Is it safe to buy a nexus 7 yet ? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had one with screen raise ... otherwise great. I don't want the hassle of endless refund cycles.
So, for new (or recent) orders from the Play store which I am assuming is the fastest clearing channel... do they still have the screen lift problem.
i.e. has the hardware been rev'd yet ? Anyone with a recent delivery know....

I just got my replacement today. I don't want to speak too soon but it's been out of the box for about 2 hrs and hey it looks fine right now. I'm gonna charge it and use it a little and see if anything pops up so to say and I'll update later tonight.
Edit: I wish there was a way to tell the hardware revision if there is one at all. I might crack these both open before I send my other one back and see if I can spot any differences.

I don't consider the screen lift an issue so I would have to say you have been good since day one. Other than that I haven't heard anything on "New batches" being released.

Not sure how its NOT and issue. Considering if the screen lifts to much the tablet wont work correctly. That being said I have got my replacement and I have a feeling its going to do the same thing. If you look down the sides of the tablet you will notice where the glass doesnt connect to the case. Thats where the screen is going to lift and the way this one looks its going to be just a matter of time before the screen lifts.

I have had the screen lift since day one and have no issues since. Don't understand how a slim screen lift is going to bork the device.

Got my second unit Wednesday. It has screen lift as well.
I would definitely advise against buying retail, but I think Google can be trusted. I'm just going to hold onto this defective one for a month or two. Then I'll ask for a replacement.
No regrets, although I was pretty miffed about opening a new one with the same flaw when it happened.

Guys... we are getting off topic. The question is not whether the screen lift is an issue to some (and not others).. but when will the hardware be rev'd so that the screen is flat.
a) Never (not considered an issue).
b) Soon - but still not yet shipping.
c) New ones are now coming in with flush screens.
Not gonna make this a poll.
Just want to know if those who have taken recent delivery have got flush screens....

Maybe your right, my touchscreen stopped working after use and the screen lift. I guess I should have kept it

I bought mine retail from Office Depot on 7/17 and haven't had a single problem with it.

In the UK I'm waiting until they physically have them in the stores. Right now it tends to be buy online and pick up in store a couple of days later. I got one last Friday from Tesco Direct and it had the screen-lift (this IS a fault) so took it straight back. I'd rather be taking back and getting a replacement straight away rather than waiting 2-3 days...or 10 days and counting with the crappy service offered by Google

Careful with buying in store. It may not be considered a fault (for the reasons expressed elsewhere in this thread) and if you do not have UK DSR law then you may not be able (allowed) to make a return. I wouldn't fancy my chances in CPW or Currys of doing a return if the device is functioning (but just not quite flush).

Most UK retailers allow you to return for simply not liking the product. In Tesco the guy told me it didn't matter if it was faulty as it was within their X days return. They'll be selling them in store in a couple of weeks apparently.
tribestos, fail to see how OCD relates to finding a fault on a piece of hardware. It's not like people are obsessively looking for faults. The screen isn't supposed to lift but it does. That's a design flaw.

So somebody must be taking the hit for all the returns... is it the retailer or do they just return the units back to the manufacturer and not pay for the duff ones ?

The replacement 7s poll has gotten sunnier, although people are voting prematurely. Also, it's not public, but I don't think many would tamper with it.
Although I have not seen a unit without this defect, there are at least a few posters there who should know exactly what to look for and haven't found any separation in their replacement whatsoever. That's a good sign, and that poll was pretty ugly last Wednesday, so the vast majority of respondents since then have been ticking perfect.
As for when this flaw will be officially dealt with, probably never. But don't hold that against Google. They can make right by rooting out the manufacturing flaw and dealing with unsatisfied customers on an individual basis. No need for any headlines.

