Can't write to the nexus 7 internal - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For some reason I cannot move files via Windows 7 file explorer to the Nexus. I can and have done this on every other mobile device that I've had before. What's the difference? Why can't I place pics and videos on it?

A few more details would be super helpful to give you a good answer. Start with if you are running a custom ROM and what if anything you have tried to solve the problem.
When you plug in your usb look under settings - storage and see if there is the option to mount storage.

For some reason, now it's letting me even though I didn't change anything. Mods can delete this if they want. And thank you ezas for your reply.

Glad you got it sorted out.

In my limited experience using MTP (rooted stock N7 4.2.2 + Win 7 x64), what seems to work well is:
- copying files FROM the N7 which were already in the /sdcard mount point when the N7 last booted,
- copying files TO the N7 into a folder which already existed inside the /sdcard mount point when the N7 last booted.
(I should also point out that moving files this way seems to be 5-7 times faster than using "adb push" or "adb pull")
What seems to only work sporadically is trying to copy or write to things which were "recently created" in the /sdcard mount point. For instance, if you generate a large set of files using Android, you won't be able to find them from the PC until a seemingly random ? amount of time later. Similarly, if you create a folder on the N7 (let's say by using a file manager) with the intent of pushing some files there from the PC, you won't see that folder show up in a reasonable amount of time.
This behavior actually does make sense - in principle, it is impossible to allow instantaneous write access to a file system from two independent hosts without running risks of filesystem corruption. In previous versions of Android, external SD cards could be accessed using USB Mass Storage drivers, but only exclusively by either the Android device or the PC - never at the same time. The SD card had to be unmounted from Android in order to be seen by the PC.
But, what is curious is the delays involved. I wanted to do something similar to this the other day (copying a nandroid backup from the PC to a "new" folder on the N7), and thought that by correctly disconnecting from the PC followed by reconnecting to the PC would allow the newly-created folder to "show up" via MTP on the PC. No such luck however; I needed to reboot the N7 for that to happen.
Bottom line is that MTP will work (and quickly, too! - better than 10 MB/sec) - but only with the above limitations in mind. When in doubt, reboot the N7.

[Q] USB unplugging

One more question to you guys - when I connect a USB flash stick to my Iconia, it flashes its LED a lot. I copy what I need using Astro or whatever and want to remove it. However, I noticed that if I remove the stick while its LED is still flashing (= it's still in use), the tablet will not wake up on the first power-button press after it goes to sleep for the first time after this unplugging and that it won't recognize the USB stick anymore before I restart the tablet. The only way around this, I found, is to wait for the ~2sec window of LED not flashing to remove the stick. Anyone else had this issue? And if so, how do you get around it? Is there a way to unmount the flash drive easily? Perhaps a widget or so?
Thanks y'all
I noticed the same thing when using an USB. I just wait until it stops rapid flashing before removing.

I just noticed this major issue yesterday. If i leave my USB flash drive in the device and go on hibernation mode, the next time I wake it up the USB flash drive will keep flashing as if it is reading the drive. As it turns out, it is actually deleting files. I've run several tests to confirm this. Has anyone else had this issue? It's impossible to get a hold of Acer tech support.

I have been having a similar problem with my A500 seemingly deleting files. I have been using File Manager HD to transfer files between my external SD, internal SD, and my USB flash drive. I began noticing files disappearing during transfers to or from the USB drive, or ending up empty sometimes when they would paste into a new location.
I had an occurrence recently moving an MKV file from internal storage over to the USB. In the middle of the transfer the File Manager HD screen went blank, then showed my USB drive as empty. I exited out of that and came back, it showed all the files back in the USB, except the new video file was showing 0kb in size. It had lost the entire file during the transfer, and it was no longer in the original location internally. This leads me to believe it may not be an issue with the USB, but with File Manager HD. (So far I have lost 3 complete seasons of Big Bang Theory as well as many movies and personal work documents.)
I began running transfer tests using Root Explorer and so far I have had 0 issues similar to those encountered with File Manager HD. I have moved several MKV and other files back and forth at will with Root Explorer and so far, 100% success.
I would recommend if you are using File Manager HD, tread lightly for the time being to see if that may be your issue as well. Or just move important files with Root Explorer.
For the flashing issue - some flash drives don't have a light (we'll ignore them).
Other have a light that's ON all the time, as if to show it's got power (bloody useless!)
Others flash their light when the drive is being accessed (read/write).
If your drive flashes, it's safe to assume you should NOT take it out - something is accessing the files, either reading, cataloguing, or writing.
I don't know is the A500, or HC, caches writes like windows does, but it MIGHT, and pulling the drive when it's flushing the cache will KILL the file (Probably both - the file being moved from and the destination file as well).

the previous update didn't kill the tablet because it was rooted. And always have the option to unroot before taking an update, if you want to be extra precautious.

