My Defy is showing its age. It doesn't have USB-on-the-go, its 512 MB RAM is no good for multitasking large apps, 2 GB internal memory was good two years ago but as the apps are getting bigger... And every 4.x ROM I tried is either slow, buggy, sucks my battery dry, or all of the above.
So what's next? Defy+ is not much more than an overclocked Defy and Motorola is a sinking ship anyway.
I'm looking for something with these minimum specs:
Size & weight
Not much bigger than the Defy, because it has to fit comfortably in my jeans, and in my running shorts when I'm jogging.
Max. footprint 115x62 mm, max. weight 130g.
Display resolution
Equal or better than the Defy: 480x852 pixels or more.
Frequencies
Should work in Europe, USA, and Asia, so three 3G frequencies or more.
4G would be nice to have as well, but not essential.
Storage
Should have a microSD card so I can always get at my data, even if the phone breaks.
Android
I don't care what it gets shipped with, as long as there are fast bug-free (no data bugs!) battery-efficient custom 4.x ROMs available. Of course my new phone should be easily flashed back to factory state without any traces of custom boot loaders/menus/etc. left behind.
CPU
At least 1 GHz, more is better.
RAM
At least 1 GB, more is better.
Battery
Battery life should be similar or better to that of a tweaked undervolted Defy. I like to carry a charged spare battery when I travel, so the battery should be replacable.
It looks like replacable batteries and memory cards are on the way out. But the main problem is size, because most new phones look more like a tablet than a phone. Is there anything out there that meets my size restrictions without compromising on specs?
I'm looking for one too.
Desire X ...
It is slim, the battery is not bad comparing to others....
Xperia P seems nice but no micro sd

SO MANY "I WANT TO REPLACE MY DEFY" threads! :banghead:
Honestly I'm quite fine with mine. Don't understand why others experience issues. I'll keep my Defy as long as lord Quarx will continue his awesome work.
Anyway, I guess Sony devices are the best. Pick whatever you like. They're really good with open source.
And please don't make another "I hate my defy and want another phone" thread. We have a device suggestions thread on XDA. Ask these questions there.

That`s amazing.... The man says "what car should i replace my old VW BORA with ... ?
90% answer : Mercedes S Classe, BMW 7er or AUdi A8 ...
90% of people around here must be kids....
I think the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 it's a nice replacement...
It depends alot on what u expect....
I like defy because it`s size...i do not need 2 hands to handle it...
All the other phones are bigger. Defy has the size of a normal 3,5` of any other phone....but it has the display of 3,7`
Also no competition regarding battery it it`s sizes...
For me it is a matter of size and defy will always win...
I gave up an Desire X and an Atrix 4g for a Defy +
Thanx for the suggestions.
The HTC Desire X could be a good Defy replacement if it would fit some more pixels in its 4" screen, but at 400x800 its resolution is no match for the Defy. And it only has two 3G frequencies.
Xperia P & U have lots of 3G frequencies, but Sony likes to waste a lot of space below the display. Even so they only managed to fit in a 1300 mAh battery. You can't even pop a charged spare into an Xperia P unless you bring a screwdriver and kill your warranty. And it looks like Sony hates removable memory cards. With only 16 GB (Xperia P) and 8 GB (Xperia U) internal memory the lack of a microSD slot is definitely a deal breaker.
So I guess I'll keep looking for a Defy replacement a bit longer.
If Motorola would make a 4" version of their RAZR i/M so they could make it a cm shorter, and make the battery removable so you can revive a dead phone with a charged spare battery they'd have a winner.
Check out Xperia V, water and dust proof.... very nice specs and nice design
The best fone ever a nokia 3210 or a 3310 ther battery last ages and it hss greenscreen lmfao

The Sony Xperia SX would be a good model to build on. If Sony adds 1 or 2 mm width and/or thickness to fit a bigger battery, and add european frequencies (it's japanese only now) they'd have a very good Defy replacement.
AW: [Q] Which new phone to replace old Defy?
If mine dies this time I'll buy a new defy.......

