3g from phone teher to a500 tablet? - Acer Iconia A500

maybe i am not using the search tool properly nor posting this in app section.
But anyone know any way to do so?
my xperia x10 is half dead already i would like to 3g tether to tablet for 3g uses.
I search the market for app, none of them seem to support it. Is there another method? I am not too great with this sort of things
would like a detail guide or explanation.
thank you.
p.s: also i would like to ask, is it possible to use rocket mobile 3g fingers from rogers (i live in canada) to obtain 3g? sorry i am not technical so no idea how these things goes.

I don't know anything about rocket mobile, but I just downloaded Quick Wifi Hotspot from the market yesterday and it worked fine while at the restaurant. I left the network open and named it my name and connected via the tablet with no issues. It's also free and that is helpful Hopefully it's compatible with whichever rom/android version you are using. I have an HD2 with an Android 2.3 ROM based on C7 (I think that's all the requisite info).

I have cheap zip cricket cell phone. I do love crickets service here in my area.thou some say its lame elsewhere.
Anyway I rooted my cell installed wireless tether.and when I turn it on my tablet or my notebook will connect automatically and its great for most things even tried Netflix yesterday. Pared with crickets unlimited plan for 50.00 a month.
Set wireless tether to Mac address security lots of people will try to connect.to use your internet.some just do it automatic ..

thank you, the reason i posted this is because my x10 still run on grandpa software (at least not 1.6) android 2.1.
Acer have an instruction on how to enable portable wi-fi option on phone and ad-hoc but 2.1 doesn't have that option yet.
since my phone is already half dead (thank to SE's crappy product), i don't know if i can root it and install custom rom before it brick or dead completely.
i will check out that method thanks.

Hero Wifi router???

I have a touch pro and going to upgrade to a hero or touch pro 2. i really like the hero however i am a heavy user of wm Wifi router on the touch pro so i can use the phone as a hot spot. i know the touch pro 2 can use this program, however is there a program like this for android? if so how good is it. WM wifi router is amazing, only thing bad is how bad it drains the battery but thats expected because of what its doing.
I think this is what you're looking for:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/FAQ
THANKS!!! thats exactly what i was looking for. even looks similar to WMwifi-router
anyone used it to see how well it works? if this works well im ditching the touch pro 2 and Windows mobile for the android and hero!!!
Works as expected, with decent battery consumption. If you look a few threads behind this one some people are having problems with the older release, install the latest build.
If you're on Sprint you'll have to wait till rooting is available for the CDMA hero.
Good luck
yeah im getting it for sprint....what do you mean by waiting for rooting on CDMA...those programs are only for the GSM version of the hero?
No, you need root access to change protected settings/files set by HTC. If you're a windows guy, think of it as administrator privileges.
Since the Sprint version has just been released, getting root access has not yet been discovered. We are all fairly certain that it will be, but it is a risky procedure that can brick your phone (I'm assuming that since you're here on xda you've already considered that).
Read the forums here for a bit and the answer will come
You could always try PdaNet for Android. It cost $29 after the trial is up, but doesn't require rooting. Not sure how well it works though since I haven't tried it.
I have never been able to get this working.
I have HTC Hero rooted (Android 1.5).
I have installed Wireless Thether 1.52.
I can run Wireless Tether noi prolbems.
Both my laptops can connect and get an IP address and Wireless Tehther shows them as connected.
However, I cannot connect to the internet. No routing appears to take place at all. I connot even ping the wireless interface of the hero from the laptop.
Anyone else had this or know the answer ?
USB tethering works beautifully but I would like to get this working too just because it's so cool
I'm Sprint guy as well, can't wait for this to be available.
sprint guy here too...looking for a way to simply tether the damn thing ...even with a cable would be nice??

