APN setting?. I'm down in Puerto Rico with a company called Centennial and I don't any idea what my APN setting are and the APN view in setting is disabled. I try every way to rooted with no luck. My firmware version is "1.63.556.1" I'm planning to use the Goldcard procedure to update. Thanks in advance.
Your prl should have that information soo
Doing that should just change your software, which would be 1.5 to 2.1 without changing your apn.
Also you can update your profile and prl once in 2.1 if everything goes right that should fix it, if changed.
Also have you seen the guide for non sprint phones?
Is Centennial even CDMA? From the looks of the wikipedia page, it's a subsidiary of at&t in puerto rico

Yeah, basically I'm saying that this guy has the wrong forum and is going to NOT have a very fun time flashing anything in this forum.

My bad, I wasn't sure, so that's why I phrased my initial post as a question. Thanks for clearing it up.
After reading and googling Centennial and cdma htc hero.
I think if he were to have the htc hero, he would be using gsm. I cant find anything that has to do with cdma htc hero on Centennial. But numerous sites take me to the GSM hero that say compatible services Centennial. Like this one.
http://www.cellhut.com/HTC-Hero-Goo...ed-QuadBand-Touchscreen-WiFi-Phone-15971.html
When you go to Centennial.com and type a puerto rico address, it takes you to att.com. If you try to find a store and tpye in a puerto rico address all the stores are att.
And reading att's website about upgrading your phone..
I think you can upgrade your plan with a newer phone, on att's original gsm network.

I feel like an idiot...I just assumed since it was GSM in Louisiana it was that way for their other locations.
I just found the Hero he's talking about...it is definitely a CDMA Hero:

They call it HTC Android...but it's definitely an HTC Hero CDMA.

FINALLY
hey, hadn't worked up the nerve to ask for help rooting my CDMA HTC Hero from Centennial in Puerto Rico... there's so much info to go through!
So yea, what do you guys suggest I do at this point? Should I wait for an OTA update from my small-ish provider? If I wanted to go ahead and root, should I try markachee's Goldcard rooting tech?
Thanks a lot, you guys so amazing things here!
Got any more info on this? Got a Friend that want to go to 2.1 with Centennial, but has no idea con what to do.
Hey, fellow centennial HTC Hero user here. I like my phone so far, but I was promised by centennial that they would fix the MMS issue with a "manufacturer update" which i guessed would be android 2.1 Eclair. Since yesterday I've called customer service a couple of times and the people in that country (not PR) tell me that I should do that myself...surprising...
oh yeah and I tried updating with the Sprint installer, and it stops when it detects it obviously isn't a Sprint phone.
EDIT: Just talked to a customer service representative from PR and said that when the update arrives (no date) it will be available from their website.
Backup/restore or Manual programming? Non-Sprint Rom issues, *288 not working!

I did it, but honestly I am not an expert on this and I am still struggling with some issues. A good place to start is to know what information we need to backup just in case Sprint based Roms brake phone programming. I know PRL is one of those and you can back it up with QSPT Configuration app.
Beware... some post suggest to clear DSA Server URL, do a *228, and that’s all!, but it will not work after the initial/first *228 setup from Centennial even on untouched phones, so programming will need to be manually, I think… or convince them to re-enable on the air programming for the unit... and, well that is where my problems are..
Did anyone know about how to backup and restore ALL those settings that can cause problems? i.e. PRI, PRL, SID, etc.... and of course, what to do if you didn't backup and now need to make sure you have the right setting...
UPDATE: decided to try upgrading from another provider in PR which offers the cdma hero (name does not start with a T or an S ) and a rep said their update required a phone # input (which there wasn't). Just followed instructions on the installer's attached readme and used a contact, sms, calendar, etc backup app from the market before update. Updated smoothly, reinstalled backup app and restored my contacts, etc.
Finally Bluetooth file sharing is possible amongst other nice 2.1 features!!!

I love my mogul...is there anyway to hack the phone so that I can get it hooked up with another network?
Good for you.
Sorry. There is no way to bring the sprint mogul to the Verizon network.
You will need a new xv6800. Much better phone anyway if you ask me.
why not? verizon opened their network to all devices, he should be able to activate it with them
It should be possible – for instance I operate Sprint Mogul in our local network. I even know people here who programmed HTC devices to have phone services from one network and the data (i.e. Internet) – from another.