Atrix 4G is high-end Defy, but I don't know...on Jeally Bean bad camera, no HWA...IMO bad upgrade for a long time. I really like Motorola Razr M and Xiaomi Mi2. They are little bigger, but I think it's still OK. But what about I really scared is digitizer. If you damaged Defy display, you can buy new digitezer on Ebay for 8$ and replace by yourselve. If you damage Razr M or similar handset, you can buy a new phone :/
Edit: And Motorola make 4" Razr M -> Razr D3.
the defy seems to be showing its age and for the next replacement, perhaps a sony life-proof model or the next motorola successor? moto will be doing some releases later this year i believe.
anyhow, i want a small size and portable phones instead of 5" gigantic screens.
thx.
p.s. how about Sony Xperia V? is it well supported by cyanogenmod?
So, Sony is the way to go?

RAZR M has an edge to edge display design which makes it smaller compared to other phones with same size display. You can easily use it single handedly.
And as far as performance is considered, the KRAIT inside it makes it far better than xperia P or U.
Removable battery needs a little more space, and when every manufacturer is trying to make their device slimmer, I think we'll be seeing more and more of 'unibody' phones so try to cope up with it..

After almost a year of ownership I've decided to upgrade the Arc to the only other phone with a form factor and feel I like, the HTC one S.
I really wanted to love my Arc (lt15) but I was constantly battling with lag, battery life, and storage space etc. Trying new rom after new rom helped fix this to some degree but it was never perfect.
The One S is slim, has an awesome finish, a beautiful screen and camera and I'm sitting here 16 hours later with 50% battery left.
So, thank you to the Arc for being a great phone but onwards and upwards to the One S.

there not bad but so flimsy the missis had hers for less than 2 days she dropped it while knelt down from her trouser pocket and the outer screen shattered bare in mind the missus is only 5"5 so knelt down the fone only fell like a foot at the most althow its never a good idea to drop ur fone at least with the arcs sturdyness it would have take that fall a hundred times over and laughed back
Do you like Sense, or do you think the Xperia UXP was better?
and besides isnt the htc running 4.0.3 that would be a step down software wise wouldnt it =)
I actually like Sense a lot more than the Sony UI, HTC have really done the new implementation well but as with everything, if you don't like it you can just remove it, in my case i've kept it.
As for sturdiness, well I am prone to dropping my phone and the Arc took quite a beating, lets home my One S doesn't suffer if/when I drop it.
well best of luck to u m8 my partners screen didnt, only guna cost like £40 to repair it but still alot for a 2 day old fone oh and fyi hers was the htc one X sorry not the S
I'm also thinking about upgrading to the One S. Are you content with the upgrade? Personally I'd have to pay 200$ for the upgrade - do you think that it's worth it? Is it anything that you miss about the arc having your One S for a few days now?
Xperia S it better option as compare to One S
i read all the specs of one S
it has only 16 GB internal memory with no memory card slot 8 MP camera and no HDMI port , also the 256 ppi pixel density
Xperia S is better then this specs

And then you miss out the serious specs like the 'Xperia S' running an older Qualcomm S3 where as the One S has the S4 chip set...Makes a large difference.

Other countries' HTC One S is sporting the Qualcomm S3 dual core SoC.
Taiwan is one for example, it is clocked at 1.7GHz.
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-one-s-launched-in-taiwan-with-snapdragon-s3-01231207/
So Xperia S is at advantage when compared to the HTC One S S3 variant, with higher ppi and slightly larger screen to name a few.
The problem with One S is the pentile matrix on a relatively low ppi screen and the camera which using gsmarena compare picture quality tool seems to be worse than the one on the Arc. Those are the only 2 reasons why I'm still not upgrading. I don't know about real life performance difference too, I'd like the person who switched to compare, because I'm curious.
On one hand in benchmarks the S4 is a king of mobile processors at the moment offering like a dozen times faster float point processing but is it really that noticeable? Arc is relatively smooth in all it does. And that appears to be the biggest difference between those 2 phones, except of the price. I'm not sure if it's worth the price difference.
One S with Dual core Krait processor is the beast of the phones! Even beats the quad one x. Tegra 3 is just good for games only. Krait outshines tegra3 in the rest!!!
I played with an Xperia P today and it's beautiful. I actually prefer it over the Xperia S. I might have to sell my arc S and get one.

