Development of HDMI - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any developers who are considering check what can be done to the HDMI output?
A wishlist:
Proper 16:9 ratio (crop home/back buttons)
Force output mode (720p, 1080i etc.)
Passthrough of digital audio streams (DD, DTS etc)
maybe more but that's what I have in mind right now.
Very thankful for anyone who has the time and interest in implementing this.

Your post has nothing to do with development. So why you ask your questions not in general section? Thats the right place.

I too would love this... The devs of mxplayer are seeing if they can implement the same thing google play movies does for hdmi with the nexus 10

The biggest problem we have is, this isn't a big problem for a lot of people... Most people don't even use the hdmi...
For those of us who do tho it is a huge problem

Sv: Development of HDMI
You are probably right. I just wish Google had implemented these functionalities from the beginning. Now it feels like a half hearted solution. Yeah we have picture sort of but no use for any media show off. Yeah we make a good tablet for movies etc but we skip good support for hdmi output.

No idea... Mostly all I care about is the scaling...
What sucks is that the exynos5 dual supports simultaneous native wqxga res(2560x1600) and 1080p at 60fps through hdmi so ii should be possible...
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:28 AM ----------
The good news is that Mxplayer will support full screen HDMI res for the nexus 10 the same way google play movies does...
I emailed them awhile back and they has me take some pics of what a video looks like on mxplayer and on Google movies... They just emailed me this morning saying they figured it out and it will be implemented in the next major update
Woohoo!

The N10 HDMI port DOES send audio along with the video. It works well with my Samsung HDTV. The issue is that each HDTV seems to have implemented the HDMI specification inconsistently. So some people get neither audio or video and others video only. Reading in this forum and other places Panasonic HDMI connection are notorious for poor HDMI support of devices. They most often fall in the category of no audio or video support.
As far as I know even with a working HDMI audio connection only stereo is transmited even if the source video has AC3 or DTS 5.1 audio. If you search in this forum you see people requesting that some ROM/Kernel devs add HDMI audio passthru support for the AC3 and DTS audio streams.

I send HDMI to a receiver anyway. I never thought to check but I definitely will be looking this afternoon to see if my receiver (Onkyo brand) supports both the video and audio properly from this tablet. Never had any issues though before with my computer, bluray player (Panasonic brand), or XBox. So I am assuming all will be fine for me.

HDMI quality is garbage so far...against hdmi 1.3

I picked up a Molex micro hdmi cable and have tested it against my 20" 720p Sceptre, my 37" 1080P Sceptre, 43" 1080P Sceptre and several 1080P monitors at my place of work...all with same results.
Picture is pixellated, "choppy" and it seems phone can't keep up.
I am sending 720P videos created with phone (I set it to 720p) and can see that ALL the tvs receive as 720p signal...yet image quality is so poor it's borked.
All of these TVs were hdmi 1.3 I believe...is this solely an hdmi 1.4 issue?
Loving my Evo except hdmi is fubar. I have a few days left on eval and may return it if this feature is truly not appropriate for phone (due to cpu issue).
I am perfectly willing to wait for g'bread if this will make a difference.
What's the deal here?
Check it against a better TV. Those Scepters just don't use the same quality as say even a Visio, let alone a Sony or Samsung.
Worked wonderfully for my brother's 46" LG LCD
So... a Walmart TV with an HTC phone and you say the phone quality sucks? I'm confused jk bro. Haha
I have a Phillips 32' and the HDMI is horrible for me. I played a HQ Video of Everybody Hates Chris and it was so choppy and fuzzy I just disconnected it. I have a 6ft cable. Could the length have anything to do with it?
sceptre is the same quality as visio hate to break it to you. plays properly on my 32" samsung.

Picture quality is crap because your videos are encoded at a low bitrate so there gonna look pixilated.
When I recode my Blu Ray movies to x.264 720p with a high bitrate and play them back using HDMI to my Sony Bravia they look AMAZING.
You need to encode some quality videos. The built in camcorder or youtube aren't gonna do it justice.

Actually they were purchased at CostCo several years ago and price compared to that of others sets for most part. I wasn't aware costCo sold crap brands...not my experience with them.
Odd that my blu-ray, cable box and other hi-def input sources play beautifully on my sceptres and only the HTC has issues. Sceptre's now the problem? Hmmm...
Time to run by Fry's and see what works and what doesn't.
To those who are getting a stunning picture via hdmi...are your sets hdmi 1.4 protocol?

