[Q] trouble after deleting data/data/com.android.providers.settings - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, would really appreciate your help..
i was trying to fix my nexus 4's problem of unable to sync with google servers so i deleted the data/data/com.android.providers.settings and it indeed fixed the issue.
unfortunatley, after rebooting, i'm now:
- unable to get a lockscreen
- unable to get home button to work
- swipe down settings are gone. and so are notifications
is there another way to restore this other than a factory reset?

Factory reset wil not help, reflash a factory image or custom rom if you are rooted.

He only deleted the data so of course a factory reset will fix it this.
You will probably take ages trying to fix and end up having to wipe anyway. I take it you haven't got a backup of any sort (nandroid/ti backup) etc?

Yup, my bad. So many users wiping the entire sdcard nowadays that i took it wrong and didn`t read correctly

I thought I did but I searched my PC and couldn't find any previously backed up data. So I guess I've no choice but to factory reset and reinstall my data

Hi there! I had had the same problem l33chpda had, but the factory reset fix worked just one time only, today i was about to resell my phone so i wanted to factory reset it, after that i've come across with the problem i had that time, again.
Don't know what to do, i have same issues mentioned by l33chpda, cant get into settings, swipe down settings neither, etc; when try to, phone just do nothing or stays one second and goes back home screen.
I have made nandroid (both clockworkmod and TWRP) of the phone when I bought it, but with online nandroid so i don't have any custom recovery installed.
While checking those nandroid backups, I've discovered the deleted folder backup in the clockworkmod nandroid folder.
Could it be possible to paste it back into "\data\data" folder? should that be the fix? Or I'll have to reflash all even though I dont wanna take that risk because is just that, the other things of the phone are intact and work great.
In case of reflashing, could you tell me about any easy tutorial on how to install clockworkmod recovery?
I own an LG G2 D800, KitKat d80020y rooted with stumproot.

[Q] Verizon Tab won't perform factory reset

I have a Verizon Galaxy Tab SCH-I800 and I woke up today and it was missing some programs that I had installed the night before. Launcher pro keeps crashing so I had to put the Samsung Launcher back on. Now random programs all keep crashing and locking up the device. I performed a factory reset through settings -> privacy -> perform factory reset.
It restarts and goes to the samsung bootloader and I performed wipedata/factory reset.. It says it does it but when it restarts its in the same condition as before.
I've booted directly to the bootloader and tried it too (volume up and power key). I've also tried to wipe cache with no luck..
Any ideas? Can I root it and put a custom rom on it? I saw that there really aren't any roms for the Verizon tabs.. Any reason why?
Thanks for any help..
I just did a restore with all the stock verizon firmware using heimdall and it flashed and everything went through properly..
I booted into recovery and wiped data/cache and restarted...
SAME THING! It will NOT wipe out my existing data.. It restarts with all of my old programs installed and NOTHING will work.. The OS is hosed. How can I wipe this thing back to factory??

I'm in the same boat..half my apps crash when you try to open them. I've wiped the data partition 3 times, and the cache as well..not avail. Apps are still on the device after a master reset!

I had that problem, and I wound up sending it back to Samsung. It appeared to be a bad part on the board, so they replaced it and it's on its way back now. Not the answer you want, I'm sure, but call it in and get your RMA number.