I actually just ordered the SG Note i717. I was going to go with the One s, but i didn't like how it doesn't have an external car slot. I like the idea of having all that memory on your phone, but wtf, we can't have an external card too. ppfffft that. So I decided on the note. The big ass screen will help with everything I have to do online for school, plus it can take a microsd so I'm happy, just waiting for it to get here is the dragger. I know it still has the S3 processor but the only difference noticebly is heavy heavy use or camera snap time between them, of course the S4 is faster. The next one will be as well and so on so forth. On the other hand I still can't complain about my Arc S. It's has been quite the champ after all said n done now I get like 24-50 hours battery life, just accessing my school online with zooming n unzooming all the time is annoying as hell. I might sell my arc s or just use it to, how did my roommate put it, "technologically rape" it.
Hey guys I have been visiting this forum for a while. I bought my Bravo a little less than two years ago because it had good battery life, my priority for an android at 6 hours talk time and 384 hours standy. When I wasn't able to use GPS etc without lag, I finally put CM9 on it and it gave new life to my phone (although the battery life went down a little even after playing with governors and profiles etc).
The beauty of this phone has been the support for it. I mean if you ever screw it up you just download the sbf and rsd lite it. Superoneclick for root. Init2nddefty for booting. CWM support. CWM from marketplace (bandroidx). App unlocker on market place. I mean it is just so well supported and convenient for a phone that I bought $120 off contract.
The form factor and size of the Bravo are also really nice. Not too large, not too small, and coming from the blackberry bold before it (with a leather back), it just slips right into your pocet.
If I wanted to 'upgrade' my phone, preferably on att, but open to any carrier, what would you guys say is a good version of the android with battery life priortized and all the support and ease of the bravo, but better?
Any suggestions? I'm looking at the Razor Maxx, Droid X2, Galaxy S2 (Skyrocket, I heard was amazing), Bionic, ONe X,
Honestly at this point I would look at the skyrocket; you can do a lot with it in terms of customization, and it'll cost less than a current phone. Having said that, I would prefer an SGS3 on contract would be less expensive than a skyrocket unlocked.
For the moment I'm personally waiting for the One X+, but that hasn't even been officially announced.

As much as I hate saying it, I'd stay away from the Motorola phones. While the Razor and X2 may get kexec kernels, you're still on a locked bootloader which is what cripples all Moto phones. That, and a lot of Moto Phone devs pull from the Defy Team and backport from there (we have more up to date roms than the X2 for example).
It's either S2 or One X if it was my decision. That said, I'd like an Xperia Play. Its hard to beat the offspring of a PS controller that had sex with an Android.

incredible and the atrix too
i just wonder whether i should keep going with cheap used phones or get a nice samsung 2 rocket on contract for $50! 2 years
I'm not a developer and having the stock bootloader, with the default sbf, hasn't ever caused any problems for me. made things a little difficult, but there was a workaround at least with the bravo
I myself am going with the gsm Google nexus. Edit: went with the atrix hd...budget concerns.

That One X looks pretty sexy.
Edit: boo! No removable battery or microsd!
hmm with the above standards, priority on battery life (which the nexus has in lieu of a lesser camera). the only two concerns i have about the nexus
1. why do people say that nexus is better supported on xda than the galaxy s2? howso for just a basic user looking for easy rootability, good battery life and speed?
2. Any runners? Something seldom posted in video reviews is the physical factor of the phone. I feel like the galaxy s2 is too long and kind of clunky for a runner. Then again it is lighter
3. How proprietary are google's phones? Will I be forced to sync with google servers or can I still keep contacts hard copy on my phone for security purposes?
This is a hard choice
I'd also be interested in knowing how the brightness and picture quality and ease of snapping on-the-go photos in the city compares for of the 5mp (nexus) vs galaxy s2? Do they both offer picture stabilization? I would just be taking photos of intersting places in the city. I have an 10 mp kodak at home (nothing fancy) but the convenience of having a camera in my pocket is awesome
I also found the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy W but dont know how well supported this is
EDIT Between the Galaxy W and S2...ridiculous that Google Nexus doesn't have SDHC what were they thinking!?

