Probably a noob question, but i dont know so i thought id ask.
Do we have any way at all to output the Xperia Play picture to a TV yet?
Would be great to plug it into the TV while i am in bed and control iplayer and youtube and play some games etc.
the only 2 things that ive seen is
1. theres a new prototype play with a hdmi out on it and there is a video on youtube of someone using it.
2. ive seen a S.E docking station thats coming out that has a hdmi output
on it but its unclear if this adds hdmi to our plays, or just for the new plays that have hdmi out on already?

That 'prototype' is for development use only.
Someone said he used a usb to hdmi adapter but then he was uncontactable...

The plays with HDMI out, are development models, its not a new version

Man, better not to answer if you don't know something well. That can confuse a lot of people.
1- The prototype you talk about it's just the device that the developers buy to make games for the Xperia Play and test them.
2- The LiveDock Multimedia Station (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImnhFtmyHNA) uses the USB port of some Xperia phones and outputs the image through the HDMI output that the dock has. The bad new is that the Xperia Play is not one of the compatible phones, although it has USB port.
And if there would be that new Xperia Play with HDMI output, why the heck would you need this dock if the mobile already would have HDMI output???
Someone said you can use a micro
Hdmi cable to connect it why not try? ;P

I have a feeling they may release a USB - HDMI adapter for the Xperia Play but will also need software on the phone like Bravia Sync to allow for the phone display to be pushed to HDTV.

Where do I have to sign to get one ?
I just want to be able to connect my first smartphone (the PLAY) with my 55" LED screen ... even my former, former, former dumb phone (Samsung D900) was capable of it... after that the replacements a Samsung F480 and a Samsung S8000 (the famous "Jet") weren't able.
anyway... I'm loving the Play... just hope SE don't leave us unsupported.

Can you output 1080p (or even 720p) video out through the HDMI port to a nice big TV?
I was reading somewhere that this may not be possible...
I was told you could and I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to but I haven't tried it yet. Need to find a cable

I think it's micro hdmi so I have a cable but no xoom yet. One of the first things I plan on testing when it shows up next week.

No need for the dock. The thread of someone having used it was pushed down to page 4.
That show's mirroring though. I want to see true Video output in 1080p.
I used my dx hdmi cable too hook up to me 65 in dlp and got 720p.
It basically just mirrors screen. I couldn't get xoom screen to turn off though. Didn't wait that long.
Watched some of a AVI movie via rock player and worked very well. Not 1080 though

Turns out its a sucess in my opinion. The only thing is that the cable is not included.
I want to know if u guys are getting one and on which website/prices.
Definitely getting one but most sites like Expansys, Clove etc say early June for getting stock.

I thought the Lady Gaga video at the beginning was 1080p...
It was, or at least its file name indicated that (they should have brought up the media details while it was playing to show that).
I was quite tickled to have beaten them to demo'ing USB OTG!
(I wonder if they are the one person to dislike my video so far?!)

I htink you can if the TV supports that, otherwise you need to power the sucker up.
I think video output is limited to 800x480 regardless of video source because it's display mirroring, it does not switch off the lcd when playing video. That's my opinion.

You only need the power cable if you want to charge the phone while it's connected. The HDMI output will work regardless.

If it was so, we can't experience full HD movies?! or it just rearranges screen after playback the movie?

According to the article, the display won't work without being plugged in:

I'm completely confused!
Are we saying that if you want to connect the phone to a tv in order to play a video, you MUST have either (a) an MHL-capable tv or (b) the charger also plugged in?
If so, that's completely ridiculous. Who the hell wants to carry their charger all the time?
If only someone could confirm this. Except none of us have the damn cable!
I'm seriously reconsidering this phone. What with the complaints about the audio, the complaints about the GPS, and now this.

In the MHL consortium video from MWC it shows the display on the phone turning off on video playback (with onscreen media controls showing). For video I am quite sure its output is 1080p (Samsung have an official walkthrough video on youtube today which specifically states this also).
Yeah, I think It's 1080p too. What tv does even support 800x480 resolution? Ofcourse its upscaled somehow. And what idea would it be to support playing full hd if you can't see that its hd?

Personally I'd rather have the option for both, but having to require the charger being plugged in seems to be the lesser of two evils. At least this way you can have the phone continually on if you're using it for extended periods of time on a large screen.

Has anyone tried whether you get TV Out using the 3.5mm jack? I know the quality wont be as good but just want to know.

