I ran into this issue with my G1, and the workarounds were kludgy at best. is there any possibility of getting the HTC Dialer from say - the droid eris - on the nexus one? I had it with my g1 on the rogers rom, but lost some key functionality(for me anyways). Since the nexus one isn't carrier specific, I'm going to assume that there aren't going to be too many roms floating around.
So does anyone else feel like this is a HUGE miss on htc's part? The android dialer is 'ok', but it's so much easier to dial the first 2 or 3 letters of someone's first and last name and have it pop up in a list rather than go to my favorite tabs and scroll up and down looking for who i want to call.
Granted, this is google's baby, so it's free of outside software, but come one. They can't honestly think the shipped android dialer is better...could they?
I'd love to hear someone chime in and say that they've got it running, but seeing as how the htc frameworks are rooted incredibly deep into the os, i'll assume that's a no-go. I'll settle for some feedback though. Does anyone miss this feature?
No, the android 2.1 dialer is way better than HTC's version.
Tip: You can search for users in the general search tool. Just press the search button, and start typing the name. A lot faster than browsing through the contact list.

Superdial doesn't work on 2.1 either
I'd been using the free app superdialer from the market for this same functionality. Unfortunately it isn't working with the 2.1 contacts list quite yet
t9 contact search on the dialer itself is indispensable. I don't know why this isn't part of the stock dialer.

Better ? And in which way because I can't see it ?
Try StarContact
I agree with the OP. I don't understand why Google doesn't offer T9 support on the default dialer. It is in my top 5 frustrations with Android.
That said, I've been using StarContact (in the market) since it first came out for the G1. It works on the Nexus as well. The HTC dialer is still better, and I loved it when I had the Rogers rom on my G1. Too bad that rom stopped at 1.5.
spelldial from market works with 2.1 now and is amazing.
Start asking your questions in the right sub-forum (Q&A) (Theme) or even in (General), or simply search.......This isn't a developmental subject, Thank you.
Final result will be a ban for you up too 3 days.

Rule that apply:
1. Search before posting
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search function with google' in the menu above each and every page in the forum.
its still here lol
yup. missing that t9 capability that's nice in the htc dialer... the android one seems rather empty of features...
I'm getting really sick of all of the people who won't post their questions in the right forum. Also, I'm sick of people asking how to get HTC proprietary apks to work on the Nexus. If I can get a dump of a sense UI on 2.0 or later with the right screen resolution I will port it. Until then, you can't get HTC apps to work on the Nexus. So quit asking, please.

What he said.
Also, turn off "Web Search" and "Music" in settings for the Google Search
widget, and you'll have a very fast, handy way of getting into contacts from
the home screen. Turning off "Web Search" only turns off Web Suggestions btw.
Type in whatever you want and hit enter and it'll take you to the browser.
PS: Yes, this is the wrong section, but this had to be said
Well I think a ban is a bit harsh. It would take less time to just move the thread and close it vs posting a huge post... which can be equally wasteful. Being a new upcoming N1 owner and new to Android, all of this is new to me as well. I think the Development forum would be accurate IMO.
Anyway. Good thing this thread wasn't deleted because it has some useful information. My neighbor has a N1 and it was one thing that I noticed it lacked. SpellDial looks like a good fix until Google adds this functionality in the stock dialer. Also, good info on the Google Search options, I'll try that too.
An app called dial one brings this. It's free in the market and works excellent.

Hey everyone - now that many people are getting the HD (through the post, shop, stealing, whatever) I was wondering what programs that people are using.
If possible, please also state what the app does. eg;
Coreplayer - multiple-format video player.
Also, please post in Beards' topic with version numbers, screen resolutions, etc!

What we don't want to end up having is two topics with members posting what works in this topic but not in the other ~ which after all is what the other topic is all about.

Jon,
All you need do is go to the topic and ask......
Yes, the topic does list software titles working/not working but there's nothing wrong is posting anything specific about a specified program.
In fact I personally would recommend it.... The more information available is so much better.