Got my first Nexus 7 on the 17th. I was somewhat unhappy with how washed out the colors were. Also when I play a video the screen gets even more washed out for a short period of time. Generally just looks unsatisfactory. Also I have a row of pixels that sometimes flickers.
On the 24th I got my replacement Nexus 7. It was also washed out looking, had the same video playback issue. And the glass was raise on the left side if I held it there the screen would distort slightly.
I called Google today to get a feel on if I should try a second replacement or get a refund. The lady at Google said that Google has the new batch in now and says it has fixed the issues the first batch had with raised glass, pixel issues, and color quality.
So I'm doing a second RMA now. She's even letting me RMA the second device while I still have my first device (was worried I'd need to send that back before starting the second RMA).

Yeah, I hope she wasn't blowing smoke up my butt. That happens too. But I figure with the 16GB Nexus 7 suddenly returning to the Play store and the CS telling me this, it's hopefully correct.

[INFO] Dust under Transformer screen

Just wanted to inform everyone about an issue I had with my Transformer. I just received it today - beautiful screen and great device. After using it for a while I noticed a large spec of dust under the screen. After closer examination I noticed about 8+ specs of dust underneath. Looks like it either wasn't sealed properly or it was really dusty when mine was made. I can see them with the device on or off.
I almost ignored it but I can't - so it is going back.
Tried to exchange with Amazon.com - they can't even process an exchange right now since they are so far back ordered (apparently about 400+ still back ordered). They did put a note on my account and will allow me to exchange within 60 days when they get more though.
I also called Asus - they wanted me to send it back and issued an RMA - initially they wanted me to pay for shipping but they sent me a label after I explained I had had the device for only a few hours.
Dropping it off at Fedex to send back to Asus in just a bit.
I will keep everyone posted on how it goes...
Mine has only one speck of dust but it is a fairly large one. It was there out of the box so I'm assuming they do have issues with dust at the assembly plant... Please keep us updated on how the process goes. I'm on the fence with mine as to whether to just keep it or send it back for an RMA because of the uncertainty in how long it may take to process a return when there is no extra stock to work with.
They said it will take 10-14 business days - really hoping it is sooner than that.
I will let everyone know when I get it back though - I am just worried the replacement will have another issue if they don't fix my existing unit. Kinda curious if they will just replace it or clean the screen somehow.
My ex girlfriend use to work at ASUS and they were required to enter a pretty much white room with a makeshift hazmat suit, gloves and mouth guard. Basically they were dressed like white ninjas. I don't know how dust is getting in there.

Dust ninjas? The evil enemy of the white ninjas.......
I have a problem with my LCD panel, so I emailed ASUS to start an RMA.
Are you saying that ASUS doesn't offer cross-shipping? Ick, this might be a problem for me.

I think they might offer cross shipping (heard about that in the thread about bricked Transformers) but I didn't push them on it. I had a hard enough time getting them to pay for shipping. The 10-14 business days starts when they get the unit too - so it might be a while... Really hoping they were just padding the dates.
I've got one beautiful spec of dust under my screen as well, aboout 1/2 inch from the bottom. Might try to live with it because I'm afraid of getting one with more dust under it.
I'm at a lost to what I should do. I also have a large spec of dust about 2"in from the bottom left corner of the screen. Pretty noticeable when it is on or off.

Return it for replacement or refund.
Do not accept a defect just because supply is limited.
You will be reminded of this every time you use the device.
Wait for the next batch that hopefully have better quality control.
Ugh, dust under a touchscreen is my pet peeve. I have the Sony Touchscreen eReader and after about a year, there were dozens (more than 20) of dust particles under the screen. It was so bad, it became distracting to read. I ditched it for a Nook Color.
Hopefully I get lucky with my Transformer when/if I ever get one
I also have 1 spec of dust under the screen.
I didn't notice it at first because I was too excited when I got it.
Ugh, between all the issues I've read about (software and hardware) I'm a lil glad I decided to wait. This is the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. Here's hoping Asus and Google get their act together in time to take full advantage of Tegra 3.. Good luck with the first gen Transformer guys, you are true Android pioneers!
So - am I the only one that did an RMA with Asus for this issue? Anyone doing something about the dust or are you just living with it?

