Nexus 7 laggy no matter what! - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No matter what ROM/kernel combo it lags like crazy. My wife's nook is faster at times! I'm thinking bad hardware.... What do you guys think?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

You have to provide more details than that. There are a hundred different things that can make the tablet lag.
A fool proof thing to do would be to just format the thing, restore it to stock, and start from scratch. I use Paranoid Android 3.0 with the Faux Ultimate Kernel and I have no idea what lag is. But then again, I didn't have it on stock ROM/Kernel, either. So maybe you're doing something wrong or just haven't tweaked it efficiently?

I am no noob to any of this, my 7 is my second nexus device and it seems no matter what combo I flash its laggy. Like very laggy. I have the same apps installed on my GN and have no problem out of any of them. I did a full wipe including SD card awhile back and it seemed to be better for awhile but its right back to crawling again

Do a factory reset and flash Carbon ROM and use Nova Launcher, in developer options set window animation, and transition animation and animator duration scales to off, and then you will see a vast difference, also freeze any apps you don't use in Titanium backup

Just seems so extreme to have a "working device", shouldn't be the case. I would return it or do a full wipe and flash a custom ROM close to stock. I'm running PA with lean, its beast!!!

Does anyone else notice this?

Im on stock rom and I realized their is a lot of lag when going through the home screen. I only have a couple widgets and icons..does anyone else have this?
what launcher are you using? mines is smooth as butter using ADW EX.
Im using the stock launcher
Yeah I also started to notice it. Very heavy lag too. I switched back to Launcher Pro Plus and no problems yet.

I had that with cm7 with gb launcher, went back to miui lol

I'm on the stock rom stock kernel stock launcher. My homescreen is good even with the. nexus live wallpaper. I've always found adw to lag. This is y I always return to stock.
i only get that problem when i have a live wallpaper on. that will slow down the screen big time. other then that im all gravy baby
The only lag I have is when I first boot my phone. If I try and move anything on my screen I get told that launcherpro has stopped responding... I click "wait" and 15 seconds later were gold. Annoying yes, deal breaker...no

I've been doing it a bit lately flashing new nightly's and showing off the CM7 3D boot animation to people lol. But yeah it's whatever I suppose
I Used to have the same issue, regardingless if I'm ussing ADW/LIVE-Wallpaper/GO Launcher or something like that. After reinstalling my device on Saturday it works smooth as a new car
On the boot the media scanner slows the phone to a crawl that last longer the more on your sd card you can improve the speed by deleting the folder android from the root of your sd card then reboot. Sometimes the gallery thumbnails get corrupt
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I get it sometimes. The best temporary fixes are to use a different launcher like ADW or LP or change the CPU governor.
ICS should enable hardware acceleration of the home screen, which will eliminate this problem, but we won't be seeing that for ~6 months.

[Q] Sick of the lag, what do I need to do?

I searched a bit but didn't find much. I am unlocked and rooted, but stock ROM. I just wiped and reinstalled 4.2.2, but the lag is till there!!! Can this be fixed by flashing a different kernel? I don't mind the stock ROM, but if I can flash a different ROM and get rid of the lag then I'll do that too! Thanks in advance!!
I'm using stock; what works form me is enabling developers option by tapping build number a couple of times. And in developers option scroll down under apps. And in apps background processes limit I selected no back ground processes. Everything has gotten faster for me. If anybody has another way let me know too.

I'll give it a shot! I'm willing to try anything at this point!
OK cool, and if you figure out a different way to make it faster let me know. I use this method to make google chrome a bit faster since loading websites would drag. It made it a bit faster.

Disable Google Currents and any other apps you don't need. See what apps are running in the background and get rid of the ones you don't really need, including widgets. Have only one user account. Turn off animations.
Sent from XDA app
Also set animations in developer options to 0.5. Stock lags IMO. I would back it up and try a different rom. Rasbean is pretty fast.

TW Lag an phone Lag...

No matter what TW Rom I'm in I get lag either scrolling thru the main screens or in the menu..Only does it on TWlauncher...well also here an there I get lag..really like this phone but not real impressed with performance...

Run an aosp/cm/aokp for now and the lag will be gone. Or you can run a rebloated touvhwiz ROM. Or run a custom kernel and overclock. Or just get a different phone if it bugs you that much.

My suggestion is to upgrade to MDL (if you haven't already) and flash a custom TW kernel. This makes a world of difference over stock for smoothness and battery life is still great (depending on the kernel settings used). Other thing you can try is lowering the animation scale in developer options.
How I find Developer options lol

In About Phone tap your build number 7 times to unlock dev options. Then hit the back button tap dev options and scroll down, if you don't want any animations just turn the three off.
Never had lag issue with the S3 or the note on TW...Samsung really needs to get this phone running like butter right out of the box ya know...

It takes time. The gs3 was not smooth and neither was the gs2 when it first came out. And with updates it slowly becomes better. Be patient.

i had some bad lag when i was stock.. but now that im running a custom rom and kernel it is just about gone now.. yea i kno people shouildnt have to flash a custom kernel or rom to get rid of the lag but im sure samsung will fix soon
Ya I'm rooted running premium ROM using nova launcher...but this phone should not lag at all...there has to be a major update coming from Samsung I would think...lol for this nice of a phone...

