Back crack due to tempriture change? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Earlier today i was listening to music with my nexus on the table, and i picked it up and it cracked in my hand as soon as i picked it up. There is now a crack going through my camera lense to the other side. I bought it in January and it is rev_11. Would this be covered on warranty since it is a faulty back plate? Thanks in advance. BTW i am in the UK and have purchased it here via the play store. Should i go via LG or Google?

I highly doubt the temperature change can cause the crack.

well i heard a crack after about a second after i picked it up where my fingers lightly picked it up.

Glass is a funny thing. Aside from its low elastic limit, it's actually pretty strong. However, immediately following a scratch, the molecules in the scratched area are excited and prone to shatter (it will always be prone to shatter, but moreso right after a scratch). In your case, I suspect a preexisting or newly formed scratch weakened the glass and caused it to crack under "normal use" circumstances. Interesting fact - scoring and cracking is how sheets of glass are cut to size for windows and mirrors.

Would you think it would be covered via warranty?

It's possible. If the handset is free of any impact damage, they might believe it wasn't dropped or damaged out of negligence. Then again, broken glass on a phone is usually only caused by one thing... and that's not covered under warranty.

There is no impact damage, a couple of scuffs on the bottom and a few scratches. No scuffs on the rubber or on the front thought. Il go throught google first see if i can get a replacement.

So was the table really cold and your hand really hot or the table really hot and your hand really cold. When the N4 starts to warm up, it is climbing towards body temperature. What makes you say it cracked due to a temperature change?

The table was about room temperature however i have the flu so i have a high temperature if 2c makes a difference? lol

I've seen a few other posts concerning cracked back glass due to temperature change before, and pretty much all of them have been denied warranty repairs. You can try contracting Google to see what they say but I won't expect much.

Ive just got a reply from google:
"Thank you for contacting Google Play Support. I apologize for the inconvenience with your phone. I understand it's cracked. Unfortunately the Google Play warranty doesn't cover cracks. However you may go through LG to get it fixed. Their number is 1-800-243-0000." LG next and if they wont il just get a dbrand skin or something.

probaply they'll exchange back of your nexus, but unfortunatly still you're gonna pay for it

That's why you gotta do a lateral spin toss on the bed. The spin will prevent the phone from bouncing off to far/high.
I dropped mine about 5 feet onto hardwood, not a single scratch. Already ordered screen protector since there's no gorilla glass :-(

If the screen quality is the same as the Nexus One's or the MT4G's (both of which don't have gorilla glass) then I'm not worried about scratching it since I've put my N1 through hell and the screen is still flawless.
What the NS has that the N1 doesn't, however, is the oleophobic coating, which seems to be half-assed, not like the iPhone's. I've already noticed a few spots where it's worn off, and I'm quite certain it'll be the same no matter how many times I exchange it. That's the only reason I'd get a screen protector... to prevent the coating from rubbing off, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the coating in the first place doesn't it. Also, a screen protector would look ugly as hell on the NS since the edges are rounded and the screen protector wouldn't stick there, causing lost of dust build up.

I dropped my Nexus S on concrete and it landed on its face. I picked it up and there wasn't a single scratch on the display because of the curved screen. There was only scratches on the outside of the display where the plastic is. I was amazed. Took it to Best Buy and got a new one though cause I hate having any scratches at all.

I dropped my phone on accident cuz it slipped out of my phone clip, when i picked it up it had a small deep scratch on the screen and another slight scratch. it fell on tile and happened on new years eve before the countdown. I was pissed, but what the hell, that's why I have bb's black tie protection for now i'm just enjoying the helll out of it, then i'll return it for another when I feel like making the trip.

weird scuff or something under glass?

I've noticed 4 distinct 'scuffs' or 'stains' that appear to be under my glass. I don't know how else to describe them. I didn't notice them when I first got the phone, but you can only see them at a good angle where there's no glare, so the may have always been there. Now I can't *not* notice them. I'll try to post a picture tonight, it's a bit hard to photograph. I think if someone has it they would know what I'm talking about...
Does it kind of look like a gel substance underneath the glass?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Hmmm maybe.. if I took a micro-drop of gel or glue and pressed it.... i'll try to post a pic later tonight.
its the oleophobic coating peeling off i think
Okay here are two pics of two of these things. I have four of them. I scratch and rub them and nothing, as if they are just beneath the surface...
From what I'm seeing it just looks like a scuff or scratch. I had a palm pixie before and it had the same markings on it.. Idk what it is.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I had something similar on my previous Nexus S. I think it's made from steam settling under glass.
I am on my second handset (Sprint) San Antonio, TX and both have had screen issues... I did notice something quite similar to your issue on my current handset but mine resides closer to the ear piece and camera... besides that I'm also experiencing the keyboard ghosting issue very visible when I open my notification menu.... I'm kinda hesitant to get a replacement since thus far my screens issues have only doubled ...

