New launcher (JB 4.2.1) - Transformer TF300T General

Regarding the new stock launcher in JB 4.2.1 (and beyond?)...
1) How do I now switch from the three CPU performance mode? (power saving/balanced/performance)
2) How do I quickly switch wifi, GPS etc on/off without having to go to the settings?
3) The new slim bar at the top, takes up extra space? We now have even less available screen space than before?
I feel slightly annoyed by Google's idea of progress... in similar fashion to the recent YouTube app updates, the philosophy seems to be: remove features and rearrange stuff.
What do you think?
(I've posted this in the WW 4.2.1 update thread, but I think it deserves its own thread. This is not about the 4.2.1 update in general, it's about the new stock launcher)

Thanks, I saw that option. But it is not a guarantee that it will be there ad infinitum. I wanted to make this post because maybe there is something I was missing in the new launcher.

i believe in 4.2.2 google added a long press functionality to the quick toggles to allow them to be turned on/off quickly. i know i have it on cm10.1 on my phone...
I used the new launcher for about 5 mins before reverting to the old one. I'm sorry, but it's just not practical for a tablet!
also, is it just me or is the multitasking ui kind of dumb?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using XDA Premium HD app

I switched mine to the new launcher (after checking here that I would be able to revert).
I don't think I lasted even a minute. I actually said ew! out loud.
Did not like that the entire bottom is just the three soft buttons, and centered as well, so i can't reach it with my thumb (I use the tablet almost exclusively in landscape mode). There may be a way to change that, but I also didn't care for the time in the small font up top either.
I hope they never force us to use that launcher. I guess there's always Nova Launcher, which I use on my phone, but don't on the tablet.
Thanks,
Brian

The 4.2 tablet UI works really well on the N7, but doesn't feel quite right on the 10.1" tabs. I really like having the dock back though, and while I appreciate the 'four corners' approach to the Honeycomb UI, I prefer having everything within my thumbs' reach. If Google used an inverted phone shade in the lower right and the on-screen buttons in the lower left for the future tablet UI, I think we'd have a winner.

Even with Nova launcher you still get the same layout.

i actually like the idea of three buttons home back recent apps in the center, so i don't have to reach my hand to the left side, i also like that's there are 2 "notification centers" (one is the "real", the other is quick settings). but i don't like to have 2 bars on top and bottom, so i switched to the old style,
i guess i'll use the new style if they combine the 2 bars into one

I think you're talking about 4.1 layout (tablet mode) and 4.2 (phablet) - and as far as I read before you can easily switch between these two somewhere in Asus Settings (or device settings?) Then you should have the old layout with navbar on bottom and on the right status bar (I don't know if they cooked in the Tiles there) :good:

i think we have in settings a field called "launcher settings" !
and yea, i still use 4.1 launcher because we have the option to lock bottom taskbar when we are playing or whatever we do. :victory:

I'm glad for the 4.1 mode. Played with 4.2 launcher mode for almost an hour, but I just couldn't get used to it. It's just wasting space. Hopefully Asus will keep this in the future too.

This is also exactly what I want, I hope that Google gives us this layout in a future update!
Did anyone notice when using the 4.1 launcher (the older one), the UI is kind of too high on the screen? The top of my app icons are over the "google" button used to make searches and there's quite a big unused space between the system bar and the bottom apps. Not sure if I'm making any sense. Am I alone to have this issue?

No issues here

Maybe I'm confused, but I don't really see how this allows us to multitask better. Is there an option to have two apps on the screen at a time or something? I couldn't see any real difference other than layout, so I just switched back to the old layout since I don't really like the new one. Is there anything else that changed?

I don't know if any one has tried the old launcher but when i swithed back i couldn't get my weather widget to update. Anyone else run into this issue. Ended up going back to the 4.2.1 launcher because of it.
Got it to work removed the widget, went to apps in the setting and cleared the data and cache then reloaded widget works fine.

I might be the minority here but I actually love the new layout
I switch the CPU mode by going to the settings. This might be annoying for some but for me, it's not a big deal as I just leave it on performance mode

Hey man, have you had it where you go to install an App and the 'pop' up dialog disappears until you touch it? Pretty much any dialog of the type disappears on AOKP in tablet mode. (atleast the version I'm using)
This is 213 dpi in 4.3 stunner. There's no dialog problem what so ever. Yes I can make and receive calls without any problem. This is the most stable ics I've ever used on note just follow the download instructions carefully

Sweetness indeed...
Can you put 5 columns of apps like in GB, it seems that your video shows only 4. Although plenty of rows.
Also, and although I think it's mandatory as per the ICS specs, can you avoid the 3 hoe, back and search buttons in the screen and instead use the physical ones, even in landscape mode?
Thanks.
Is the S-pen compatible with this ROM?
You mind posting the settings used? I changed the dpi to 213 but I can only use the middle of the screen. Not sure what else needs tweaking to be able to use the full screen...
Great little video
I used the tablet mode for a couple of days and it's a nice change! However, now i'm using the phone mode on ICS Stunner 4.3 and it's equally as awesome

