Dust under screen, do I RMA? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Ive had my Nexus 4, and am extremely pleased with it. However, Ive noticed there is a spec of white dust under the screen, visible whether the screen is on or off, barely larger than a pixel.
Now ive noticed it, I cant stop looking at it.
Would you guys recommend RMA / returning it, or should I just live with it?

This is your decision. But it is clearly a manufacturing defect as N4 has a bonded LCD. So there is no way the dust can get under the screen after it was manufactured.

It really comes down to how bad it bothers you. If it's going to bother you moving forward, I'd suggest RMA'ing it, especially since Google will send you a new device before you have to send yours back.

I've had this issue with my LG Optimus T, it also has dust under the screen.
I guess it's just the way LG manufacturers them.

I would RMA it... Dust and/or dead pixels drive me INSANE!

RMA, it's not just how bad it bothers you it's the resale value.
In a year or so when the new Nexus comes out you will probably want to sell your N4 and as such, you will have to say that it has a spec of dust under the screen. Consider the resale value after you've said basically that the screen isn't perfect.

Yeah you should RMA, it's resale value goes down, and for me if I see something like dust or scratch on my screen it makes me want to commit suicide

I can't stand dust under the screen. If I were you, I'd RMA.
This is something you don't ever have to worry about with AMOLED...

If dust got under there it has a defect. Besides did you intend to pay for a device with dust under your screen? If you did not then don't accept it.

Who isn't going to RMA due to screen raise?

Who isn't going to send their nexus 7 in for exchange / repair ? I would probably have never noticed the screen issue if I wasnt reading the defect threads. I bet if you look hard enough you can find something wrong with anything. Right now the only issue is a slight raise on the left side on mine. There is no light bleed and no dead pixels or ghosting. I feel if I sent mine in and waited for however long it takes I'll get one back where the screen raise is fine and have a new issue like light bleed and dead pixels...

Lol how do people find this stuff mines is barely raised on the left side not bad enough for me to take apart and tighten the screws.
I'm not doing an exchange I love this thing and not ready to part.

I checked my screws and found that they were loose and tightened them up, screen still barely sits above but solved the creak. I have 3 more weeks to tinker with it, my Gamestop said i can return it once the next batch comes in but if this fixed it i won't exchange it.
Yeah I'm not planning on returning it either. I have seen some videos that have a MAJOR raise on the screen. Mine is just a little bit and can easily be pushed back down if I want to. Other than that the tablet is perfect and I don't want to send it back and maybe get one with more dead pixels (only noticed one but et normal viewing distance I can't see its there) or ghosting or something else.
I do recommend you keep an eye on it and make sure not doesn't get any worse. I doubt it will, however I will be exchanging it if it does.

I think everyone's expectations for a $200 dollar tablet are too high.
I am perfectly happy with mine. I have a little screen raise, but haven't noticed any creaks. I will use it until something significantly better comes out, then i'll spend another 200 to upgrade it.
Phones with comparable specs (albeit a smaller screen) are in the ~$400 range (gnex).
Mine was fine for the first 5 days, but has now started to lift. It sounds like double-sided tape coming unstuck. It's only raised about 0.5mm above the frame on the left hand side though, so I don't intend to return it unless it gets a lot worse, or it begins to affect other things (e.g. dust getting in, or digitiser playing up).
May yet return mine for ghosting, though doing a full discharge of the battery MAY have cured that issue (fingers crossed).
Why can't I get through Googles own support site to do a rma on my Google device? Wtf

Im thinking about sending my nexus 7 because of a yellowish tint on one of the corners when viewing pure black. But I am afraid of getting one with worse issues like the raised bezel or dead pixels.

If I only had the slight screen rise I would probably keep it, but I have a creak on the right that is loud and driving me nuts. Sadly, everything else seems perfect - hopefully my next one will be truly flawless...
I'm not. My Nexus 7 looks very well made, and in perfect shape. I've had it for 24 hours.

Yea I wasn't going to originally but after the screwdriver fix did nothing, and its basically like a creaky teeter totter on the left and right sides, I decided I should probably RMA. I love the tablet tho. I've used it A LOT since it arrived. It's amazing.
I have a very slight screen raise issue and I have requested to get a replacement, and depending on the condition of the replacement I'll either keep the new 1 or keep the old 1.