I sent mine in yesterday (see the first post for details) - the repair facility is in California. Like some of the other posters I am worried about getting one worse than what I sent in (or with other issues like dead pixels) but it isn't right to just accept something like so I sent it back to Asus.
well, count me in as another victim. got this one for my dad, and 1st thing i noticed was that the plastic sleeve was full of fingerprints. As though someone had handled the tablet before, but the asus seal was untouched on the box. On mine, the plastic sleeve was as clean as the display so I new something was up. Not only was there a spec of dust on the bottom right hand corner, there's also a dead pixel near bottom center.
My question is, do I return now and wait for restocks (got mine from BB 4 Bus) or do I wait til BB's return period is up? I've already given mine to my dad and in all honest, if I didn't look for it, I may have never seen them.
add me to the club. im thinking about returning it to amazon. i also found a piece of dust stuck under my screen.

Brand new SGS2, screen defect

I just took delivery of my SGS2 yesterday, and I gotta say I absolutely love this phone. Coming from an LG eXpo with WinMo 6.5 and never having used Android, it doesn't even feel like a phone. Plus with all the easy integration with my Google accounts, I've never had a smoother transition to a new device before. All this makes it all the more difficult for me to have to send it back...
I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this problem, but it looks like my phone came pre-packaged with burn in or something in the form of a dark circle near the upper right side of my screen. I've attached some photos of what it looks like.
I noticed this abnormality in the first 10 minutes or so of using the phone while looking at some photos on my Picasa account. I almost feel like this phone could have been a refurb unit, or the screen was reused or something. In fact, there appears to be more substantial burn in than I can photograph, as there are several other places where I can see strange distortions. Most, if not all, only show up when the brightness is less than 100%. I'd thought maybe it was some widget that caused the burn in, but I haven't been able to figure out which one it could be.
Anywho, I've already arranged an RMA thru Expansys-USA, and they did so without even asking any questions after my email with photos of the problem. So far I've received amazing support from Expansys-USA and definitely recommend them. Also going to see if I can request a replacement sent before I send back this one so I won't be without a phone during the shipping time, something they mention is possible in the RMA email (though they do charge you for it, to be refunded once they get the defective unit back and inspect it).
Would be interesting to see if anyone else has this problem. If there's already another post on this subject, sorry about this new one... didn't see any when I searched tho.
I can see the same thing on mine if I put it on the lowest brightness setting and display a grey image. Nowhere near as pronounced as on yours though, have to really really look for it, so can't be arsed to do anything about it.
Interesting that it's a perfect circle though, could it be just above the CPU or something?
Nope, haven't got that circle on mine at all.
Maybe an assembly worker lost their wedding ring, lol...
You'll be fine, it's an RMA for sure!
Defo a faulty phone
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I believe that mark is from the vacuum suction cup on the assembly line from the automated machine that handles positioning the display component. It technically should disappear over time, but I don't know how long.
I don't think it's the CPU, though to be honest I'm not sure where it is under the screen. There is that odd gold-colored sensor or whatever under that area, I think.
If it's a wedding ring, maybe this phone's worth more than the sticker price! haha
Vacuum cup huh... that's pretty bad if it's damaging the screen while doing that. I don't want to wait and see if it will disappear. If I do wait and it doesn't go away I'll be out $725 on a phone with a screen that'll constantly bug me.
Kinda funny, as I was looking at the photos I attached, I saw two rings... one in the photo, and the real one. Startled me when I first saw it.
I didnt have the same problem as you but i had line banding or something on my one.. i had to replace it 4 times then noticed it overheated+smell coming from it.. so i just returned it and got my money back.
Just be aware that you might get another faulty phone.. If i was you i would wait till it comes out in the US.
That sucks, and it's not good that other people are having some issues as well. Good to hear that Expansys is honoring their agreements though
This is why I don't import anymore

Man, that's really unlucky! Knock on wood, I hope I don't get another bad one. However I'm not sure waiting will do me much good. History has shown me that branded devices tend to have a lot of crap on them and lack certain features at times, and I don't have as much time as I used to to keep up with the scene to make the phone operate better all the time. Also, I'm contract-free with unlimited data on AT&T, and I don't like being locked into contracts. This isn't my first non-US phone, though. I'm happy to pay the extra money so long as it means I don't have to sign a contract.

