Best way to fix corner scratches and dings? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today I dropped my Nexus 7 on concrete. I had a cheap folio case on it and had dropped it before, so I wasn't that worried. But then I looked at it. The corner was completely scratched. Needless to say, I'll be buying a case that offers a bit more protection. Anyway, I'm looking for something to make it less noticeable. I know a lot of people have been doing aesthetic mods, so I was hoping someone would be able to help me. My main concern is how I'll smooth down the paint (it's very bumpy right now) on the corner. I'll post a picture below.

The same thing happened to me. It dented and cracked but the screen was fine.

...and people say the screens break easily

Well, the screen was actually covered. If something would have happened to it, I would've died. My case is just horrible and the corners protrude out from it, making them vulnerable but the rest of the tablet protected. That's sort of stupid considering when you drop a device it's almost always going to be hitting a corner. But I guess I learned my lesson the hard way. I wasn't planning on selling my Nexus ever (there's no point if it will be receiving future updates) so I'm not that upset. But just knowing that my perfect Nexus 7 is now imperfect is sort of a bummer.

I doubt there is much you can do to fix it without sanding it down some how and painting it. I will say that the Moko case does an excellent job at protecting the corners of the tablet.

[Q] Why is there so many different skins?

Off the top of my head I can think of
Spigen, xo, zagg, xtremeguard, skinomi, and problably more than I'm forgetting
Is something like spigen really worth the money to get? or should i just go with xtremeguard?
I know almost everyone has had a good experience with at least one of these companies, I'd like an un-biased as possible appraisal of the situation. Thank you.
I got an Xtremeguard for my Nexus 7 during the summer and when i got it it was obviously damaged. There was printer paper stuck to the adhesive of the protector and a dimple in the protector. It was pretty much unusable. I emailed them and got a refund no problem.
Yesterday I put an XO skin on my Nexus 4 and I think it's a pretty decent one. It feels weird but I guess I can deal with it. I got the set that's for the front and back. They are kind of expensive at 22$ but I guess it's a worth while investment considering the phone was 400$.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I can vouch for XO as I am using one right now and I love it. Most people agree that the rubbery feel goes away soon and it starts feeling pretty smooth.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
well the point is i can find at least 5+ people who can vouch for any skin, I want someone who has had like 5 or 6 skins and has an opinion as to which ones are easiest to install, longest life, hardest to scratch, doesn't have any bubbles the longest, etc etc
thank you for your replies though
All of the 3Mesque ones (rubbery texture/wet application) to me have the best feel and durability BUT I've never gotten one one without bubbles/dust/whatever getting stuck underneath (and that includes the ones where I made the soap solution, turned my shower onto full hot and let the bathroom get steamy to minimize dust.)
Now the cheap "hard" plastic (same feel as the normal glass/dry application) ones I get off ebay have been the easiest to install but they also scratch faster and have a tendency to lose the "stickiness" after a few months, they also usually have the worst fitment.
I attached pictures of both kinds so you can see how to differentiate, personally because of trying screen protectors for YEARS and always being disappointed I just go naked now. TPU case + no screen protector served me well on my HD2, Sensation and now my N4.

Cracked the glass in my s3: recommend some options?

I got my s3 in September and recently it fell out of my pocket (less than two feet from the ground) and the corner cracked all the way up the side. Right around where the back "button" is. It is hardly on the screen so its not really in the way, but its still very annoying to look at.
As I see it I have a few options
I can bring it into Telus and they can replace the entire screen which would cost me like $250 or so. Because I went to them and they said that they do not do glass only repairs.
I can try to replace the screen myself. I'm sure I would be able to do it, even though I have seen a few videos and it looks quite tedious and risky.
I could try calling Samsung and seeing if they would do anything about it. I have heard a story of someone calling and they did replace it. I imagine I would have to do some pouting and complain about how they said they're gorilla glass was phenomenal. Please let me know if this has worked for you.
And my last option would be leaving it the way it is and waiting for it to spread even more. (Not a fan of this one)
Also since I'm here, can anyone recommend a sturdy yet slim case for the s3? I'm not a huge fan of the otter box but I would like something fairly strong and not too expensive. Links would be great!
Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Well for that I'm sure they could say they never said it was shatter proof and it's still glass
I know, but a foot and a half? It should be able to withstand something so minor, this is "regular use". Maybe I should sue the company that makes my pants for having such tiny pockets.