You can do that? I just figured Google would force you to ship the first one back, even if the second one was worse...
Keeping mine, no reason to return for such a silly non issue. Doesn't effect the use of the tablet at all.

Me, because both of my Nexus 7s are free of this, or any defects.
Same here. My left side of the screen sticks up a tiny bit, I'm waiting for a replacement but if the next one is worse ill just keep this one and try the washer fix or live with it. I still think it's a great tablet, especially for the price. I'll take this over an ipad costing hundreds more any day.

Is it safe to buy a nexus 7 yet ?

I had one with screen raise ... otherwise great. I don't want the hassle of endless refund cycles.
So, for new (or recent) orders from the Play store which I am assuming is the fastest clearing channel... do they still have the screen lift problem.
i.e. has the hardware been rev'd yet ? Anyone with a recent delivery know....
I just got my replacement today. I don't want to speak too soon but it's been out of the box for about 2 hrs and hey it looks fine right now. I'm gonna charge it and use it a little and see if anything pops up so to say and I'll update later tonight.
Edit: I wish there was a way to tell the hardware revision if there is one at all. I might crack these both open before I send my other one back and see if I can spot any differences.
I don't consider the screen lift an issue so I would have to say you have been good since day one. Other than that I haven't heard anything on "New batches" being released.

Not sure how its NOT and issue. Considering if the screen lifts to much the tablet wont work correctly. That being said I have got my replacement and I have a feeling its going to do the same thing. If you look down the sides of the tablet you will notice where the glass doesnt connect to the case. Thats where the screen is going to lift and the way this one looks its going to be just a matter of time before the screen lifts.

I have had the screen lift since day one and have no issues since. Don't understand how a slim screen lift is going to bork the device.
Got my second unit Wednesday. It has screen lift as well.
I would definitely advise against buying retail, but I think Google can be trusted. I'm just going to hold onto this defective one for a month or two. Then I'll ask for a replacement.
No regrets, although I was pretty miffed about opening a new one with the same flaw when it happened.

Guys... we are getting off topic. The question is not whether the screen lift is an issue to some (and not others).. but when will the hardware be rev'd so that the screen is flat.
a) Never (not considered an issue).
b) Soon - but still not yet shipping.
c) New ones are now coming in with flush screens.
Not gonna make this a poll.
Just want to know if those who have taken recent delivery have got flush screens....

I bought mine retail from Office Depot on 7/17 and haven't had a single problem with it.
In the UK I'm waiting until they physically have them in the stores. Right now it tends to be buy online and pick up in store a couple of days later. I got one last Friday from Tesco Direct and it had the screen-lift (this IS a fault) so took it straight back. I'd rather be taking back and getting a replacement straight away rather than waiting 2-3 days...or 10 days and counting with the crappy service offered by Google

Careful with buying in store. It may not be considered a fault (for the reasons expressed elsewhere in this thread) and if you do not have UK DSR law then you may not be able (allowed) to make a return. I wouldn't fancy my chances in CPW or Currys of doing a return if the device is functioning (but just not quite flush).
Most UK retailers allow you to return for simply not liking the product. In Tesco the guy told me it didn't matter if it was faulty as it was within their X days return. They'll be selling them in store in a couple of weeks apparently.
tribestos, fail to see how OCD relates to finding a fault on a piece of hardware. It's not like people are obsessively looking for faults. The screen isn't supposed to lift but it does. That's a design flaw.
So somebody must be taking the hit for all the returns... is it the retailer or do they just return the units back to the manufacturer and not pay for the duff ones ?

The replacement 7s poll has gotten sunnier, although people are voting prematurely. Also, it's not public, but I don't think many would tamper with it.
Although I have not seen a unit without this defect, there are at least a few posters there who should know exactly what to look for and haven't found any separation in their replacement whatsoever. That's a good sign, and that poll was pretty ugly last Wednesday, so the vast majority of respondents since then have been ticking perfect.
As for when this flaw will be officially dealt with, probably never. But don't hold that against Google. They can make right by rooting out the manufacturing flaw and dealing with unsatisfied customers on an individual basis. No need for any headlines.
Got my first Nexus 7 on the 17th. I was somewhat unhappy with how washed out the colors were. Also when I play a video the screen gets even more washed out for a short period of time. Generally just looks unsatisfactory. Also I have a row of pixels that sometimes flickers.
On the 24th I got my replacement Nexus 7. It was also washed out looking, had the same video playback issue. And the glass was raise on the left side if I held it there the screen would distort slightly.
I called Google today to get a feel on if I should try a second replacement or get a refund. The lady at Google said that Google has the new batch in now and says it has fixed the issues the first batch had with raised glass, pixel issues, and color quality.
So I'm doing a second RMA now. She's even letting me RMA the second device while I still have my first device (was worried I'd need to send that back before starting the second RMA).