From the Expansys-USA thread, sounds like they'll ship the phone back to the UK to have it serviced for you if it ever goes bad. This doesn't sound uncommon, either, as I've had a friend here ship his JP Xbox 360 back to Japan to have it serviced (with a another friend's JP address), and another friend in Japan had his laptop sent back here to have it serviced. Also, there's always the chance a non-import one will be bad, too. Luck of the draw, I guess, and perhaps early-adopter woes. lol
Got my replacement on Saturday, been playing with it ever since to see if I could find any further problems. Definitely no circle this time around, and some of the vertical banding I saw on my old phone in the notification screen is gone, but now has some very slight horizontal banding. Not a deal-breaker tho, so this one's staying with me. Also, hard to tell but I think the yellow/dark left screen problem is present, but so slight I can barely detect it if it's there and not a trick of the eye.
Gotta thank Expansys-USA for their great customer service. I'll definitely order from them again.

I would have it exchanged for another if you can. I had mine exchanged, but since I went with the cheap option the whole ordeal took almost a month (slow shipping). My replacement doesn't have a defect, but it's possible I have the yellow tint problem others have been reporting. I don't see it tho, and if it's there it doesn't bother me.

[Q] Will the screen separation get worse? I don't feel like exchanging

So, my question is, will the screen separation issue get any worse? The left side of my screen is slightly creaky, but it honestly doesn't bother me that much, and that is the only issue. I don't feel like going through the process to get it replaced, and as long as things don't get any worse, I'd really rather just keep the device I have considering I got it set up nice and pretty and installed an Xtremeguard on it.
I tightened the screw underneath, but I don't feel thrilled about tearing out any padding or exposing my N7 to extreme heat to reset the glue either, so I'm just going to leave it as is.
Also, if it does get worse, say half a year down the road, will I still be able to exchange it under the manufacturer's warranty, considering it is a defective product?
Thanks for the input in advance.
yes it does ge worse .. Mine is alot worse now then it was when i got it . Now goggle is giving me a run around in returning it .. They sent me a link to buy another one. With all the people having this issue i do not want another tablet with the same issue. After enough complaints they told me i can sent it back wait for a refund - restocking fee and reorder . or send it back and they will cross ship if i let them charge me again.
i say good luck either way it takes a month to get the money back . or a new tablet from what i have been reading on this and other forums .
My N7 has slight screen lift on the left, thus far I've done nothing to address it and it hasn't gotten any worse. It's been in a cheap folio case the majority of the time which seems to put some pressure on that side which may be preventing it getting worse, as others have reported that it does get worse over time.
I think it's down to personal preference, I didn't particularly want to go through the RMA process for a minor issue that doesn't seem to be getting worse (especially considering the extent of the issues others have faced). I may do the same and try to exchange it a few months down the line when these issues have been ironed out (or the quality control at Asus improves), it should still be covered under the warranty but as the N7 hasn't been out that long I don't think anyone has personal experience of it yet.

I have been assured by several reps that there will be no restocking fee for defective units, and that any amount of lifting is a legitimate defect.
They're probably just required to mention the possibility of a restocking fee when handling any return request, which can be confusing.
Hopefully the reps I spoke with were right and you just got a bad one, rather than the other way around.
I did discover lift on mine. It was sitting on a pile of book and was eye level when I noticed I couldn't see the middle section of the bezel on the left hand side. Turns out the middle section of the screen is on the same level as the bezel. It's not sticking out above the bezel, and when my folio case arrives I highly doubt i'll be taking it out a lot, so i'm honestly not too worried about it. Chances are, i'll end up buying the next Nexus tablet that comes out so I don't think it'll cause too many problems between now and then. Just gonna ride it out. Don't really feel like going through all the RMA hassle over a little lift. And who knows, I could very well end up with a tablet that's in even worse shape, lol. No biggie for me. And as always, nothing a little duct tape can't fix! (kidding, kidding)
I have a very slight lift also and haven't tried any fix method yet. Mine hasn't gotten any worse with heavy use in the last 2 weeks.

