Can I factory reset, even after deleting some preloaded apps? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember on my gs2, I would get a FC.. But I need to try a factory reset right now but I just don't have my laptop with me until Friday and that's where my backup is of the apps that were removed.. Can I still factory reset even with those apps gone? And root should stay in tacked right?

You mean the Factory reset in Setting? That is a Factory Data Reset. It's only the data, not your SD and root.

You can still perform a factory reset and root access will still be there.

[Q] Encrypting The A500

Has anyone done this yet? A message pops up saying it can not be reversed. I wonder if this would/will affect putting on a custom kernel or recovery. Also does the reset pin by the usb reset it to factory stock?
The reset button just reboots the tablet which worries me (WinMo users know my fears). As far as the enctyption... scary, who's gonna take the leap of faith?

I did it. No idea how long it took - I told it to start and left, when I came back it was done.
I figure everything is backed up for me online, so I could risk it, and I need the extra security for work.
No noticeable performance difference, but I didn't run benchmarks.
I also encyypted, no problems to report. The tab is really great!

I did it, and now when ever I boot I get an "ok" dialog that says:
Apkinstaller
All pre-installed processes complete!
[OK]
and the time it's lost my timezone
I just did a factory reset to see if that will wipe off the encryption. And it does.
EDIT: The strange thing is that it didn't wipe the root.
EDIT2: It didn't reset the games or any of the other bloatware.

Not strange, pre-installed software and root-eploit are on a lower level, it just deletes/resets all user made changes

[Q] trouble after deleting data/data/com.android.providers.settings

hi guys, would really appreciate your help..
i was trying to fix my nexus 4's problem of unable to sync with google servers so i deleted the data/data/com.android.providers.settings and it indeed fixed the issue.
unfortunatley, after rebooting, i'm now:
- unable to get a lockscreen
- unable to get home button to work
- swipe down settings are gone. and so are notifications
is there another way to restore this other than a factory reset?

Factory reset wil not help, reflash a factory image or custom rom if you are rooted.

He only deleted the data so of course a factory reset will fix it this.
You will probably take ages trying to fix and end up having to wipe anyway. I take it you haven't got a backup of any sort (nandroid/ti backup) etc?

Yup, my bad. So many users wiping the entire sdcard nowadays that i took it wrong and didn`t read correctly
I thought I did but I searched my PC and couldn't find any previously backed up data. So I guess I've no choice but to factory reset and reinstall my data

Hi there! I had had the same problem l33chpda had, but the factory reset fix worked just one time only, today i was about to resell my phone so i wanted to factory reset it, after that i've come across with the problem i had that time, again.
Don't know what to do, i have same issues mentioned by l33chpda, cant get into settings, swipe down settings neither, etc; when try to, phone just do nothing or stays one second and goes back home screen.
I have made nandroid (both clockworkmod and TWRP) of the phone when I bought it, but with online nandroid so i don't have any custom recovery installed.
While checking those nandroid backups, I've discovered the deleted folder backup in the clockworkmod nandroid folder.
Could it be possible to paste it back into "\data\data" folder? should that be the fix? Or I'll have to reflash all even though I dont wanna take that risk because is just that, the other things of the phone are intact and work great.
In case of reflashing, could you tell me about any easy tutorial on how to install clockworkmod recovery?
I own an LG G2 D800, KitKat d80020y rooted with stumproot.

[Q] Update 4.4.2 Kies issue

Hi guys,
I recently side loaded kit kat 4.4.2 and I have 100% completely stock no rooting or anything. Everything is NAE I have been noticing that my phone turns off spontaneously and the only way to turn it back on is to take out the battery. I also have noticed that my phone becomes very hot and loses its battery very quickly.
i was told from another user to do a factory reset which I plan to. I wanted to back up my files before i do that but after i install kies with this version"* Supported model : Feature phone, Smart Phone/Tablet before Galaxy Note III
(including Galaxy S4, Note II, etc)" from Samsung.
My Windows 7 64 bit cannot install the MTP driver and then Kies says to install Kies 3 because it is unsupported to the current version.
Does anyone know how to back up the whole phone like Apple's Itunes back up or know of any other solution to my problem?
This has really put me off of Android..
I've never used Kies for anything so I can't help you there, what are you trying to backup? If your going to backup the whole phone, factory reset, and then restore your phone then your problem will just return. How long have you had your phone? If you've never rooted then it may be a hardware problem. I have great battery life after updating to 4.4.2. You should be able to find an app in the play store that can back up your data without root. All of your apps and contacts are backed up by google. I believe there are apps that will backup your texts and call logs without root. You are better off letting the play store reinstall your apps after a factory reset so the problem doesn't return.

I don't think its a hardware problem since this problem began after I updated to kit kat. Also, what is the best way to do a factory reset? is there a difference between a soft and hard factory reset?
Thanks

Best way is through recovery, power off phone, then hold the volume up button and power at the same time until you see the blue text in the upper left corner. Select factory reset. You should pull your sdcard first because I can't remember if the stock recovery wipes the external sdcard.

Thanks! I will try to back up everything and then do a factory reset. Hopefully it will solve my problem
My brother just had the same problem, screen wouldn't come on, got very hot. Factory reset fixed it. Not sure about the backup as he didn't do one(all the apps he uses are cloud saved) but just confirming you doing the right thing doing a factory reset. Usually fixes everything lol

i dont backup my sms. but i know there are alot on the google play store. just search "SMS Backup" find one with nice reviews
you might need to copy it to your PC hard drive as i think a factory restore clears the internal storage and most apps dont have access anymore to the SD card as Google is trying to kill it

[Q] Nexus 4 shuts down at night for no apparent reason

OK, This is my problem. I own a nexus 4 which is rooted with the Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit. All the proper drivers are installed according to the toolkit. I updated the phone to 5.0.1 and re-rooted the phone successfully. Now with that said the phone works all day and when I go to sleep at night it shuts itself down and takes holding down the power button for a while before it will turn back on. 2 nights in a row now. I am not super tech savvy so if any one knows why this update has brought on this issue please clue me in. While searching for answers most people think factory data reset and that is no guarantee and seems to be a bit drastic. Google has to be aware of this issue because you can google the problem and it has a lot of entries about Nexus 4 shutting itself down after 5.0.1 update.

It's not a shutdown. It's a freeze. That's why you have to simulate a battery pull (hold power button longer) to restart it.
You could flash the factory images if you'd like. It's like a factory data reset, but it also re-installs the system itself. You are rooted, so you can backup your apps and data.

I have most everything backed up but what should I do? If Google isn't going to fix this should I factory reset or is there something else I should do.? My phone is rooted and there is a setting to "Factory Data Reset" on the Backup & Restore setting. Or should I do the reset through the WugFresh Nexus Toolkit? However I do it isn't the 5.0.1 update going to be installed if I do a Factory Data Reset? It won't go back to 4.4.4 will it?

Okay so
1. There's probably nothing to fix. Your system just developed a bug that can be fixed by reinstalling it. I don't have any problem. It's not universal.
2. By flashing the latest factory images, which are Android 5.0.1 ( https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/occam-lrx22c-factory-86c04af6.tgz ) , you will basically delete all you data on the phone, which is factory resetting, while reinstalling the system at the same time. And no, you won't go back to 4.4.4.
A factory reset by itself does not reinstall the system. It simply deletes your data.
Here is a guide on how to flash the factory images:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
And then you can use the toolkit again to root.
Same happens to my phones and flashing or restoring is not gonna help u in any way. Roll back to 4.4 and that solves the problem for me.
Download safe charge from the play store, mines stopped doing it ever since!