You have that choice. But when I spend my money on something I expect it to be built w/o flaws. Hope the glass dont fall out on you when the screws get to lose! Oh you wont care tho it will still be irrelevant right?

Yeah, I hope she wasn't blowing smoke up my butt. That happens too. But I figure with the 16GB Nexus 7 suddenly returning to the Play store and the CS telling me this, it's hopefully correct.

Is screen lift enough of an issue to RMA?

Will Asus/Google replace my device for having the screen-lift problem? I don't want to go through too much of a hassle, but I do feel a little annoyed. I know, I know, join the club... I could happily live with my screen-lifted Nexus 7. Ok, scratch that: I can LIVE with a screen-lifted N7, just not happily.
I just filled out a request form on the Google page. Will they just laugh it off and tell me to deal with it? Or worse: will they tell me to send it in, and then inspect it and decide it's not a problem, and send it right back, wasting my time? Or even WORSE: could they go though with the replacement, and send me a device that has even MORE problems? Because other than the screen lift, my N7 is great.

EDIT: I should point out that I'm being a little picky about the screen lift. It's lifted enough that it's obviously visible, and it clicks in with a loud sound when I push that side of the screen... but other than that, it's not AWFUL. I don't have the impression that the screen is actually falling of the device. I don't think it's going to get any worse.
I've gone threw 3 they've all had a little screen lift, if it's very bad then it's worth exchanging, but if it's minor I wouldn't bother. My third exchange had no dead pixels and us very responsive with no lag so I'm going to look passed the screen lift. Besides, you can always get s case

[Q] little screen issues

my problem is that when i received my device i found a small bend (like if a small ball hit the screen )on the down button of the screen , it wasn't noticeable even if you move you`re finger across it , then several days a go I was working hard on the device and it got really hot and suddenly i noticed a yellow thing on the screen same place as the bends locate ,
the yellow thing will go after the screen cools down
any idea what is that yellow thing
if any one have any idea how to fix it I would appreciate that

Looks like the glue that sometimes shows up on the N4/iPhone when they overheat. If it is, it isn't a huge deal

Dude I have the exact thing wrong with mine. When its hot I get a really ugly yellow ring there too. Rest of the screen is fine but hasn't dissipated in two weeks.
The bad news is that either you play the play store lottery and end up with a worse device or you do the same with lg. I was going to get mine repaired, or rather have the screen replaced by lg rather than get yet another exchange but another person said that lg charged the repair cost and shipped a new phone. I don't know if the replacement is a refurb but it would make sense. The whole point for me with lg doing the warranty repair is to not get a different phone. Everything about my phone is awesome. I think we might have no choice unless you just want to keep it. I was going to but the ring drives me nuts. It is very visible in a sea of white.

Well the whole screen is glued to the touchscreen. The glue is thicker in that area because of the deformation in the glass. The person or robot pushed too hard when the panel was installed or glued and thus it dried unevenly. I got an order in for yet another RMA but the situation really pisses me off. My last is faster binned, perfect speaker and battery and everything else. Hardly any rattle, etc. When the RMA replacement ships I'm still going to call the lg warranty number and see if there's an option to replace my actual screen rather than getting a replacement. I seriously doubt they will scrutinize a device, even one they have repaired through refurbishment, as much as an anal retentive owner like myself will. I'll let you know if I find anything out. Knowing my abysmal record with the play store, my next will be worse than this one.

RMA Due To Tint/Hue Shifting Display

According to what I have read online, this seems to be a normal behavior for AMOLED screens. But coming from a NEXUS 5 with LCD screen, the tint shifting with changing angles is really jarring at times. I've asked for a replacement and it is coming next week. Has anyone gotten a replacement recently and still seeing this issue with their screen? Perhaps the latest batch has solved this issue or at least made it better? My current 6p has a manufacturing date of 10/29. If the replacement refurbished phone is even worse, can I tell Google to take it back instead of sending the phone I have now and start another RMA? Thanks in advance for your input.
Do you have a screen protector installed? It would cause this issue also in Android N you can adjust the screen RGB to satisfy to your likings. I bet the phone you get will be the same you just are not used to amoled and need to adjust it to resemble LCD.

