why doesnt xda have its own custom app? maybe somethine like a community made ui and every designer and dveloper has a hand in it?.... im sure if we all work together we can make a custom ui just for xda then they can either sell it or just give it away kind of like how google has android but ours will be much much much! better... we can make something completely new and original.... our powers on here if we band together is limitless
heck! we can even make a totally new os!! if we all put our heads together!
Kudos to XDA
i second u bro... nice thought..
well th developers n everyone here can join hands (if they want too!!) n accomplish this for sure..
it can be a kind of project as like th already up n movin "Touch Surface ROM" for elf... well by th means of it
"MORE than tht n on a BIGGER n HUGE basis" ~~ with all th devs n ppl here!!!
two thumbs up bro for th thought .. cheers.. XDA rules ^.^
I think you underestimate the complexy of that. This requires a lot of organization, planning, free time from developers and organizators, a common development base (EVC? DevStudio '05? '08? .NET or native? Any/which existing libraries? ...), and so on.
Another problem is: you can't make a program everybody likes. Just look at all the different "iPhonish" contact managers (PCM, iContact and derivations, FFF, ...). They all seem alike at first glance, but everybody here preferes another one. And adding 20 pages of settings wouldn't make it much better... Or have a look at Linux: still two major desktops, lots of different window managers, long lasting (and partly really good) tries to get all different APIs in one "super library" for developers, ...
And then there are so human things like vanity and greed, that can make working together really hard (Who gets the credit? Who the donations? And how much for which work?).
Great Idea boy,
or at least waht about an xda-dev pack with all the dev tools for the dirrerent devices?
I mean without this page many things still would be impossible
Just an idea but I'd like a program that works seamlessly with the xda site instead of using the browser. Kinda like how yahoo or some of the other companies try to make things to work with their stuff. Only, this would blow all the others away. Just some ideas.
1) Have a today plugin that scrolls through threads you've subscribed to.
a) It could alert you when a new version of something is released
2) Have a latest news on xda area in the main program.
3) Let you see your favorite section or phone and only recieve those updates but from there be able to browse the others.
I'm just brainstorming but I imagine it could be something really cool. Just a thought after reading the 1st post.
The biggest problem there is, we still don't know much about the hardware - to be more specific - the HTC board. To overcome this we need a lot of work on reverse engineering the HTC drivers, guessing the GPIOs... etc, which is, not really possible.
Writing code for embedded devices is quite different from PCs. It's very hard to get good performace, or even working programs without knowing the hardware.
I ran into this issue with my G1, and the workarounds were kludgy at best. is there any possibility of getting the HTC Dialer from say - the droid eris - on the nexus one? I had it with my g1 on the rogers rom, but lost some key functionality(for me anyways). Since the nexus one isn't carrier specific, I'm going to assume that there aren't going to be too many roms floating around.
So does anyone else feel like this is a HUGE miss on htc's part? The android dialer is 'ok', but it's so much easier to dial the first 2 or 3 letters of someone's first and last name and have it pop up in a list rather than go to my favorite tabs and scroll up and down looking for who i want to call.
Granted, this is google's baby, so it's free of outside software, but come one. They can't honestly think the shipped android dialer is better...could they?
I'd love to hear someone chime in and say that they've got it running, but seeing as how the htc frameworks are rooted incredibly deep into the os, i'll assume that's a no-go. I'll settle for some feedback though. Does anyone miss this feature?
No, the android 2.1 dialer is way better than HTC's version.
Tip: You can search for users in the general search tool. Just press the search button, and start typing the name. A lot faster than browsing through the contact list.

Superdial doesn't work on 2.1 either
I'd been using the free app superdialer from the market for this same functionality. Unfortunately it isn't working with the 2.1 contacts list quite yet
t9 contact search on the dialer itself is indispensable. I don't know why this isn't part of the stock dialer.