You can always flash the crossbreeder mod....it eliminated all lag on my phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113150
Ya I did the developer options transition scale trick that helped with two launcher lag but I still get a ton when writing long emails in TBD stock email app. A lot of times the keyboard can't keep up AMD gets stuck behind after about a paragraph of typing. Super annoying.

It personally sickens me that we have to do anything to this phone to get it to work well for us. Samsung needs to fix these issues and make this phone fly like it should with the hardware in it. No changing developer options or using a custom kernel or tweaking.

Very much agreed. i personally have minimal lag....there obviously should be none. Hopefully when the next update finally drops the lag will be taken care of.
I had the same issue but once I rooted, removed bloat, disabled some apps and installed a custom kernel all the lag is gone. I'm running No Frills CPU to control the CPU and I have it set at Max 1998GHz, Min 378MHz, Governor= Performance, I/O scheduler= deadline. Not having any issues with battery either. Works Great!
Also I noticed that S Voice was never mentioned. You have to uninstall it or make it so the home button doesn't activate it.
I'm running ktoonz 7/2 kernel with all his settings. Wow it gets rid of all the lag. Plus the phone don't run so hot like it does stock. Nice and cool and fast. I get 24-30+ hours before battery swap. I was also very pissed that out of the box this phone is kind of ****ty. Thanks to our great devs its fixed

Revert to touch wiz and unroot

Hey everyone,
So I'm new to android and I decided to switch my i337m gs4 over to the Google edition. I'm pretty happy with it but the battery life is almost half of what touch wiz was.
I'm now wondering if there is anyway to revert my gs4 back to the original touchwiz and unroot the phone.
Sorry if this has already been answered!
Thanks
If you're sorry if its been answered maybe you should search?

Thanks! Worked perfectly.
Sincerly, I think Touchwiz is better than Holo. I don't know why people want Google's Holo UI on their Touchwiz mobile. Touchwiz UI is just awesome. Full of colors, nicer interface, more performance and as he said better battery backup. Samsung device users should be proud of their mobile's UI interface.

I like touch wiz but it is so dang bloated stock the device is slower then it should be by far. I also like the holo color scheme though and dislike the default colors of touchwiz. Aka why I use GOLDENEYE with some theming. But I think touchwiz is a decent layout it just needs tweaked a lurker bit more.

I know samsung has some useless stuff. But instead of changing ROM you can remove them from /system. High-end devices with latest Touchwiz5 UI never lags. Even the new Galaxy Young which has Touchwiz5 ICS UI has rarely lag.
Why in the world you dare to request more performance for your SGS4?!?! Thats the best device by far

Maybe the best but on stock the device still studders some and lags. I flashed GOLDENEYE and it runs much better than stock. It just goes to show that even a device as grand as the S4 can still be made to run better with better software.

Is stock good enough for you?

Hey N4 users, how many of you are satisfied with stock 4.3?
I used to flash ROMs but I typically just stay on stock 4.3 now. I use a quick settings mod to add more tiles and an extended power menu mod to get reboot options. Other than that stock is all I need.

Flashed many roms ,tried about 6-7 roms and I realized that stock is good enough for me. I'm using battery % mod + advanced reboot ,it's enough.
I really enjoy with 4.3 stock rom.
Never was.

Honestly, not a fan of the Nav bars, so no Stock for me. I feel that they take up more space than they should. I ♥ extra screen space.

I use an app called fullscreen, and stock rom is fine after a few personalisation tweaks (playing with MUIU theme icons currently). Oh yeah..Pie Control App, Power Toggles, etc...apps really can extend usefulness like roms do, just have to hunt for them.
I need the long press navbar action, and better toggles.
Instead of flashing different mod a custom Rom is much easier.
Not for me. I like the extras, changes under the hood, ect the custom ROMs bring.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yes. I've run stock on my phones since the Galaxy Nexus was released. I don't have the desire to do the custom ROM song and dance when stock does everything I want it to do.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I'm very satisfied with stock! The only issue is I wish with the default launcher you could change the pages, that's my only complaint... I wish I didn't have to use apex on top of default...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Generally speaking I would say yes, stock is great, but there are aspects to using something like Paranoid Android (lubz me some PIE) as well as CyanogenMod (volume rockers to change songs is something I simply cannot live without these days), so generally I will use a device for a period of time when it's new to my ownership stock, then do the research and find a custom ROM to try out, then another if needed, then tweaks (custom kernels, undervolting, etc).
Same old same old as everyone else for the most part I suppose.
i had mine for 9 months before i decided to try a custom ROM...
The nexus 4 is the only android phone I've owned and kept as stock which is kind of ironic.

I completely agree. My previous phone was a SGS2 and I flashed a new ROM the day I got mine. My N4 however I have decided to keep stock since 4.3 was released and so far I have been pleased.

Custom ROMs are significantly and noticeably faster and more responsive. Besides on stock lte is broken...

after i unwrapped it, my phone was stock long enough to download a custom rom. kinda like when you first installed windows and you use IE long enough to download chrome or firefox. same idea
I'm on stock right now

On stock ROM now and while I do miss the volume rocker buttons and expanded lockscreen on custom roms, I am also happy without it.
I've been waiting for CM 10.2 Stable...so I guess that answers that.
Stock... No need for custom Roms anymore. Hell even the stock kernel is good now.
