for those who may be interested...it is possible to have your hero flashed to work on the Cricket network. it may not be for everyone, but i couldn't resist the lure of $40/mo unlimited everything with no contract. (saves around $1,000+ over the life of the contract)
here's what i did:
-buy cdma hero on ebay
-go to a cricket store and ask them to activate the phone
-usually the rep will "know a guy" who can work with htc (try a few stores or call around)
-they may charge you $30 or so to flash it and its working
wireless data, visual voicemail, and mms dont' work...but they expect to get them working soon (phone is only a few weeks old at this point)... and where i'm at, i almost always have wifi and don't care about vm or mms.
Might see if any of these guys know about xda...perhaps they just need to be pointed here to share the wealth of what they're doing.
HTC Hero Phone Code Numbers ##
if you do transfer to cricket (or perhaps another cdma carrier), a good thing to know is:
##000000#
this will allow you to edit or view EPST (change/view your Mobile Directory Number MDN and MSID)
The MDN is your current phone number, your local cricket store can give you your MSID (which also depends on your phone number).

The radio is separate from the OS and the traditional CDMA tools work on the Hero like any other phone. There are plenty of other forums talking about how to port CDMA phones to other providers; especially Indian forums because there are large CDMA networks there.
Edit: when he says "flash it," he probably just means to put a new PRL (preferred roaming list) and editing the details under ##DATA to match what another provider wants.

"Broadband Workaround Trick"
Hey guys!
I'm new to the Hero (CDMA Sprint flashed to Cricket) and Android. Totally new. I'm no stranger to Windows Mobile though, I've been a pretty intense user and contributor to development on the Axim x51v. Thought it was time to update though, and here I am.
Now, I've googled my butt off (which is going to make it tough to poop later, for sure), and I just can't find much detail or step by step info on how to get internet access working on this thing other than Wifi.
I have phone/text, and I also bought a Cricket Broadband plan to go along with it.
My phone is not rooted, not unlocked, unless this was part of what they did at the Cricket store to get my Hero flashed to Cricket.
I've read some mentions in google searches about a way to use my Broadband service through my phone... but I need some step by step info on how to do this. Can anyone help? What would be handy, as a somewhat savvy noob, would be prerequisites, instructions, and info I'll need to do this.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help, and I apologize in advance if I didn't google well enough before asking... although I definitely gave it a damn good shot before asking for help!
I've never tried it, so i don't know, but i have flashed a lot of WM phones to cricket with working mms and WAP. I would think you could get the internet to work by entering first changing your msl to 000000 and then just entering in all the correct settings in your EPST like you would a windows mobile phone?
cricket wap on hero
the phone has built in proxy support so u can download anycut from the market and input "wap.mycricket.com" and "8080" in the proxy settings. however most of the internet apps dont work, but the browser does. i believe the broadband hack or possibly the html plan will help in getting the internet apps to work but havent tried yet
htc hero wap no working
.i have a sprint htc hero that had cellular south on it now its flashed to cricket.the only thing working is calling.can you walk me through getting internet.i belive my wap setting are set up,but when i try and connect to mobile network it says "standbye for connecting to mobile network then connecting and keeps repeating"i have read that iv got to root the phone.iv been trying to root with no success.and hepl please .ty
htc hero cricket
please help dont want to try anything till im shure .lol
its actually possible. my friend works for cricket and got a sprint branded touch pro working. he just has voice and mms. but its a start i guess. i needs my data lol.
so why would you want a hero that only half the features work on?
i have an htc hero...i live in laredo tx..if anyone knows how i can flash this cell phone to cricket please let me know..they have told me that they dont have the software to do so..please HELP ME!!! *TeAr* and where did u guyz flash it so i can go overthere if i cant do to here....

APN setting?. I'm down in Puerto Rico with a company called Centennial and I don't any idea what my APN setting are and the APN view in setting is disabled. I try every way to rooted with no luck. My firmware version is "1.63.556.1" I'm planning to use the Goldcard procedure to update. Thanks in advance.
Your prl should have that information soo
Doing that should just change your software, which would be 1.5 to 2.1 without changing your apn.
Also you can update your profile and prl once in 2.1 if everything goes right that should fix it, if changed.
Also have you seen the guide for non sprint phones?
Is Centennial even CDMA? From the looks of the wikipedia page, it's a subsidiary of at&t in puerto rico

My bad, I wasn't sure, so that's why I phrased my initial post as a question. Thanks for clearing it up.
After reading and googling Centennial and cdma htc hero.
I think if he were to have the htc hero, he would be using gsm. I cant find anything that has to do with cdma htc hero on Centennial. But numerous sites take me to the GSM hero that say compatible services Centennial. Like this one.
http://www.cellhut.com/HTC-Hero-Goo...ed-QuadBand-Touchscreen-WiFi-Phone-15971.html
When you go to Centennial.com and type a puerto rico address, it takes you to att.com. If you try to find a store and tpye in a puerto rico address all the stores are att.
And reading att's website about upgrading your phone..
I think you can upgrade your plan with a newer phone, on att's original gsm network.