What I'm saying is the videos you record using the phones camcorder are encoded at a low bitrate making them look like ****. HDMI output is only as good as the source quality.
I suggest you read this as well since you seem to think that HDMI revisions automatically mean improved video quality.
http://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/faq.aspx#12
The problem isn't the Evo or your TV, it's your source material. The 720p from the camcorder is compressed so much that it doesn't look that good.
Encode a movie using a high bitrate (somewhere around 5000), and it'll look good. Just like mine do.
Dude, I was kidding. lol
What about streaming videos from something like mPlayer? Those also look like sh*t, as the OP mentioned. Is that a tv problem or is that a "bitrate" problem?
Thanks for the help all.
After installing handbrake to convert some trailers I am finally seeing a not-so-****ty picture. The whole re-encoding thing bites hard though. Who really has time to convert all their **** or even wants to do it selectively? I know I don't.
The fact that the device isn't capable of creating its own hdmi content is pretty bad and somewhat misleading: 720P on vidcam app during record....720P hdmi signal out per notification window...sounds like a match to me!
For all "practical" purposes the hdmi port is fubar.
#1 You don't get desktop 'experience' on hdmi out
#2 Feature doesn't come for "free", apps must be individually hdmi-enabled (yeah right)...so no TermSrvr or VNC
#3 Device can't create videos for clean hdmi playback (at least with native 720p vid recording app)
where are you guys getting your HDMI cables? last time I checked monoprice didn't stock them.

Agree. The hdmi out is wasted space on this phone. If it worked, this thing would be the hub of my media center! Especially with stuff like JetFlix streaming in crisp hi-def to the t.v. But, no. With the quality as-is, I don't see myself ever using it.
I suppose I could encode existing movies for playback, but why would I use my phone to store them? I'd just burn a dvd or bring a external hard drive. At that point, I'd just be using my phone to watch them on a plane or something, and you don't need an HDMI port for that.
But this isn't a dealbreaker for me. I still love the phone.

[Q] Possible to output picture to TV?

Probably a noob question, but i dont know so i thought id ask.
Do we have any way at all to output the Xperia Play picture to a TV yet?
Would be great to plug it into the TV while i am in bed and control iplayer and youtube and play some games etc.
the only 2 things that ive seen is
1. theres a new prototype play with a hdmi out on it and there is a video on youtube of someone using it.
2. ive seen a S.E docking station thats coming out that has a hdmi output
on it but its unclear if this adds hdmi to our plays, or just for the new plays that have hdmi out on already?

Man, better not to answer if you don't know something well. That can confuse a lot of people.
1- The prototype you talk about it's just the device that the developers buy to make games for the Xperia Play and test them.
2- The LiveDock Multimedia Station (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImnhFtmyHNA) uses the USB port of some Xperia phones and outputs the image through the HDMI output that the dock has. The bad new is that the Xperia Play is not one of the compatible phones, although it has USB port.
And if there would be that new Xperia Play with HDMI output, why the heck would you need this dock if the mobile already would have HDMI output???
Someone said you can use a micro
Hdmi cable to connect it why not try? ;P

I have a feeling they may release a USB - HDMI adapter for the Xperia Play but will also need software on the phone like Bravia Sync to allow for the phone display to be pushed to HDTV.

That will be awesome (if SE decide to go with this idea).
Where do I have to sign to get one ?
I just want to be able to connect my first smartphone (the PLAY) with my 55" LED screen ... even my former, former, former dumb phone (Samsung D900) was capable of it... after that the replacements a Samsung F480 and a Samsung S8000 (the famous "Jet") weren't able.
anyway... I'm loving the Play... just hope SE don't leave us unsupported.

Hi from what I am reading the nx10 HDMI out is only mirror image that will not fill the HDTV format. Is this a hardware issue on nexus 10 end or can it be corrected in a software update..? I would actually buy and rent movies with Google play if I can watch them full screen on my TV.
If Google fixes this issue I see more people utilizing their movie service.
Till then I am using Microsoft Xbox.
Thanks...joe
When I connect my N10 to my plasma TV it reports 1080p which is the maximum this TV supports so I think it's device dependent based on the max of either the TV or tablet but given the resolution of the N10 the TV is likely to be the limit.

If you watch movies it does automatically fill the entire screen. It also switches to a slightly different mirroring mode where it doesn't technically mirror.
Games etc. don't fill the entire screen though. Neither does the launcher etc.
1080p
Also confirmed 1080p output to TV from my nexus 10, with a HDMI cable that is a few years old from when I picked up a droid charge a couple of years ago.