Wow that's definitely not something I wanted to hear. I've noticed, literally, a hairline life on the left side and was hoping to leave it as is since everything else seems OK. How long did it take for yours to become noticeably worse, by the way?

Can someone advice on this

I ordered a Nexus 7 16GB from Google Store and it ships tomorrow. I have used Asus tablets before but never have seen one with these severe problems like cracked screens, lifted screens, and flickering of screens. Seems some people get a good working tablet and others get crappy ones. Did I make a big mistake ordering from Google as far a returns and exchanges go?

Seems some people get a good working tablet and others get crappy ones. Did I make a big mistake ordering from Google as far a returns and exchanges go?

As far as returns you made the best possible choice, as Google sends you a new tablet and you send the old one back in cases of screen lift or light bleed or flickering. On the bright side all these reports are blown out of proportion either by detractors or just by nitpickers posting the same rant on different threads to let out frustration. The truth is the majority of N7 owners are happy, as am I. Have fun with your N7.
You didn't make a mistake. Your best bet is a retail store or Google. Other online retailers, and ebay, I would say you made a bad choice.
Good luck!
Thanks! Okay that is a relief to hear, now I will have to look for these defects and see if they are any as Google only allows 15 days to return.

If you buy it from the play store then you've made the right decision. Yes there was a chance that there was some problem with the initial batch, but its all fixed by now. Plus if there is any wrong with it google will replace it for no question asked.
Just got mine today with C70K batch and it had the left side screen lift, not as bad as I've seen, but its there. I contacted Google and they will replace it, but I wonder if the next one will be the same.

only problem with the google replacement is you have to live without that $300 for a week or so :silly:
Are you talking about the cross shipping charge? If so, its okay, it would be like a temporary charge on my credit card.
The problem is, damn I wonder if I will eventually get a good tablet. The lifted screen looked bad, when you press it, it sticks for a while then lifts up...unacceptable.

Although the chances of getting a perfectly flush screen are dicey, it sounds like the lift of the one you received is unusually obvious and severe.
While you have this one, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get acquainted with the defect.
Try turning it on and pressing the left side to see if there's any distortion, like dark ripples. Listen for any sticking or clicking noises while you do this. Does it feel spongey? These are things you should check for even if your screen lift weren't noticeable.
But there are perfect units out there, so if your replacement has problems just keep trying.
I didn't bother testing more before I quickly contacted Google for my replacement. No problem getting it replaced without giving me the walk-around, pretty good return experience. Hopefully my next tablet isn't defective, I will find out later tonight.

2nd Device came in and same deal, left side lift and now this one has right corner lift that makes a cracking sound when pressed down. Also it was C70K stock, so I have contacted Google once more for a replacement.

Got my replacement again today and this one seems to be alright. Still C70K batch, but no serious screen lift (minor - just a tad), no dead pixel, speaker works, headphone output works, and no screen flicker either. I think I am sticking with this one for now but have some questions if anyone can answer them.
Does anyone know how Google handles if defects appear after their initial 15 day return period? I mean do you send in the tablet and if found defective, then you get it repaired or replaced and does it cost anything more than shipping for us while under the 12 month warranty?

Nexus 7 just showed up from Google Play Aug31, left side of the screen is separating.

I hadn't even heard of this problem and didn't notice it until a couple hours after I had been playing with the device while I was searching in frustration how to get the drivers to root on Windows 8.
Good thing I never figured it out before I noticed the left side of the glass was sticking up just a tiny bit on my brand new Nexus 7. It's still stock If I want to return it. I can push down and hold the middle part of the left side of the screen for a few seconds and it seems to stay down for a few minutes but eventually keeps popping back up just slightly. I've searched and seen videos on youtube where some go to extreme measures of pulling the device apart and tightening screws or clamping it together for hours while leaving it playing HD movies until the battery dies and other methods way beyond those.
Do I I just try and put this flaw out of my mind and be grateful I didn't get a device like some other threads I've found (dead pixels, dead touch zones, brightness issues, etc.) or do I complain to Google ASAP and ask for a replacement while it's still new?
Will they send me out a new device first and then make me ship this unit back or vice versa?