Perfect. I used PdaNet on my Winmo phone and now that I have the Hero, this will be great.
I just checked. PDANet on android does not tether over wifi - only over USB which the Hero can do anyway.
Is there any option avaliable for phones which are not rooted?
Like TheBrit said, you can do this if you have the usb connected. Go under settings->wireless controls then check Mobile Network Sharing.
Ozym - exactly the same thing happens on my Hero. Gave up in the end.
To All -
Unless you would like to fork over the extra $15 a month to Sprint, simply going to settings->wireless controls then checking Mobile Network Sharing, does not work. At least it doesnt work for me any longer. I've been using HTC for the past year and a half (original Touch and then Touch Pro on unlimited data plan) neither had problems using Internet Sharing, but once I got the Hero and tried using the new Mobile Network Sharing all I get is "Failure to connect, Error code 65 and 67" I even called to ask why this feature isn't allowed any longer, the only response I got was that it must have been aglitch on my other phones, and that this feature costs extra. Damn I can not wait to finaly get ROOT access to this Sprint Hero. I miss my ability to jump on the internet anywhere I go.

It works fine on my Magic and Hero. Go in to settings of wifi tether by pressing menu and enable access control and also consider applyinng afterword by pressing menu again and apply. SECONDLY YOU MMAY MAKE IT SECURE BY GOING INTO MENU AND SETTINGS WHERE YOU CAN PUT YOUR OWN PASSPHRASE ETC.
i HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU.
IMHO, the only "problem" with Wireless Tether is that it drains the battery very quickly. So quickly in fact that plugging it into the mains will not stop the battery from discharging!

all the winmobile phones can go on because they were all hacked into the cooked roms.... meaning it was opened up for you.... NORMALLY you cannot do this with ANY phone, so asking sprint or telling them that you had it back then was not such a good idea IMO.
and for the hero users now, of course they do not have it...we barely just got this phone. myself, i came from winmobile... i been with windows all my life and i loved it. but since the hero came out, i loved this phone and the android os.

Bluetooth Tether via DUN

Hi Guys,
Forgive the first post that seems to be a sore point for alot of people, but I'm wondering the following:
Is it possible to bluetooth tether via DUN so I can get 3g internet? my provider includes 3gb a month and I plan to use it. Every one of my old phones had an option to do this (even an old nokida 6120, and more recently a iphone 3gs).
I'm not keen to root just yet and am hoping there is an app that will allow it.
From some quick searching I've seen;
PDANET $30, not keen to pay for something that should be free anyway.
wifi tether: needs root
running a custom rom, requires root.
apparently there were some apps pulled from the market that allowed this to happen, but I cant find the names of them anywhere.
so, is it possible?
I've also voted on the android site for the ability to include it and searched for hours last night have have come up empty handed. Please HELP!
theres a free version of PDANET, just wont do HTTPS://
Iam using the free version of pda net aswell, works perfectly for me, it does both usb and bluetooth tether

What exactly does a ported rom mean?

Hey guys, I'm new here but I have some (nooby) questions. I'm currently using an iphone to tether my laptop using web2go from t-mobile. I got a g1 from someone and of course rooted and started tinkering with it so that I could get web2go to work on the g1.
My question mainly is if I port over say another android based os, like the droid eris os that is available, does that change the way the phone interacts with t mobile? Or would t-mobile still recognize the internal imei and not care about the os and settings? I'm mainly asking if I can port over another os onto the g1 so I can tether like I currently do.
I know there will be the people who say just buy the more expensive plans, but if I could I would. I'm tethering with these phones because I can't afford real internet!
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Tmobile will recognize the IMEI although I have used the wireless and wifi tether's both and not had a problem on Tmo.
wait you use the 9.99 web2go? What settings do you use? Because whenever I try it has trouble "finding internet connection" or whatever. although technically the internet should still be coming through right? It's just being subverted by the g1's software that requires the higher tier services?
If its rooted, just use the wireless tether app. You can find the link here and put it on your SD card. Download Linda file manager from the market and use it to install the tether apk. From there, you will change your phones 3G or Edge signal into a wifi one that your laptop can use. You can use that on any rom, and it doesn't matter wether its droid eris or stock. The only thing that tmobile can see is your imei and your radio version, not the rom.
ok I will try this tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks for all the help
well I tried it real quick right now and I guess I forgot to make clear whats going on. When using the G1 as opposed to the iphone, the web2go subscription gets subverted. So while web2go works with a proxy on the iphone, on the G1 it does nothing.
I have the tools to tether except the G1 / T-mobile subvert the internet. I wanted to know if this was based on imei or on a software lock. Because I have heard of people using their G1's with web2go I'm assuming it's a software lock. So if I use a rom of an os that can run web2go, will I be able to use it? or will the imei lock it out?