I would be writing a nice polite letter to Samsung first a letter not email .

any insurance?

Drop anything made of glass onto a solid floor and there's an excellent chance it will break, especially on the corners. Good luck with getting it fixed but a £3 rubber boot from Amazon will protect all the corners but only add 2mm to the thickness.

Black One issues

Hello all, I just wanted to share this with everyone. I'm loving my black one, it's absolutely perfect! At least, that's what I thought until 30 minutes ago. As you can see in the title I've been having some problems with my black one. I know there already is a thread "black one not suitable for daily use", or something similar, but a lot of posts in that thread are being treated as trolls and this is a bIt different (no dents or chipping in the corners like the others, but on the back itself)
First of all, it attracts fingerprints VERY easily. Though this is a known problem and I knew this before actually receiving it (and it isn't such a big issue for me), it is worth mentioning (again) for people who still can't decide between silver and black. For me personally, this issue is completely worth it as black is BEAUTIFUL.
Second, a bigger issue, the black is coming off. I've had it for two days (just two!!!) and I can see silver. These are just dots, and they look just like dust. At first I even thought it was dust, but that was until I tried to clean it (first with my shirt, that didn't help so then I grabbed a moist cloth, which didn't work either so I then made the already moist cloth a bit wetter. No difference! hell, I even tried soap that's how desperate I am ). I will attach a photo, but it isn't very good quality because I made it using my One and a dirty mirror. Everything I didn't circle is dust, so you can see how much it looks like dust.
Now you're probably wondering what the hell I did with it, and the answer is completely nothing abnormal. I kept it in the official case when it was going in my pocket or when I was outside, and it got out of the case in it's full glory when at home and at work during breaks. I didn't drop it, it was in my pocket with nothing else (well, just the case), and I have been extremely careful with it, I didn't even let others hold it for more than a minute. What I'm gonna do now is look if it really really really isn't just dust with some more cleaning, then I'll look if a permanent marker hides it and either way I'll buy a skin for it (not a case, I already have one, and my pouch is still on its way, but a skin like a screen protector but for the back too) any suggestions for a good one?
Anyway, this is a warning for anyone considering/owning the back wish me luck with hiding the silver!

Permanent black marker has been mentioned elsewhere, that should do it.

Yea I read that too, but my concern is that it will be another color (slightly darker/lighter) and still be noticeable. Ah well, still better than silver dots on black but it still shouldn't happen IMO. I'm starting to think the case is the cause, because it now has 2 more of those dots after taking it out of the case again

Totally agree that it shouldn't happen, especially just taking it out of a case. I have decided not to have a case for the first time ever, if I get scratches then so be it, adds character to the phone

Wow! Ok I'll be honest at first I thought the issue is only happening on the speaker grill but seeing this. If anyone other than you posted some more issues like this then I am gonna be quite dissappointed on the anodization process of HTC now. Production issue is a good reason for having thin anodized layers but this thin is already way too bad.
I will still be giving HTC a benefit of the doubt here considering that you're the 1st one to post this. It could be a factory defect or there must be some specs of hard object in the case/pocket big enough to damage the back.
Do you have the double dip case? If so, the case's hard plastic inner section can scratch the phone when going on or coming off. Or, as the other user suggests, ensure you don't have dust ir sand particles in your case.
Currently interchangeably using HTC One, BBZ10 and Note 2
The double dip case is awful it gets sand and grit in it very easily. I have managed to scratch my silver version (couldn't wait for the black) on the front around the top of the speaker and several places on the back and side. I actually bought the case before I even had my phone that's how eager I was to protect it. Nothing makes your heart sink more than when you slide the case from your phone and you feel it grind on some grit. I now have it in an otterbox defender (this also has its own issues )

Now I know for sure that the official case was the problem. I haven't put it on anymore and there are no more of those silver dots appearing. I really advise not to buy that case!

Now that is a massive fail if the official case is causing it to scratch, I would contact HTC and see about a replacement and get a refund on the case, totally unacceptable.

