Nexus 4 buzzing earpiece, no fault found - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I got my phone from o2 and the first phone I got had the buzzing earpiece problem.
I took it to the shop and they replaced it with a new one right there.
Couple weeks later I started noticing the annoying buzzing again, so I took it back and said they can't replace it but have to send it in for repair.
The verdict came back that there was no fault, when there clearly is cause making phone calls is nearly unbearable in quiet environments.
Now I want to know if I can go straight to LG to get an RMA even though I bought it from o2? What's the best way to get my phone fixed!!!
Many thanks :good:
(Can someone edit the title of my post so it has [UK] in the title?)

Anyone got any idea?

If o2 won't replace your phone then you will need to contact lg and send your phone in for repair. I would like to say that I have gone through three nexus 4's and each one had the ear piece buzzing all replaced for other reasons (yellow hue), so it is likely that your next device will be the same or worse.
Sent from my Nexus 4

So even if I bought it from o2 I can still go to LG? Will that service cost me? It's within warranty still.

Argh! My touchscreen just went dead

MFer. Grrrrrrr.
what were you doing with it at the time. Were you trying to overclock and just passed the limit. it could be some water damage...been taking a bath wit ur phone????. Or you might just get lucky and it could be that the connector for the flex cable has become lose. If you are comfortable with opening electronics I'd suggest downloading the Herald service manual (do a search if you can't find it i'll send you one) and checking out the status of the flex cable. The flex cable can be cut or moved without even opening the phone...all it would take is something like a thin card to slide in bewteen the screen and the keyboard to cause this.
Hope that provides some insight...
Don't give up...it is cheaper to repair the phone than to buy a new one.....unless you were looking for an excuse to get Tytn II
Before you open it and void your warranty, make sure theres NOTHING else you can do about the problem. For example if you have insurance, USE it first, dont try opening it. In the event you mess it up even more opening it, you're DEFINITELY f***ed because you voided the warranty opening it.
I had a touchscreen go dead on one of my Wings.
What happened was, the speaker started giving out, and then all of a sudden the touchscreen died.
I concluded that some moisted go into the phone, thru the earpiece speaker, and mess it up.

I remember you posting that u recieved a replacement too?? How did u manage to pull that one off. Working at Rogers even if there was a hint of water damage we would deny the repair saying it'll b cheaper to get a new phone...o how we used to rip ppl off...
Well, the way it got "water damaged" .. was bc I was holding the Wing and a Dasani water bottle in the same hand when I was getting into my car. When I was on the road, I went to use my phone, and the earpiece sounded weird... the sound was all the way up, but it sounded really low and distorted... I also noticed some moisture around earpiece from the condensation off of the bottle.
Again, this is me assuming that's what happened, but the evidence points in that directions, since I had been using my phone all along, because I had been on it because I was about to go out clubbing and what not, so I had made repeated phone calls until I was in my car... plus I noticed the moisture because I remember wiping it off as I went to use the phone.
So It wasn't water damaged to the point where it got submerged, but a little while later, the touchscreen went dead as well... so I'm assuming what happened was, water got into the device thru the the earpiece and that caused a problem with the wiring or something.
As far as the replacement, I just went into the TMO store, and *****ed and complained and told them it was ridiculous that the phone quite working after having it just 3 weeks. Luckily I had my receipts and everything saved. They have a 14 day exchange period, but I've also been with Tmo forever. I originally had Powertel a decade ago, then Voicestream bought Powertel, then Tmobile bought Voicestream...
I've been "loyal" for a very long time, not to mention every single phone on the account (6 lines) is one of their expensive one ...either Wings, Blackberries, etc... not the cheap free phone they offer with their cheapest plan... and I think I have every right to expect good customer service from them.
Well I'm glad that they replaced your phone, being a customer for that long they should have just gave it to you free in the first place. But I refuse to believe that a little condensation caused this because of past exp. My friend dropped PPC6700 i sold him in the toilet and it still worked after.
PS:I hope you weren't talking and driving at the same time, bad things happen when you mix the two as shown in this example.
wow. I definitely need to get hands-free setup in my car!
Maybe he tried to install the tochflo .cab...
A member of my team at work had her wing touch screen go out too. She got a brand new one free with the phone warranty. I guess I gotta look out for my wings well-being.

