[Q] Encrypting The A500 - Acer Iconia A500

Has anyone done this yet? A message pops up saying it can not be reversed. I wonder if this would/will affect putting on a custom kernel or recovery. Also does the reset pin by the usb reset it to factory stock?

The reset button just reboots the tablet which worries me (WinMo users know my fears). As far as the enctyption... scary, who's gonna take the leap of faith?
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk

I did it. No idea how long it took - I told it to start and left, when I came back it was done.
I figure everything is backed up for me online, so I could risk it, and I need the extra security for work.
No noticeable performance difference, but I didn't run benchmarks.

I also encyypted, no problems to report. The tab is really great!
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk

I did it, and now when ever I boot I get an "ok" dialog that says:
Apkinstaller
All pre-installed processes complete!
[OK]
and the time it's lost my timezone

I just did a factory reset to see if that will wipe off the encryption. And it does.
EDIT: The strange thing is that it didn't wipe the root.
EDIT2: It didn't reset the games or any of the other bloatware.

Not strange, pre-installed software and root-eploit are on a lower level, it just deletes/resets all user made changes

Wierd Behavior After Flashing...

I have 2 Incredibles, mine, and my daughter's. I had hers initially, then gave her that one when mine showed up. On mine, I immediately flashed it to the first leak and 2.05 Radio OTA per instructions here, and it worked great.
On hers, I forgot to do a erase all before flashing it, so it still had all of my old data and apps on it. After flashing, I expected to see the screens revert back to their default state, but they didn't. My custom icon placements were still in place on the home screens. The icons for 3rd party downloaded apps were generic android icons. Opening any 3rd party app would cause a force quit. I did an erase everything, didn't fix it. If I went to the market, apps would show as not being loaded, so I loaded them, same results. I then uninstalled and reinstalled, and the apps all worked again.
So, last night, I reverted both phones. Mine went smooth as butter. Hers did the exact same thing as before. So, I went through all the actions, and got it all working again, no problem. Lastly, she went to change the desktop pattern to a picture, and rebooted the phone (not sure why), but it hung on the first "HTC Incredible" boot screen. Pulled the battery and put it back in, no change. Pulled it, let it sit for about a minute, put it on A/C and put the battery back in, and it came back up as expected. When it booted though, it has gone nuts again. All changes since the flashback were lost, icons were generic, I had to uninstall and reinstall everything.
The thing to note here is that once I get it all set up, it works fine, no problems. All I can figure is the fact that I didn't clear everything before the first flash has caused something in memory to become corrupt, and and isn't getting purged when I do an erase all.
So, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Doc
did you do a hard reset?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
sounds like you need to clear the davlick cache too. just selecting full wipe isn't always enough.

Ok, what's a "hard reset" as opposed to clearing everything via the Settings -> Privacy -> factory data reset?

And how does one go about clearing the davlick cache?
Thanks!
Doc
I did the same thing when I flashed mine. I just went back into clockwork and did a format on every choice including the cache and did a reinstall and everything was stock.
Thanks, I'll give it a try!
I'd still like to hear from seanhassars and jdkoreclipse on how to perform the options they suggested.
Thanks,
Doc
Hard reset is the clear storage option in the bootloader.
And you clear dalvik cache in the advanced menu in recovery.

I'll be redoing the phone tonight so will take all of this into account.
Thanks a lot to all!

[Q] Update 4.4.2 Kies issue

Hi guys,
I recently side loaded kit kat 4.4.2 and I have 100% completely stock no rooting or anything. Everything is NAE I have been noticing that my phone turns off spontaneously and the only way to turn it back on is to take out the battery. I also have noticed that my phone becomes very hot and loses its battery very quickly.
i was told from another user to do a factory reset which I plan to. I wanted to back up my files before i do that but after i install kies with this version"* Supported model : Feature phone, Smart Phone/Tablet before Galaxy Note III
(including Galaxy S4, Note II, etc)" from Samsung.
My Windows 7 64 bit cannot install the MTP driver and then Kies says to install Kies 3 because it is unsupported to the current version.
Does anyone know how to back up the whole phone like Apple's Itunes back up or know of any other solution to my problem?
This has really put me off of Android..
I've never used Kies for anything so I can't help you there, what are you trying to backup? If your going to backup the whole phone, factory reset, and then restore your phone then your problem will just return. How long have you had your phone? If you've never rooted then it may be a hardware problem. I have great battery life after updating to 4.4.2. You should be able to find an app in the play store that can back up your data without root. All of your apps and contacts are backed up by google. I believe there are apps that will backup your texts and call logs without root. You are better off letting the play store reinstall your apps after a factory reset so the problem doesn't return.

