Hi guys!
I have just bought a Nexus7 32gb WiFi.
Which is the best way to root my device?
I don't want to try custom roms yet.
Just to have the stock firmware but rooted.
Should i prefer to use a toolkit with all the steps of unlock bootloader / root etc,
or maybe something else (ex.CF-Auto-Root etc)..?
Thanks in advance!

Used that the first day I had it. Couldn't ask for easier rooting. Start with 1 and work your way down to what you need.

Thanks for the reply.
And now the noob question..
If i'll unlock & root the device, it might cause problems to accept ota updates..?
After ota update, i suppose that needs root again..?
It won't cause problems with OTA updates - OTA updates simply will not work, period.
If you want the release of an OTA update after you root, you will have to go back to stock again to get the update.

So, after rooting, what's the way to get the updated firmwares?
Use OTA RootKeeper (http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&hl=en)
... it will backup your root (SU binary) and with it you can temporarily unroot - get the OTA update, and restore root again.
Rgrds,
Ged.
I don't want to offend MSkip at all, but I tried both toolkits and MSkip's is just not as friendly as Wug's.
Wug's toolkit is the simplest and easiest way of rooting I have ever experienced. Its that good, my nan could root the bloody thing, and she can't even use a touch device.
Like I said, no offence MSkip but Wug, your my winner.

Agreed, Wug's toolkit is supreme.
I've only used Wug's so I can't comment on any others, but I can agree that yes, Wug's toolkit is supreme.

Hello,
I just bought a Nexus 7 for my girlfriend, and followed directions to unlock bootloader/root it and it was very easy to do (thanks Devs!).
My question is, it keeps prompting to do a system update. If I run the system update, will it retain root? If not can I re-root after the update?
I shot myself in the foot with my Sony Tablet S after applying the ICS update and lost root and there is no work around at the moment. I dont want the same thing to happen to the Nexus 7 so asking if anyone as ran into this yet.
Thanks in advance

Nexus 7 rooting is EZMODE!!! Thanks to the badass toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
So I'm planning on using WugFresh's toolkit to root my Nexus 7. Its my understanding right now that as long as I keep the stock recovery I should still be able to receive OTA updates. Is this correct? I'm not interested in flashing any roms or recoveries, just want to get root access but keep the ability to get OTA updates. Will this work for me?

Yes, if you simply just root your device, then OTA updates will be fine.
I did the same with my N7
But I used the other toolkit, cant remember the creator but didn't use WugFresh

Hi all,
im new to this game so please be kind. i have a nexus 7,rooted it and unlocked it,main reason for that was so that i could install stuff from blackmarket alpha that a friend showed me. just heard of the 4.1.2 update and as of yet havent recieved the prompt for OTA. will i still recieve it or will i have to do it manually because i have no clue how to do that and am worried of loosing my root and/or data.
i used this method to root and unlock

I just got it OTA. When you get OTA updates, you lose root. To restore root, use VooDoo OTA RootKeeper from the play store. It worked for me

Does it take an arm and limb for OP to use a search engine or the search function in this forum?

I've just got OTA too, last night .. to 4.1.2 .. (and yes, my tablet is rooted, and bootloader opened, but with Stock Rom)
.. but after installing the OTA, nothing happened, still 4.1.1 .. and still have root, didn't lose it .. basicly the tablet tried to update, but it wasn't successfully .. any idea? .. do i have to unroot before OTA update? .. and, when i try to search for update in "Settings - About Tablet" it saying "Up to Date.. ." .. strange :/
p.s. sorry for my weak English
Did you modify the build.prop or install a custom recovery?
On the Asus TF201, once you unlock the bootloader, installing an OTA update would brick the tablet.
I'm wondering: why it is okay to receive OTA updates on a rooted Nexus 7 with an unlocked bootloader when doing this on the Asus TF201 would brick it?
Right now, my Nexus 7 is running the latest OTA 4.2. It's rooted and unlocked. I want to make sure that when I try to install the next OTA update, I won't brick my Nexus 7.
How did you update your nexus 7, mine failed for both 4.1.2 and 4.2, I'm stocked in 4.1.1. I got the updates OTA on the n7 but when it restarted and try to update it failed.

When I received my update, I was rooted with a locked bootloader. I received a notification that an update was ready to install, and I installed the OTA update. I forgot to use the rootkeeper app, so I lost root. I used Wug's tool to unlock the bootloader and re-root. Wug's toolkit didn't have an option to re-lock the bootloader like a previous toolkit that I had used, so I'm left wondering about the significance of leaving the bootloader unlocked with respect to being able to receive OTA updates. I don't have a desire to flash a custom recovery or custom ROMs on my Nexus 7. I do that on my Galaxy Nexus and Asus TF201, but I just like receiving the stock OTA updates quickly and easily on my Nexus 7.

Guys I need your help.
I have a rooted n7 with build JRO03D. I think that's 4.1.1.
Then a couple of days, Google is prompting me to update into their latest software which is 4.1.2 JZO54K
I agreed to download it then my device restarted.
Then I noticed that Supersu is denying root access to my apps (like stickmount, gamecih).
I found out that updating will unroot your device. I'm only a noob when it comes to android. So I still need to learn more.
My question is do I need to re-root it again? Will wugfresh's toolkit work on it? Which I doubt coz JZO54K is only 2 days old.
Any guides to root it again? Thanks guys.

Don't update so fast in the future. Especially if you are rooted. You can hard brick your device at worst. Some people said root is still possible through the tool kit, but wait a little while.

Wooaah! It really does include 4.1.2! Well that was fast. Thanks!
You're a life saver! Downloading now. appreciated.:good:
In running stock 4.4.4 n7 2012. Unlocked bootloader and rooted. Will the update break root.
See plenty of posts on how to root from flashing advance update but none on ota and if it will unroot. Thanks in advance.
Yes. Update replaces kernel and system, so root is lost.

Is there an easy way to do it? Preferably without the use of a computer. Had a hell of a time whenever i rooted my nexus. Shockingly my Motorola and sony devices are way easier to root.

Following the update (I didn't OTA, I adb'd) I wasn't able to regain root without a computer, I tried. Here are my steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/general/update-nexus-7-to-5-0-4-4-4-root-t2943726
I updated from 4.4.4, unlocked and rooted like you. I used CF-Auto-Root to gain root using my Mac, but Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit might be easier if you are on PC.