Yeeargh! And T-Mobile tells me I gotta contact HTC directly because I didn't buy directly from them. HTC on the other hand tells me to send it in, they will "determine if it's a warranty issue", whether they feel like repairing it or sending me a replacement, for free or for an unknown charge, and in any case there will be a $28 assessment charge on my credit card should I be unhappy with their decision.

gutted, scratched a faulty hd2 that i planned to send back,

Has anybody had experience removing a screen scratch from their hd2?
i've only had mine for 5 days and its got a massive scratch on the screen, don't even know how it happened, i always keep my phones in a glasses baggy, my iphone is still mint after 18 months but today i was watching some youtube clips on my break and the screen was perfect, then put it on charge at work and when i came back to it it was really badly scratched, not sure if someone decided to have a look at it and dropped it while i wasn't there but needless to say i'm gutted, i was thinking of sending it back to o2 coz it has a few problems, random letters on typing and stuck messages, not sure if they'll accept it back even as faulty with this big scratch, any advice as to what o2 do with faulty phones? do they check them, bin them or fix them? it was bought over the phone btw, will they just write it off and send a new one because of the problems?
please help
I think you will struggle to get it replaced under warranty with a fat scratch, even if it didn't work at all, let alone a few issues that are (apparently) solved by updates.
Do you have any cctv at work? I'd be spitting mad and hunting for the culprit!
there is cctv but not in my department, and lots of people come in and out,
worst case scenario if o2 won't accept it back as faulty they'll just send it back as it is,
and if i'm lucky i'll get a replacement?
just been giving the screen a rub with some t cut and it seems to be helping with most of the scratch, there is just a 5 mm part that is deeper than the rest, do you think that would affect an exchange?
Maybe, you`ve got nothing to lose.....
Gotta be worth a try. Chances are they're only going to flash a new rom and ship it back anyway. Course, if you have insurance it COULD go missing....
insurance is what my work mate said, any recomendations for someone cheap but with full cover?
Just for the record, the random letters on typing and stuck messages thing probably won't be enough to get you a new device. These flaws are all over the place. HTC will tell you the 1.66 rom will solve those problems. And the 'not quite aligned screen' is also a thing that pops up here on a regular basis.
Hope you succeed.
Hello guys, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I have a very similar problem except without the scratched screen. The details are over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627374
Basically, I sent it to HTC and it came back much worse than it was when I sent it to them. What can I do now? Send it back to HTC again or would O2 be better? Is there a way I can get a new phone?
Thx.
If you return it to O2, they'll courier out a new one and pick the "faulty" one up at the same time, so you would get a new phone straight away - they did this with my first HD2 which didn't recognise SIM cards.
What they do with the "faulty" one once it's couriered back is anyone's guess. You could be lucky and it just goes in a big faulty pile to be sent back to HTC. I would deny that it was scratched if they phone you up about it, but that's quite naughty.
Awesome, thanks elyl .
My phone isn't scratched in the first place. Hope it works out for the original poster too.

what department at o2 did you use to get a courier exchange , what did you ask for and what problem did your phone have so that they exchanged it, cheers
sometimes the couriers themselves check out the goods if you are returning faulty handsets that have supposedly have no physical damage. ive had this happen to me a few times with my business units.
i would send it back to O2 anyway... if you have only had the handset for five days, explain that the screen is not "perfect". Its all about how you word it on the return form. Put down your other issues also.
This way when the courier turns up with your new handset and checks the goods and the return form (IF he has one) he will have no choice but to oblige.

Before I divulge this story I don't endorse this sort of thing.
My mate got the HD2 on an upgrade through O2, he sat on it within 24hrs and got a smudge on the screen, called them up and claimed there was a fault with the screen; which they then sent a brand new replacement. This promptly arrived and then by shear idiocy he managed to put it the through the washing machine the next day!
The device turns on but the back light has shorted, so you can see the GUI but only under strong light and it is basically unreadable. He will get insurance via O2 then claim next month saying he lost it. However the insurance does cost 10 pound a month; but still cheaper than 500...