I don't think its a hardware problem since this problem began after I updated to kit kat. Also, what is the best way to do a factory reset? is there a difference between a soft and hard factory reset?
Thanks

Best way is through recovery, power off phone, then hold the volume up button and power at the same time until you see the blue text in the upper left corner. Select factory reset. You should pull your sdcard first because I can't remember if the stock recovery wipes the external sdcard.

Thanks! I will try to back up everything and then do a factory reset. Hopefully it will solve my problem
My brother just had the same problem, screen wouldn't come on, got very hot. Factory reset fixed it. Not sure about the backup as he didn't do one(all the apps he uses are cloud saved) but just confirming you doing the right thing doing a factory reset. Usually fixes everything lol

i dont backup my sms. but i know there are alot on the google play store. just search "SMS Backup" find one with nice reviews
you might need to copy it to your PC hard drive as i think a factory restore clears the internal storage and most apps dont have access anymore to the SD card as Google is trying to kill it

[Q] Weird, weird issue - Home button/notifications panel don't work

To preface,
I'm running an AT&T LG G2 rooted (with a couple of Xposed modules). I'm running 4.2.2
Today, I rebooted my phone after updating some apps from the play store, and then all hell broke loose. Here's a list of what went wrong
1) ALL of my settings were reset. Sound settings, call settings, screen on settings, etc. EVERYTHING.
2) My home button doesn't work. It lights up - it knows I pressed it, but it doesn't send me to the launcher. I have the home button programmed through Nova Launcher to open my voice search when I'm on the home screen - that doesn't work either.
3) My notifications panel stays empty - nothing shows up. On top of that, the little "gear" icon that should take me to settings doesn't work. There's a gear setting above that for sound that DOES work.
4) When I go to "About Phone", my phone name was reset to "G2".
4) Here's the kicker - When I go to "About Phone", the "Software Update" button has disappeared. What the hell happened?
If anybody can solve this issue, I have a small bitcoin prize for you...
Edit: Noticed something new. I went into Titanium Backup and it gave me a notification that my "Device ID" was changed. It states that this commonly occurs after a factory reset or ROM change? Here's the thing - I've never factory resetted my phone or even installed a recovery for that matter.
Notice #2: Volume keys don't respond. Although changing volume manually through the settings does work.
Quick note: I changed a value in settings.db using SQLite manager. I tried changing "tether_entitlement_check_state" to 0. And then I exported the DB and saved it. Would that have caused an issue?
well all hell really did break loose here, have you tried entering download mode and flash back to stock(I'm pretty sure this isn't you want to do) but it might be the only thing to do

Interesting. Thanks for the link. I wonder, other than hiding the "root" flags, how is this different from performing a factory reset? I would be opting to restore 4.2.2, not Kit Kat.

well tis is different to a factory reset as in it makes everything the way it used to be like if you were just powering on your phone for the first time while with a factory reset- if you have lets say deleted bloat and modified anything in the /system or other areas they are gone forever, the factory reset is more like a wipe your phone and start again(sometimes if you are rooted it remains rooted just without the su app)

I'm pretty sure it does but I have always had doubts about that(I usually always wipe with custom recovery so I don't remember when was the last time I used factory reset option, plus I upload a most of my backups into onedrive/goole drive/dropbox) also using the flash to stock method will wipe everything from the phone like I said its like powering it on for the first time just in case you were wondering

Okay, so here's my plan. I'm currently ADB pulling my entire SD card (with the titanium backup contents) onto my laptop. I plan to factory reset (the default android one that's in the settings). If that doesn't work, I will use the other flash-to-stock method.
Once I'm done, I plan to use Titanium backup to restore everything including settings. Here's my question:
When I'm restoring everything, will it be 1-click? In the past when I had other phones, the only time I restored TB was when I flashed different ROMs, so it caused havoc with my settings. Since I'm keeping the stock-ROM software, will I be able to 1-click "Restore" and have everything be how it used to be (Except for the Xposed Modules of course) ?
Also...I really don't like how MTP hides the Titanium Backup folder...