This all stems from the fact software is a total mess on windows mobile - even looking at the biggest sites like clickgamer and handandgo none of them have support for the HD yet. As soon as microsoft bring out their software store the better - that's one thing apple got very very right with the iphone.

one major problem and handicap windows mobile will have over the iphone.
The mobile osx is only one device (iphone), so it is a lot easier for developers to create and optimise software for the device, as for wm the developers have to think about the many different devices, thus full optimisation isnt really possible, that is why not all programs will run on all devices.
cor blimey - didn't mean to start anything off here, sorry!
The thread of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442663 is fantastic, and very much appreciated.
If I ever catch up with you guys who have been playing with WM for years, and come across an unlisted app that works, please be assured that I will add to it
However - as a noob, short of Googling each and every one of them to find out what they do (ok, some are pretty obvious!), I have no idea which fall into the categories of "kinda vital" through to "dead useful if you want to do something dead specific".
What I was really hoping for in this thread (and I guess supersquash in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446128 and Philo25 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=445543) was a sort of 'starter for 10'.
Looks like between the various posts we're getting there though, so MANY thanks to everyone
Well I've never really gone out of my way to install anything on my Touch Elf, so this was pretty new to me too. I've been getting the hang of it though.
I've installed:
Advanced Config (changes various hidden options),
Capsure (screen capture utility),
Coreplayer (video player),
Klaxon (alarm),
Total commander (better than File Manager),
SPB Mobile Shell (makes the Today screen look completely different),
iFonz (makes the Today screen look like the iPhone).
Those are all easily found using Google.
Nice one Sir - good to see there's a few of us in the same boat!
sounds like a good starter list - now I just need to start Googling where to get these from...
LOL - wife's gonna love me for the next few weeks...

Is there an XDA forum browser-type of app for the G1 that anyone's made?
If so, where can I find it?
Just curious because it's a bit taxing to have to open up Browser/Steel and navigate from there... I guess I'm just lazy though.
Mods, if this is in the wrong subforum I apologize, it seemed like it was in the right place to me
umm bookmarks? im happy my g1 has such a nice web browser.
I don't think one has been made yet, but I'll second the need for it. A site like XDA just isn't very readable when you have to pan multiple times to finish a sentence.
really? how do you have such a problem? i use the default browser or sometimes opera and its readable and speedy even on EDGE. do you have bad eyes?
A nice low/zero graphics forum skin would be good. That way it would work for the WM users too.
I'm sure there'll be one already out there for vbulletin.
Probably not for the development section though, this topic.

i have the browser autofit and its ok, but the links on the top i have to pan acrossed, plus clicking search and your notifications has posed issues for me in the past, xdas forum isnt 100% g1 browser friendly at the moment, so some small app to browse xdas threads would be great, especially if it listed the threads kind of like when in the market you see different sections there for different types of apps, have the different android threads, and then in there be able to scroll down and maybe even have the app notify you via the notification bar of a new post rather than via email, just an idea
i definately agree with an app for this
wouldn't the site itself have to make a mobile specific version like many sites do for the iphone (and the G1 sometimes)?

Hey! thats on reason why this is my favorite forum software.
PDA
Post this in the apps and games section. This is the development section.
Anyway we can just expand on the PDA forum view?
PDA View
I've set up a mobile version of AndroidClubhouse. It automatically detects when someone accesses the forums through a mobile device, and defaults them top a special mobile template.....its not perfect, but it works much better than trying to scroll a full forum.. If A mod or Admin from XDA wants to hit me up, I'll link them what they need to make a G1 friendly version.
Once again, sorry mods for making the job more of a hassle and putting it in the wrong subforum
I only have Edge where I live so the browser takes a while to load up, it takes longer to pan around and such and you can't really use the browser very well if you only have one hand available (a lot of my texting/emailing/browsing takes place while I walk) but then again that's just me.
If you're going on the site from the browser though, you have to type it in the address bar or go to bookmarks and click on it. For us lazy people, it would be easier to just click to open an app and you're already there. Lol