I think this seems to be the most likely scenario from my google research and comparison of other pics. Ugh. Hopefully it won't get worse. What's the replacement/repair policy? Call Samsung or take it to Best Buy ? It's been over 30 days.
Definitely not scuff marks, I keep the thing in a sock and treat it like gold.
I am currently on hold waiting for a rep at Samsung.....it has been 1 hour and 45 minutes and I have not talked to anyone... so if calling Samsung is what you opt to do ... get yourself a samwich and a six pack before hand!!
So I finally got through to a rep.... and they said...
JK... I gave up after 5 hour hold.(seriously) ...and decided the issue was minimal at this point

I have similar problems, except it'll only show if I breath moist air on to it. If you cover it up with a decent screen protector, it should go away unless the mark is really deep.

Screen cracked!

So..I dropped my lovely new TMO sgs3 from about 10-12 inches onto a hard surface. The screen cracked in two places from the left to the right side. LCD is fine but glass is fully cracked. It seems that this is beyond unacceptable for "gorilla glass."
I called Tmobile customer service who were useless and suggested a pay $150 for an insurance replacement.
What should I do guys? Do I go to Samsung? The retailer (Walmart)?

How is it a defect, because you dropped your phone and the GLASS cracked? Bad luck? Yes. Defect? No. Even Gorilla Glass can crack. It is not invulnerable to damage resulting from drops. There is nobody to run to, as the damage is a result of your handling/mishandling of the device. There is nobody to foot that bill except for you. Sorry it happened, but that's just how it goes. Sometimes you can drop your phone and get lucky, and sometimes you drop it, and you aren't so lucky. It all depends on how it falls, and what it falls on.

He cant sell the phone because asurion will ask for the phone back. The only thing you can do is pay the deductible for a new phone. Even though its gorilla glass, once you drop it on that certain angle the screen will definitely crack.

If you used a credit card to purchase the phone and it provides warranty coverage you should check to see if accidental damage is covered. I know my card covers loss/damage for the 1st 90 days in addition to extending the normal warranty.
ETA: You can keep the phone and later see if you can purchase replacement glass. Sell it after fixing it.

He's right. It's common sense to know that the bigger the screen on the phone the more prone it will be to damage. Having a 4.8" screen is amazing but it also makes the phone very fragile. Gorilla Glass 2 to my understanding is basically there to protect the screen from light damage such as scratches/scuffs. Sadly you had a case of bad luck, dropped your phone, and the screen cracked.
There's nothing more to it than you need to be a little more careful next time with such an expensive device. Considering the phone outright sells for $600 I don't think $150 is that bad for a replacement. Good luck.
I agree with everybody on here and to be honest it was your fault. You should of gotten a case of some sort.
I hope you get your phone fixed/replaced.
it does seem this phone is more prone to screen damage than others before it to be honest.....I have personally seen my Samsung Fascinate and Charge take falls from several feet to concrete and spend all their time in a pocket with keys and get tossed around and never even suffered a scratch or crack.....and all that with no case or screen protector either.....

Also depends on your life, like me i work under houses, in attics, tight places with dirt, dust and damp areas. A tough case like the otterbox ones is a must for my line of work.

Lost some repect for my GN10.1

I dropped my tabby lightly today (something that Doesn't happen). despite it being in a case, I managed to scratch the corner up pretty nasty and unclip the clips holding the back plate in the corner. Wow.
A few minutes later totally unrelated (I hope), I felt that the center of my screen very warm. I took off the case to check the temperature in the back, behind the case where it cant ventilate and Wow! it's running hot! mostly Under the ffc and close to the left side of the tablet holding it landscape. I wasn't even doing anything heavy.
So yeah. I love this thing but I gotta say. I hate the choice of materials here Samsung, Plastic just isn't right for a 500 $ flagship. I gotta say, I'm pretty amazed with the gps on this thing though. .. I know it wouldn't be possible without the plastic construction. I gotta wonder why the compass is so bad though.

If it were a metal back that's tightly bonded to the frame your post would be about how easily the screen cracks. My OG G-Tab 10.1 got run over by an "excuse the cart" after it fell out of my briefcase at DFW airport. It survived unscathed. You spin the wheel and take your chances.