This works perfect i use it to watch sky go on my tv my parents have sky tv so i put sky go on my phone and plug it in and away i go. No subs for me lol its just a pain when people try to ring or i get a text.
I bought an HDMI cable today so I can put Netflix onto my TV. I have an older HDTV, from 2004. It's a Panasonic model number pt-47x54j. When I plug my tablet into it, the little Android dude pops up onto the TV and and says 720p? I checked the owners manual and it says that the TV is only capable of 1080i, or 480p and 480i. I plugged my tablet into a more modern HDTV and it works just fine. Crystal Clear. Is there any way that I can get my a500 to work on my Panasonic TV? Attached is a screenshot of my TV's owner's manual on the page where it talks about HDMI inputs. Thanks in advance...
From the best of my knowledge you can't change this.Athens beat solution I could offer is Logitech Google TV.it rocks.and 70.00 amazon.
It can't be changed without hacking the drivers -- and even then micro HDMI is only capable of 720p output. All you can do is use a different TV or an adaptor (probably cheapest, but may lower video quality).

Thanks. At this point, I'm just using my tablet to watch the movies on. That's good enough for me. Once my TVs start breaking and/or if I get this dream job that I'm currently chasing after, I'm going to get a more modern TV and all of my HDMI cable worries will go away. I put the Netflix App on my phone too. My 3 year old freaking loves it!! He is always asking for my phone to watch cartoons on. It's hilarious. haha
Of course, I'm still going to try to figure this crap out with my current TV. That's the fun part.

micro HDMI itself is capable of 1080p, but the tablet will only output 1080p if there's a 1080p stream (such as a 1080p movie). Netflix will not do 1080p, though.
Hey, wondering if anyone else is getting varied resolutions when using a micro HDMI -> HDMI cable into a TV. We have a 37" plasma 1080 capable but I only get 480 out of, and our 42" LCD only gets 720.
Both are default numbers as I haven't been able to find anyway to adjust them. Have tried stock video player, MX player and YouTube through all to no avail.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most appreciative.

You may want to check your hdmi cable. If you have a "standard hdmi cable" , and it supports up to 1080i/720p. The type 2 "high speed data hdmi cable" supports 1080p, 3d and high color. Your tv's and tablet may support it, but you may be using a standard hdmi cable.

I haven't looked, does the n10 support 1080i?... I notice most devices and movies I look at only support "p" areas (480p, 720p and 1080p) relevant since I plan to buy a big screen LED tv with my tax return...
Cheers for the heads up, I've read in other forums that the n10 downscales to 1080, but haven't seen it first hand.
There's a few variables at play, I'll get some specs from the TV's, I haven't seen any different type of cables on eBay else I'd have got the better one (i spent $15 on this one).

I purchased a $10 off of Amazon. Supposedly a HS cable. Real thick and almost 6 feet long.. Nice, but the TV I had planned to use it on, it did not output sound! 2 other sets, and the sou d works fine. I read here that it is a cable/tv combination problem.. Plug in another hdmi and the sound will work fine. Haven't tried it since I hooked it into the stereo via blue tooth.
I am planning to buy a small converter attachment,(pigtail cable or plug) that way I can use the hs hdmi cables I already have on the tv. I am still not convinced that it isn't a problem with android, but we'll see.

Looks incredible. Console mode allows to put shield next to the TV and let stream from the PC - in 1080p with 60FPS.

Currently HDMI output only works at 720p at 30 fps AFAIK. This states 1080p at 60 fps with the update, that's something I've been looking forward to.
This, with a wireless xbox 360 controller.... I won't have to lug my tower across the house anymore when I want to game on the couch, or deal with low res and a long HDMI cable.

Awesome update. They mention official support of the bluetooth niko gamepad and also playing with the lid closed. If the support is open for other gamepads (it should be) this is big news for future of the shield as a serious console, handheld or TV connected.
I'm really happy to own this little toy. Long life to the shield!
And the console mode give us real 1080p output outside of movie playback. So we can play all Android games in 1080p or use Shield as small PC with 1080p output.
Damn, the future for this kind of devices looks very bright now.

Yes, many other game controllers work as well (They must support standard Bluetooth HID if they're bluetooth).
This is great news as I already have a moga pro, looks like I will be playing a lot of my PC games in the living room....wife's going to hate me haha.

Awesome, was the D-PAD buttons issue during PC Streaming resolved?
And what about PS3 and XBOX controller? Android has native support of both when connected with usb cable. But both have the D-PAD issue.
The PS3 controller can be used as HID bluetooth but root is needed with the sixaxis control app.