I just found the Hero he's talking about...it is definitely a CDMA Hero:

FINALLY
hey, hadn't worked up the nerve to ask for help rooting my CDMA HTC Hero from Centennial in Puerto Rico... there's so much info to go through!
So yea, what do you guys suggest I do at this point? Should I wait for an OTA update from my small-ish provider? If I wanted to go ahead and root, should I try markachee's Goldcard rooting tech?
Thanks a lot, you guys so amazing things here!
Got any more info on this? Got a Friend that want to go to 2.1 with Centennial, but has no idea con what to do.
Hey, fellow centennial HTC Hero user here. I like my phone so far, but I was promised by centennial that they would fix the MMS issue with a "manufacturer update" which i guessed would be android 2.1 Eclair. Since yesterday I've called customer service a couple of times and the people in that country (not PR) tell me that I should do that myself...surprising...
oh yeah and I tried updating with the Sprint installer, and it stops when it detects it obviously isn't a Sprint phone.
EDIT: Just talked to a customer service representative from PR and said that when the update arrives (no date) it will be available from their website.
Backup/restore or Manual programming? Non-Sprint Rom issues, *288 not working!

I did it, but honestly I am not an expert on this and I am still struggling with some issues. A good place to start is to know what information we need to backup just in case Sprint based Roms brake phone programming. I know PRL is one of those and you can back it up with QSPT Configuration app.
Beware... some post suggest to clear DSA Server URL, do a *228, and that’s all!, but it will not work after the initial/first *228 setup from Centennial even on untouched phones, so programming will need to be manually, I think… or convince them to re-enable on the air programming for the unit... and, well that is where my problems are..
Did anyone know about how to backup and restore ALL those settings that can cause problems? i.e. PRI, PRL, SID, etc.... and of course, what to do if you didn't backup and now need to make sure you have the right setting...
UPDATE: decided to try upgrading from another provider in PR which offers the cdma hero (name does not start with a T or an S ) and a rep said their update required a phone # input (which there wasn't). Just followed instructions on the installer's attached readme and used a contact, sms, calendar, etc backup app from the market before update. Updated smoothly, reinstalled backup app and restored my contacts, etc.
Finally Bluetooth file sharing is possible amongst other nice 2.1 features!!!

ok im wondering, i want to be able to root a Centennial Hero in order to flash ROMs on it. can it be done?
maybe i am not using the search tool properly nor posting this in app section.
But anyone know any way to do so?
my xperia x10 is half dead already i would like to 3g tether to tablet for 3g uses.
I search the market for app, none of them seem to support it. Is there another method? I am not too great with this sort of things
would like a detail guide or explanation.
thank you.
p.s: also i would like to ask, is it possible to use rocket mobile 3g fingers from rogers (i live in canada) to obtain 3g? sorry i am not technical so no idea how these things goes.
I don't know anything about rocket mobile, but I just downloaded Quick Wifi Hotspot from the market yesterday and it worked fine while at the restaurant. I left the network open and named it my name and connected via the tablet with no issues. It's also free and that is helpful Hopefully it's compatible with whichever rom/android version you are using. I have an HD2 with an Android 2.3 ROM based on C7 (I think that's all the requisite info).
I have cheap zip cricket cell phone. I do love crickets service here in my area.thou some say its lame elsewhere.
Anyway I rooted my cell installed wireless tether.and when I turn it on my tablet or my notebook will connect automatically and its great for most things even tried Netflix yesterday. Pared with crickets unlimited plan for 50.00 a month.
Set wireless tether to Mac address security lots of people will try to connect.to use your internet.some just do it automatic ..
thank you, the reason i posted this is because my x10 still run on grandpa software (at least not 1.6) android 2.1.
Acer have an instruction on how to enable portable wi-fi option on phone and ad-hoc but 2.1 doesn't have that option yet.
since my phone is already half dead (thank to SE's crappy product), i don't know if i can root it and install custom rom before it brick or dead completely.
i will check out that method thanks.