I have the exact same problem, the left side is coming out a tiny bit. when using it i cant notice it, but when i look from the side i can notice it, but its only a tiny bit. im keeping mine, i have no problems whatsoever with mine (apart from that)
I notice it all the time now that I'm aware of it. After playing with the tablet all night, it's like a tick now to check if the left side is staying down or not.
I realize this is a budget device and form factor may not have been a priority but, after choosing the 16gb version, taxes and shipping, I spent over $280 on the Nexus 7. It's not a $199 tablet.
I want to try another one but maybe only if Google Play's return policy is on the same level as Amazon where they would 2nd day air you a duplicate product with a return label. So you would have a new device before you give up the old one and wait for who knows how long for it to be serviced and returned... not to mention if you are on the hook for return shipping costs.
Send it back and hope you get one from the new batch.

Ordering just a week ago I would have thought I got the latest batch. In my googling though it looks like there is a newer version than what UPS dropped off at my door on 2012-08-31.I believe the relevant info is the SSN on my box an it is C70*
If I had bought this at a brick and morder, I would take it back and exchange it today. Since I didn't and I'm at the mercy of Google and the 3rd party call centers they've hired to handle this kind of think, I'm not sure what I should do.

They email you the return label and RMA form to print out and let you order a free replacement (actually they place a $250 preauth charge on your card that should disappear after a few days)
You get 21 days to send back the defective unit, but the new one should arrive before then.

C80 has the same issue, took a C70 back yesterday pick up a new one today C80 & straight out of the box its there. I did read that by asking the back off and nipping up the screws on the LH side sorts the issue although I'm yet to try that fix.

Pop the back off, loosen the screws on the left side then hold the edge tight while you tighten the screws and it should take care of the separation.

I also ended up with a C8 with lift on the left side, new batch doesn't resolve the issue at all, still luck of the draw whether you will get one that has issues or not.

This might work but doesn't help everybody, mine was lifting again after a little bit.

It isn't to fix screen lift, it's to fix the separation between the bezel and the edge of the screen.

Seperation/ screen lift, is the same thing. Look at the link I posted, you can see my bezel and edge of the screen separating. If it worked for you, thats awesome like I said it worked on one of mine for a little before seperating again. It isn't a permanent fix for everyone
I hate hearing that "this is a budget device so it's just something you have to deal with." We paid $200-250 for a tablet. Not $200-250 for a tablet with the left side of the screen popping up above the bezel. The lower price point doesn't disqualify us from from returning one unit to get one that isn't defective. You are well within your rights to do so if it bothers you.

Quoted for the absolute truth. :good::good::good::good::good::good:
Wow isn't this like the one thousand thread about screen separation?

I have the same problem. C80...
BUT:
I really don't think that thigthening those screws or adding the missing ones is a good choice here.
If you consider that Asus leaves those screws out of the device on purpose than there can only be one reason:
To me it looks like the display is to big for the frame it might just be 0.1mm or less.
Leaving the screws out will then avoid to add pressure on the display due to pushing it into the too small frame.
That could be the reason that not every device in a batch is bad. They just have a couple of bad positions at molding where they get too tiny frames, the others are OK.
...my 2 cents...
I will keep sending mine back until I get one without missing screws.
Edit: or the two outer screws are too close together. This would even make more sense.
I have exactly the same problem with my Nexus 7. It's an C80. Otherwise the tablet just works perfect.
Is it possible that the screen can break in the future because of that separation? Had someone recognized that the gap got bigger at the C80?
Thanks for your answers.
I'd say if you don't push it down/flex the glass you will be fine.
Yes it is and it is ot covered by the warranty if the screen cracks. Ask for replacement
