FroYo Freezes fix

Use with 2.0.54 only, root is not yet available with 2.0.71
disclaimer: swap IS evil, you don't want it! Swap is a dirty workaround for crappy hardware (well somekind of) ... Don't complain if you put a swapfile on your internal memory (the 8 or 16GB flash disk) and it will stop working. Swap read and write like hell, so if you want to try it, please use an external disk, like usb, or better: micro SD. And of course i'm not responsible for anything ...
a) download http://hitme.resetbutton.de/priv/swapfiles.zip
b) unzip it somewhere on your PC
c) pick what you want ... i prepared a 128, 256 and 512MB swapfile in it. It might be smart to start with 256MB
d1) connect to your PC and use the dropdown area (on the Archos notification bar) to enable file transfers
d2) on my system the sd card is mounted on windows as "removable disk" .. the internal is A101IT, so if you have a sd card use "removable disk"
d3) transfer the file (the size you want, or all) to your Archos device, as i said: internal memory might be a bad idea, use a sd card
d4) on a windows system use the "safe remove hardware" or whatever it's called and unmount the disk form the archos. After that, on the archos at the orange Android screen: click the button
e) use z4root to root your device temporarily ( you can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953 or google for z4root)
f) use the first option in z4root! a permanent root will not work (at the moment). If it's not working: enable USB debugging AND connect it to a PC
g) download a terminal if you haven't so far. Search in the market for "terminal emulator"
h) start the terminal and enter: su
at the first time you will get a request that you really want it. If you don't get it: root didn't work, happens sometimes. Power off your device and try again at e)
i) locate where you put your swapfile ... it should be /mnt/storage/sdcard, or if you don't have a sd card: /mnt/storage
j) go into the directory by typing: cd /mnt/storage/sdcard ... or cd /mnt/storage (without a sdcard)
you can list the content of the directory with: ls
k) type: swapon swap256
or the file you copied (swap128, swap256, swap512)
l) type: free
you should now see that you have swap memory
m) report back which file works best for you!
This will now work until you reboot your device. If you do: start again at e) .. of course you don't have to download z4root or the terminal again, so it's:
root with z4root
start terminal and enter su
goto the directory where the swapfile is (cd something)
swapon swap256 ( or whatever you used)
control with: free
done
WARNING: if you use a swapfile, which is described here, you can't use a usb connection to copy files without doing this:
start the terminal, enter: su
go to the directory where the file is ( cd /mnt/storage/sdcard or /mnt/storage) and do:
swapoff swap256 (or whatever you used)
This mini howto is for a swapFILE ... the advantage is that you don't have to make new partitions on your sdcard, but it might be a little bit slower than a swapPARTITION. If i have more time i will wikify this and extend it with the partition part ...

You can only use this while temp rooted (to use the command swapon), also, there should be NO reason why you should be rebooting anyway...

I tried this successfully in my Archos 101 but using the Internal Storage, not the SD card itself. I ran it for 3 hours straight opening very heavy stuff. It solves the stability issue, now my 101 doesn't hang when I open too much stuff.
My only concern is that the swap file operation may shorten the lifespan of the media because such media usually has a finite number or write operation cycles to it.

Just enabled a swap512 on a spare sdcard i had. Initial impressions is... WOW this thing flies! Apps are just popping open now with no lag and flicking screen to screen is almost instant. Will report back on the stability after I've had a chance to play with it but THANK YOU OP!!

Use a fairly good MicroSD card with it, high read/write cycles on it. It will last longer then.

Wow this worked great. My system is flying.
A put the 512 on an 8gb sd card.
I opened dolphin with 8 tabs, angry birds seasons paused after playing no problem. Then opened regular angry birds and played that with all others still running. No issue.
I also have music playing in the background.
I opened the my piano ap and played that with all others in the background.
Works just perfectly.

I'm going to try this too... once I got the archos rooted again... z4root isn't very reliable to be honest. Currently it's not working 90% of the time. But that's another issue in another thread.

Working fine too... I'm using launcher pro, started some apps, played angry birds seasons and yet no freeze.
Firefox beta was unusable without swap, now working like a charme. I'm checkin on Dolphin HD next.

Works great, put a 512swap on my 8 gb micro sd and no freezes anymore

because it doesn't run out of memory.

Memory management isn't too good with our stock froyo because it doesn't end applications when it should.

This will not work with the newest firmware as temp root no longer works. However, the improved CPU and memory management should compensate for that.