The biggest problem with that is, especially for Americans under a contract, that with limited bandwidth you can easily exceed your bandwidth allotment and get occured charges. A good example, I can maybe watch an hour of online video a month with AT&T 3g before I get overage charges. I pay the $20 a month for unlimited data (provided I don't use more than 2 gigabytes, then $20 a gig after that) which isn't an unlimited plan, but its advertised as one.
The Motorola Photon Q looks pretty good. It'll be my next phone. Motorola - Unlocked Bootloader - Dual Core Processor @ 1.5ghz - 1 gig of ram - expandable microsd memory - 8 gigs of internal memory - 1080p rear camera - 720p front camera - slide out keyboard - runs ICS - affordably priced. Did I mention its a Motorola with an Unlocked Bootloader?
The only problems I can see with the Q are the fixed internal battery and 960x540 screen resolution. Although its not like you need a full hd resolution in a 4.3 inch screen.
hey guys!
so i've used the Moto Defy for a good amount of time now its body is dying and time for a new phone. what do you suggest guys? im looking for something tough and light similar to the Defy in construction but better in terms of HW and SW, preferably not a Motorola this time!
thanks!
Some Sony devices do have the rough and tough build quality just like our Defy. But my suggestion is to get a Nexus 4.
PS: Next time ask this question in the device suggestion thread on XDA. This will not only give you more response but it also keeps the Defy forum clean.

You're best off with the Galaxy Nexus, for optimal compatibility.
1st choices: HTC Butterfly or Nexus 4.
2nd choice: GSIII
3rd choices: GSII and GNex
I'm personally against buying LG, even if it's Nexus 4. In some cases it doesn't have 4G/LTE (And they said it would have it...they lied), and I honestly consider LG as being a pretty bad company. It might make you want a Moto again.
-Galaxy Nexus - if you don't mind the battery and the lack of microSD support, it's a go.
-HTC phones - some members complained about them lately not getting the ROM support they should get.
-Galaxy S3 - might be a good buy.
-Galaxy S2 - there was a version (I9100G) which if you get your hands on, you'll have a really nice support.
-Sony Xperia S - a good competitor to the S2. I really it, it has a LOT of custom ROM support, since Sony is possibly the best manufacturer which provides modding support for their phones.
My (personal) future decision: Sony Xperia Acro S. It's similar to the Xperia S, but it features microSD, a bigger battery (even if battery tests say otherwise, I'm sure that it can be modded) and it's waterproof and IP57 if I recall correctly. It's like a better Defy with custom ROM support. I have to say, currently the custom ROM database for it isn't that big, but I think it will become bigger in time.
Im justs tarting to look for a defy replacement, my Defy has outlive several cases, and it has, and sometimes still does get a bit of a battering, its even survived a cycle in a washing machine ( in a pocket)
So when it comes to a replacement it will be a waterproof/resistant dustproof device, but there doestn appaer to be much out there. The sony Acro S was never released in the UK, and it looks lie the other water/dust proof sony phones will go the same way. any sugestions?