Better ? And in which way because I can't see it ?
Try StarContact
I agree with the OP. I don't understand why Google doesn't offer T9 support on the default dialer. It is in my top 5 frustrations with Android.
That said, I've been using StarContact (in the market) since it first came out for the G1. It works on the Nexus as well. The HTC dialer is still better, and I loved it when I had the Rogers rom on my G1. Too bad that rom stopped at 1.5.
spelldial from market works with 2.1 now and is amazing.
Start asking your questions in the right sub-forum (Q&A) (Theme) or even in (General), or simply search.......This isn't a developmental subject, Thank you.
Final result will be a ban for you up too 3 days.
If you persist on posting in wrong forums.
Thread Trashed!!
Rule that apply:
1. Search before posting
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search function with google' in the menu above each and every page in the forum.
its still here lol
yup. missing that t9 capability that's nice in the htc dialer... the android one seems rather empty of features...
I'm getting really sick of all of the people who won't post their questions in the right forum. Also, I'm sick of people asking how to get HTC proprietary apks to work on the Nexus. If I can get a dump of a sense UI on 2.0 or later with the right screen resolution I will port it. Until then, you can't get HTC apps to work on the Nexus. So quit asking, please.

What he said.
Also, turn off "Web Search" and "Music" in settings for the Google Search
widget, and you'll have a very fast, handy way of getting into contacts from
the home screen. Turning off "Web Search" only turns off Web Suggestions btw.
Type in whatever you want and hit enter and it'll take you to the browser.
PS: Yes, this is the wrong section, but this had to be said
Well I think a ban is a bit harsh. It would take less time to just move the thread and close it vs posting a huge post... which can be equally wasteful. Being a new upcoming N1 owner and new to Android, all of this is new to me as well. I think the Development forum would be accurate IMO.
Anyway. Good thing this thread wasn't deleted because it has some useful information. My neighbor has a N1 and it was one thing that I noticed it lacked. SpellDial looks like a good fix until Google adds this functionality in the stock dialer. Also, good info on the Google Search options, I'll try that too.
An app called dial one brings this. It's free in the market and works excellent.
It's Dialer One and it rocks

Great app indeed
I had my hd2 for 2 months and i love it. But, im getting very disappointed that it's lacking in apps and community support unlike the andriod and iphone os. I see poplur apps that are available for android and iphone but not wm. i am starting to wish i never got the hd2 and really wish i knew about the evo thats coming out soon.
on top of that i see the phone on ebay has really dropped in price to about £270 ($411)
so is it possible to put android on hd2?
Wow
Before you get blasted for making a post and not searching let me give you some advice, Search! There are a LOT of threads about Android on HD2, it's not there yet but it is being worked on. Really, type Android in the search bar and you will see all the threads asking the same thing, good luck

Your luck i just dont have the energy today
While we are on this topic, is it possible to use my HD2 as a vacuum cleaner?

If you used the search functions (like most people) you would find your answer.
If you did this simple thing you would find that at this time, its not yet possible, HTC have the best group of developers on it but are having some trouble with the porting or something.
I'm just a few days away from being able to use my HD2 as a micro-oven

I bet your cooked ROMs will taste delightful!
Off: I succeeded in using my HD2 as a condom yesterday! Took me ages to port every bit of information...
On: Let's assume you haven't read the forum rules, thus you wouldn't know about the built in Search function. There`s Google. Why not Google for something (such as "android on hd2")? After all, it`s much easier to type and to read than typing a long post on a board where you need an account and where you need to wait for others to answer your question...
At least he searched the price of the HD2 on ebay...
i bet you guyz are unfriendly , help him if not *********** ,......,
anyway its still under development and needs some time i can say its 40 % to its full
potential