Not true. I'm on the latest firmware, running Z4Root temp rooted, and swapping 512. Not sure why it'd not working for you guys.
EDIT: I didn't see the latest posted in the forum. I'm still on 2.0.54, not the newest

[Q] USB unplugging

One more question to you guys - when I connect a USB flash stick to my Iconia, it flashes its LED a lot. I copy what I need using Astro or whatever and want to remove it. However, I noticed that if I remove the stick while its LED is still flashing (= it's still in use), the tablet will not wake up on the first power-button press after it goes to sleep for the first time after this unplugging and that it won't recognize the USB stick anymore before I restart the tablet. The only way around this, I found, is to wait for the ~2sec window of LED not flashing to remove the stick. Anyone else had this issue? And if so, how do you get around it? Is there a way to unmount the flash drive easily? Perhaps a widget or so?

I noticed the same thing when using an USB. I just wait until it stops rapid flashing before removing.

I just noticed this major issue yesterday. If i leave my USB flash drive in the device and go on hibernation mode, the next time I wake it up the USB flash drive will keep flashing as if it is reading the drive. As it turns out, it is actually deleting files. I've run several tests to confirm this. Has anyone else had this issue? It's impossible to get a hold of Acer tech support.

I have been having a similar problem with my A500 seemingly deleting files. I have been using File Manager HD to transfer files between my external SD, internal SD, and my USB flash drive. I began noticing files disappearing during transfers to or from the USB drive, or ending up empty sometimes when they would paste into a new location.
I had an occurrence recently moving an MKV file from internal storage over to the USB. In the middle of the transfer the File Manager HD screen went blank, then showed my USB drive as empty. I exited out of that and came back, it showed all the files back in the USB, except the new video file was showing 0kb in size. It had lost the entire file during the transfer, and it was no longer in the original location internally. This leads me to believe it may not be an issue with the USB, but with File Manager HD. (So far I have lost 3 complete seasons of Big Bang Theory as well as many movies and personal work documents.)
I began running transfer tests using Root Explorer and so far I have had 0 issues similar to those encountered with File Manager HD. I have moved several MKV and other files back and forth at will with Root Explorer and so far, 100% success.
I would recommend if you are using File Manager HD, tread lightly for the time being to see if that may be your issue as well. Or just move important files with Root Explorer.

For the flashing issue - some flash drives don't have a light (we'll ignore them).
Other have a light that's ON all the time, as if to show it's got power (bloody useless!)
Others flash their light when the drive is being accessed (read/write).
If your drive flashes, it's safe to assume you should NOT take it out - something is accessing the files, either reading, cataloguing, or writing.
I don't know is the A500, or HC, caches writes like windows does, but it MIGHT, and pulling the drive when it's flushing the cache will KILL the file (Probably both - the file being moved from and the destination file as well).

You guys/gals need to catchup on (?) in the DEV section more often

the previous update didn't kill the tablet because it was rooted. And always have the option to unroot before taking an update, if you want to be extra precautious.
or just wait till Acer fixes the issue..

[Q] Custom ROM bugs? Help!

Hi.
I'm running SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.1, and I've observed several bugs. I need to know if the bugs are the fault of the ROM (and thus something I should take up with the ACS developers) or if they're my fault due to something I'm doing wrong.
1) I use folders on my LauncherPro* homescreens to organize apps. For this example, I'll use my Games folder. In it, all the games except 1 are installed onto my microSD card. After I drag the icons to the folder the first time, they are fine. However, after a reboot, the icons of the apps installed to my microSD card that are in folders change to the generic Android green/white icon. The apps still load properly, and the icons appear fine in the App drawer.
*LauncherPro is included as the only homescreen in this ROM.
2) I'm having an odd issue with Plants vs. Zombies. It loads to the main screen, and I can manage the player names, but after I click to start the adventure, it locks up with the Adventure button depressed. The main screen music also dies. No FC/wait dialog appears. I have to press the Home button to get out of it. PvZ is unplayable in this condition. Rebooting does not help, nor does formatting /cache or Dalvik-cache in custom recovery.
3) JuiceDefender Ultimate tells me in the log that it cannot toggle 2G/3G data, and that this is likely to be a kernel issue. As far as I know, this reduces the effectiveness of JD.
4) In ClockwodMod Recovery 3.0.0.6, I cannot mount my microSD card for the PC to read/write it. I get "E:Unable to open ums lunfile (no such file or directory)". I've seen posts that indicate this is a bug that was corrected in later versions, but I don't know if the custom ROM I am running is compatible with later versions,or where to find later versions. EDIT: I found CWM 3.0.2.5, and flashed it. It still reports the same error when attempting mount my microSD card for my PC to work with.
5) When I connect the phone's cable to my PC and get the the "Charging/Mass Storage/Tethered" popup and click Mass Storage, and then click "Turn On" at the next screen, it appears to work fine, except that my PC shows no new removable media drives. Sometimes, even though I touched the "Turn On" button, nothing happens. The button does not turn into a spinning wait indicator, nothing.
6) I found a post (that I've since lost track of) that purported to provide instructions to see if journaling was enabled. (I'm already formatted as EXT4). The instructions errored out, apparently because I have the wrong version of tune2fs. I'm not sure how to copy the correct version over, so I flashed the "Journaling On" zip shortly after I re-flashed this ROM. Does EXT4 and journaling stick between ROM re-flashes?