HELP!!! I9000 dropped all my data oO

Hi,
I have an issue with my Galaxy S. While I played with the app "VPNC" suddenly my Phone freezes and the Screen is black. (Donßt think the app is responsible for that)
So I removed the battery and after a reboot the setup wizzard appeared and all my personal data disappeared. Some Contacts, call history, app data, shortcuts, everthing!
Apps are still installed but some crash when I start them. My wallpaper is still there but nothing else on the "desktop".
WTF happend to my phone?
Is there any way to get my data back?
Looks like you wiped the settings playing with app.
Data contacts should be where you backed them up to .
You could look at internal sd card via USB mass storage .
You need a factory reset .
As the dev of the app says .
Warning: You do this on your own risk: when hacking your phone you loose the phones guaranty! If you crash the bootloader by doing this, you are lost: the phone will definitely be broken!!
I warned you...
So first inform yourself carefully about what others did and their experiance by googling around...
jje
Actually I do not think that this app is so dangerous at all because it seemed to be the only Fritz!Box compatible VPN Client and is used by many users afaik.
Maybe I pressed some buttons while the screen was black and did something stupid without seeing what I did?! I don´t know...
However, the data seems to be gone and I have to deal with that.
The good thing is, that I created a titanium backup just a few days ago (Batch --> all apps and settings or so)
The bad thing is, I have never really used this app. Just installed it and made that backup. No restore so far and just the one backup for testing purpose.
Now I don´t want to do anything wrong, so what is the best way to proceed now?
Reset Phone to factory defaults, reinstall titanium and try to recover this ways?
Re-Flash the ROM, reinstall titanium and try to recover that way?
Is there any chance to make a "dump" of my current flash in case i am destroying more than is already destroyed, so that I could get back to the state the phone is in right now?
Is there anything that will not be recovered by titanium, so that I should try to save this before doing the reset?
//EDIT:
I am wondering, how is it possible to wipe all the personal data and configs with just one buggy app? what exactly happened there? Does this make any sense at all and is this behavior a known issue?
Factory reset and use Titanium to back up apps and data but not system settings .
jje
okay thanks, will try that.
Can anyone tell me if there is any chance to backup my phone (flash dump?) as it is right now before I do the reset? If my titanium backup does not work I ḿight have wiped more doing the reset than already is wiped and it would be a good thing if I could get back to state the phone is in right now.
Did the reset + recovery with titanium now. Everything is fine so far except my home screen layout. Is there a way to recover the home screen using titanium?
If not, how can I back up the home screen?
btw: titanium is a really great tool. Will definitly buy the pro version to support this project.

[Q] Weird, weird issue - Home button/notifications panel don't work

To preface,
I'm running an AT&T LG G2 rooted (with a couple of Xposed modules). I'm running 4.2.2
Today, I rebooted my phone after updating some apps from the play store, and then all hell broke loose. Here's a list of what went wrong
1) ALL of my settings were reset. Sound settings, call settings, screen on settings, etc. EVERYTHING.
2) My home button doesn't work. It lights up - it knows I pressed it, but it doesn't send me to the launcher. I have the home button programmed through Nova Launcher to open my voice search when I'm on the home screen - that doesn't work either.
3) My notifications panel stays empty - nothing shows up. On top of that, the little "gear" icon that should take me to settings doesn't work. There's a gear setting above that for sound that DOES work.
4) When I go to "About Phone", my phone name was reset to "G2".
4) Here's the kicker - When I go to "About Phone", the "Software Update" button has disappeared. What the hell happened?
If anybody can solve this issue, I have a small bitcoin prize for you...
Edit: Noticed something new. I went into Titanium Backup and it gave me a notification that my "Device ID" was changed. It states that this commonly occurs after a factory reset or ROM change? Here's the thing - I've never factory resetted my phone or even installed a recovery for that matter.
Notice #2: Volume keys don't respond. Although changing volume manually through the settings does work.
Quick note: I changed a value in settings.db using SQLite manager. I tried changing "tether_entitlement_check_state" to 0. And then I exported the DB and saved it. Would that have caused an issue?
well all hell really did break loose here, have you tried entering download mode and flash back to stock(I'm pretty sure this isn't you want to do) but it might be the only thing to do

Interesting. Thanks for the link. I wonder, other than hiding the "root" flags, how is this different from performing a factory reset? I would be opting to restore 4.2.2, not Kit Kat.

well tis is different to a factory reset as in it makes everything the way it used to be like if you were just powering on your phone for the first time while with a factory reset- if you have lets say deleted bloat and modified anything in the /system or other areas they are gone forever, the factory reset is more like a wipe your phone and start again(sometimes if you are rooted it remains rooted just without the su app)

Alright then...hmm. Wait I have another question. Does a factory reset delete my internal memory, the pseudo sd-card? Like my photos/TB backup/etc.?