[Q] Way to access mounted SD card through windows?

As the title suggest, looking to see if its possible to read/write to the mounted sd card while its plugged into the Iconia Tab from my Windows file manager.
about 4 months ago i found an old Sandisk sansa at work, no one claimed it so the manager in charge of lost and found gave it to me tonight. Its a fairly old model, but it had an 8gig Transcend micro sdhc in it. its loaded with nearly 7 gigs of music. Id like to back up the contents and then wipe the card.
Also, is there a way to test the cards read/write speeds from the tab? i saw Sd Tools but it only tries to speedtest the internal memory with no option for switching to the external_sd.
Or, am i going to have to buy one of those little card readers for USB slots?
@Grimcreaper - you could look at this method I posted back in July. It's simple and it works. But I'll be honest for simplicity I prefer using a usb card reader, I know it's a nuisance taking the sd card in and out but virtually nothing can go wrong while you are using it.
Try this simple method
For anyone who wants to see the contents of their sd card on their PC and be able to copy/transfer files from one to the other, why not give this a try, it is very simple and works for my A500.
Before you start you need your A500 to be rooted and you need "USB Mount All version 1.3" from the Market cost $1.99
(1) Have your PC switched on, don't connect your A500 yet but switch the A500 on.
(2) Run USB Mount All and you will see your sd card as a "Device" named "ext_sdcard".
(3) Press the tab "Mount" next to your ext_sdcard. You will see two messages "Mount has been granted Superuser permission" and "Device successfully mounted".
(4) Press the "Menu" tab in the top Right hand corner of the screen, this opens a small box entitled "Settings". Press on "Settings" and you get 3 options, make certain all 3 options are ticked, ticking them if they are not. (The important thing is to have "Mount on Bootup" ticked"). Press the Back Arrow twice to get back to Home Page or where ever you started from.
(5) Re-boot the A500 and after it is back running connect it to your PC using mini usb connector.
(6) Now check your PC and open Windows Explorer, you will find under your A500 Device most of the folder/directories that are in /mnt/sdcard (which isn't all that relevent to this) BUT importantly you will find a folder/directory entitled "ext_sdcard" which for those of you who noticed is the exact name that "USB Mount All" called your sd card.
(7) Now use Windows Explorer to copy and paste whatever you want into the "ext_sdcard" folder.
(8) Please note that when you start to copy files you will get up a warning box stating "Do you want to copy XXXXX to your device?". You are given 2 choices (1) No skip this file or (2) Yes.
(9) Put a tick in the box at the bottom Left and click on "Yes".
(10) When finished safely disconnect your A500 from your PC and re-boot your A500.
(11) After re-boot go back into "USB Mount All", chose top Right menu and settings box and remove the tick from the 3rd option "Mount on Bootup". Each time you are going to copy, move or delete files first of all put the tick back in the 3rd box and when you're done take it out.
Your Done. If you use any File Explorer to look at /mnt/external_sd you will see all the files residing on your sd card including those you've just copied
DroidExplorer
Just wait for or load one of the 3.2 based roms...
Thank you guys for your answers
Yes you can!
I'm using the virtuous galaxy room and it's under the storages fileĀ» sdĀ» mmcblk1 and there you go. Way easier than pulling the card out every two seconds
@Grimcreaper - Further to what I originally posted, I have to apologise and endorse what "verdigny" posted. "DroidExplorer" is IMO the best and easiest way of achieving your goal. I must blame an early onset of Alzh or alternatively too many visits to the bottle for forgetting that I in fact have DroidExplorer on my PC and it does everything you want so easily. Back in July when I posted my screed I hadn't seen or downloaded DroidExplorer and that is why I worked out that painfully long and convoluted system.
Thanks again for more info would have responded sooner but ive been stuck working some killer hours right before my vacation kicks in.
Another question, anyone know how to test the speed of the micro sd card?
I found 1 app but it only works for phones i think as it only shows the tabs internal memory with no options for doing an external sd card source, cant remember what its called as i uninstalled it
trying to find out if its worth using on my tab or if its to slow.
Gonna edit this again, appearently i didnt fix it. BusyBox doesnt want to work on my tablet now. says its not rooted and wont install it. so im lost
Went into SU and had it "forget" the busybox installer, but its bringing up a lot of things it didnt the first time i installed it..
Is there anything to worry about with an install of busybox? is it easy to remove if i need to for updating the tablet or anything once i remove SU access? all of these warnings have me a bit scared since im a total noob with android devices but being able to access the sd card constantly through the tablet from windows would make things a lot easier
@Grimcreaper - can't help with sd card speed, a bit out of my league. As far as "BusyBox" is concerned may I make the following comments. I presume each of the following statements are true.....(1) you are using the stock/standard Rom and Kernel (2) you have rooted by using Iconia Root [ v1.1 or v1.2 or v1.3] (3) you are on Honeycomb 3.1 (4) you use "RootChecker" free from MktPlace (5) you used "BusyBox Installer" free from MktPlace.
I am not an expert but in your position my "path" would have been......(1) Root the A500 (2) Apply BusyBox Installer (3) Install RootChecker. Assuming Rooting goes ok you should have no problem installing BusyBox and then use RootChecker which in it's "Advanced" mode will confirm your Root was successful and will also confirm successful installation of BusyBox. By installing BusyBox, apart from anything else, you gain access to certain system/scripting/"linux type" commands such as 'cat' 'chmod' 'chown' 'clear' 'dd' 'egrep' 'ping' etc.etc.
If you need "Iconia Root" I can point you to the XDA page or can attach it to a followup post, but reading your post again I'm presuming you already have it. A small point, when it comes to updating OTA updates from Acer I found on the last update from 3.01 to 3.1 that after restoring certain "bloat" files I was able to update without uninstalling Root and at the conclusion of the update Root was still operative.
Hope I havn't missed your point and wasted your time with a load of drivel.
Quick addition - Do a search in Market for "software data cable" and look at the first 2 free apps. Haven't tried them myself but might interest you.
Checking out rootchecker now, everything else on the list is accurate.
According to rootchecker i am rooted, which i did using the iconia root 1.3 i believe some time ago to get the netflix stuff working by backing up replacing the libmonv file.
It also shows Busybox as correctly installed too, version 1.18.4

HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.
The trial version of HD Tach measures the sequential read speed (at various points on the device), the random access speed, interface burst speed and CPU utilization of the drive. The registered version adds sequential write testing.

Problem with Windows seeing contents of "Internal Storage" on N7

Hey guys, I tried some searches for this but haven't seen anything similar to the problem I have.
When I plug my n7 into my PC, sometimes I can't see whats on the device. The "Internal Storage" will have a disk icon and say "Local Disk" which then won't open or it will just show that there are no folders on it. Sometimes it will show the folders but when I try to open a folder it is empty. For example opening the folder "Titanium Backup" it will be empty, even when I just ran a backup. Then sometimes it will show the files in there, but if I try to copy them out it will make a folder "TitaniumBackup" on my PC but it will just be empty. If the files show up on the n7 I can copy them out as single files but copying the entire folder just leaves an empty folder. Sometimes it will copy part of it, for example a 300mb backup will copy 150 mb of files over.
Sometimes when I try to drop a file onto my n7 it says "cannot communicate to the device it is busy" or something close to that.
Regardless of which issue I am having if I unplug the USB and plug it back in I will get one of the other random issues. I don't know if this is a windows driver issue or if my unit is defective. It seems to be more reliable on stock ROMs but I haven't found if that is 100% true.

There is a problem with the Windows MTP file listing not being current with the actual files on the Nexus. Turning the Nexus off and then back on before connecting to the PC seems to help.
Thanks for the replies, the ROM does seem to have some effect on it, but I so rarely try to copy files that I am not going to base my ROM choice on that. Just really annoying, I may try that app and rebooting isn't too hard. I'll report back after the next time i try it.

[Q] Why Windows Explorer crash when renaming file through MTP?

I can copy large and multiple small files TO the Nexus 4 no problem with MTP.
Copying FROM the device to PC is always finicky. I resorted to qtADB for that.
But whenever I tried to rename a file or folder thru MTP, Explorer hangs and not responding. I have to kill it via Task Manager to gain back control.
It's getting really annoying picking up my phone just to rename a folder.
For what its worth, I use Windows 8 64-bit, Nexus 4 with AOKP build 2, franco.kernel r68-test.
Any body can help me?
Thanks in advance, guys.

I don't think I have your problem but regarding recovering from Explorer hanging (which I have experienced before for x other reason with MTP) I find that the hanging will stop once the phone is unplugged. That should be a less intrusive way than using the Task Manager. Let me know if that method works for you too.