well I don't think you can one click restore with titanium backup(I don't see that as an option) you have to restore everything manually
as for mtp hiding the backups, I'm on the same boat as you

Referring to TB, you can set it to restore your backups with 1 click through "batch mode", but I believe you need to have the paid version.
Anyway, everything's fixed! I actually just put a recovery on it, and then deleted data and cache. That way my internal sd card didn't get wiped.
And I did a little more searching, it seems like modifying the sqlite database when you try to remove AT&T's tethering check causes the weird issue. I wonder if it's a secret backdoor program that makes your phone unusable...

[Q] i need help, bricked my SM-g870a

Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with the quality of the program i was working with and everything to do with MY lack of knowledge of android systems and what I am doing.
purchesed: 8/23.2014
my att gs870a
rooted: towelroot
xposed module: donkeyguard
the last few things that i had done was to install ABP for android and then downloaded donkeyguard. i checked the box in modules for Xposed installer and it required a reboot. i rebooted device and it starts booting up and gets to att screen and stops.
boot loader is set to freeze most of the automatic updates including KNOX
i have root cloaker in place
Xposed privacy guard in place
i can reboot into manual holding up arrow, home and power keys
from there i dont know what to select: restore factory defaults?
please help
i can try to provide any extra information that you may require and i have more rooted updates on device. please take pity on a NOOB. i dont claim anything other than sometimes a little knowledge is dangerous.
thanks

sorry that this is my first post. i have learned alot form this forum. this is my first android device. i had been on using BB 9930 up to now.
hi again
here is what i was able to work thru. hard boot holding vol/home/power into manual. at this point i was able to get kies3 to read device. reset to factory options and reinstalled last backup. phone is back up and running/rooted and reloaded with the exception of a couple of the last programs i had installed. now for the question:
it seems to be running slower than it was before. used TB to refreeze a number of apps and i was hoping it would show me if there were dup's. i am thinking this could be causing the slower operation. have used Antutu to check it against prior to brick. any thoughts on what might be causing it?
thanks in advance

I think I have maleware and a factory reset did nothing

So I think I may have gotten maleware from trying to update my pornhub app. Yea yea I know I know but its that time of the month for my wife and well the rest isnt needed lol. Honestly im not even sure if thats what caused it as ive had the app for about a year now and never had a problem. I did download some new keyboard & themes before all this started so those might be the culprit though I doubt it. Now all of a sudden the phone is installing so many random apps, multiple lock screens, is resetting itself, freezing, and acting all types of weird. Its not just porn related stuff its installing either im getting stuff for clash of clans, travelocity, money something, solitaire, etc. I was able to get it hooked up to my computer to try and manually remove stuff but im not finding certain apps like the travelocity & solitaire and going through phones app manager doesnt allow me to uninstall them even though they are present. I am also seeing little android icons next to some things which are named pornclub which is what makes me think it was the pornhub app.
Please for the love of everything help me get my phone back to working normally. Would flashing the phone work since a factory reset did nothing? I did put the phone in safe mode and was able to clear the cache of some of the apps which seemed to have taken them out but it did nothing for others even though there were no uninstall options.
Did you reset using stock recovery? Sometimes, stock recovery is needed to wipe data, cache.

Use the odin tool to reflash every thing. If it is a virus I'm 99% sure that'll get it.
Flashing with Odin will not always wipe the data partition; therefore, it is a good idea to perform a factory reset before booting the newly-installed rom for the first time.

Usually, partitioning is required if Odin can't pull the partition table from the phone.
Which bootloader is on the i337? Is the phone the att version of the s4?
Did you delete the folders on your phone's internal storage before you did a factory reset? Sometimes it doesn't delete everything.
I'd start by plugging the phone back into the computer, delete all the folders and files on the internal storage and do the factory reset again. See if that helps. I'd also make sure to not have the phone restore apps when you do the initial startup.
