MFer. Grrrrrrr.
what were you doing with it at the time. Were you trying to overclock and just passed the limit. it could be some water damage...been taking a bath wit ur phone????. Or you might just get lucky and it could be that the connector for the flex cable has become lose. If you are comfortable with opening electronics I'd suggest downloading the Herald service manual (do a search if you can't find it i'll send you one) and checking out the status of the flex cable. The flex cable can be cut or moved without even opening the phone...all it would take is something like a thin card to slide in bewteen the screen and the keyboard to cause this.
Hope that provides some insight...
Don't give up...it is cheaper to repair the phone than to buy a new one.....unless you were looking for an excuse to get Tytn II
Before you open it and void your warranty, make sure theres NOTHING else you can do about the problem. For example if you have insurance, USE it first, dont try opening it. In the event you mess it up even more opening it, you're DEFINITELY f***ed because you voided the warranty opening it.
I had a touchscreen go dead on one of my Wings.
What happened was, the speaker started giving out, and then all of a sudden the touchscreen died.
I concluded that some moisted go into the phone, thru the earpiece speaker, and mess it up.

I remember you posting that u recieved a replacement too?? How did u manage to pull that one off. Working at Rogers even if there was a hint of water damage we would deny the repair saying it'll b cheaper to get a new phone...o how we used to rip ppl off...
Well, the way it got "water damaged" .. was bc I was holding the Wing and a Dasani water bottle in the same hand when I was getting into my car. When I was on the road, I went to use my phone, and the earpiece sounded weird... the sound was all the way up, but it sounded really low and distorted... I also noticed some moisture around earpiece from the condensation off of the bottle.
Again, this is me assuming that's what happened, but the evidence points in that directions, since I had been using my phone all along, because I had been on it because I was about to go out clubbing and what not, so I had made repeated phone calls until I was in my car... plus I noticed the moisture because I remember wiping it off as I went to use the phone.
So It wasn't water damaged to the point where it got submerged, but a little while later, the touchscreen went dead as well... so I'm assuming what happened was, water got into the device thru the the earpiece and that caused a problem with the wiring or something.
As far as the replacement, I just went into the TMO store, and *****ed and complained and told them it was ridiculous that the phone quite working after having it just 3 weeks. Luckily I had my receipts and everything saved. They have a 14 day exchange period, but I've also been with Tmo forever. I originally had Powertel a decade ago, then Voicestream bought Powertel, then Tmobile bought Voicestream...
I've been "loyal" for a very long time, not to mention every single phone on the account (6 lines) is one of their expensive one ...either Wings, Blackberries, etc... not the cheap free phone they offer with their cheapest plan... and I think I have every right to expect good customer service from them.
Well I'm glad that they replaced your phone, being a customer for that long they should have just gave it to you free in the first place. But I refuse to believe that a little condensation caused this because of past exp. My friend dropped PPC6700 i sold him in the toilet and it still worked after.
PS:I hope you weren't talking and driving at the same time, bad things happen when you mix the two as shown in this example.
wow. I definitely need to get hands-free setup in my car!
Maybe he tried to install the tochflo .cab...
A member of my team at work had her wing touch screen go out too. She got a brand new one free with the phone warranty. I guess I gotta look out for my wings well-being.

Yeeargh! And T-Mobile tells me I gotta contact HTC directly because I didn't buy directly from them. HTC on the other hand tells me to send it in, they will "determine if it's a warranty issue", whether they feel like repairing it or sending me a replacement, for free or for an unknown charge, and in any case there will be a $28 assessment charge on my credit card should I be unhappy with their decision.