I am not sure why I dont get full screenI use a a cable that supports 1080P AND I have to use a hdmi switch because my tv only has 3 inputs and I needed a 4th. When I play the movie trailer in play store it does not widen the screen. I still have black bands on sides like I do when nexus mirrors image. My tv supports 1080p. Is a sony xbr2 40". A little old but if my bluray player is fine why not nexus.

On my LG Full HD 1080p 37" TV, the mirrored display from my Nexus 10 to the TV is always coming out with black edges roung the screen ie not being displayed in full screen. The only options in terms of aspect ratio for the TV are 4:3 or 16:9 when connected to the tablet. The Zoom1 and Zoom 2 options can only be accessed when viewing normal TV or DVDs. Is there a way I can fill up the black edges on the TV with what's being displayed from the tablet? The only way i get full screen is when i watch videos from Google Play Movies. I would live to stream videos from XBMC in full screen mode if possible. Thanks. The info displayed when the OK button on my TV's remote is being pressed shows 1920*1080 @60Hz when Tablet is connected to TV via HDMI

[Q] mhl adapter 24p movie playback

hi folks,
i've seen on the forum here that the new mhl 2.0 adapter outputs video at 60fps. can this be changed or is it fixed? i output mkv HD movies hdmi from my laptop and need to set it to output 24p to get smooth playback on my TV. if i set it to 60 the playback is not as smooth. so can these new adapters do 24p? or maybe at the default 60fps movie playback is smooth anyway?
thanks!
60>24 so 60 fps is smoother. 24p is the original frame used for films,if you need the original/untouched effect you need 24fps. Otherwise the 60 is smoother. Btw, your TV knows 24 p?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium f
I set my laptop to output 24p which is actually 23.976. most mkv movie files are 23.976 fps. My lg tv recognises this and plays it back flawlessly. I'm looking for a solution for the s4 that works as well as the laptop. So hoping that the mhl adaptor will allow me to set the output to 24p (23.976) as well. Anybody got any experience with this yet?
judder
well i finally got the samsung mhl 2.0 adapter today. unfortunately it was as i feared. 24p and 25p playback is juddery. its not terrible but its there. the s4 is sending 24p movies out at 60hz leading to frame rate mismatch. you'll notice this most on panning shots and such-like. does anyone know of a way to get the s4 to output 24p with this adapter? the tv tells me its receiving 1080p 60 from the s4 no matter what.

This is the only comment I can find in this subject anywhere. I have the exact same problem. My s4 is trying to play a 24fps movie on an mhl lead with a 60 output and it judders badly on panning scenes. I find it amazing that no one has even commented properly on this let alone suggest any solution. Does every single smartphone user simply not really care about the judder?

This isn't a solution more of a realisation that I think the problem is with the s4 not the mhl lead. If you play the video on the phone and look a little closer at it you see the same motion judder. On a large tv this judder is magnified and is more noticeable. But the judder playing HD or mkv files is something that is there in the s4 itself. It seems there's virtually no one that's bothered by it so a fix is highly unlikely.

[Q] Can OUYA work as a full-feature mediacenter?

I am interesting in OUYA because it has a slim body. I dont want to play video game on it. The only thing I want to do is to play movie. I have a lot of movies stored in my laptop. The current way that I use is to connect my laptop to HDTV by HDMI. Can OUYA replace my current method? I can play 720P movie(MKV or RMVB) on my cellphone(Galaxy note 2). Ouya has the same equipment(Tegra3 with 1.7G). So I think it can play 720P movie smoothly like my cellphone. Did anyone here try playing moive on OUYA?
Yes the ouya plays 720p movies well. I use xbmc at the time. I was thinking about the ouya or the raspberry pi and I am glad I bought the ouya. The ouya, for my use and purposes, is an awesome media center. The internal storage is small but it has a usb port. Xbmc has support for a network attached storage (nas) which is what I use. The ouya also has the added benefit of games. For only $99.99, I recommend the ouya for your current situation. It also has low power usage and it is highly portable.

if you want to use your ouya exclusively as mediacenter you can start xbmc with a autorun-app, don't know what it's called tho.
only culprit is that the button layout isnt quite optimal when using ouya controller but i'm using my cellphone with yatse installed and as a media-solution this couldn't be any better.
not only 720p but even 1080P movies (shared from my nas) are being played like a charm and if you*'e into 3D the ouya should be able to handle most formats, too...but didn't try that, since my tv doens't support it

i didn't have any issues with fullhd-mkvs yet. for all i know there are some culprits with surround sound, but didn't notice anything major up to now.
you can without any problem plug your sd card reader/usb-harddrive/etc to your ouya. the device will be mounted to /media/usb
if you want you could even use a dvd-drive for your ouya, as long as you are willing to compile the needed module for your kernel.
didn't try it yet, but atrix with tegra 2 was able to do this, so ouya with tegra 3 should be able, too