Problem getting into tablet mode
I apologise for asking this question, but I haven't found an answer within the forum anywhere and I am unable to post it in the developer section due to me being a new user. I've been using the ICS Stunner 5.0 beta ROM for the past two days now and I am unable to get it to boot into tablet mode. I have followed all of the steps in Euphoria Control to get it into tablet mode, including a custom DPI of 213. I performed a clean install with the ROM and my phone has full root access.
Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

Change log/ new features in XXALJ3

India got a new ota update this morning with a LJ3 build
Here's my change log/what's new in this update from Sammy boys beast galaxy note 2 N7100 build XXALJ3
1.The led on charging has been fixed from low dim red to bright red ( but this issue still exists in leaked jelly rom for s3 glad sammy fixed this on the note 2)
2. The battery life has been increased also noticed that Android or android os test in battery usage is missing. After 2 hours I lost about 2 % on battery with 8 % on screen and device idel.
3. Smart rotation for YouTube has been fixed and smart stay seems to pick my face within a sec without the indication on status bar
4. Opening an app from multi view/multi window animation has been improved.. It doesn't feel a bit laggy like before.
5. Im not sure about this but on camera if your choosing between front and back there's a new animation icon
6. The web browser tab zooms in instead of side cha cha step
7. The keywords on stock keyboard predictions have been improved and accurate.
Things that haven't changed
1. The apex transparency issue in touchwiz hasn't been fixed ( I doubt samsung will provide a fix but hopefully the apex dev comes up with something)
2. The air view doesn't work on Google chrome like on web browser I can scroll down while hovering the screen.
3. Screen recorder hasn't been added yet.
Next wishlist for 4.1.2 ( if a samsung dev happens to see this post *Fingers crossed*)
1 . Please include Google + and Facebook messenger on multi window (if a power hungry apps like chrome or YouTube works I don't see why these apps didn't make the list)
2. Please do fix the transparency issue on apex and nova launcher.
3.please include an option to wake the screen using flip covers.
4. 5x5 icons on the Homescreen
5. Ability to hide the side bar on the picture Gallery.
6. FONT size issue
7. Auto keywords after a space bar press from stock keyboard
8. Status bar fix (we prefer the black status bar from ics(S3) the grey status bar on jelly might be a huge problem in the future and it looks odd on full brightness).

nova fixed the transparency issue 3 betas ago.

If you use the latest stable official version from nova launcher then yes the problem still exists. But the transparency thing is fixed when you upgrade to a beta version (you can do that within the nova launcher settings).
We need also in the next update :-
(1) 5x5 icons on the Homescreen
(2) Ability to hide the side bar on the picture Gallery.

My wishlist....
- They need to fix the font bug -. If you set the font size to Tiny in either the system or the email client it doesnt set to tiny in the list of emails. (before anyone asks this worked on the old note 1)
- It would be great if they set the status bar color to black black and not some greyish black.
- 5x5 on the home screen plus reduce the margins and wasted space on the home screen.
Just got my Note 2, 3 hours ago. I got 3 updates in a row. And you what I love it. My god the screen is absolutely stunning.

4.2(4.2.1) Official update NO TABLETUI

Just wondering.. Does anybody else know that their beloved Tablet UI will NOT be in the Official 4.2 update? The New notification widgets wont be able to support the tablet ui Notification area. What are your thoughts on this?
I want a tablet, not a bigger phone. I don't like the new UI and I hope that Asus will keep the current one or at least provide it as an option.

more than the launcher, i think the concern would be the change to the notification bar, because in 4.2 there is a status bar and the lower bar are just the 3 buttons, basically a big phone, maybe asus willl find a way to theme nicely the two panel pulldown thingie!
androidheadlines . com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/tablets-pulldown.png
Y should Asus change something (except the bloatware)? I think they didn't do it in 4.1 so they won't do it in 4.2 except the navbar button style... - only good thing would be to get a bigger area for the top bar, because I nearly can't touch it because of the case which is a bit awful, but this UI is awesome, you just have to use it for a time and also on your phone - navbar buttons in the middle is a bit awful with dock use, that's the only disadvantage...
I will stay on 4.1 if we don't get tablet UI on 4.2, or before someone will made a port of tablet UI for 4.2, the phablet UI just sucks!
On my cusions nexus 10 its the phablet ui, you can't change the LCD density to make it tabletui, you can only make the phabletui bigger or smaller
It is highly likely that Asus keeps the tablet ui. No sense in changing the UI that radically in an ota, the non techy people would have a hard time with it.
Though for the record, the hybrid ui is great on the Nexus 7.
That sucks...no tablet ui supported.
Honestly its weird but I like tablet ui on my note 2 and phablet ui on my transformer.

Phablet UI is a mess. It is silly to have such UI on 10 inch screen. I cannot be more user unfriendly. It is total disaster from ergonomic point of view I hope Asus will keep tablet UI or I will either stay with 4.1 on use some custom ROM.

Remember, they're appealing to the masses by keeping the ui consistent between tablets and phones. However, i don't see why they couldn't remove the status bar and put the buttons in the middle or slightly shifted to the left, keeping the bottom bar ( its lots of unused space) and toggles on the left of the buttons.

