Note 10.1 Sighting - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

I just saw a white galaxy note 10.1 in an ABC news report that aired on GMA about "Gallon smashing". The reporter was using the note to playback video's of kids gallon smashing for shoppers at a grocery store that have never seen or heard of this new fad.
will be at the 1:10 mark in video

It's sure is nice to see something other that an iPad on network TV.
Has anyone else seen the Galaxy note 10.1 on a TV show??
.

Yep, it was a month or so ago but the queen was holding a white one in her hands.... Was on the news, in the newspapers (titled "the queen has a tablet and its not an Ipad") and all over youtube and here....

Just saw the note 10.1 on the cooperators commercial, think itd an insurance company

It was also used throughout Bigg Boss season 6 (indian tv program).

You can see the Note 10.1 in quite a few korean tv shows as well, the most recent one that I noticed (because it's actively airing) is 7th Grade Civil Servant (7급 공무원) where the main male lead is using it to study for the civil exam in several scenes
I believe it's also the tablets that are used whenever some form of "tabular interaction" is needed on the (korean) show Running Man (or they are using Galaxy Tabs, but I remember at least one episode where they are using S-pens)

In the first post, how do you know it was not a white Tab 2?
The only way to rule out that it is not a white tab 2 is to actually see the pen. That said, I haven't seen another Note 10.1 in my areas. For all I know I may be the only one... However, I see tons of Tab 2s and Tab 7s; and of course the iPad. From the front, it is really difficult to say whether you are seeing is a Note 10 or a Tab 2. Maybe some of those tablets I've seen are Note 10s, but hard to say, unless I get a glance at the bottom right corner for the pen or the back...

I don't really care as long as its a Samsung tablet.
It's great that the public can see that there is another great tablets out there that doesn't have an i in it's name.

The silver bezel is alot chunkier on the note 10., especially down the sides.... if you've seen a note 10.1 and a tab2 side by side, its quite easy to tell which is which after that

Galaxy Tab 8.9

I realize this is the 10.1 forum, but it seems like the best place to ask... any news?
I found this today which doesn't sound good:
http://english.etnews.co.kr/news/detail.html?id=201106090001
Samsung Electronics Applies Two Different Touch Screens to Galaxy Tab 8.9
2011/06/09 By Lee Hyeong-soo
Samsung Electronics is finding itself in a dilemma concerning its super-slim tablet PC, the Galaxy Tab 8.9, made rather in a hurry to catch up with Apple’s i-Pad2.
The product succeeded in becoming the world’s slimmest smart pad, as thin as 8.6mm, thanks to the touch screen integrated with tempered glass called G1F. The thickness of i-Pad2 is 8.8mm. Nevertheless, Samsung is having difficulty actually putting it on the market owing to the low process yield ratios of its key components. If this situation goes on, the electronics giant’s plan to sell 10 million units of tablet PCs this year might be affected, too.
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 incorporates both the G1F and GFF (glass fiber filter) technologies. Earlier, Samsung was intending to select two local panel makers and kick off the manufacturing of the new tablet PC from late this month. However, the yield problem arose, resulting in some shortage of components. The corporation had to take drastic measures, bringing in two GFF panel manufacturers additionally. In short, the same tablet PC model takes two different types of touch screens.
A GFF-type touch panel is 30% to 40% thicker than its G1F counterpart. Moreover, the former’s light transmittance is lower than the latter’s, which means the display performance is poorer. “There is nothing certain about the specifications of the 8.9-inch version of the product with the 10.1-inch model having yet to hit the market,” said Samsung.