I pretty much agree about LG being unreliable.
-HTC phones - ONLY get an HTC if it has S-OFF
-Galaxy S3 - As with HTC, devs are abandoning it or talking about abandoning it... and going to the Nexus 4. This is because Sammy's Exynos 4 chips are still closed source, and so devving for them is a PITA.
-Galaxy S2 - It's a bit outdated by now, IMO
-Galaxy Nexus - Like GS2, it's outdated.
-Sony Xperia S - Sony's recent AOSP commitments have been encouraging. But I find their devices to be grossly overpriced... and the new blocky squarish design language used in all new Sony phones (except maybe Xperia T/TL) is too unnatural and boring for me, TBH.
One addition: HTC One S - Dual core Krait, solid design, low price. Beautiful lower mid range phone, IMO.
I'm kinda on the fence here... I want cutting edge stuff... so I'm thinking of waiting for the GSIV which'll be an A15 phone... or for the HTC M7... but not too keen on Tegra 4... devs have the same issues with Tegra as they have with Exynos... only a lot more problems with Tegra.....
In the short term, I just might use my parents' T-Mo G2X or Sensation while waiting till MWC...
I think the best hardware with lifeproof capabilities, by now, is XPeria Acro S. Not sure about ROM support, but I took a look on its development section and it's plenty of custom kernels.
There is the Xperia V, Sony´s new rugged phone. It´s dual core but it´s the best rugged phone, i think.
If mine dies ,.....this time i would replace it with an used one from ebay ..........

Why go with locked up moto devices AGAIN?
If you have any plans of installing custom firmware on a new phone, I would advise against Moto...
If you don't want to customise the software, then, sure, Moto's hardware is pretty neat.
A colleague of mine bought an LG Prada which he then killed within a couple of weeks by water ingress.
That put him onto the path of waterproof phones, and he ended up ordering an Acro S from hong kong.
It's a nice piece of kit, and probably the closest thing to a modernised Defy. The Xperia V seems to be a minor update on the Acro S.

Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro is probably the way to go. They already have CM9 and CM10 on it, and it's military certified to boot. Wicked tough. Also it's got an S4 processor. Just can't lose.
After spamming the 4.4 update thread with phone comparison things, I decided to open a new thread.
Here we can compare other devices with the RAZR I and debate about stuff like that.
Now I will start.
After getting more and more problems with my RAZR I I decided to buy a new phone. I was searching for several weeks and now I have a moto X.(in Germany, bought via eBay, using Verizon KK ROM with fully supported German language)
What I have noticed so far:
-the X perfectly fits in your hand with a acceptable weight
-the battery consumption is better than the Ri's ( I get easy 20h of (my) normal use; Ri got only ~17h)
-the screen have a much higher resolution
-the X have a better performance, up to now I doesn't had any lags.
-the voice from outgoing calls is very clear, a bit better than the Ri; the voice quality of incoming calls depends on the calling phone
-both cameras of the X are better than the Ri's, but it have also problems when the light is low
-active display and touchless control are pretty neat
Motorola Moto X DE XT1053
Do we think the RAZR I will get 4.4
I hope moto let us know soon.
All the best

I think it is not fair to compare the Razr i against the X. The Moto X is without question the better phone by far, but that comes along with the fact that the X is a fully fledged flagship model of an Android and the Razr is and was a budget phone with medium specs. So a comparison can only be fair, if you compare it to phones in the same league like the Moto G, HTC One Mini, Samsung 4 mini and so on..
I recently had a Moto G in my hands and I can say that this phone is really remarkable, nice specs, nice design and it works like a charm. The only things that I noticed that are not to my liking is the bad camera and it is a bit too big for its own good. For my personal taste 4.3 is a perfect form factor, 4.5 is 0.2 inches too much. Also it is a bit thicker than the Razr i, so with my tiny little hands the G felt a bit bigger in my hands. Im not sure, if I just have to get used to that, but I really like the slim look and feel of the Razr i in comparison.

Im not sure, if I just have to get used to that, but I really like the slim look and feel of the Razr i in comparison.

Same here, I also think that Moto X is currently the best phone on the market but still little to big for me.

I agree entirely.
I picked up a G over Christmas to cheer myself up a bit and to find out what all the fuss was about - is this phone really as good as they say for such a ridiculously low price? Well in my opinion yes, and more.
I'd had a number of frustrations with my XT890: random lagginess, certains apps not being compatible, battery life not being quite as good as I expected, amongst others. The one thing I absolutely love about the '90 though is the form factor and build quality, so IMO how does the G stack up against it? Well it's now very much my main phone.
Overall I find it's quicker and smoother with nowhere near as many lags, although whether this is down to JB 4.3, the chip, or a combination of both I have no idea, but for me it works better. The build quality is exemplary. It doesn't in any way look or feel like a plastic phone and is a rock solid build, which is a lesson Samsung should learn and I'm not talking about their budget end either. Battery life is better, beautiful screen, and couldn't be happier. True, the camera's c*** but I'm not going to use it anyway,so a big thumbs up!
Thank you for the voice quality comparison on the Moto X that is great info!!!! Can someone comment on the same thing regarding the G?