A proper tutorial for changing splash1 - DONE
A proper tutorial for boot animations -- including all the ins and outs of image creation/format, programs that are used, and a more complete description of desc.text and how to use it.
I'm all for helping out on those as well pm if anyone would like to exchange info before creating a nicely formatted thread based how to. I'll prolly drop in to chat at some point when I get time too.
PS: I think we should start putting our how-to threads in the general section to avoid people posting randomness in the development section. Since at that point we should be doing minimal development anyway and development related conversation could still take place in the proper forum. Also this could be put in the general forum once people catch on.

now that we have root has anyone taken a shot at a skin for eris? maybe port some of the wicked cool stuff they have working on the hero side? tons of notification bars, clocks, rosie scrollers...and so much more...just excited to see where our devices can go.

AOSP is the Android Open Source Project, which is the latest open version of Android, Codenamed Eclair at this time. Its roughly the same as Android 2.1 release.
My Requests
All HTC Widgets including the new ones from the desire/ legend (Friendstream, RSS Reader, Today in History etc.)
Re-skinned Sense Bottom Bar (Some Hero Roms have a rectangular one rather than the curved one we have)
Speed/ Battery Optimization
speech to text
A larger camcorder resolution would be nice, at least the resolution the phone runs in. Also an overclocked processor.
Could anyone see about Using Dialer One as the default dialer app? Like when you press "PHONE", Dialer One comes up instead? That would be great.
Well, it's more than just questions.
I have the HD2 and I really enjoy it. Think it's a great piece of hardware. WM6.5 gets the job done for the most part, but I can understand some of the concerns with the OS. It's good to hear that you guys are already working on WM7 and the port to this phone!
Truth is, I put my coin in google's corner, so I'm hoping that Android finds its way into the HD2 via T Mobile.
I'm a bit tech savy, been involved with computer animation and can build computers as well. I thought I ask about the learning curve when it comes to development on PDA's such as mine. With the drop of Android, I flirted with the idea of learning code.
Is Android Linux based?
You guys hear anything about Android getting a port to this phone? I've done the google search and can only find the sprint version of HD2 with Android installed. That does nothing for TMobile customers.
I read up a bit on XDA and they appear legit. My concern is code being used for identity theft. Anyone have bad experiences with XDA and the software that is released here for share? Does the software under go some sort of QA before it's provided for download?
I have no problem with donations, trust is what earns my donations...fair enough, right?
Ultimately, I really like this phone and look forward to further enhancing it...I hear XDA is the place to be!
Thanks guys/gals.
FAQ's and sticky threads are your friend as is google.
Try reading abit, get a feel for the site.. Then ask..
Yes Winmo7 is being ported to the touch HD, though at the moment it's sluggish due to lack of graphical acceleration (and not really something i"m excited by since it doesn't have copy and paste and no multitasking. IMHO it's really more like an iphone/toy meant for none-techy people).
I don't expect an official update/ROM for the HD2 with android to ever be released by htc/tmobile. However, I would be surprised if one wasn't ported by xda from other devices (like nexus/evo 4g).
Yes, android is unix based. (develepment done in java (for upper stuff) and C (for lower stuff)).
Anything you download and install from xda you do so at your own risk. However, I would argue that the risk is minimal (almost none existent) as long as you follow directions and read posts. The only thing that can brick your phone is a failed radio/SPL update/change. Anything else can be cured by a hard reset.

Thick skin...you grouches don't faze me
I've been through the site a bit, what can I say, life outside of the computer caught up and I got a little impatient!
I'm still reading through the forum. Have yet to find an answer to this question.
If I install Android on my HD2 (US), something goes wrong...will I be able to do a hard reset, or reinstall WM6.5?
I really think Android would benefit more out of this hardware. It seems as if everything Unix based always requires less resources and gets the job done!
I also would like to know how I can uninstall these game demos that are eating up space? Will this be a registry edit?
I feel as if Android would FLY on this device. WM6.5 is getting the job done, but it's to late for Microsoft with me. I've used Linux for some time and I just think it's better. Huge supporter of Linux!