there's only really two different os versions. well, more, but two popular ones. 1.6 (donut) and 2.1 (eclair). does the g1 have a data plan? does it even have 3g? you say you just got it, so if you don't have 3g, there's nothing to tether. as for it not working - if you're rooted it will work. there's also a app on the market (for now) called easy tether. just use the free version.
edit: read top post more clearly - no. you can't tether if you don't have 3g. if you can, it's new to me.
one more edit: you can do what my friend did - take an old satellite dish, hardwire it to a router, and just connect a lot of wire clothes hangers to the satellite's receptor or.. er... thingy and steal wifi for like miles. ha ha.
The thing is web2go is a data plan that can access unlimited 3g through a proxy. T mobile wants users to use their strict g1 data plan, so any other data plans get shut off. I'm wondering if it's imei or software. If its a software lock then I can just install a different rom I'm guessing.
When I tether with the same data plan on my iphone i get edge speeds, the main reason i want to get the g1 working is so i can get the 3g speeds
Ok, then try this. Go to the tmobile.com website, sign in using your number and password (or create an account). When you get to the screen that shows you a picture of your phone, select the option right under the picture that says not my phone, then select any other 3G capable, non android device. That should put you in the clear for a few hours/days/weeks/months, or whenever they decide to check your account.
Ok I tried it but it still didn't work. I'm starting to think it might be the g1 software which is helping shut off the Internet. I'm going to install a new rom and hopefully I'll be able to set the settings for t mobile. Will keep u guys posted

Question about USB Tethering

Yea I just got the Tmo Vibrant the other day and I can't get the usb tethering to work. I tried with the pda.net app that came with the phone and had no luck at all. This is a stock phone, it hasn't been rooted or anything. Can someone please tell me what I have to do to get this to work, or point me in the right direction. I been searching for the past 2 days and came up with nothing. I know about wifi hotspot but that looses connection on me after 5min. Im looking for straight usb tethering. Appreciate it.

you're in the USA on T-mobile, when you say wi fi tethering but you aren't rooted, what program are you using? Rooting should solve this problem, it is very quick and the instructions are in the sticky thread in this forum.
then install Rom Manager (in same thread as rooting)
then follow instructions here for the Mobile AP software that samsung wrote for the galaxy S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760243
as far as I know, this is the most versatile wi-fi tethering program since it doesn't create an ad-hoc network, it is true access point. be sure to use clockwork recovery (available in the rom manager app from the market) to install it since it is a .zip not .apk
I was using the wifi hotsoot on my hd2. That phone is gone now though. It would only hold a connection for a couple of secs though. Im not too sure I want to root my phone though. What I really want to know is, does your phone have to be rooted to be able to access usb tethering.
PDA.net does work fine on your non-rooted phone. Allow the computer side of the installation install the drivers and it will install the phone side too. I used it on my Samsung Moment before I got my Vibrant also. But the rooted path is a much better solution if you want to give it a try. Always plenty of people willing to help here if you have any questions.
Thank you guys for your suggestions. I appreciate it
Do you guys use pda.net or another program. Because correct me if I'm wrong don't you have to pay for pda.net?
I use PDAnet and it is free, but for it to work, you have to install the software on the computer as well and the drivers for the phone. I love PDAnet because when you are browsing the internet on the computer and you get a text, the message will pop up on the screen of the PC and you can reply from there, no need to pick up the phone...
I use easytether. It does the job but I'm not sure if you have to be rooted. I don't think you do.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
A friend uses PDANET on his MyTouch Slide since he doesn't want to root.
I do recommend the rooted method though.
I wirelessly tethered today (home internet went down) for ~1 hour on 3G and it was almost as fast as our internet normally is. Nothing special to install on the computer & it's always ready for you just in case you need it.
You can always unroot later if you don't like it, pretty simple.
All you need is either Behold II USB driver or having Samsung Kies installed and it's 100% free, or just change USB mode to Kies and plug it to Cradlepoint CTR-500 router and you're hooked.
I rooted and used mobile AP (see post 2). This has been, for me, the easiest and most reliable solution.
I'm in the "I've rooted and am using the WiFi mobile Hotspot" application crowd. Honestly, the ability to have the phone become a mobile AP was 80% of the reason I rooted the phone.
My phone seems to continue to receive emails and txts while acting as an AP and while I' haven't tested it I wouldn't be surprised if it still received calls...
worth rooting for imho...