But it's only the X's screen size which is bigger than moto G's. These phone have nearly the same shape.
And the moto x doesn't feel so big.
To the problem with no SD-card-slot:
Yes that was the one point annoying me, but to be serious, even the nexus phones haven't such a slot and Google presents how they think a android phone have to look like with this phones, so I think the sd-card-slot will die out slowly.
So I bought a developer edition with 32GB of storage. That is enough for me, I've used the RAZR I with the internal 8GB plus a 16GB SD card and even that was okay.
On the other hand we have to look at the battery consumption. A device which have to handle a internal and a external storage needs more energy. Also are SD cards mostly slower than the build in storage, which means that we lose performance.
Motorola Moto X DE XT1053
In my opinion the SD card slot is only needed, if the phone has insufficient internal memory. 16 GB is just not enough for today's needs. At least for me it is not. 32 and plus of storage is a must have. That's why I didn't get a new nexus device or will not get the Moto G.

I agree on the storage issue. My iPhone 5s has 64GB and only has about 20 gigs left. It will probably be quite full in a year or two. Why phones aren't offered with 128 or heck even 512 gigs is beyond me. They are the main computers in many of our lives now. They can charge pretty much anything they want for it and a lot of us will pay.
the asus zenPhone 5'@720p, atom z2580, 8gb + sd card, android 4.3, update to 4.4, for only 150 U$S its really the moto g killer.
I found the LG Nexus 4 a great replacement for my old Motorola Razr i, and it's even cheaper here on my country...
Moto G
I'm thinking about to sell my Razr i for 200€ and buy the Moto G for 169€ or even the one for 199€. My Razr i looks like freshly taken from the box, not one scratch, nothing. And there is a 64GB memory card with it. If I install the stock ROM then there is only the warning about the unlocked bootloader that reminds you that it is a used device.
I bought the 64GB card to listen to music, back when I was going to school but now it's a different situation and I don't have the time to listen to music on my smartphone, especially since I have a car now. And even if I wanna listen to music on my phone I think 16GB or even 8GB would be enough.

