantage.

Samsung is causing the bloatware problem, but rooting and removing junk is possible. That could trip the Knox warranty bit if you aren't careful. Installing a custom ROM will definitely trip Knox.
The only thing you can do to make the S4 faster is run an AOSP ROM or custom kernel, but there are penalties (mentioned above).
You can't go wrong with the N5 unless the difference in camera performance or having an AMOLED screen is that important to you.

the AMOLED screen is such a huge win for the S4 and i have yet to see a better camera on any other phone. However, the N5 OS is godly for purists. I have been researching for a week now how to flash an AOSP GPE rom on my S4 (att nc1) and the dev is just not there yet. There is a great thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2767026
with some really bright guys working it out but its still quite buggy. I am hoping to learn enough and flash this rom to my S4 and try to get the best of both worlds. IMO touchwiz is a gimmick, a day after i got the phone i turned off all the touchwiz features as i found them quite useless.
hope that helped

I used to swear by AMOLED screens. After I got the N5, I couldn't stand the bluish-green color cast of the S4 any longer, which put another nail in its coffin. I do miss the deeper blacks.

I do prefer stronger blacks, contrast & overall colours of the AMOLED so that's one vote for Galaxy S4. The battery life and capacity in the S4 is better than the N5 so that's two votes. The bloated Touchwiz i think is still better in terms of added features so that's three votes now. The camera has been a very contentious issue but in this respect "overall" the S4 will get my vote; i don;t do much night shots anyway.
I suppose there are always two sides of the coin when it comes to the UI bloateware. Yes its either you love it or hate it. Whenever i ring (or email) Samsung about my suggestions on performance, lessening bloateware, etc. i do wonder if they really listen to you. And i'm not into flashing ROMs or rooting and i still prefer the normal updates.
Will a "RAM optimisation" or "overclock" app help in increasing the speed & performance of my S4? Is there something in the Developer Options that i need to change or tick?
Please advice. Thanks.

I agree with you finally.
I get so annoyed with the blue tint after using my laptop and iPad.
I do think it has more to do with calibration however because the Tab 2 with a IPS has a blueish tint as well :/
And also I think movie mode makes the colours look wrong even though everyone says it looks more natural because they think they are experts and pro for stating Less saturated/grammar = more natural when in reality, the grammar looks wrong at least to be compared to other screens.

I have bought the Galaxy S4 (normal UK LTE version) and i like it. But again, these issue of bloateware is getting in my way, battery life down from fully charged (at 6am) to just 30% by 5pm on moderate use (basic checking emails, news, weather, downloading a newspaper mostly and not even playing games or watching videos) and slow performance. This is what i did so far.
I turned off:
Bluetooth
Wifi (when i'm out & about); Scan for nearby wifi networks turned off
GPS (70% of the time but my nature of work requires me to visit clients hence i need the GPS to look for their address but this is only around 1-2hrs max at any given day)
Auto-sync
Notifications (apart from BBC News, Instagram & Twitter)
NFC
Samsung own gimmicky motions & gestures
Wireless printing
Vibrate
S-voice
Installed the Snapdragon Battery Guru app
Power-Saving mode is Turned on
Brightness set to low (and not on Auto)
Set the all animations (from Developer Options) to the second lowest value
Installed an alternative lightweight(?) launcher like Nova.
Stopped all background tasks and Clear memory
The above tasks did helped a little but can't help notice still some performance issues (camera and some apps still loads at least 2 seconds which by today is slow), benchmarks show RAM & processor are seemingly under clocked.Compared to the Z1 Compact or Moto G 4G the general performance & smoothness of the UI is better than the S4. Is there anything else i can do?
Please help.

Ahh.. battery life is an issue with all smartphones today and considering that your phone is used for navigation for one to two hours max, that is incredible considering that the bloody iPhone 5S won't make it it past half a day with normal usage with 3G so 11 hours @ 30% is damn good for a smartphone.
Z1 compact has a snapdragon 800 chip so that cannot be compared but as for the Moto G 4G, the reason why it runs a lot smoother is due to the near stock android it is running so the best thing you can do is to install a AOSP rom on your S4.
I suggest disabling pre-installed apps.
As for benchmarks, my stock S4 isn't under clocking unless if it's on power saving mode or overheating.

What I can tell you about Nexus devices is this: you can pretty much do anything with it OS-wise. I was shocked by the ruckus about Knox voiding warranty and to me it's utter BS. I mean if I buy the phone, I should have the right to do anything with it. When you have a Nexus phone, when you root it, it doesn't trigger any warranty voiding schemes (because yeah root can void warranty, but just flash a clean stock rom and locking it again, it will be cleared for warranty). When the hardware of my S4 broke, I cannot have it repaired because of the knox warranty void, thankfully there's a service center here that didn't check the download mode. But I do have to agree on the points already mentioned, in terms of specs and hardware, S4 wins by a large margin. But hey, I always swear for Nexus devices (if there were any Nexus 5 devices here in my place, I would definitely buy that over my S4. Sadly, they do not stock up on N5 anymore because Samsung took over the smartphone market here in the Philippines.

As i said i have unchecked/stopped Notifications of almost all my apps apart from Gmail, Instagram, Twitter. That's it. If i need to enable some Notifications that would be Messaging and Whatsapp but nothing else. I will disable all pre-installed apps as you guys have suggested too and see if it helps.
I would like to further ask:
1. Would charging a brand-new battery (like mine) improve its actual "hours use" (i.e. battery life)?
2. Would resetting a phone improve its battery life by erasing some possible bugs or issues?
3. Would installing a battery-saving app like Battery Guru help or hinder my phone's battery life?