Calls work as well.
I will drop T-Mobile for the first carrier that has a non-locked down Android 2.2 phone with comparable specs to the Vibrant that doesn't remove the tethering app and/or charges an arm and a leg for tethering.
I think I'm going to start looking around.
Also, are these phones starting to sell more than they were before? I'm still waiting for a replacement on backorder and it still hasn't even shipped to me yet. It's been a week. Last one shipped the next day (off backorder).
If I have to use this HD2 for another week, I'm killing 8 kittens.

is there a way to tether without rooting? i read the thread and i am getting mixed responses. everyone says rooting is better but is it possible without a root?
bump, any information i search on google seems outdated
Xda search is like ten times worse.
Kies for usb tether is an easy solution free and doesn't require root access - just look for the various ways to download kies and look for the USB drivers that should be searchable.
I've been using android-wifi-tether (requires root) for wifi tether and it does a good job - might have to check out mobileAP since most seem to have good success with it.
Appreciate it

If only I had a blackberry....
Seriously though, why not take your $100 and buy an Android phone to Wifi tether with? My DInc works great for tethering with my Archos 101!
in case this doesn't work
http://www.android-hilfe.de/archos-...er-das-handy-mit-dem-tablet-ins-internet.html
it just says pair your phone with the archos, setup bluetooth tethering via DUN and enter the apn server in the archos + maybe login info (i left that emtpy since my provider doens't require it)
but if you can spare 100bucks. why dont you buy those little portable wifi hotspots.
just put in a sim card and connect it via wifi to your archos.
they are about as big as a egg.
You can email me from the site and I will help you do it. I have it working on my iPad to my Verizon Blackberry Bold. The model Blackberry and network is important to know.
Blackberry bold 9700 here! I don't mind being a test dummy for someone, just shoot me a pm.
It is a known issue that the Archos Gen 8 cannot currently tether to the Blackberry's. Tethering to Iphone and android phones seems to work in most cases but there is an issue with Blackberrys. I have a company issued Blackberry and it would be much simplier to pay the extra $15 a month for the data plan then get another phone or hot spot device and pay for and carry that around along with my Blackberry. I have a model 9000 but am due for an upgrade so I can change to a different model if need be. We utilize AT&T as the carrier. There is a developer over on ArchosFans forum who is also trying to get some other parties to chip in for him to develop this app.
Thanks
Dan
Already working on this
I have had this same offer on the archosfans forum and had been exploring getting it working on my BB 9700 before selling it. It doesn't matter what network it is on. There are things missing in the config for Archos because of the difference in the way carriers set up in Europe as opposed to the US. I was most of the way there. I'm looking for $300 to do it and have $100 already. It also gives me some people to test the code.
PM me if interested.
so to sum it all up blackberries can't tether to android at the moment correct?
Has anyone tried using PdaNet on their blackberry?
my dad would appreciate this. luckily my hd2 with froyo tethers just fine