No it doesn't sound good. When I Samsung announced the new 10.1 and 8.9 back at CTIA, I did actually wonder whether they were too ambitious with designing the tablets. In the back of my mind was that Samsung created those designs without being 100% how they were going to fit all the components into it. The main motivation to show those were due to competition against iPad2. While both the 8.9 and the 10.1 look damn sexy compared to the competition, I really think they have been rushed as this news article implies.
News of glass coming away from the screen on the Google IO 10.1 devices is also another sign that the devices were rushed. I think I'll wait a month or two after release for things to settle down and for other early adopters to be Samsung's "mass user testing team"
I'm sure there'll be some indication on the box via barcodes, SKU etc to work out which 8.9 version people will be getting so it's not a big deal but I've got my eye on the 10.1 so hopefully not affected by this.
Sigh... 8.9" version is all I want... =(
I was also leaning towards the 8.9 but then I saw the 10.1 at the event in NY and the screen was just right.
Sure the 8.9 might be even more portable but the 10.1 is slim and light enough.
All we know about the 8.9 is that it passed the FCC so it can't be too far away.
However, being that the 10.1 is delayed, I am sure they want to make sure that every store + Verizon is selling the 10.1 before launching a new product into the market.
If they would launch together people would buy either one. If they wait a bit they create a buzz for both.
Very disappointing to read. However since I'm on my fifth (!!) Samsung Captivate, I know all-too-well the company's ongoing issues with rushed hardware and quality control. GPS-gate, anyone?
Granted, even the mighty iPad2 is plagued with backlight bleed issues (traced to panel provider, LG) but if this article is true, and Samsung is speeding through a panel manufacturer selection process, I will *not* buy something that was tossed together with questionable quality control. The Asus Transformer's dust under-the-screen issue is a perfect example of poor QC. Same for the Google I/O GTab 10.1 with its lifting screen. At these $500+ price points, I think it's laughable these make it out of the gate with so many problems. (If the Xoom didn't leave me unimpressed with its tepid screen, I'd have stuck with it, as its build quality was otherwise exceptional.)
The more I read about this Tab 8.9 the more I want it.
This thread is a bit of a bummer if it's true but in the mean while have a look at what GSM Arena have put up.
Definitely put a smile on my face, just got to play the waiting game now

The video looks pretty slick too and I think as of late Samsung have been pretty good with pushing out updates of it's newer models like the Galaxy S2 so I'm hoping any newer updates will come quickly to this lil guy....that being said, it will be another story when Ice Cream Sandwich rolls around.
Yes, I was really looking forward to the 8.9 myself. I had originally grabbed a 32gb Transformer, but was totally turned off by the build quality. I had pretty much every issue mentioned.. light bleed from all sides, screen not sealed all the way around, creaky, dead pixels... I sent that back and grabbed a Xoom from Costco hoping that the 8.9 would arrive before my 90 day return window closed.
The Xoom has 0 build issues and is actually one of the sturdiest electronic devices I've held in awhile... it's a bit big though for my liking. I think the screen is just a little too long in portrait and it's annoying to hold while reading in bed. The weight doesn't feel spread out either. Anyway, that's why I wanted to try the 8.9. The 7" tabs just feel like large phones to me and this seems like a great middle ground.
Hopefully, we hear something soon from Samsung.
do u think this would fit it: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/tablet-accessories/for-android/devices/keyboard-case-samsung-galaxy

I came from a Tab 7" to a Xoom, and had the same "reading in bed" issues as well. Bought a Tab 10.1, and all that went away...smoother corners, better weight distribution, much less weight overall, and a better display. I read for hours at a time on the couch, in bed, in the "reading room", etc.
Glad I didn't hold out for the 8.9 three months ago...three months is a long time, and I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the 10.1 since then. Doubt I'll ever switch to the 8.9 at this point.
I will be buying the Tab 7.7 just as soon as it's released though...SAMOLED and Exynos in a slim 7" package is too good to pass up.

Same here. Held out for 8.9 too long. Just sold 7 inch tab and purchased 10.1 for 350. Will switch to 7.7 when it gets to 350 price.
I want to add that build quality of 7 inch SGT was excellent. Used it with overcome ROM and loved it.
Edit: Said too early. Looks like SGT 8.9 is available for preorder

All it says is USB 2.0 High Speed. Which is still the same thing you find on the 10.1. There are no extra ports on the 8.9.

If the Tab 10.1 doesn't have USB connectivity, how come it came with a USB cable and I'm able to connect it to my PC?

For most people the cable that comes with it is enough as it does offer usb connectivity to a PC.
What people are talking about is the conntector on the tablet itself. You need an usb cable from samsung to be able to connect - it does not work with a standard usb cable (notice how broad the connector towards the tab is compared to a standard (micro) usb cable)...
Hype
Im just a bit puzzled about this tab, i'm really excited about this tab. But by googleing and searching forums I found that there's no hype? Why is there no hype about this tab?

Its because its still based on Tegra 2 which is basically very old news and soon to be obsolete. There are smartphones with more powerful chips than tegra 2.
Plus the fact that it's been delayed - it's not that different to the Tab 10.1, so most people will probably have gotten bored of waiting and just went for the larger model.

Ah, maybe so. I'm getting one. The resellers in Sweden is just starting to get them to their inventory.

Tired of Samsung's poor quality issues.