OK can only answer some of these. I heard Launcher Pro can take a little while to read icons from the sd card. You may want to download and try Zeam launcher.
The Plants v Zombies may be a result of overclocking/undervolting. Try it again with no undervolting and your speed set to 1Ghz max and 200 Mhz min.
Not sure why you are mounting the sd card in clockwork. Sounds like either your cable is flaky or you need to reinstall the Samsung drivers to connect your USB. Also try different USB ports and turn USB debugging on. I had to reinstall the drivers for each port on my laptop as it would only recognize my phone in one of them originally.
No, journaling does not carry through other ROM flashes. If you flash a no-journaling ROM, you will have no journal unless you turn it back on. Some can be turned on simply be making a nand backup then immediately restoring it. Others work fine with the journal on flash. And some are more special and need a specific script like Bonsai.

1) you can get a different launcher from the market. I've never had any luck with pushing apps to sd.
2) that's a issue with the game. Try changing your max and min cpu.clocks. If you uved you may be to low.
3)jd is a pos and you don't need it. I go on average of 12-16hrs a day with 3+ hours of screen on. And a synce interval of every hour
4) no versions of cwm on the epic has allowed you to mount your sd to pc for the epic. Cwm was ported to the epic and not created by koush him self so some things are broken.
5) try a different cable and usb ports. This is a known problem even while on a stock rom
6) yes it sticks unless the rom your flashing changes it.

[Q] Boot Loop, help?

IN MY INFINITE WISDOM, I replaced my build.prop with the one from a Motorola Xoom in an attempt to get Sketchbook Pro to show up in the market. Now my tablet is boot looping.
I backed the original up in the same directory, as build.prop.OLD. If I could mount system and replace the file with a PC, I'd imagine that the tablet would work again. How could I do that?
However, THERE IS ANOTHER COMPLICATION! I used the 'Acer Phone Disabler' app to remove the telephony drivers, which means that I cannot flash a rom or the tablet will brick. I'm not sure what this means for Nandroid backups.
The tablet has the leaked stock 3.1 rom installed, it's rooted, and it has Clockworkmod recovery.

Oh god.
I used ADB to pull my build.prop.OLD, renamed it to build.prop, and pushed it back. Now... the tablet boots up, and it shows the Android "Welcome" screen. Clicking the only button available doesn't work. It just highlights as if it is selected, and doesn't do anything when I lift my finger up.
I DO have a Nandroid backup from several weeks ago of the same rom, but from BEFORE I removed the telephony drivers. I am only going to try restoring it as a last resort; does anyone have any ideas? Remember, flashing a rom would result in a brick because I used Acer Phone Disabler. Is a nandroid backup safe?

I'm hoping someone else chimes in here but I am under the impressing that the nandroid backup would override any changes you could make as long as you don't break recovery. As far as my experience goes if you had a backup of your current configuration you could do an "advanced restore" and only restore your "system"

Restoring just system worked! My homescreen is back to stock but all my apps are still installed, so I don't really care. Thanks a bunch, I was so worried.

Help needed for a boot loop
Well as said in the video, i reuse an existing thread about bootloop...
I'm stuck in a bootloop with an iconia A500... but let's look at the steps that got me there...
The First mistake was to answer yes to my friend who asked me to connect his Vodafone k3565 to his iconia A500, but as i read Android was linux based and i did use linux a lot as a student, i didn't even imagine it could go wrong...
Tablet was stating to run :
Android 3.1
Bernel 2.6.36.3-00009-9dddf6f2
Build 4.015.05-EMEA-CUS3
i did root with iconia root 1.3
then added Busybox and a terminal program.
reboot, try a SU and could access the devices
Here is the second mistake... i should have wondered how to restore to normal state before starting, because i don't have any SD card that suit the device ( mine are normal sized ones, you know.. Stamp sized :/ )
Then i got to the thread