But when I want to copy, let say 5GB worth of FLACs, Wi-Fi is just too slow.

On my previous LG Optimus L7, Explorer crash when I copy multiple files to the device. I had to resort with the ol' and trusty method of USB card reader.
It's alot better on the Nexus 4, though. Copying files to the device is all good. Copying from the device and renaming files are where the problem lies.
I hate this. At least iTunes is somewhat reliable for the iPhone.
Granted, MTP is necessary for phones without microSD slot, because Android use EXT file system which not readable by Windows. To allow USB Mass Storage mode, the manufacturer has to partition the phone storage, one is EXT for Android system and apps, the other is FAT32 for user data. We also hate that configuration, since it will limit app storage.
But I still hate how unreliable MTP is.

I have same problem with my Galaxy S3.
I looks like that the root of problem is Windows 8 64-bit. I didn't have such problem when I used it under Windows 7 64-bit.
To me, it took more than 20 minutes to rename a file. Well.. As you expected, Explore was not responding.
However, once finishing renaming successfully, there was no "not responsing" to rename files until detatching my phone.
windows 8 is definitely the problem, I have all kinds of issues between android phones and Win8, where I never had any issues before "upgrading" to win8. I wish i had a solution but i dont. Maybe it would be easier to rename the files using a native file explorer, if you are rooted.

hi guys,
i know this is an old thread..
i was just curious to know if someone has already got a solution to this.
i can confirm, that this has to do with windows 8-64bit.
i had never experienced any problems with MTP and windows before windows 8-64bit.
Sorry to bump such an old thread but did you guys solve the problem? Did you find some kind of workarround?
Thanks in advance
I can't believe this is still a thing. Absolutely infuriating.
Yeah, I would've hoped this would be fixed by now. The only work around I found is just to create the folder name you want on Windows and drop it into Android. Then use Android to delete the old folder.
If you're moving old files to the new folder from Android. Then you want to use Android file explorer to move the files you want to it. If you use Windows to do it, it's going to take a while, as if you're copying new files from Windows to Android again.
Any word if Lollipop would fix this issue?

I don't have a complete solution but I've discovered a workaround. When renaming a file, rather than clicking outside of the text area after typing the new name, instead press enter to confirm and it doesn't lock up (in my case). Been having the same issue with my S3 previously and S5 currently ever since I've used MTP.
I have this problem only one solution for me is F2FS. But I'm on FlexOS with OnePlus and it does not support F2FS
Guys, the problem still continues.
I try to connect my G4 in Win 7 and 8.1 then renaming the new folder, but it still makes my Win Explorer not responding

[Q] USB Mass storage?

I am sick of MTP USB connection and I want to know if there's any way to use normal mass storage.
Today I tried to copy nandroid backups to my PC and I can't.. It just won't copy my files. (Windows 7)
adb pull will recursively grab the contents of a remote folder if you use a trailing /
e.g.
C:\foo> cd MyBackups
C:\foo\MyBackups> adb pull /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/device-serial-num/
You may need to move your CWM/TWRP backups out of /data/media and into /data/media/0 if you are using lightly-rooted stock (as ro.secure = 1 and therefore the adb shell does not get root privs)
Other alternatives are mounting a drive or USB stick via OTG and shuttling files.
I use Win 7 Pro x64, and it is my impression that MTP seemed to behave better after I completely uninstalled the Google & XDA Universal Naked USB drivers, and used only the Asus N7 USB driver for everything (with a .inf file hack). TBH, though, I don't know why that would be the case though, as a generic MS driver handles the MTP connection. Perhaps 4.2.2 fixed something, I dunno - MTP seems to work OK for me now.
good luck
Thank you, that helped.

(TL;DR I don't know)
I've seen similar reports before, but I haven't experienced it myself, nor have I followed the issue. Do some more searching on this forum, I guess. I don't know if it's custom recoveries that have been causing that behavior, or if it has something to do with the ROMs being flashed, or whether it is a 4.1.x/4.2.x multi-user conversion issue. There probably should be some traffic in the custom recovery threads about it.
I've been using TWRP and sticking with lightly-rooted stock and haven't observed such behavior. About the closest thing that I experienced was that initially TWRP put its stuff at /data/media/TWRP, but after I manually moved it to /data/media/0/TWRP, it seemed happy enough with that (and started putting new Nandroid backups into the moved folder location). That makes it easy enough to get backup copies off the tablet using MTP, even though it is irritating that timestamps don't get preserved doing things either of these ways.
good luck