Hi all,
Has anyone successfully obtained the tablet UI on 4.3 yet.
I have just updated from PA and gone back to stock but really miss the tablet layout

With these two apps you do not need any black bars and their wasted space:
Full!screen: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen&hl=en
> removes both bars and provides a notification pop-up
LMT (PIE): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150
> The PIE feature allows you to customize two semi-circles sets of buttons which usually replaces navigation buttons plus a lot more.
They both work with Android 4.3 but not perfectly. I suspect these minor issues will be fixed soon.
> Both add an unwanted notification that their perspective app is running. Clicking on them leads to the apps settings page.
> Full!screen will not autostart but can be launched manually and works fine from there. Its configuration page app states that it is incompatible with 4.3 but works anyway.
I have been using both apps for several months now and cannot imagine going back to having the wasted screen space.

I just wish Google would put in an option to scoot the buttons over to the left. I'm fine with the top bar, but I don't like the buttons in the middle.
Logically, the tablet UI made so much sense. I do miss being able to see important information like the clock and battery when an app or a game goes to full screen.

Tablet ui code was removed by Google in version 4.2.2 as they wanted a single unified interface, in previous versions some devices on stock could be tricked into one mode or other by tweaking the build.prop values. Since 4.2.2 the code for the (old) tablet mode needs to be put back into the ROM (As in P.A for example) this means it's not a simple quick task, Once the 4.3 code has been merged with the 4.2.2 sources I am sure we will see all the ROM's on xda updated soon.

Tablet UI

Is there a way to get the tablet UI on the 2013 Nexus 7 yet????

How about a way on stock ROM? Just a mod or tweak or something?

The Nexus 7 comes with a tablet UI, unless you are talking about the old UI from HoneyComb that was depreciated a while ago. I don't understand why people are still hung up on legacy layouts.
"It's very clear what Google is doing - keeping users' attention on two general parts of the homescreen UI. The search / voice / notification area, and the app drawer / nav button area. Just like a modern Android phone. It makes sense - the experience across all [stock-ish] devices is now extremely consistent."

Except that that is simply not the case.
On phones the navigation buttons never leave the short side of the screen leaving them easily accessible with your right thumb while in landscape. On tablets the nav bar is terrible with the buttons spread out across the bottom while holding your device in landscape. The centred buttons are barely reachable on a 7" tablet like this. On 10" devices unless you are some kind of mutant, bred to be a piano virtuoso, good luck getting your thumbs where they need to go while cradling the tablet in 2 hands. Similarly the top-of-screen based notification pull down is simply not an ergonomic solution to something that you will be doing thousands of times with your device. Again this is not so bad on a device of this size, but is seriously ridiculous on large tablets.
It is all well and good for Google to say that they want users to have the same user experience across all devices, but they do not deliver on that. Given no other option, I would far rather use this tablet in full phone mode, with navigation buttons that never leave the short edge of the screen, than use the new "Tablet UI". I have actually clicked the DPI up to 340 and find the phone UI much easier to use than the default one, with the obvious exception of the full screen notification shade (which just looks ugly on this device). At least though, this configuration would be more condusive to one handed landscape navigation.
So, for me, I am going to keep using the old tablet UI as long as Google leaves the code in there for me to use and hope that they come to their senses one day over at the AOSP and realize that they've actually taken a step backwards in terms of user friendliness.
No need for nay-sayers to jump in when someone asks for a customized user experience. That's the beauty of Android! It isn't a one size fits all, apple-corer OS. The only limit is your imagination, and how much time you want to spend learning and tweaking. I say tweak on, young man, tweak on!

Because it's functional. The notification area is always visible even when apps are running full screen.
I can see the clock. I can see if the downloading is finished. I can see if a new email has come in.
The new Mod for tablet UI is working nicely.

The new UI is much better looking, to be fair. And the notification area on the old one felt a bit rushed - for example, if a notification came in, it hijacked the entire notification area so you couldn't get to other notifications until it was gone - or at least, that's what I thought until I figured out that (for whatever reason), notifications could be cancelled by pressing somewhere else on the navbar (in other words, that 'feature' was a nuisance and user unfriendly in many ways).
I had plenty of moments where I went to get an email by opening the notification drawer when something else suddenly notified me and I ended up somewhere I didn't want to be like Appy Geek instead.
Also, the fact that it was a tap to open instead of at least a swipe upwards made no sense at all.
I get that you power users are happy to have to practice using your technology like it's some sort of art form, but please save the rest of us the bother.

Agreed, it was a very inconsistent experience. Also, trying to get expandable notifications to work properly with gestures was a pain.
That's what's great about Android on a Nexus device. You get to choose what you like and everyone will be happy.
No one option is better than another. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean someone else should not be using it.
The OP simply wanted to know if it was possible to use Table UI on the N7 v2 and everyone is on a full blown discussion of who prefers what.

I recommend trying out LMT (better than the pie control in paranoid/CM). I find it much better than having this blasted button bar using space all the time)

Apex launcher has a tablet ui setting. For the most part is seems stock just bring the app icons to the bottom in landscape mode along with the app drawer in the upper right corner.