and i used an usb key to transfer it to the device, but before applying the files i took a look to them and found 3 of them would overwrite actual system files, so i did a backup of them :
/system/build.prop
/system/etc/apns-conf
/system/bin/rild
and looking at the build.prop i saw differences in the values of the one on the A500 and the one in the package so i decided to get only the missing lines from the new system.zip file and add them to the original file
And here is the 3rd mistake, and i guess the reason of the problem : i did that merge on a windows computer, and i fear it did add those pesky CRLF at the end of lines, turning my build.prop into a build.prob(lem).
I'm not sure, as i didn't check before it was too late.
rebooted and... boot loop, with 1 times out of 2, the little android with yellow triangle and exclamaition mark.
Cried, runned in circles, then looked on forums to find a solution.
Reboot with Power+Volume gives :
"Erasing cache before SD update...
SD update cmd:recovery
--update_package=sdcard:update.zip
Booting recovery kernel image"
Then i get the android with gears for a few seconds, then below him is a bar like the one in the android store when you download a file, then half a second later, again the exclaimation mark.
I also tried plugging a keyboard to hit the home key...
( in fact two : Logitech G110 and trust easy scroll silverline )
no difference, maybe because those are gaming keyboards and they arent loaded soon enough by the tab, or maybe it crashes before keyboard loading.

hoping i could use the USB cable to put the backup files back in place but when i plug the device into the windows host, it recognises an unavailable USB MTP device, whose properties say "Acer iconia tab a500" in the "signaled bus description"(translated from french display, may be something else in english)
I manually force added the Acer ADB interface, but both the devices are unavailable to windows, with a warning sign, stating "this device cannot start (code 10)"
"Adb shell" answers "Error:device not found",which is expected, as windows can't see the devices properly
the strange thing is that, with USB plugged from A500 to PC, the Android with exclaimation stays forever, while without the cable, the system boot-loops
so i'm at this point :
i have a boot looping device, and the backup of the modified files on an USB key, and no way to put them back on device.
I found on the forums a lot of different .imgs that could be put on the /system to reload the device but none with EMEA-CUS3. So if i overwrite the files, i can't go back
I read you need a SD card to patch the device but not all of them work...
And my only computer with a SD slot uses a big one, not micro one, so i also need an adapter to write on the sd card.
Is someone near me (belgium/postcode 4000) having a SD ward working with the device who could lend it or help me doing the job ?

Looking closer at the modem (Vodafone k3565) it has a trap that says "SD card" so i guess i won't need an adapter... still need the reference of a SD card known to work for the restoring.

lists working SD cards, but don't tell with which device. i'd take the guess it applies to the iconia A500 and take the list to the shop to see if anyone is available...

Did you install the Acer USB driver, found here? http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers
You might need to go into device manager after installing and right click/update drivers on the tablet, then manually direct it to the Acer driver folder. That's what I did, then ADB worked.

The First mistake was to answer yes to my friend who asked me to connect his Vodafone k3565 to his iconia A500, but as i read Android was linux based and i did use linux a lot as a student, i didn't even imagine it could go wrong...
Tablet was stating to run :

Bernel 2.6.36.3-00009-9dddf6f2
Build 4.015.05-EMEA-CUS3
i did root with iconia root 1.3
then added Busybox and a terminal program.
reboot, try a SU and could access the devices
Here is the second mistake... i should have wondered how to restore to normal state before starting, because i don't have any SD card that suit the device ( mine are normal sized ones, you know.. Stamp sized :/ )

and i used an usb key to transfer it to the device, but before applying the files i took a look to them and found 3 of them would overwrite actual system files, so i did a backup of them :
/system/build.prop
/system/etc/apns-conf
/system/bin/rild
and looking at the build.prop i saw differences in the values of the one on the A500 and the one in the package so i decided to get only the missing lines from the new system.zip file and add them to the original file
And here is the 3rd mistake, and i guess the reason of the problem : i did that merge on a windows computer, and i fear it did add those pesky CRLF at the end of lines, turning my build.prop into a build.prob(lem).
I'm not sure, as i didn't check before it was too late.
rebooted and... boot loop, with 1 times out of 2, the little android with yellow triangle and exclamaition mark.
Cried, runned in circles, then looked on forums to find a solution.
Reboot with Power+Volume gives :
"Erasing cache before SD update...
SD update cmd:recovery
--update_package=sdcard:update.zip
Booting recovery kernel image"
Then i get the android with gears for a few seconds, then below him is a bar like the one in the android store when you download a file, then half a second later, again the exclaimation mark.
I also tried plugging a keyboard to hit the home key...
( in fact two : Logitech G110 and trust easy scroll silverline )
no difference, maybe because those are gaming keyboards and they arent loaded soon enough by the tab, or maybe it crashes before keyboard loading.