Why do I bother? Yes. It doesn't freaking work! When I do get a few more things out of the way I will surely be asking myself if this is actually more than an idle curiosity for people. Before I dumped my 9700 I tried every possible option which includes several available programs. Anything on BlackBerry App world and anything I could google. No joy! Read my post again. I know it can be made to work with 100% certainty.
PDAnet is $50. Apparently an actual developer willing to make it work isn't worth a PM or a cent. I'm really starting to wonder if it is worth my time.
but you can use the demo of pdanet for blackberry right? You hit enable yada yada yada paired it and it still didn't work over pdanet's bluetooth DUN?
Ide try but I'm waiting for someone to find a solution for one of these tablets so then i'll buy one
"but you can use the demo of pdanet for blackberry right? You hit enable yada yada yada paired it and it still didn't work over pdanet's bluetooth DUN?"
Just so everyone knows. There is currently no way to tether the blackberry to the Archos, none, nada no matter what software you try to use. That is why we need a programmer to write the code. We have one willing to do this (Sequiter) if people will PM him and let him know they will pay for it.
CDMA tether working on verizon . I rooted my archos 32 then i used some of the info from this site http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=18053 I got my phone to connect and i was online .. It's a bit of a pain and it will only work in root . I am hoping now that this info works and connects someone can make a small program that will make it easy to do ... My bb connected 1st show .. My wifes e815 that i keep around for FREE internet connected but drops after 30 secs I think there needs to be a username @vzw3g.com and password when tether to the e815 . I am looking into how to add this in the chat part now
Hope this helps .. I will be up all night geting 100% working ..
If you like to root your device I used this setup .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880321
Also it makes it easy to copy of the tether stuff using ADB !
opps !! when in rooted dev side .. after you reboot it removes the files ... So I gess i will need to make something that will copy the 3 files each time i need to tether .. e815 to work also just added user [email protected] and password vzw
I will have more info soon on it ..
Thanks
Folks,
I have a BB Tour and I might have that $100 solution today. I am waiting on a device today that should allow me to turn my BB into a wifi hotspot. It is very small/portable. It is from Cradlepoint and called the PHS300 personal wifi hotspot.
I will report back today if I get it to work!
As for why not get a new phone? I plan on it, but want to wait for new Android 4gLTE phones to hit the market, which are a few months away.
Folks,
I have a US Verizon Wireless Blackberry Tour 9630 that tethered with my A70 via Bluetooth right out of the box, and continues to do so reliably. I understand that there are many issues with tethering BB's with the Gen8's, but I just wanted to inject some facts here. It's not *all* Blackberrys.
There have been many threads over on archosfans.com forums about this issue. Hopefully, if Archos is paying any attention at all, they'll recognize that this is one of the top complaints that they're getting and address it with the next firmware release. I feel like I got really lucky that mine works. If it hadn't, I'd have put the A70 right back in the box and sent it back where I got it from.
Cradlepoint also works great I have the 350 ... And you can run the Cradlepoint off 4 AA batts with a Easy DIY plug and battery case .. It says it gets 3 - 3 1/2 hours .. I ran mine on batts today for the 1st time watched some videos and lite web .. It will still working after an hour or more ..
I tested it with 3 phones
e815
vx6800
BB
all work great ..
But i can also tether BT over command line Term .. But it is a pain in the A## to redo copy the files and stuff eatch time .. I kind of like the Cradlepoint better as you can connect upto 6 ofther wifi devices at the same time ..
CompFreek,
Thanks for confirming it will work. Other than liking to tweek now and again, I am more about ease than anything else. I am stoked about getting it. I was bummed when I received my package from Amazon on Monday and they sent me the wrong item. I will have the real deal tomorrow.
Would still like to know how you manage to do it via blue tooth method. What thread has the deets or can you walk me through it?
Thanks bud!
Post #14 on this page will get you started VIA BT .. It works good just a real pain i need to make some kind of auto copy .. this way when you reboot it will recopy the 3 files need for BT to work on CDMA .. As root !! I am still trying to put something better to gether for that setup .. I have an programer working on a small program for DUN /CDMA now that I know it works . I wish I knew a way to export the software out of the nokia 810 to android it has the best setup for tether and a great wizard for the setup to any network I tested so meny wireless CO on the n810 and that all work great ..
You will still love the Cradlepoint it's nice to have .. I tether my laptop and android a32 at the same time it's great ..
Blutooth Tethering Android Client.
The problem with the craddlepoint is to have to carry an extra thing with you....I've used the Aluratek ...and it was great...but straight connection would be nice.
People have had succes with CDMA versions of BB but just not GSM Version.
Computerfreek, would GSM version work with your method?
Also, I'm asking people who have the know how ...to conisider creatin a bluetooth Tethering Android client. The equivalent of the Archos Builtin client....that would work on not just Archos but also gtab and other tablets lacking this BT Tethering feature...
I would try a lot of these tablets if I knew I can BT Tether them to my phone.
The client would also just make BB Tethering possible....
A smart guy from China wrote the ibluever app to tether iphone, ipad, ipod touch to any other phone. His first version did not have BB support. His second version does have BB support and people have been using it like crazy. Well Android lack such client. PdaNet is not the equivalent ...I wrote them to try to get them to write something similar but got only a standard response from the support person. What we need is Client to sit on Android device like, the archos BT Tethering routine. Ibluever has been selling...and I believe if someone write this for Android..not just Archos only, he will sell it well...very well...and at the same time help the Android fans.