Am I the only one who finds the people who break their phones and then try to weasel their way into a new, free handset annoying as hell?
My local HTC center used to offer courier exhanges for all HTC products, but not anymore. I called 'em up the other day to get my phone exchanged and they told me they no longer do it because people were abusing the service.

no... you are not the only one who finds unscrupulous antics extremely irritating.
however,... some of the stories i hear are so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh.
the irony of it is, that when i ordered the phone it went through ok and the money came off my card, then i got a text a few hours after the order, saying they were out of stock, i rang a few days later to see when they expected fresh stock and the girl i spoke to re ordered it for me, 2 days later 2 phones arrived at my house delivered as one shipment, i could have sold one phone but being honest i rang o2 and explained they'd made a mistake, i sent one phone back the next morning,
my phone also has the landscape/portrait problems in internet explorer and calender apps, where if i open in portrait and switch to landscape the screen flicks back and forth fast until i pull the battery, i planned to send it for an exchange anyway as my mate who has one at work has none of my phones problems, its just my luck it got scratched

My Epic's speaker died

I was on Quantum ROM and all of a sudden any ring tone/music/video etc that used the speaker would result in no sound unless the volume was full which at full volume would just be hissy static. So I did a hard reset and same thing. I tried a different ROM and same thing. I am now flashing back to stock and removing root and taking it in to a repair store tomorrow.
Wonder what caused this.

I had a speaker go out on my old blackberry curve 8330, they replaced it in the store.
So they are sending you some refurbished Epic, no telling who returned it for what reason.

Yeah, the corporate repair store here NEVER replaces phones with new ones (at least in my experience).
Also, I wasn't within my 30 days, I've had the phone since September and yes I have TEP insurance.
It's really odd, it makes no sound when the volume is at 70% or less. Anything above that is mostly static.
They looked at the phone for literally 2 minutes and said "yeah, we can't fix this. We'll have to order a replacement."

Sorry, I meant to say that they replaced the speaker in the store. I have had the store replace the screen and speaker, they did it in 30 min while I waited. So they must have field replaceable parts for those phones. I'm just curious that they don't have the same field replaceable parts for the EPIC. It seems silly to get a different phone for a simple speaker replacement. I'm also not sure how I would feel about getting a used EPIC for just a speaker problem.. Not that I would want to live with a speaker problem.. I would just look into taking the speaker from the replacement unit and swapping them if it is easy enough. The thing is they send you that phone for a reason, someone else turned in that phone for a reason, you do not want to inherent someones old issues.
Dont forget to take your memory card if you choose to send back your old phone, I'm not sure if your replacement will come with one or not, or if the ins company checks.
My Epic was stock i had it since October, and my speaker died last week it had a annoying tinny noise... I went to the Sprint repair store and they ordered a replacement speaker so I got it replaced at the store on monday now its like back to normal Took like 10 mins if even. i had insurance too.
When the last time u known sprint to actually repair a phone?

[Q] Dismantle the MT4G, how?

I'm on my third MT4G, and the home button is making a creaking noise now. I'm past that 14-day exchange deal so I know I can't replace the phone, but seriously the QC process of the phone AND case is total crap since I had another one that had creaking with the back button.
Has anyone taken their phone apart in an attempt of making the creaking sounds go away?
You can still call Tmobile. and they will send you a replacement phone.. for free.. you would just need to send your current one back after you get the new one.
Yeah, but the chances of that phone being brand new are extremely slim. I have a friend who did several exchanges of his MT3G last year, and every one he received was a refurb. I could call and see what they say, because I'm certain I wouldn't be able to exchange it at the T-Mobile store where I bought it, since it is my third phone.
The whole thing still upsets me since it was so much money.
its probably hard to get a refurb phone right now since it just came out, i guess its just luck. so far mine have not had any noises but my power button is getting hard to press down

[Q] Buzzing, possibly blown earpiece speaker

I've had my RAZR M for about 2 months now, so far, its been a fantastic phone!
Over the past few weeks, the earpiece speaker quality has been degrading, up to the point now where its got a severe buzz to it, almost like the speaker is blown. I have to turn the volume down when making calls just to hear the person on the other end clearly without distortion.
Anyone else have this problem? Is the speaker available anywhere as a replacement item? I'd rather not go through the hassle of getting it repaired/replaced by Verizon (I hear they give refurbished phones as replacements, right?).
Thanks!
Sorry I didn't see this post before,
Yes I have the same issue, exactly!
Been meaning to take it in to have it looked at but haven't yet, have you done anything about it yet?
I used to be able to tap the back of the phone with my hand to get it cleared up but even that isn't working any more.
Ha ha... I had this same issue on a straight out the box M... which also made me get a replacement which also got me root and an unlocked boot loader... I knew I wasn't unmoral and had some values................
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
Mine got so bad last week that I took it back to Verizon.... Told the rep what the problem was and he just put in the order for replacement..... Never even cared to listen to it. I know it's a reconditioned one but it only has to get me to October for my upgrade.