The most difficult thing would be to get Verizon to activate your ESN on their network. Verizon has announced that they will allow all approved devices, but that has not yet been implemented. You might be lucky enough to find a CS rep willing to do it.
After that, you would need to flash a Verizon ROM, get an A-key and MSID from Verizon, and either port your phone number to Verizon or get a new MDN. You would need to edit EPST to reflect these numbers.
After all that is done, dial *22801 on the device to set up the data parameters, followed by *22802 to load a Verizon PRL.
If I missed anything, or misstated any of the above, I am sure someone will chime in with a correction.
Actually... Verizon has opened their networks up, as of the 18th of February I believe. I could be wrong about the date, but I know its opened.
You can flash a verizon ROM onto your 6800, then call customer service and activate your phone. It should work that way, its what I did for a friend who switched from Verizon to Sprint for the cheaper data plan...

for those who may be interested...it is possible to have your hero flashed to work on the Cricket network. it may not be for everyone, but i couldn't resist the lure of $40/mo unlimited everything with no contract. (saves around $1,000+ over the life of the contract)
here's what i did:
-buy cdma hero on ebay
-go to a cricket store and ask them to activate the phone
-usually the rep will "know a guy" who can work with htc (try a few stores or call around)
-they may charge you $30 or so to flash it and its working
wireless data, visual voicemail, and mms dont' work...but they expect to get them working soon (phone is only a few weeks old at this point)... and where i'm at, i almost always have wifi and don't care about vm or mms.
Might see if any of these guys know about xda...perhaps they just need to be pointed here to share the wealth of what they're doing.
HTC Hero Phone Code Numbers ##
if you do transfer to cricket (or perhaps another cdma carrier), a good thing to know is:
##000000#
this will allow you to edit or view EPST (change/view your Mobile Directory Number MDN and MSID)
The MDN is your current phone number, your local cricket store can give you your MSID (which also depends on your phone number).

The radio is separate from the OS and the traditional CDMA tools work on the Hero like any other phone. There are plenty of other forums talking about how to port CDMA phones to other providers; especially Indian forums because there are large CDMA networks there.
Edit: when he says "flash it," he probably just means to put a new PRL (preferred roaming list) and editing the details under ##DATA to match what another provider wants.

"Broadband Workaround Trick"
Hey guys!
I'm new to the Hero (CDMA Sprint flashed to Cricket) and Android. Totally new. I'm no stranger to Windows Mobile though, I've been a pretty intense user and contributor to development on the Axim x51v. Thought it was time to update though, and here I am.
Now, I've googled my butt off (which is going to make it tough to poop later, for sure), and I just can't find much detail or step by step info on how to get internet access working on this thing other than Wifi.
I have phone/text, and I also bought a Cricket Broadband plan to go along with it.
My phone is not rooted, not unlocked, unless this was part of what they did at the Cricket store to get my Hero flashed to Cricket.
I've read some mentions in google searches about a way to use my Broadband service through my phone... but I need some step by step info on how to do this. Can anyone help? What would be handy, as a somewhat savvy noob, would be prerequisites, instructions, and info I'll need to do this.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help, and I apologize in advance if I didn't google well enough before asking... although I definitely gave it a damn good shot before asking for help!
I've never tried it, so i don't know, but i have flashed a lot of WM phones to cricket with working mms and WAP. I would think you could get the internet to work by entering first changing your msl to 000000 and then just entering in all the correct settings in your EPST like you would a windows mobile phone?
cricket wap on hero
the phone has built in proxy support so u can download anycut from the market and input "wap.mycricket.com" and "8080" in the proxy settings. however most of the internet apps dont work, but the browser does. i believe the broadband hack or possibly the html plan will help in getting the internet apps to work but havent tried yet
htc hero wap no working
.i have a sprint htc hero that had cellular south on it now its flashed to cricket.the only thing working is calling.can you walk me through getting internet.i belive my wap setting are set up,but when i try and connect to mobile network it says "standbye for connecting to mobile network then connecting and keeps repeating"i have read that iv got to root the phone.iv been trying to root with no success.and hepl please .ty
htc hero cricket
please help dont want to try anything till im shure .lol
its actually possible. my friend works for cricket and got a sprint branded touch pro working. he just has voice and mms. but its a start i guess. i needs my data lol.
so why would you want a hero that only half the features work on?
i have an htc hero...i live in laredo tx..if anyone knows how i can flash this cell phone to cricket please let me know..they have told me that they dont have the software to do so..please HELP ME!!! *TeAr* and where did u guyz flash it so i can go overthere if i cant do to here....