It also really surprised me to see the price of HD2 drop down so quickly. Maybe mostly because not so many people can get on well with HD2, which is the best phone I've ever bought.
Easy on the flaming guys. Im sure he understands now. For all u know, u might just drive someone away from xda with negative thoughts......where as this is one of the most helpful community.
Like yourself I'm a new HD2 owner. I can understand why you might think there's a lack of apps for our device, when devices like the iPhone have 160,000+ apps. However I've found four different GPS nav apps out there (Igo, CoPilot, TomTom and Garmin), an app to make a flashlight out of your camera LEDs, a registry editor, a voice-dialler, a metal detector, a decent file explorer, a media player etc etc etc. The question needs to be asked, how many media players / file explorers / gps apps do you need on your device? For me, one of each is more than enough. Many of the iPhone apps are just double-ups of the same functionality.
After getting my phone I spent the next week on XDA searching for apps, themes, tweaks and games, trying them out and working out what works and what doesnt.
My HD2 is now running and looking mint, and I've got more games than I know what to do with. As the others in this thread have already pointed out, you do need to take the time and use the search function.
As for support, you couldn't be more wrong - it was the emmense wealth of knowledge of XDA-developers that gave me the confidence to buy the HD2. It will take you time to find the info you're looking for in these forums, but the answers are there, and you'll end up with a superior phone to the iPhone if you're prepared to give it a chance.
Drop me an email on [email protected] if you'd like to know where to find the bits you're after.
Not only he did not serch .. but hes speling sux too. !
This is one of the funniest Android response threads that I've read lmao. At least the repsonses were good natured and not hateful like some other threads have been. And I hope the OP didn't get scared away, he should think of it as his initiation. And Im sure a lot of Senior users had at least one noobie moment in the beginning.
When I had my Shadow/Juno and started modding my first post was "where is the windows folder"

This won't work, I promise you. I'll sign up anyway though
Also, I think this belongs in the General section.
maybe it won't work, but it's just 2 clicks.
Signed!
I know that it will hardly work, but it is just to see how many angry Tattoo owners are in my condition.
I placed the post in this forum because it is somewhat development related, however if a moderator wants to move it to the general discussion forum it is ok for me.
It wont work, but I sign it anyways, cant hurt to try
signed. another petition should be to remove HTC SenceUI
Yes! Signed!
Better spam HTC with emails. They wont care even if milion people sign it.

So, let's spam them, too! We should collect a list of relevant email addresses to be contacted both from HTC (obvious) but also from Google, to inform the big brother Google that its main partner in android mobile devices is making some users very disappointed.
I've found a contact form at this address, any other contact possibility?
http://member.htc.com/CustomerService/CS_Mail.aspx
I'have done!
Signed by me, although I've already ranted at them by mail.
signed but im tired of spam them... always the same answer....
i think that dev will develop a new rom with camera before an offcial htc answer...
Maybe it would be good idea if we make some well thought out email so that the all people from this forum start sending it too them every single day.
Thats how spam works.
signed and placed the link at russian forums. We'll win!

hi
sorry to disappoint u but we are not going to get the update to 2.1
why simple business logic the wildfire is out and HTC would be more intested in selling this phone than giving us a update i also have a Win Mobile jade and never got the officiall 6.5 upgrade but due to so some greats cooks in the jade forum i have been using Wm 6.5 for a long time
im 100% sure that we will have 2.1 or 2.2 fully working rom for us very very soon pls see the development section right now 4 great cooks are doing it and it has come out very good and they are also working on the few things not working like camera and FM so guys be a little patient im sure very very soon we will have what we want
Note : i have also signed the petition
Thanks
hari
Im Signed to.
I've signed it. Hope, HTC some day will update Tatto)

PS: signed the petition as well
I think this is in the right topic area, but it was the closest I could find. I'm looking to create an app for android (which I can eventually add to the play store), that contains buttons of a sort in the fact that if you tap on the screen in once place one thing will happen and in another place, something else. Can anyone recommend the software I should use to create this app? Also, what language would be best for it. I think I already know the answer to this, and it may seem like a stupid question, but I don't want to presume and get it wrong. Thanks!
I think you should use android studio that's the best android app development tool used...