Motorola Moto X DE XT1053
I'm really not trying to troll here, just relaying my experience over the last two months:
I've been on Android for 3 years. Before, I was using WindowsMobile 6, and version 5 before that, until Microsoft stupidly killed that incredibly diverse ecosystem and made me and millions of others jump to Android. I had a clamshell Razr V3i before that that was an astonishingly good and beautifully hackable phone for the time - it was a great web browser with opera mini and I could email from it too, fantastic voice quality that could be tuned with a hex editor, and excellent radio/reception. It took a microSD so I used it as an MP3 player too. Moto typically has great build quality and radios though they definitely have released some total junk phones along the way too, I think I had a V551(??) that was dog poop, and several moto phones the camera broke on for no reason, usually a hardware failure like one of the internal lenses becoming dislodged, even if the phone was never dropped.
My *personal opinion* is that Android was most stable, useful and hackable at version 2.3 and has had been becoming progressively less stable and ever more locked down since. I have a Nexus 7 that I just leave stock and let it autoupdate whenever it feels like it to see what the latest edition of Android and latest versions of all my apps always look like; I've watched in horror as android and the Android app ecosystem has become a bug ridden laggy crashy malware adware spyware filled unholy mess over the last 12 months, as bad as Windows 98/XP ever was. Previously, as an android user I had always felt a little bit... i don't know... "more savvy" than iPhone users because Android was (supposedly) less expensive and I could make it do anything I wanted. But with the update to 4.1 on my RAZR i, I could no longer WIFI tether (it could tether with 4.0 but then Moto locked out tethering HARD and no one has figured a way around it) and that just made me really POed.
Then I also thought about it and realized I had EIGHT android devices and I was spending a ton of money always buying new android phones because that was usually the only way I could run the latest OS. I've for three years always been waiting/hoping that I'll get the next version of android when it is released, and usually all my hopes were dashed. Yes I did all the cyanagenmod/etc reflashing stuff for a while but that's always a little risky and after 10 or so flashes constantly trying out roll your own OS turns into a real time consumer, often gives me new bugs when I was trying eliminate other old bugs, and for some devices, namely the RAZRi, sometimes just not an option. My original Moto RAZR has a locked bootloader that was never really worked around. I was getting so sick of waiting around all of the time.
And I was noticing that there were people with iPhones many years old still using them, still happy with them. I played with a friends iPhone 3GS a year ago and was impressed with how smooth it was even then with supposedly far less hardware than my RAZR, and how happy she still was with it - and I noticed how aggravated I was with my RAZR.
So WTF, two months ago I bought a new iPhone 5s 64gb. It was Very
Expensive... but not really compared to the highest end Moto X, which was the other phone I was considering.
At first it was super annoying, not intuitive at all coming from android, lots of the design decisions seemed stupid. But I stuck with it, finally got used to everything about 3 weeks ago, and now two months after purchase I can say from my heart, and my head, it just blows Android out of the water right at this time. It is ROCK SOLID in hardware build and software stability, an order of magnitude above any android devices. I just can't stress enough how stable ios is compared to android. It took me many weeks to figure out all the workarounds I needed to do stuff like tethering, swype, etc, but now it does everything I can do on android.
I have two phones (work/personal), and this week I needed a second phone to replace my Razr i (which now has a new issue of blurry focus camera that I fix by banging it with my hand... i never dropped it... sigh), so I I just bought a used perfect condition 64gb Iphone 5 for $400. Goodbye Android for now.
There are hundreds of teensy little software and hardware design decisions in the iPhone that just make it so *pleasant* to use all the time. It makes all versions of android seem so rough and unpolished when I use my other android devices.
In the long run I think the iPhones will be either a wash cost wise, or maybe a little cheaper because now I can instead of buying a new Android phone every few months in hopes of finally having one that is solid and stable, I'll likely keep these iPhones for 2-3+ years and I'm guaranteed years of the most recent OS, available as soon as announced. But cost aside, ios is just a completely stress free experience that lets me get on with life.
Oh one last thing, the responsiveness of the iPhone is *phenomenal* I read a few months ago this is because the electronic hardware itself for the touchscreen has about 1/3rd the lag time between touching the screen, and the OS getting the signal. It makes the display feel really really good all the time. Now when I use any android touch screen it just feels so slow and annoying. Battery life is at least double the RAZR i in my experience so far, mostly because there is never any crap running in the background that I can't turn off, like is always happening in android as soon as I add more than three apps.
I'm not an apple aficionado at all; as soon as I find something better than iPhone I'll jump ship immediately, but as far as I can tell iPhone 5s is the best there is right now.
tl;dr: the iPhone 5 and 5s are mindblowingly good compared to the hell and heartbreak that android has turned onto. YMMV
Unfortunately, I must agree. Apple is doing so many things better with iOS than Google with Android. I always liked Android for openness, community, tweaking abilities ... currently I even write soft for Android at work ... but still, I'm always waiting for new version of Android that will fix problems from current version, I'm looking for custom ROMS that will eliminate constant lag and solve other problems.
I liked Google because it was the best software company in the world, company that ideology I liked, but now ... it's changing. They've still got good software but ads are getting more aggressive than ever, Android is getting more and more closed, and it will be fully closed in future, so maybe it's time to start searching for something new. But anyway I think that Android will be the most popular OS for very, very long time.

