I've noticed 4 distinct 'scuffs' or 'stains' that appear to be under my glass. I don't know how else to describe them. I didn't notice them when I first got the phone, but you can only see them at a good angle where there's no glare, so the may have always been there. Now I can't *not* notice them. I'll try to post a picture tonight, it's a bit hard to photograph. I think if someone has it they would know what I'm talking about...
Does it kind of look like a gel substance underneath the glass?

Hmmm maybe.. if I took a micro-drop of gel or glue and pressed it.... i'll try to post a pic later tonight.
its the oleophobic coating peeling off i think
Okay here are two pics of two of these things. I have four of them. I scratch and rub them and nothing, as if they are just beneath the surface...
From what I'm seeing it just looks like a scuff or scratch. I had a palm pixie before and it had the same markings on it.. Idk what it is.

I had something similar on my previous Nexus S. I think it's made from steam settling under glass.
I am on my second handset (Sprint) San Antonio, TX and both have had screen issues... I did notice something quite similar to your issue on my current handset but mine resides closer to the ear piece and camera... besides that I'm also experiencing the keyboard ghosting issue very visible when I open my notification menu.... I'm kinda hesitant to get a replacement since thus far my screens issues have only doubled ...

He is correct, mine is doing the same thing. Look at it this way, at least the top of your screen isn't separating, mine flexes'and'goes up and down under minimal pressure and makes all kinds of noise, its weird.

I think this seems to be the most likely scenario from my google research and comparison of other pics. Ugh. Hopefully it won't get worse. What's the replacement/repair policy? Call Samsung or take it to Best Buy ? It's been over 30 days.
Definitely not scuff marks, I keep the thing in a sock and treat it like gold.
I am currently on hold waiting for a rep at Samsung.....it has been 1 hour and 45 minutes and I have not talked to anyone... so if calling Samsung is what you opt to do ... get yourself a samwich and a six pack before hand!!
So I finally got through to a rep.... and they said...
JK... I gave up after 5 hour hold.(seriously) ...and decided the issue was minimal at this point

I have similar problems, except it'll only show if I breath moist air on to it. If you cover it up with a decent screen protector, it should go away unless the mark is really deep.
Today I dropped my Nexus 7 on concrete. I had a cheap folio case on it and had dropped it before, so I wasn't that worried. But then I looked at it. The corner was completely scratched. Needless to say, I'll be buying a case that offers a bit more protection. Anyway, I'm looking for something to make it less noticeable. I know a lot of people have been doing aesthetic mods, so I was hoping someone would be able to help me. My main concern is how I'll smooth down the paint (it's very bumpy right now) on the corner. I'll post a picture below.

The same thing happened to me. It dented and cracked but the screen was fine.

...and people say the screens break easily
Well, the screen was actually covered. If something would have happened to it, I would've died. My case is just horrible and the corners protrude out from it, making them vulnerable but the rest of the tablet protected. That's sort of stupid considering when you drop a device it's almost always going to be hitting a corner. But I guess I learned my lesson the hard way. I wasn't planning on selling my Nexus ever (there's no point if it will be receiving future updates) so I'm not that upset. But just knowing that my perfect Nexus 7 is now imperfect is sort of a bummer.

I doubt there is much you can do to fix it without sanding it down some how and painting it. I will say that the Moko case does an excellent job at protecting the corners of the tablet.
It's started, and should I be worried? Is it worth taking back to comet or fixing myself?

Depends on what you consider 'screen separation'
I've never... ever... in ALL the Nexus 7's i've seen/touched... i've never seen one where the left side of the screen was as perfectly level with the bezel as the right.
Not once (that wasn't modified after).
Do some people claim to have such a mystical device? Yes. But I've never witnessed one.
If the entire screen is like coming up by a noticeable amount, then by all means return it... but I'm pretty happy with my 32gb N7, even with the minor screen lift (which gives the left side a VERY minor spongy feeling) and a very very very small amount of lightbleed that's barely noticeable (on the top, full brightness, below the camera.. pitch black screen)
I DO have a 2yr SquareTrade warranty with ADH coverage, so if it cracks on my or something because of screen flex (you can see ripples on the left side with pressure).. I'm covered... but here's how I look at it; In 5-6 months when something might happen, there will be new Nexus 7's out with numerous build/design improvements, so I feel i'm better off waiting until I have to utilize the warranty (if I need to) instead of just trading it in constantly.. leaving me without a device.. hoping to win the N7 lottery. Did you guys know they changed the Power Management chip on the September and later models? All 32gb have the updated power management chip... it actually makes them incompatible with older roms.. I had no idea!
Screen lift sounds like a better description if I'm honest. You can't see it without really looking hard but I was just thinking if it maybe gets worse.

Take it back and ask for a refund. Then get a 32gb one for the same money.
No brainer really.
Having the glass not seated properly and having the edge of the glass exposed is just not smart engineering, it's going to make the glass more prone to breakage from minor falls. This is what makes me resistant towards buying one of these.. the bezels should protect and enclose the edge of the glass and the glass should be seated evenly when it's thin.. I've seen too many reports of people breaking the glass because of pressure from their thumb, or small drops. Maybe I just need to buy one and not be paranoid, but I'm not going to buy a product that doesn't encase the edges of the glass within the bezel securely. Make it thicker if there's not enough room and the screen is lifting inside the product. I'm not going to encourage bad engineering just so they can claim it's 1/16 of an inch thinner or a few grams lighter.
Oh well just before I decided to take it back, the company I purchased it from has gone into administration (comet here in uk) website is down and all looks bad.
Where do I stand now for my guarantee?