hoping i could use the USB cable to put the backup files back in place but when i plug the device into the windows host, it recognises an unavailable USB MTP device, whose properties say "Acer iconia tab a500" in the "signaled bus description"(translated from french display, may be something else in english)
I manually force added the Acer ADB interface, but both the devices are unavailable to windows, with a warning sign, stating "this device cannot start (code 10)"
"Adb shell" answers "Error:device not found",which is expected, as windows can't see the devices properly
the strange thing is that, with USB plugged from A500 to PC, the Android with exclaimation stays forever, while without the cable, the system boot-loops
so i'm at this point :
i have a boot looping device, and the backup of the modified files on an USB key, and no way to put them back on device.
I found on the forums a lot of different .imgs that could be put on the /system to reload the device but none with EMEA-CUS3. So if i overwrite the files, i can't go back
I read you need a SD card to patch the device but not all of them work...
And my only computer with a SD slot uses a big one, not micro one, so i also need an adapter to write on the sd card.
Is someone near me (belgium/postcode 4000) having a SD ward working with the device who could lend it or help me doing the job ?

i saw in a nearby store ad "Sigma SDHC 4Go" or "Sigma SDHC 8Go", with apparently an adaptor for a normal sized SD slot, can anyone confirm it works or it don't work for sure ?

Looking closer at the modem (Vodafone k3565) it has a trap that says "SD card" so i guess i won't need an adapter... still need the reference of a SD card known to work for the restoring.

The reason "some" SD cards don't work is down purely to formatting. Normally, reformatting them in an Android phone sorts it out. Not always, but normally. Don't worry about the GEN3 stuff too much, it's just regional variations anyway... More important to get the tab working again, no?

Yes i did ( on 2 different computers, just to be sure )...
and still the device is not recognised as "adb device".
Windows shows a "USB MTP Device"
Tried to manually add the "ACER Composite ADB Interface" and "ACER Fastboot Interface" to the installed peripherals, it shows with yellow exclaimation mark, never shows up running.

Without any useable answer about one week later, i did buy a Traxdata 2Gb SD card with adapter ( the cheapest i found with an adapter from micro SD to normal SD ) and flashed with the Emea_Gen3 ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878.
Now the tablet works, but is telling me 4.010.42-COM-GEN1 instead of the previous 4.015.05-Emea-Cus3.
Seems to work correctly, so i go on with the modem connexion.

Can't write to the nexus 7 internal

For some reason I cannot move files via Windows 7 file explorer to the Nexus. I can and have done this on every other mobile device that I've had before. What's the difference? Why can't I place pics and videos on it?

A few more details would be super helpful to give you a good answer. Start with if you are running a custom ROM and what if anything you have tried to solve the problem.
When you plug in your usb look under settings - storage and see if there is the option to mount storage.

In my limited experience using MTP (rooted stock N7 4.2.2 + Win 7 x64), what seems to work well is:
- copying files FROM the N7 which were already in the /sdcard mount point when the N7 last booted,
- copying files TO the N7 into a folder which already existed inside the /sdcard mount point when the N7 last booted.
(I should also point out that moving files this way seems to be 5-7 times faster than using "adb push" or "adb pull")
What seems to only work sporadically is trying to copy or write to things which were "recently created" in the /sdcard mount point. For instance, if you generate a large set of files using Android, you won't be able to find them from the PC until a seemingly random ? amount of time later. Similarly, if you create a folder on the N7 (let's say by using a file manager) with the intent of pushing some files there from the PC, you won't see that folder show up in a reasonable amount of time.
This behavior actually does make sense - in principle, it is impossible to allow instantaneous write access to a file system from two independent hosts without running risks of filesystem corruption. In previous versions of Android, external SD cards could be accessed using USB Mass Storage drivers, but only exclusively by either the Android device or the PC - never at the same time. The SD card had to be unmounted from Android in order to be seen by the PC.
But, what is curious is the delays involved. I wanted to do something similar to this the other day (copying a nandroid backup from the PC to a "new" folder on the N7), and thought that by correctly disconnecting from the PC followed by reconnecting to the PC would allow the newly-created folder to "show up" via MTP on the PC. No such luck however; I needed to reboot the N7 for that to happen.
Bottom line is that MTP will work (and quickly, too! - better than 10 MB/sec) - but only with the above limitations in mind. When in doubt, reboot the N7.