I'm pretty sure it does but I have always had doubts about that(I usually always wipe with custom recovery so I don't remember when was the last time I used factory reset option, plus I upload a most of my backups into onedrive/goole drive/dropbox) also using the flash to stock method will wipe everything from the phone like I said its like powering it on for the first time just in case you were wondering

Okay, so here's my plan. I'm currently ADB pulling my entire SD card (with the titanium backup contents) onto my laptop. I plan to factory reset (the default android one that's in the settings). If that doesn't work, I will use the other flash-to-stock method.
Once I'm done, I plan to use Titanium backup to restore everything including settings. Here's my question:
When I'm restoring everything, will it be 1-click? In the past when I had other phones, the only time I restored TB was when I flashed different ROMs, so it caused havoc with my settings. Since I'm keeping the stock-ROM software, will I be able to 1-click "Restore" and have everything be how it used to be (Except for the Xposed Modules of course) ?
Also...I really don't like how MTP hides the Titanium Backup folder...

well I don't think you can one click restore with titanium backup(I don't see that as an option) you have to restore everything manually
as for mtp hiding the backups, I'm on the same boat as you

Referring to TB, you can set it to restore your backups with 1 click through "batch mode", but I believe you need to have the paid version.
Anyway, everything's fixed! I actually just put a recovery on it, and then deleted data and cache. That way my internal sd card didn't get wiped.
And I did a little more searching, it seems like modifying the sqlite database when you try to remove AT&T's tethering check causes the weird issue. I wonder if it's a secret backdoor program that makes your phone unusable...

Any other way to set up wireless tether? I've read that most wireless tether apps don't work. I haven't actually tried, but is that true?

Nandroid - apps crashing after restore

I I have a Galaxy S4 with KitKat 4.4.2 and TWRP installed. I have been using Nandroid for backups.
Today I (stupidly) deleted the CSC.apk file with Uninstall and the phone started acting really strangely. I tried restoring the CSC app but it wouldn't do it (I tried multiple times). So I booted into TWRP recovery mode and did a full restore which worked fine...until I rebooted the phone.
I have quite a few apps that continually crash with:
Unfortunately, (App Name) has stopped
and then all I can do is tap the OK button. After tapping OK the errors popup continuously.
Is this normal? How can I fix this without reflashing the phone? This is my first restore ever done with Nandroid Any ideas? Annoyingly I also lost the activation for my GPS app (CoPilot). I thought Nandroid was an exact clone/backup so when you screw the phone up you can restore back to EXACTLY how the phone was when the backup was done?
Anyway, appreciate any help or thoughts on how I can get my apps to work without the constant stopping popups!
Thank you!
Can anyone help please?
Go back into recovery and wipe both the regular cache and dalvik cache.
As to the lost CoPilot activation, you'll need to contact CoPilot, then explain the situation to them, and they should be able to help you.

Thanks! I tried that but after wiping both caches and rebooting the phone and entering my SIM PIN, I am still constantly getting the "Unfortunately, (App Name) has stopped".
Is there anything else I can try? I'm a but confused by this as I thought Nandroid was an exect image of the phone! I'm not worried about CoPilot at all but the rest is important
Do a factory reset from within TWRP, then restore from the nandroid backup. How old is this nandroid?

So I tried doing a factory reset from TWRP and then doing a Nandroid restrore but after rebooting the phone I was still getting LOTS of errors with applications not working. Even the firewall wouldn't work as it couldn't find the config file.
I don't get it, I thought Nandroid made an EXACT image of your phone so if something went wrong and you performed a restore, your phone would be back to a working state?

Stuck on 'Phone is starting' after updating to Android 12

Hello!
I tried to update my phone (SM-G975U) via Odin from Android 9 to Android 12, got the firmware from SamFw.com. Everything went fine until the phone rebooted, after unlocking the phone gets stuck on 'phone is starting'. I CAN access the Set Up Menu, Uninstall apps, move some settings here and there, connect to Wifi/Bluetooth, receive calls, install apps using ADB. Also, theres a notification all the time that reads 'Phone restarted Unlock your phone to get app notifications', I'm assuming that the phone thinks it is not unlocked and that's why it doesn't fully boot up.
Some things that I've already tried:
Intalling another Launcher (Pixel Launcher)
Reinstalling the firmware (ver G975USQU6IVC7) / Trying with different CSC with no results
Wiping Cache in Recovery Mode
Deleting/Adding Fingerprints
Changing from Lock Pattern to NIP to Password
I don't really want to do the full wipe, I would like to keep my data or be able to export the photos (Device not Recognized by Smart Switch also)
Is there anything else I can do?, has anyone been through the same issue?

Nothing works. Now decided to show it to anyone. I guess the mobile shops have an option to erase everything. I don't understand how did it happen because it's usually with my toddler, he might have done something.

I followed a video and wiped out. Finally successful. I wasn't worried about data as Google has a backup.
I followed this method and finally it's factory reset.