Does anybody here have a HTC Hero on the Crickt Network. I can't seem to get it working. I live in Philadelphia. I've tried every Cricket PRL on the Colordo(If I Speeled it right) site and i get nothing. My phone wont even dial out. I did everything the guide said. I unlocked the phone and added the PRL and I get nothin. It has to be something more that i have to do. I can't even find a place in philly that does it. THNKyOU
we need the whole story here...
is it a sprint hero?
which PRL specifically are you using? try looking at a friends phone who has cricket in the same area (is usually listed under phone info>prl) and use the same one
when you say unlocked what do you mean? spc changed?
does your phone *228? does it 611? is philly an AWS market? (i dont know)
is the device actually on an account?
there are good threads out there.. work your google-fu if any of these terms or ideas are foreign to you (dont be afraid to try the google cache if a certain site is down too.. m-f?)
I Have a Sprint Hero. and i have tried every cricket PRL. I have a active Cricket phone and I also checked the info on that phone and i can't find the PRL that my cricket phone has. No *228 does not work or 611. When i dial out it does nothing. and I mean unlocked by changing the SPC to 000000
if you cant 611 or *228 im inclined to think you didn't get the prl properly working
on the hero you can ##786# to check the current prl
once you have the right prl and can 611 then get your phone activated and program... really not any different than any other cdma
really search though. theres threads that cover the whole process already
edit: try asking in a local cricket store if you are in an AWS market, theres a chance your phone might not work with philly/cricket
I had to switch from TMobile to At&t for work reasons. I got the Samsung Focus on At&t and I love it, but I flashed Android on my HD2 hoping that I would have the best of both worlds: a WP7 and an Android phone equivalent to the Inspire 4G.
The good news is that when I put my At&t SIM Card on my HD2, it registers and says At&t, and the data works fine (EDGE, but nothing is perfect, i knew that 3G was not going to work because of the different frequencies At&t and TMobile use), the bad news is that I'm not able to make or receive calls or texts.
Anyone has any idea how to make the HD2 with Android work on At&T?
Please ignore the part of my sig where it says that i'm running windows mobile, although i'm willing to flash it if that is the solution, but i want to play with Android for a while.
Any help will be appreciated!
Cheers!
You will have to unlock the phone. Call T_Mobile and they can generate a unlock code for you.
My phone is unlocked... any other ideas?
Did you go to Settings/Mobile Networks/Network Operators/Search Networks and choose AT&T as your carrier? In the same menu, you can Select Automatically so that you don't have to manually choose which carrier is available in your area.
AT&T is the only carrier that shows up whether i select it manually or automatically.

That's strange. Seeing your moniker and knowing you were on T-Mobile, it should also show up. Since your phone is unlocked like mine, I used to be on AT&T and would see both carriers when I did a search of the airwaves. Did you check your APN settings so that they are set up for AT&T?

Brazil
I bought an unlocked ATT V20 H910m last year and bought it to Brazil, it's working fine but, as we don't have ATT here I cannot update it.
Do you know if I flash this H915 rom I will be able to use another carrier here and receive OTA updates?
Thanks
Another option (if the flashed firmware doesn't seem to help) is to use the EXT roaming option. It's a no cost (to Canadian cell users with one of the big three) option, all you have to do is manually select the network operator using one of the EXT providers that will show up besides the FIDO ones. I run the H990DS model and I'm over on the west coast of BC. Over the years the Rogers (who Fido actually is) cell tower signal has degraded so bad that it's practically unusable. So I just went to permanently roaming on Telus towers using EXT. Never had any financial repercussions from Fido on my bill and the Telus signal is very good. The EXT roaming is a mutual aid thing that Telus, Rogers and Bell came up with and implemented not that long ago (year or so ago).

I tried to do that but when I go into the network settings and I click on search networks I get Error while searching for networks
Mine does that once in a blue moon.
Either reboot it or turn it off and do a cold boot.
Do not try right away after booting has been completed, give it a few minutes to settle in. I have found that trying to scan right away after a boot is where what you experienced will happen, also once in a blue moon if the current network has issues (or it could just be the LG V20 itself) the signal drops out and a rescan doesn't work. I must say that this is a very infrequent occurrence (months+?).
Once you know how to deal with the idiosyncrasies of using the Fido-EXT it sure has worked great for me.
Out West (BC) I always get multiple Fido-EXT networks (see screenshot).
In my case one of the EXT networks is Telus and the other is BELL. It will only hook up with Telus not Bell, however out East it might be the other way around YMMV (your mileage may vary). No way to tell whose is who, just know to try the other one if the first doesn't work. AFAIK the order will stay the same after a reboot or cold start, so if it is a certain one in the list that works then it should be the same every time.
The odd time I switch back to Fido for awhile then go back to Fido-EXT, I can usually do this on the fly without having issues either way but if it doesn't co-operate a reboot or cold start takes care of it.
Hope that this helps you get it sorted out.

I don't even see that on my H910. I think AT&T restricts too much stuff on the phone. I even tried to enter the Telus APN manually and it doesn't work. I tried to enter the Telus APN settings in my /system/etc/apns-conf.xml and it didn't work.
The only other thing I can think of is (it might be stupid) do you have "roaming" enabled. If not I can see how that might affect things.
Also have you ever used the "hidden menu" from the dialer to explore?
In my case it's *#546368#*990# but you would substitute 910 for the 990.
You can make changes to the APN from there (and other things) , there's a few posts here on XDA about it.
Finally I also came across this app called "Settings Database Editor" that you can d/l from the Play Store.
I found here on XDA were someone used it to get tethering functioning properly, it lets you do a few things. All of the above work with stock phones - root not required. All these were found in the LG V20 forums.
Just kind of pulling straws for you on the hope that something might be of use.

That could be an idea. I'll try that. Thank you.
I too have the HR1010r AT&T V20 and live in Montenegro (Europe). I would like to flash the Canadian Oreo via the Flash Tool but want to make sure that I can say Bell, Rogers etc., and will it work? I don't care if I can get OTA updates, I just want to get Oreo! Lol
Thanks guys!