Yeah, I have to say, that you have right with much things you've said, but you couldn't forget that iOS is build by apple, so they can perfectly fit the software to the hardware and vice versa. Android is open source and Google couldn't specify it for one device, it have to be as much stable as possible for a lot of devices, that is the problem. That's the same with every open source os.
Motorola Moto X DE XT1053
Well, I just made the switch from Razr I to the Moto G, just because I was offered a good price for my Razr (pristine condition) and couldn't resist.
Wasn't expecting much really, but it actually feels like a good upgrade. The screen is TONS better and with Kitkat the menu buttons now are completely hidden in most apps, making the screen really 4.5 inches. The overall feel is faster, especially with apps like Maps and Chrome. Games run faster as well, for example Asphalt 8 plays perfect on high settings, while on the Razr I will run only on low.
The downsides are plastic instead of the metal and kevlar on the Razr, the screen is not edge to edge and the camera is worse (also no 1080p video).
But for me the bigger and better display and the faster performance are worth it.
I currently think about getting a Sony Z1 Compact.
Hey all,
Been using my RAZR M for a long while now. I really like the small size and decent hardware specs. I know it won't last forever... So, recently, I took a look at what I could replace it with and found very few options in it's size and form factor. I prefer Motorola devices to other manufacturers, so I was limited to their current and previous models.
The closest I came, was the Droid MAXX. Only slightly larger with a nice screen (higher resolution and a bit larger) and decent specs including battery life. The main issue? NO MEMORY CARD SLOT! That is a deal breaker for me.
Anyone have any suggestions??
Thanks,
Rick
BlackIce
Droid Mini is about the same size as the RAZR M but shares the same processor as the DROID MAXX and the 2 gigs of RAM also
Replacing with a Droid Mini, really doesn't get me anywhere. It has the same size screen and a but less battery life.
Rick
I thought you wanted the small form factor of the Droid RAZR M??, the DROID MAXX is significantly larger then the Droid RAZR M
I was just facing the same problem, and ended up getting the razr M....
I didn't really care about manufacturer, though. But I wanted a small form factor, SD card slot, much prefer amoled, and a lively hack community.
Last contenders for me were:
Samsung S4 mini
Sony Z3 compact - sadly not amoled, and quite expensive.
BLU has some phones that I looked into, for example the vivo HD. But in the end I got the razr M...
I'm Back. It really is time to replace my Razr M. Works OK.. has some battery drain and heat issues sometimes. Likely that's software related. At this point a slightly larger screen would be fine, but whatever replaces it MUST have a card slot of somekind as I really use the space for lots of documents and pdf's I carry around for reference.
Any recommendations for a new Motorola Phone? I'd like to stay away from the huge mini tablet style phones, but a light upsize would be OK.
I do not need the newest or latest/greatest offering, a generation newer (or two) would be OK and I could find one at a good price online.
What say you all?
Rick
I'd say the G4 Plus or maybe the new G5 Plus? If you're willing to venture outside of Motorola, the X Compact from Sony might be to your likely. Personally, I thought I could never have a large phone and then bought a Moto X PE. Was a good phone for about two years.
Wow thoe G4 is HUGE! 5.5 inch screen. I'd like to stay in the 5" max range.
thanks!
Rick
I just bought a used HTC One M8, and I'm very happy with it. Larger footprint, and it's easily unlockable. I still love my RazrM, but this phone is blazing fast in comparison. Many custom ROMs available for it, including several based on the latest nougat OS.
The G5 Plus is a 5.2 screen, but has call quality issues on VoLTE with Verizon. The new Moto e4 is a little smaller.
Looks like the HTC 10 is essentially the same size as the Moto e4 yet slightly larger and much better screen and horsepower.
I took a look at the new Small Goofle Pixel phone. It was nice, but no SD card slot. Dealbreaker.
Still looking. I could use a generation or two behind the current crop of phones, but my Razr M is beginning to have difficulty with many of the newer google apps. Slow downs, pauses, etc.
Rick
All the Moto G and E series have SD slot as does the HTC 10. Pixel is too $$$. The 5X would have been OK except it had the bad GPU solder issues.
I understand about the slow down. I just wiped my cache for the first time ever and that has helped.