Short answer: Better get an raspberry pi with Openelec.
Longer Answer:
yes, i do have 2 and did use one as mediaplayer using mostly XBMC (connected to a linux fileserver) at my home and using it with VLC when beeing at my girlfriends place with an 2TB HD.
Unluckily i really cant recommend it atm because the XBMC version for android/ouya is still lacking CEC support, means you cant use your TVs remote for controlling it and it cant do AC3 audio passthrough over HDMI (if i remember correctly). The XBMC for android still cant play a lot of movie files my Raspberry PI does play without problems. Therefore it makes a much better media player if its ok for one to not use the most fancy XBMC Skins. (I recommend Bello Skin)
In addition to this the Ouya lacks support for direct flashing and a lot of poeple find the companies politics highly questionable. The not acceptance of the last TOS locked my Ouya Console completely and not just the market. Its softbricked now. It has been sold as an "open" project but turns out to be as closed as "a nuns arse". Therefore its unluckily unlikely that we will see an Openelec port for the Ouya. Someone did port Debian to Ouya so there might be a solution using Debian and XBMC but AFAIK there are not all drivers and libs working atm.
¨
cheers,
Tycho
Dont mean to be rude but i dont think you are objektive here.
I dont know what files you are unable to play but i am using mine a lot for Multimedia and didnt have any issues with audio at all. I know that some special dts Formats are incompatible for now.
Surly there are some things about ouya that many of us don't like but that's not the point here. Some are codec support and cec which are still under construction and might always be, but seriously: raspberry?
I really wouldn't want to have such a laggy interface and long folder loading times.
If you really want sth fully compatible with all major Codecs and cec and so on get a finished product like little black box or sth similar. Else be happy to have sth. to tinker with.

Losing faith if I'm honest. I have been giving this project my backing because it seemed to have an enthusiastic following.
I'm not sure there is the focus on the issues that matter to ME, I'm not sure how many people wanted this little box specifically for XBMC but I suspect it was a few. I know the DTS/AC3 issue is an XBMC problem and nothing to do with OUYA but the several other little niggles that affect it are not being addressed.
I think I am going to sell it, I am done waiting for it.. the time multi audio is comming if it even is comming the ouya will be old. The lack of support and community is the other reason.

Ok what I experienced so far is this :
Normally I have my ouya plugged into my TV which is set up to pass aby audio signal through to my home cinema center via optical output. There I never had any issues up to now. Lately I had plugged the ouya into the TV of our bedroom and with xbmc I get audio issues as well.
But vlc and I guess plex as well are able to play ball those files without any issue.
So i guess it's also up to your setup which audio technologies are supported.

I use xbmc on ouya and I have dts and DD passthrough at least on my sony 5.1 home theater. It seems that it depend also from your home theater and/or TV as if you connect the ouya directly to TV and TV doesn't have audio pass through, it will work only analog 2 channel audio.
Good to see someone agreeing to my experiences.

Really? Xbmc on ouya can decode DTS and output 5.1 channels to home theater? I saw a lot of people complained of decoding DTS failure. Be honest, I am frustrated when I saw these comments, because I just ordered one from Amazon and I have a lot of 720P DTS MKV movies. My original thoughts is that connecting ouya to 5.1 home theater. I did saw ouya can output 2.0 or 5.1 surround sound effects on their website. Hoping XBMC V13 could be more perfect.
For some ppl it is working indeed, by switching of amp and turn it on again.
But not for everyone... When I try it I just get same static noise as before...
I never had 5.1 working whatever I tried.
Tried several options in xbmc but it would not change anything

Ouya can decode DTS mkv, I just tested it and my home theater received a PCM audio stream (analog settings on xbmc audio output) and then tested the same mkv with digital signal pass through to my home theater (digital HDMI audio output in xbmc settings) that decoded it fine.
Only thing is that if ouya decode the DTS signal, I have PCM 2 channels audio, if my home theater decode it, I have DTS 5.1 channels audio (my HT is only 5.1).
For the records, I use xbmc 13.0 alpha6 from july 14 2013.

You get static noise because your ouya is passing through the digital signal to your TV or HT to decode the signal. And clearly your receiver is not able to decode the audio stream. You have to change the audio setting output of xbmc to "analog" in order to let xbmc decode it before sending it out to your TV or HT.