Not to be skeptical but your post sounds suspiciously like one by another first time poster a few lines down that got flamed out.
If you're for real I believe Metro PCS is able to hook up the phone via its ESN which is behind the battery, assuming it isn't flagged. Go to a Metro PCS shop and try it, worst they could say is no. Otherwise you're SOL.
I think the mods need to do an IP check on this guy to see if it's multiple accounts..

lol no this is litterally the 1st time ive ever posted on this site. i dont like posting usually cause some 1 else already asked the same question
I would like to know this as well. I am using it my CDMA xperia play as a game device only. I have T Mobile and obviously the phone won't work on that network. If you wondering why, I got a great deal on the phone via Craigslist and it was a while ago when people were still unsure about the sim card slot on the rear of the device and I thought it might be worth a gamble if for some way we got the sim slot working and I could put my T-mo card in it and get service.
Back to the MetroPCS question. I've never activated a 3rd party CDMA phone on a carrier before. Is it as easy as calling metro customer service and giving them the make, model and ESN? I know for certain the phone is not activated on verizons network, it never was as long as I owned it. Does Vz need to "release" the phone from their network before it can be activated somewhere else?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm familiar with GSM tech, not so much with CDMA...
You are going to have to get metropc to do the flashing for you. They only do it in certain areas and I believe they check for dirty ESNs. Some places charge $40 but other people can charge you whatever they want since they are basically doing you a favor. Also you won't be able to access all of the things you are paying for like "Internet Access".
Also if they brick your phone while flashing, that is on you.
you must know a bit of knowledge to flash it to metro pcs
if you dont id suggest to take it to someone to flash it for you but goodluck not to many people are doing it
but if you wanna go at it yourself ill run you thru real quick
download and install cdma workshop and qpst
turn on usb debugging on your xperia
after that open up your phone dialer and type in ##3424 and hit call itll take u back to your home screen now hook up the phone to the computer and if ur using win 7 itll auto download the drivers etc
this will go you a diag port go into your device man on your computer and check what port its under crucial part
now fire up cdma work shop and connec to the port your xperia is on and read and then write 000000 as the spc code
now fire up qpst and inject your metro pcs prl file and mess witht he internet settings thru qpst
will make a full tutorial soon as i get a chance
you don't need to connect the xperia play to the computer or use any softwar to flash it all you need to do is download the metroPCS prl and you do that by filing on the phone *22804 that will connect u to metroPCS then you press 5 or option 5 that will download the metro roaming list which are the prls after that your done dile *228 and you will hear the metro pcs hello hello this also works for iPhone 4 on verizone
Still have to get the ESN added by physically going into a metropcs store that has the houdini software. You can't just sit home and jump to metropcs database lol.

By the way this don't work! I tried it on the xperia R800x that has been added already to the inventory. *228 gets an error and *22804 calls verizon. I tried multiple prls and changed network locations.
Is there anyone who has successfully activated VZ Sony Ericsson Xperia Play on Metropcs?
These are the steps I took:
1) I have unlocked the phone
2) Rooted the phone
3) Installed Metropcs PRL
4) Inventory Added to Database
Now when I dial *228 I I get a recording "The number or code you dial is incorrect"
Now when I dial *22804 I hear a beep like a pager.
Now when I dial *611 or 611 I am connected to verizon.
Can anyone out there point me in the right direction?

the process is called "metroflash" and costs $30 at your local metro pcs location

**go to the metropcs store and have them flash it for you!!
***remember you wont be able to use picture mail or internet afterwards (although i have heard that there are hacks)
im sorry no one else has answered your question yet
Why would a flashed Xperia PLAY be unable to get online?
I have a Droid Milestone X that I had rooted for a friend and had the MEID # checked by Verizon to make sure it was cleared for verizon's network. The Service tech said it was good to go, which in turn means the phone will have no issues connecting to Verizon's network. However, when he went to connect service at the verizon store the phone wouldn't accept service through verizon. What is the underlying issue and how could this be fixed?
Thanks for the help in advanced

the milestone is a european version of the droid x, it can be used on VZ network however in order to do this is needs to be SBF to a android version that works on the network, I.E. froyo, gingerbread.
you need to see what version of milestone x is now and SBF it over to the compatible version wich would be android based. Unfortunatly there are numerous versions floating around that you can choose from and some will lock you into a version you cant escape like the .621 version. so you need to know what version your can put on your milestone that verizon still uses.
I would start by looking at your settings on the milestone to see what version it is. you can do this by:
hitting home button, then selecting settings then go to about phone.. there is will tell you what everything is. it will tell you MODEL OF PHONE and it should say milestone X, version should say android 2.3.3 or something similar but I dont know what version you have, then look for baseband vers, then kernel vers,. after you find all that you can look on google or droidx forums online and look for whatever you have and find out what Verizon verzion is compatible still then you will need to SBF, RSDlite, or live CD it over...... if you dont know what any of that means then you should look on forums on how to do that. after you have done that you should be able to set it up on Verizon. what ever you do stay away from the .621 update, if you use that one you will be stck on that and wont be able to move off it....