I do have a plastic screen protector on the screen. I dont know how Android N will solve the tint shifting from blueish to pinkish when moving the phone slightly in any direction. I'm hoping the replacement phone will solve this issue or at least make it less noticeable. My brother's Note 4 isn't as extreme as my 6p when it comes to the tint shifting issue.

I'm willing to bet it's the screen protector causing that issue that's what they do. Try pulling it off and check then. I use a glass screen protector it does this slightly I guess but it's because I put a piece of glass over my screen. It's an amazing phone once you adjust RGB to your liking I'm sure you'll be happy and higher end screen protector's may limit this issue almost obsolete but you'll always get slight reflection issues.
I've raised an RMA request today as the top two thirds of my screen have a pink hue and the bottom third doesn't, and also seems noticeably brighter.
I noticed this issue straight away before I was aware of the numerous threads on the internet discussing it.
I have had many phones with amoled screens before and have never experienced this.
I love the phone though and if my RMA phone is worse, I'll send it back and keep this one. When I asked the Google guy about this, he just said to email him and let him know I was doing it and he would instruct what to do so they knew which phone to expect back.
My current phone is also an October 2015 handset.

Are you sure because there are numerous threads online regarding this issue with or without any sort of screen protector. But I will peel off the plastic screen protector and compare it side by side with the replacement once it's arrived.

Thanks for the info. Are you getting a brand new replacement phone or a refurbished one? Funny, how the rep told me that I must send back my current phone once I'd received the replacement because that is how the return/refund system is set up which doesn't make sense. I mean why would I want to return a phone that is better than a replacement phone? I wonder if anyone here has gotten a latest batch with a recent built date and still have this issue with his screen?

The guy I spoke to was brilliant. I explained the issue and I could tell it wasn't the first time he'd heard it.
He offered a possible explanation that there could be glue which hadn't cured fully due to it being a new device. I then said I would hope there want still wet glue on a phone that was build in October 2015! Lol
I asked what would happen if I should get a replacement and God forbid it is worse and he said to just drop him an email and he would arrange for me to send the newer device back. Anything seemed possible and nothing was an issue.
Slightly off topic but I'm a firm believer that 100% perfection doesn't exist and to be honest this slight screen issue isn't a deal breaker for me as I do really like the phone. I've had a OnePlus 2 and a Nexus 5x in the last two months and both were nowhere near on par with the 6P.

I agree with you on the 6p. I really like it as well. Let's hope we both will get a replacement that is even better than the one we have right now! I'll keep you updated once I received the replacement. BTW, are they sending you a brand new one or a refurbished? I've read that refurbished are often better than new ones because they have been tested even more and often look like a new phone.
I've no idea mate to be honest? I may even cancel the RMA or just refuse the new one. I'm either getting used to the hue or it is sorting itself out the more I use the phone (if that is even possible?!)
My speakers on the phone are great and I have no other issues. I'd hate to get another phone that wasn't as good as the one I have!

The refurbished units come in plain carbon boxes while the new ones come in retailed packaging. Also, on your RMA order confirmation, it would say if the unit is refurbished or not. I'm curious and hopeful that my replacement will be an even better unit so for that reason I will accept the delivery. You can always send it back if you dont like it at no cost to you.

Hi mate...did you get your replacement phone yet? I got mine today. It has a manufacturing date of 10/25 which is a few days before my current phone. The screen is brighter and the hue is more of a blueish white. It is definitely "cooler" than my current device which has a yellowish tint to it. The replacement phone shows white background better and more realistic. Most importantly, the shifting tint is less noticeable when I move the phone. Unfortunately, the speakers seem not as loud as my current phone. But I will keep the replacement and will be sending the current phone back to Google. I hope you got a good replacement device as I did!
I cancelled my RMA in the end and stuck with the original device. The pink hue has seemingly rapidly dissipated the more I've used the phone and had the screen on. I'm not sure if this is possible but I have read about people advising to give the screen a week or two of use to "settle"?
I can't really see what I was originally seeing, and that is when deliberately trying to reproduce the effect using a screen testing app, as opposed to me getting used to the effect in general use and not noticing it.