Anyone ever thought about laser-etching a cool pattern on the glass back of their Nexus 4? Any idea how that would turn out, and interact with the "Crystal Reflection"? I was thinking a pattern like the N4 Cruzelite cases.

I would be afraid the back glass would blow apart what with all the "my back glass just shattered out of nowhere threads". Glass that sensitive and you wanna hit it with a laser

Would be niccceeee and exclusive to have that Android etched on the back...

more interesting would be to etch your name and address to it, as a security measure -- like on a car window.

you have a point there.
Wouldn't your warranty be null and void even if you were successful? And those back replacement covers seem to cost a fortune. Would be cool to see someone do something like this though.
I'm thinking that I'll find a piece of glass and practice with the laser etcher I have access to first... In a couple of weeks. Does anybody know if the N4 glass is special in any way? Is the back Gorilla Glass 2 as well?
I'm sure the warranty would be void, yeah. Maybe something to do after the next Nexus comes out, when there's an upgrade option available...

Supposedly it is GG2
its a great idea to personalise your phone
you could very lightly etch it or stratch it in and fill it with transparent adheasive so it would still be strong but noticeable unless you want that glitter.
put your home phone number not your address
Doesn't matter which type of glass it is. mostly they are some kind of borosilicate glass with some additions and protecting layers.
Most important thing to know is which wavelength your laser is emitting and if this wavelength is absorbed by the material of interest. As we all know, glass is usually transparent to visible light (range of 400-800 nm wavelength). So if your laser uses also visible ligth, your etching wont be successfull. Etching with a laser only works, if the light of laser gets absorbed. Thus the energy of the light gets transformed to heat and by that laser ablation works.
look at that graphic for a special borosilicate glass (pyrex) http://www.pgo-online.com/intl/katalog/curves/pyrex_kurve.html
reading this, your laser should be far in the uv light (lambda < 200 nm) or far in the infrared (lambda > 3500 nm)
Good luck!
Edit: I just had a quick search on the gorilla glass. here is some kind of datasheet: http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/sites/all/files/Gorilla Glass 3_PI Sheet 010713.pdf
Here you can also find a transmission spectrum (here it is for gorilla glass 3, but should be valid for gorilla glass 2, too). Looks similar to the one behind the link I posted. so the conclusion remains.
Keep in mind: If you etch any personal information onto it, the resale value plummets, maybe even becomes nonexistent.

I've laser engraved some iPhone 4 backs which I think are gorilla glass. Didn't come out as well as engraving normal glass, so I wouldn't try any intricate details.

I don't see how it can be.... It scratches far too easily.....
The glass seems very thin... to me it looks much thinner than the glass of the iPhone 4.
I wouldn't try my luck~ If you are experienced and know your stuff go ahead though.
Earlier today i was listening to music with my nexus on the table, and i picked it up and it cracked in my hand as soon as i picked it up. There is now a crack going through my camera lense to the other side. I bought it in January and it is rev_11. Would this be covered on warranty since it is a faulty back plate? Thanks in advance. BTW i am in the UK and have purchased it here via the play store. Should i go via LG or Google?
I highly doubt the temperature change can cause the crack.

well i heard a crack after about a second after i picked it up where my fingers lightly picked it up.
Glass is a funny thing. Aside from its low elastic limit, it's actually pretty strong. However, immediately following a scratch, the molecules in the scratched area are excited and prone to shatter (it will always be prone to shatter, but moreso right after a scratch). In your case, I suspect a preexisting or newly formed scratch weakened the glass and caused it to crack under "normal use" circumstances. Interesting fact - scoring and cracking is how sheets of glass are cut to size for windows and mirrors.

Would you think it would be covered via warranty?
It's possible. If the handset is free of any impact damage, they might believe it wasn't dropped or damaged out of negligence. Then again, broken glass on a phone is usually only caused by one thing... and that's not covered under warranty.

There is no impact damage, a couple of scuffs on the bottom and a few scratches. No scuffs on the rubber or on the front thought. Il go throught google first see if i can get a replacement.
So was the table really cold and your hand really hot or the table really hot and your hand really cold. When the N4 starts to warm up, it is climbing towards body temperature. What makes you say it cracked due to a temperature change?

I've seen a few other posts concerning cracked back glass due to temperature change before, and pretty much all of them have been denied warranty repairs. You can try contracting Google to see what they say but I won't expect much.

Ive just got a reply from google:
"Thank you for contacting Google Play Support. I apologize for the inconvenience with your phone. I understand it's cracked. Unfortunately the Google Play warranty doesn't cover cracks. However you may go through LG to get it fixed. Their number is 1-800-243-0000." LG next and if they wont il just get a dbrand skin or something.
probaply they'll exchange back of your nexus, but unfortunatly still you're gonna pay for it