oh, no grouches intended (and the "I have a life" excuse is old )
There's no way to install Android on the HD2, currently, that's why you couldn't find on these forums how to uninstall it from the hd2
Game demos were not included in my stock rom, if you're using a customized rom from a carrier, then either you find and delete the relevant files, if that's even possible, or you flash a clean custom rom from the rom dev forums which includes onyl the necessary software... but then again, I know all this info because I found it on the forums

If they allow you to uninstall the games this is how you would go about it:
Go to the settings tab in Sense -> menu(lower right corner) -> all settings -> system -> remove programs.
Now the other option would be to flash your current rom to something faster and less bloated. T-Mobile US Rom Development Forum
I definitely recommend you read the Stickies before going about flashing your phone. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! Would suck if you brick your new HD2 just because you didn't! This is what these forums are for despite what some members might claim.
As for your other questions yes Android is Unix based and is probably going to be available for the HD2 sometime in the future(don't ask when). There's already a dual boot app so when Android becomes available switching between the two operating systems should be a breeze.
Welcome to the forums and enjoy your new phone!
Hi,
A bit irrrelevant to reply here, but I did not any other place. Have been following this forum for quite sometime. Been around with windows mobile app development for sometime. But what really interest me is when people from this forum tweaks Rom image or port to other harware. Here things look quite easy. Is it really easy? I saw one single person tweaking a ROM image and porting to different hardware?
Hope I have not offended anyone.

Epic fail.
one thing that has been alittle pain is how the albums are viewed. i created an album for videos, yet when i view I can't have a name of the file visable, just a thumbnail. that doesn't work well at all. works fine with pictures cuz what you see is what you. videos start with a black screen; becomes a guessing game. am i missing something?
I had my hd2 for 2 months and i love it. But, im getting very disappointed that it's lacking in apps and community support unlike the andriod and iphone os. I see poplur apps that are available for android and iphone but not wm. i am starting to wish i never got the hd2 and really wish i knew about the evo thats coming out soon.
on top of that i see the phone on ebay has really dropped in price to about £270 ($411)
so is it possible to put android on hd2?
Wow

If you did this simple thing you would find that at this time, its not yet possible, HTC have the best group of developers on it but are having some trouble with the porting or something.

On: Let's assume you haven't read the forum rules, thus you wouldn't know about the built in Search function. There`s Google. Why not Google for something (such as "android on hd2")? Like yourself I'm a new HD2 owner. I can understand why you might think there's a lack of apps for our device, when devices like the iPhone have 160,000+ apps. However I've found four different GPS nav apps out there (Igo, CoPilot, TomTom and Garmin), an app to make a flashlight out of your camera LEDs, a registry editor, a voice-dialler, a metal detector, a decent file explorer, a media player etc etc etc. The question needs to be asked, how many media players / file explorers / gps apps do you need on your device? For me, one of each is more than enough. Many of the iPhone apps are just double-ups of the same functionality.
After getting my phone I spent the next week on XDA searching for apps, themes, tweaks and games, trying them out and working out what works and what doesnt.
My HD2 is now running and looking mint, and I've got more games than I know what to do with. As the others in this thread have already pointed out, you do need to take the time and use the search function.
As for support, you couldn't be more wrong - it was the emmense wealth of knowledge of XDA-developers that gave me the confidence to buy the HD2. It will take you time to find the info you're looking for in these forums, but the answers are there, and you'll end up with a superior phone to the iPhone if you're prepared to give it a chance.
Drop me an email on [email protected] if you'd like to know where to find the bits you're after.
Not only he did not serch .. but hes speling sux too. !
This is one of the funniest Android response threads that I've read lmao. At least the repsonses were good natured and not hateful like some other threads have been. And I hope the OP didn't get scared away, he should think of it as his initiation. And Im sure a lot of Senior users had at least one noobie moment in the beginning.
When I had my Shadow/Juno and started modding my first post was "where is the windows folder"