Reaaon i never considered the black one. Same thing happened on 3 iphone 5's i had. Its a limitation of the material/process imho. Htc Apple doesnt matter black anodized aluminum is coming of easy

plating quality

Hi,
I own a Note3 for about 6 months and the chrome plating around the bezel is all worn out and flaking already. I never dropped the phone and I am always very careful with my stuff. For example my Galaxy S with 4 years of use doesn't have a single scratch and the finishing is "as new"
I would like to know what's the opinion out there on the cosmetics quality, I think the phone is great but the hardware, at least in my unit, is not up to scratch.
Do Samsung take care of this? anyone seeing it can tell that the phone hasn't been misused
I have mine for almost 9 months now. The rim looks good as news as well as the whole body, no visible scratch. I use it as it is, without a case. I only have a glass screen protector. I do get mindful where I place my phone though.

Hand sanitizer can mess up stuff, has ethanol
As said, this is the first time I have problems with electroplated plastic. I'm usually very careful with my things. I don't use hand sanitizer nor I am a sweaty person.
Well, maybe I just got a lemon

Im not really agree on the OP of that link thread. Basically the OP only try to make the plate look great. Not really fix it.

The Damage Thread. Have you defiled your phone's appearance yet?

So I just woke up to a knick on the side of my phone this morning. Nothing major by any stretch but nevertheless if your like me it bothers you to death and you can't stop looking at it. So I'm wondering if anyone else out there has make a mark on their baby yet. (Side note: the fake metal sides are cheap af. I tested it by lightly tapping my cast, I broke my wrist, and it left a Mark that won't come off. Come on LG even my samsung plastic held up better.)
i got a small crack near the mic opening on the bottom..doesnt bother me that much..hoping to exchange it when the nexus x comes out..if it is better
Dropped from a foot and the screen cracked and doesnt work. Saying that i have insurance so i got a new one

I dropped mine from about 2.5 feet and it put one long crack through the screen and nothing to one side of it worked. $156 LCD/digitizer replacement through LG. I feel your pain.
Edit: I forgot to mention this happened with the Spigen Slim Armor case on.

Haha, the other day I was driving a fork lift truck at work like I usually do and I guess I was going to fast when I hit a bump and my phone flew to where my feet was and then to the ground face down. Luckily the only damage done was a tiny nick to the screen that you can't even tell it's there unless I point it out. It was bugging me to death the first few hours but now I barely notice it. Can't be seen with screen on either. I was rather disappointed to. I have a phone cover on it and it shouldn't of gotten scratched but oh well. It could of been worse.
I have some hits on the frame around the screen, 2 scratches on back cover and 2 more barely noticable on the screen. That's it.
The world played out in slow motion the first time I dropped my phone. At this point though there are a few very minor scratches along the edge of the phone around the screen.
hairline crack across the bottom microphone. NEVER dropped it. Do you guys confirm this is a more widespread issue?
yeah I've got tiny scratches on the back... barely visible
but the bizarre thing is that I'm pretty friendly with how I use the phone...I never dropped it yet.. using a thin back case..
weird...I think LG should work better on durability...

Same thing. Dropped it once while drunk but even before that I had these weird little scratches on the back. No clue where they are from.
Hairline crack at IR port. Will try and get a free replacement in a couple of weeks using warranty
Had my phone bare naked for few weeks and dropped if few times, had in my pocket with keys and change. No scratches or anything anywhere. I don't even think I'll be getting a screen protector since this baby is one tough son of a female dog.

Wow... With SPIGEN on dude? I always thought that those cases were awesome.
It must have landed on a corner.
I just got the same case today. I could see it not providing much protection if it lands on the ground on the corners. The top and back are just rubber.
I love the case though. Not sure how much protection it offers from drops.

So did I. The case is nice and doesn't add bulk. It would probably offer more protection if it were a little softer rubber.

Jesus, i bought one of those but I hasn't arrived so far. I using a regular tpu case
It's still a great case and I think it provides decent protection unless dropped in a certain way.
The case looks beautiful and I love the way the camera is separated from the volume.
I'm happy with it so far and still much better than bare bones.