I really love the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but I had to return my third tab in a row and this time for a full refund. The first one came with scratches on the screen and the tab appeared to be used with finger tips and dust. The second came clean but with the newton's ring issue in the center of the screen. The third one came with dust under screen, right in the center, like a big dead pixel, a big scratch in the left arra and the package inside was really dirty. I'm tired, tired of the trips to BB and tired of 's quality control ineptitude. I will never consider Samsung again.
When I was returning the third one, there were two persons returning their galaxy tabs as well for similar issues. This is sad because it's a really good tab but the quality issues will kill this product of the market.

I have had the opposite experience. I went through 5 Asus Transformers over 2 months just trying to get one that didn't have light bleed before giving up and purchasing a Galaxy Tab 10.1. I read with white text on a black background so any light bleed tends to be distracting.
It was a night and day difference. My Galaxy Tab is flawless from a quality control standpoint.
This is just my experience...

I'd lean more towards this as well... Seems more like BB is selling returned units without being refurbished. Take your issues with them, not Samsung
I rolled the dice and purchased an "open item" 32gb tab from bestbuy. I couldnt pass up the deal at the price of $554 out the dour with taxes. Still comes with the 14 day return and samsung warranty. It had the newton ring when i unpacked it but i managed to get rid of it and has not came back since. Couldnt be happier with my purchase.
I would ignore ignorant post. I returned mine as well. I was playing flash video heavily then then color started to bleed/smear. Reboot didnt help. Very very sad with quality!

Dont blame samsung for buying open box items. If you didnt know they were open box then you got scammed. Sorry. Best Buy sells returns as new all the time I used to work there long ago.

Just wanted to point out that scratches and fingerprints are signs of it being previously used and does not constitute as poor built quality. More like poor store quality. Best Buy sucks btw. Never had any issues with Newegg and Amazon.

i don't think its Samsung it might be the store your getting them from I was in best buy and sat there and watched them sell a guy the same one I returned because of bad pixel
I went through 3 SG10.1 and looked at 3 different display models at 2 different bestbuys and frys...... they all had some quality issues.
THEY ALL HAD dust under the glass
SOME had dead pixels
ONE had oil mark under the glass
ONE had a weird surface lifting on the back cover
I believe the quality issues are based on the owners...some of us are really sensitive to flaws

Expecting four million Notes sold in the first quater 2012

Analysts are expecting four million Galaxy Note sold in the first quarter 2012.
http://www.etnews.com/news/home_mobile/information/2573897_1483.html (in Korean, sorry.)
Last quarter, one million Notes were sold. That makes total 5 million Notes.
What do you think is the best selling point?
For me, it is the 5.3 inch screen and S-Pen.
I tend to forget things, so I need a device that I can jot down quickly before I forget. Note is the perfect device for me for I can carry it anywhere always.
I'm all about the extra real estate. When I look at my old iPhone and think back on how I used to browse on that small screen, I cry a little.
I have at least 2 friends that are waiting for the GSIII launch, in anticipation that the note price might drop a bit. They both use iPhones right now, so maybe 2 more sales for Q2 or Q3.
One other friend is waiting for info on the Journal for Verizon, hopefully she won't be disappointed.

Just to be fair, that screen was big years ago. Haha.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note.
There is a huge galaxy Note billboard ad in bangkok as soon as you leave the airport
Back then (when I wasnt owning a Note), I would look amazed at how big the S2 was... So I bought myself an S2... when the Note was released, My jaws dropped on how big the Note is, side by side with my S2... My S2 look like an ordinary phone compared to the Note.
Now, having a Note already... I laugh at myself seeing others looking at my Note and commenting how big it is... Though now, I find my Note's screen not big anymore...
I guess my eyes have already used to seeing the size of it everyday, that's why I laughed at other people giving a remark on the size of it.
Just bought my Note today. Still have my S & S2, suppose I should sell them but I still love them both. Samsung really have me hooked.

Irritated

So I ordered my 16gb Note 10.1 last week and went and picked it up yesterday afternoon. I opened the box at the store to check the "body" of the device to make sure it wasn't split along the sides and no odd creaking or anything. Everything looked good.
I get it home and discover that there's no S-Pen. It's not in the box, not in the back of the device, nowhere to be found.
The unit shipped directly from Samsung. I called the store and they said I could return it, and they'd order another one if I wanted or I could have my money back. The other option was that I could call Samsung directly and give them the low down and have them send me another S-Pen.
I chose to call Samsung and they apologized and said they'd send out an S-Pen right away. Sounds good, except that it's going to take 7 - 14 working days to arrive! Really?!?!?!
I specifically bought the Note 10.1 FOR the S-Pen and note taking capabilities. I am involved with multiple activities (my job included) that require me to take notes. This is a significant problem for me.
Yes, I know I can just buy a stylus and wait it out but it irritates me that the unit got shipped without one of the "selling-points" of the product. I understand they can't QA every single unit but come on, a CORE part of the device not being included? Really?!
Okay, I'm done ranting now.
I really like the unit and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, ONCE I get the S-Pen!