1. Battery life is a very subjective topic. It really boils down to how you use your device.
2. Depending on what you meant about reset, is it factory or just a normal reboot?
3. Battery savers are not fool proof, but they can tell you what's hogging the battery. I suggest battery doctor for this purpose.

What i mean about #1 is that i heard that when you buy a new device having a new battery the first few days the battery is still "adjusting" to its charged state. And after a few days once the battery has "learned" how the device is being used it "optimises" to its potential. Hence, the battery life will be what it is intended or advertised. Did i make sense?
As re: # 2 i meant the whole factory reset will it "flush out" or clear any bugs.
Would you still say Battery Guru is a good battery-saving app? Or not?

I have heard of what you meant with your first point but I do not know if it really does it like that.
Factory resets does make your device clean like the first time you got your device, so unless you don't have any hardware problems, it should fix the bugs.
I have read the reviews and they are mixed. I think it all boils down to personal choice. I swear by battery doctor coz I use it.

Going back to Issue #1 and talking about in "general terms" would charging a brand-new battery for a couple of times improve/optimise it's life thereby extending it in the long run? or would this depend on the algorithm or behaviour or programming of the OS or firmware?

Yeah, that is the battery doctor I am using. Li-ion batteries are interesting batteries because in order for them to be healthy, you need to charge between 50%-90%. Never overcharging and charging below 20% once a month will really improve the longevity of the battery. As far as the OS/software is concerned, it really depends on what you use your phone for. Also, if your battery is draining and you are sure that it's not the actual battery itself, you can use apps like Watchdog to see if which apps are hogging the battery.
I see. If those are the apps you guys have recommended and if they are lightweight then i shall try them.
But would you say there is no risk of overcharging a phone's battery? Say for example i started charging at 11pm and by 4am it is fully charged but i wake up at 6am instead to remove the plug. Would that have any impact?

According to the Battery Doctor App, overcharging is charging the phone for more than 9 hours. That would imply that if you overcharge too often, it will really shorten the lifespan of your battery.

Say for instance i'm at work and its 2pm and my battery is down to 50% which i feel i might not reach at home. If i charge my battery halfway thru the day would that still damage my battery or not?
Would you say that the Samsung Galaxy S9 is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Samsung Galaxy S9 exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Home button delays the same as in Galaxy S8, that's why you don't remove the physical one
I have owned the exynos variant for about 2 weeks. I use it having decreased the animation time and there is absolutely no stutter. I've come for the s7 which is no slouch and can feel that this is the most refined experience yet. You can't go wrong. I can't lie I had 'terrible' battery for about 1 and half weeks. But it's much better now.

Definitely no sloucher in gaming performance. Does not lack performance whatsoever, can handle all games including the Honkai Impact 3 at max settings with no fps drops. Its basically the second best gaming performer right now outperformed by the SD845. but although battery life is not bad, apparently SD845 is better in every way. This year i'd actually consider the SD845. What device do you currently own? Because that way i might advise you wait for the S10 where they will actually improve efficiently a lot with the new 7nm chips.
Edit: Don't get me wrong, i love the S9 even though i owned the S7 previously. The features it includes such as the Dolby Atmos supported stereo speakers, headphone jack and the great experience Touchwiz offers in my opinion. Touchwiz just looks better than stock android which otherwise is boring in my opinion and other manufacturers are still refining their experience. And if you don't like touchwiz? Get a launcher or even change your theme to your liking. Hopefully Samsung will increase the amount of software updates due to Project Treble support too.
It's just that depending on your device and its state, i'd wait for the S10 which i reckon will be the 'holy grail' (unless they somehow screw it up). By then performance wouldn't be a issue whatsoever and battery life should increase and hopefully capacity too.
Any more questions feel free to ask. I'm willing to help.

Woah thank you alot! Im having this kind of feeling where I am dissatisfied with the s9, especially with exynos, yet you made me calm. I got s5 from Dubai with Snapdragon which is surprising since SD is only available in US and in China, and this year, I hope that my model going to have on 13th of April is SD too. Im really excited! Anyways, coming from s5 to s9 is considerably a "good" upgrade, isnt? My screen is dying and it cant wait for s10 anymore

Most definitely, an upgrade from the s5 to s9 will be huge.
What i'd recommend you do to get around 4 and a half hours of screen on time is the following.
Turn off location services. Or revoke app permissions for any app that doesn't require it. Including Google maps because for some reason it tracks where you are constantly. That is if you prefer it on for Samsung find my phone.
Get a dark theme. And and try to keep your wallpapers dark once you've enabled it because for oled screens, only the required pixels turn on. I currently use Black_Edition_V2
Turn off NFC (unless you pay using your phone)
Go to Wifi, advanced (click the 3 dots on top right) and enable Wifi power saving mode. and disable turn on wifi automatically.
Enable power saving mode (Only turn on decreased 10% screen brightness, don't limit CPU or any of that.) Screen is super bright already so you won't notice a difference but apparently you get an extra hour of stand by time.
Turn on Dolby Atmos (it's off automatically for some reason)
Depending on your usage or preference, disable or enable always on display. I personally have it on a schedule.
Give it just over a week or so to learn your usage behaviour and once a week or so for the first month, discharge your phone fully and recharge fully.
Also what i'd recommend is turning on developer mode and putting animator duration scale to 0.5x. Your phone will feel much faster, and it'll be able to keep up so don't worry. This is your preference.
I might have missed some things, but this is what the basic changes are. But compared to the S5, it will be a beast. With all the android phones out there having notches, i reckon the S9 is still the best all in one device!
Otherwise enjoy your phone!!! :good:
