I have been using my Nexus 4 for about a month already. Just yesterday i was unable to hear anything on a call. When I call someone, they person on the other end can hear me but i cant seem to hear anything. But if i were to put it on loudspeaker it works fine.
I tried a factory reset, it worked for awhile but then it later on stopped and it doesnt work for other voice call apps such as skype. Any ideas?
If a factory reset temporarily fixed it, you could try flashing the stock images. Follow efrant's guide that is stickied in general.
Just tried, but still cant hear anything..

hmm i just realized i cant play anything on my speaker ie songs and notifications. But i am able to hear calls on loudspeaker and get ringtones on calls. Any ideas anyone?

I flashed a custom ROM it didn't work and later on flashed back the stock image and everything was working fine.. Able to hear calls and listen to music on the speaker. This was working fine for like 3 days. Now its back to square one can't hear calls on earpiece and music and so on on the speaker. But ringtones are playing well and calls can only be heard on loudspeaker's. Anybody able to help ?? Kind of being a pain ?

Did you install any sound mods? I had a similar-but not exactly the same problem that caused by installing Xloud + Clear Audio mod. Complete wipe and flashing stock ROM fixed it.
Nope never installed any sound mods.. But I realized just prior to it being problematic for the second time the Google voice search app always popped up for no apparent reason

Woke up today and noticed I had a lot of missed calls and messages. Tried to send myself a message and noticed there is no sound. Could the hardware be damaged? I did not install anything and I already checked everything on the system. Can anyone give suggestions?

I hate to ask, but I have to really. Do you have ringtone volume turned up? Also, in case you're not aware, you can set ringtone and system volume to be 2 different things.
Other than that, if the volume is turned up fully, can you play a music file and see if that works? Try every possible software solution before thinking it's hardware.

Yep. Did all of that. I even re-flashed the ROM just to make sure but still nothing. Guess I'll have for warranty.

Just one final check - does the earphone socket work? If it does then it's obviously a speaker problem. If the earphones don't work either then it would suggest software, but I really don't see what software could cause this after a ROM flash.
Yes the speakers socket work. Calls are fine. It's just the rear speaker that is not working. I also tried plugging/unplugging the earphones coz it happened before that after removing the earphones there was no sound. But before it worked, now still nothing.

Sounds like it's broken then mate. Sorry to say it, but I reckon you do have to get it replaced. Bad times
I have a serious problem with my nexus. The earpiece and microphone are both muted. I can listen to music, camera records audio, the dialer has just basically ignored the speaker and microphone. This is a brand new phone, stock rom 4.2.2 Jellybean. I know it's not a problem with the hardware, because Skype works without any problems.
I have tried booting the phone in safe mode, doing a factory reset and trying to use an app called soundabout from the store. Is my only option returning the phone? At this point you have probably figured out that I can't make any phone calls or receive them, making my phone a nice paper weight. I already posted this in the help thread, so sorry for being a douche, but I'm desperate.

Are you rooted? Have a custom recovery installed? I can help, but need more info

It sound like a software problem. You can either use root and install a stock or custom rom and recovery, or send it back. What i would do is unlock the bootloader and root

however when my friend calls me over skype or viber on my phone the speaker and mic is working perfectly fine and we can talk?Does anybody know what could be a problem hw or sw?Tnx in advance

Seem problems of the ROM. Flash other custom ROM or flash STOCK one.

The problem is with "Phone" app
You need to replace it or factory reset or flashing a system folder

I have already Flash 2 different rom in each case factory reset wipe dalvink memory etc and no luck, if I call for example on hangouts I have no problems.
I will try deleting the phone app

I'm using Rooted stock rom. My phone is working well when I talk as normal mode, ie. keep the ear next to the phone. But it has problem when I use it as 'speaker phone'. It seems like the microphone is having problem that people on the other side cannot hear me.
I tried to install CM, but the problem is still the same. Is there any fix for that?

Try flashing the factory images, and without restoring any data, try making a call attempt. If the microphone is still not working in speaker mode... then I have no idea what may be causing it, but it's hardware.
So I know there are other threads with the same issue but mine is a bit different. I found out that when I'm talking to someone on my lg g2(d802) cellphone they can't hear me so I tried everything and I found out that they can hear me perfectly when I turn on the speaker mode while calling(getting the persons voice played through the phones bottom speaker), so I think thats really weird because my microphone won't work without a speaker mode on while calling. It's not a rom related issue because noone using rom FR 2.0.1 Didn't had this problem and also idk if this is related with this but in the recovery I'm unable to flash any zip and also first time when I installed the recovery i updated it with flashing new recovery 2.8.4.0 and my phone somehow automaticly downgraded it to the one i had before and I'm unable to flash new twrp recovery/viper4andoid/etc... Error message is different every time which is also weird. For example for twrp it is something like asster failed(run_program). Idk if that is related with microphone issue but I wanted to provide all data. Also I have a KK baseband. Thanks for reading.

It's weird. I tried everything and still the same problem. It appeared just after I flashed a new rom and I tried going back to stock and still the same issue

my lg g2 d802 4.4.2 had this problem, they can hear me but like i'm far away. try to stop voice control in all pages in Google search.
when i had this problem vocal and video record don't go, it appears i'm using microphone on another app. i stop vocal control and the phone now i going better!
"ok Google" in all page its very confortable but if the phone still dont call, nothing to do!

Had this issue on an iPhone and a Windows Phone. Microphone is probably shot. Different mic used for when it is on speakerphone compared to calls. Usually cannot record video audio either...sucks.