So I'm curious. If your job and activities require all this what we're you doing before you got your note? Under performing?
Not saying it's not messed up you didn't get a pen, but if you've been doing your all your job functions and activities for X time before you had a note I'm sure you'll survive another 5-7 days.
I got a note that when I pulled the pen out the little plastic tension piece inside the slot came out and then the pen would fall out if it was in the holder. Shoulda made Samsung ship it overnight.
Well THAT would irritate me too, since it´s not a 299.- $ device.
Even if they sell 20 million devices no single one with faults should pass QC.
I bought 1 SII, two SIII, 1 Note, 2 Note 10.1´s and they came all PERFECT, no broken seals, no creaking, no scratches, mechanically and by the hardware in perfect function and no faults by the software (never ever had one single firmware related crash or update probs out of the box with no single Sammy device)
In mobile electronics a defect rate of 5% or below is considered outstanding performance. The missing S-Pen is bad QC as it obviously shouldn't have shipped without it. But to put it in perspective, Samsung's sold 30MM SGS3's so it would be excellent if no more than 1.5MM had a defect. Someone who got one of the 1.5MM probably would disagree.
Is it a HUGE deal? No. Is it going to prevent me from doing my job? No. I can use pen & paper like I've been doing or I can go buy a 3rd party stylus. It's more of a convenience thing AND the fact that it SHOULD have been packaged with it. By my counting on / planning on / looking forward to being able to use the device, it just made it more of an irritation.
I completely agree that 5% being "jacked up" (hardware, software, defects, missing parts, etc) is acceptable. It would have just been better if someone else experienced the 5%.
As for Samsung products in general, never had an issue with them before. Home theater equipment, cell phones, etc.
Sorry, you're within the 5%.
The opinion that Samsung is solid in all their mobile devices is not correct at all. I also have a Samsung 7 Series slate and this thing came with its screen lifted big time as soon as I took it from the box. Getting it fixed by them was a [email protected], and this was not an isolated case. If you go to TabletPCReview.com, you'll notice that around 35% of all these slates came with the screen defected. I was in that big margin.
Being inside an even smaller margin should feel really crappy...
Now, for a solution, these tablets work with any WACOM pen, so if you have one for any other tablet or convertible then that should work flawlessly. It will no feel as nice as the one that comes with the tablet (as this one has a rubber tip and all others I know come with a hard one) but it should work the same way.

There's another solution. Many Best Buy stores stock the replacment pen. You can buy one there and keep it as a spare or return it when your missing one arrives.

That is incorrect. There may be some Wacom pens which work with the GNote 10.1 but not all. I have an Intuos 3 and the pen for it will not work on my GNote 10.1 it has no effect what so ever. With that said you can use your finger. It is surprising how presice you can be on the GNote 10.1 with your finger.
Yeah, if there was a big hole on the bottom right of my tablet where the s-pen is stored, I'd be annoyed too.
sadly, it's all academic now... my kayscase flip case really doesn't allow me to get to it, muchless see it.

I've heard indeed of some intuos and bamboo series pens not working on WACOM enabled screens. But I was referring to those that come with other tablets or convertible PCs. I've heard around that the intuos 5 pens work. I have a lil babmoo touch tablet and it doesn't work at all too.
In my last two weeks of ownership I've probably only used the pen less than 10 minutes and still love the tablet!

well that would irritate me too, since it´s not a 299.- $ device.
Even if they sell 20 million devices no single one with faults should pass qc.

Get a grip. That doesn't exist for any product manufactured anywhere.

Missing Extra Pen Nibs, Anyone Else?

When I bought my last 2 GNote 10.1 Tablets I had extra Pen nips in the box. My GNote 8 did not have any spare nips. Just curious, did anyone else recieve them in the box?

No, none here either.
It's the same type of pen as the note 2. The nib is non removable so if it dies you'll have to replace the whole pen. It's a little bit of a money grab but this note 8.0 is a better product than the 10.1 so I can live with it.

Thanks for the info, I didn't think to compare that.
Regards,
Got mine and didn't have any extra nibs either. I also noticed that ny box did not contain any earpiece. Is that normal.

No extra nibs and no earpiece came with my N5110 too.