I wouldn't have another metal one. They don't give for the screen and moreover, just check how poor wifi and gps signals are on tablets that are made of all metal... such as the TF201... or even more famous tablets...
Well how about wood? Jk idk.. maybe thicker plastic, or a metal structure/bezel with plastic for the back. The iPad feels pretty solid though so idk if metal is always bad.

Well from what I understand though I am not an expert on this the plastic material is better then metals on Ipad as it can absorb most of the shock bot none the less because of the weight of the tablet you will damage it no matter how lightly it is dropped but that said I have a micromax tablet which has been droped kicked around by my sisters kids to an extent where the casing has cracked but tablet is still running
I sugguest you look at rubber casing because they have the tendency to absorb shock more then anything else only draw back they do not look fancy

once and forever: Samsung devices are cased in polycarbonate and not plastic !!!!!! And this material is used in aircraft and space engineering, it is light and robust and exceeds cheap aluminum in most parameters !!!!!!

I do not know how you define plastic, but that sounds like plastic. It is the other way around. We are flying in plastic planes . And I do not think that planes are built out of the same polycarbonates than this tablet. That is far too simplistic.

For sure the note 10.1 feels like the cheapest device I have ever got , (in materials and build quality) specially the back blue plastic cover, but if it wasn't made like this it would have been allot heavier and very expensive so get a silicon case or something for it, forget about its build quality and enjoy the real power underhood

I tested it by lightly tapping my cast, I broke my wrist, and it left a Mark that won't come off. Come on LG even my samsung plastic held up better.)
i got a small crack near the mic opening on the bottom..doesnt bother me that much..hoping to exchange it when the nexus x comes out..if it is better
Dropped from a foot and the screen cracked and doesnt work. Saying that i have insurance so i got a new one

Yea I'm excited to see what it offers unfortunately I'm on Big Red, not by choice, just no other carriers have coverage beyond 2g in my area.

Well that's a plus. I'm sure that deposit sucked but at least you got spiffy new looking phone.

I dropped mine from about 2.5 feet and it put one long crack through the screen and nothing to one side of it worked. $156 LCD/digitizer replacement through LG. I feel your pain.
Edit: I forgot to mention this happened with the Spigen Slim Armor case on.

Haha, the other day I was driving a fork lift truck at work like I usually do and I guess I was going to fast when I hit a bump and my phone flew to where my feet was and then to the ground face down. Luckily the only damage done was a tiny nick to the screen that you can't even tell it's there unless I point it out. It was bugging me to death the first few hours but now I barely notice it. Can't be seen with screen on either. I was rather disappointed to. I have a phone cover on it and it shouldn't of gotten scratched but oh well. It could of been worse.
I have some hits on the frame around the screen, 2 scratches on back cover and 2 more barely noticable on the screen. That's it.
The world played out in slow motion the first time I dropped my phone. At this point though there are a few very minor scratches along the edge of the phone around the screen.
hairline crack across the bottom microphone. NEVER dropped it. Do you guys confirm this is a more widespread issue?
yeah I've got tiny scratches on the back... barely visible
but the bizarre thing is that I'm pretty friendly with how I use the phone...I never dropped it yet.. using a thin back case..
weird...I think LG should work better on durability...
Even though the back of the G3 looks and feels great

Same thing. Dropped it once while drunk but even before that I had these weird little scratches on the back. No clue where they are from.
Hairline crack at IR port. Will try and get a free replacement in a couple of weeks using warranty
Had my phone bare naked for few weeks and dropped if few times, had in my pocket with keys and change. No scratches or anything anywhere. I don't even think I'll be getting a screen protector since this baby is one tough son of a female dog.

Wow... With SPIGEN on dude? I always thought that those cases were awesome.
It must have landed on a corner.
I just got the same case today. I could see it not providing much protection if it lands on the ground on the corners. The top and back are just rubber.
I love the case though. Not sure how much protection it offers from drops.

You probably got dirt grains in between the case and phone.

So did I. The case is nice and doesn't add bulk. It would probably offer more protection if it were a little softer rubber.

Yep, right on the corner. Funny how Spigen advertises "Absolute Drop Protection" and "Air cushion corners". Lol

Jesus, i bought one of those but I hasn't arrived so far. I using a regular tpu case
It's still a great case and I think it provides decent protection unless dropped in a certain way.
The case looks beautiful and I love the way the camera is separated from the volume.
I'm happy with it so far and still much better than bare bones.

I ran an apple background for a little while. That's all the defiling so far.