hi guys. i have a cingular 8525 that ive had for probably about a year now. i think im slightly over the warranty but i may be just under it. not sure.
my 8525 has been giving me TONS of problems recently (probably right after the warranty was over, if it is lol) which is just my luck.
i got the red light several times. often times it refuses to charge anymore. and now since yesterday the speaker on the phone stops working randomly.
not just the loudspeaker but the speaker in the handset itself as well, so basically all sound stops, and no its not muted.
anyways i went into a radioshack store and noticed one of the guys working there had the new tilt. he said he got it by returning his 8525 under warranty and they gave him a new one, the tilt.
now, obviously getting a free tilt would be awesome, but at this point id be just as happy if they still replace my current phone. i would like the tilt though lol. anyways, here is the problem.
a few months ago, a friend of mine dropped my phone. the loudspeaker stopped working, and hence no sound was working on my phone. so i opened up the phone and found out that the plug had simply come undone. i found that out from this site. so obviously now my phone is out of warranty it no longer has the void sticker.
does anyone have any help or tips to help? im seriously considering trying to find some sort of void sticker to replace it. but i doubt that would work. would htc take the phone anyway? i dont know. id be afraid to get charged for another phone cuz i have no money right now because of college books etc.
any help as soon as possible would be MUCH appreciated, because i think my warranty is up any day if it isnt already.
thanks guys.
im guessing no one has a reply on this?
It sounds like you're out of luck man. I say it's one thing to upgrade or modify software on a phone, etc, because you can easily restore it before returning it, but it sounds like you're looking for methods to deceive the phone company. That's not cool. So that you don't put yourself in a situation of getting charged like $500 for returning a crapped out phone, look for a used one or something? Some of the things that they look for upon processing a returned phone is the VOID sticker, battery connectors, and any apparent physical damage caused by drops, etc. Don't do it! I'm sure you have several phones sitting around that you can pop your SIM card into to get you by?
well hey im not trying to deceive them in a bad way. so dont get me wrong here. its just that all i did when i opened the phone was plugged the speaker part back in, nothing else. that was several months ago. everything was fine until the past month when the phone started going downhill.
either way, i contacted att they put me through the warranty department, etc. i told them the void sticker came off. theyre sending a replacement phone, and i should get it by the end of the week. how to i restore the os's software? i am aware of downgrading back to att's wm5 version but is that all i need to do? would i need to change any radios, spl versions, etc?
thanks for the help.
oh yea and theyre sending me just another 8525. no tilt.... oh well haha.

Since when was deception EVER done in a good fashion??
Probably fall on deaf ears anyway since youve got a replacment 8525, lesson to learn here is the VOID sticker really is there for a reason.
um ok whatever. i dont see why i am getting bashed over this when you can find things such as this and more on this site. so we are too guilty to decieve htc over something simple as a speaker plug coming undone, but guilt free when tricking att into using there mediamax plan for basic phones as opposed to there pda plan, because it costs more?
funny that. and the best part is thats not even the sneakiest of things ive come across on these forums. but ok whatever. heh.
all im saying is its one thing because the speaker came unplugged. now if i had tried to completely replace a part, or tweaked with something in the phone itself, rather than just push the plug back in so i originally would not have to bother with a warranty exchange and go through all the trouble. i havent even had the phone for a year yet and its as of recent been going to ****.
but yea.....im a deceptive, lying cheating theiving bastard.
oh yea. and one more thing......given even if i was some sort of a con artist from this.....does htc video drivers come to mind? where as htc makes phones more expensive than an iphone (kaiser) but with the functionality of something of less than half the power? and im the theif? ok.
heh
Chill out man. This is an awesome board with tons of good information, and not some forum to go back and forth. I think all we were trying to say is next time as much as it sucks to do it, just get the warranty replacement. Enjoy your new phone.
im not sure if you received your replacement yet. But when you send your old phone into the warranty department they will check to see if the phone has been opened. The first thing they can check is the screws themselves they will show tampering. But also just when you think you have pulled one over on them you. you get a letter in the mail saying they are billing your account $450 due to your physical damage and tampering with the phone. They wont send your old phone back and you will get your next att bill and it will be $450 dollars higher than you expected. im not saying this will happen but i would watch out for this.
and if you really want to cheat warranty exchange. Do a warranty replacement wait a couple of days after the phone gets there and then call them up and say were is my phone. There policy is to ship out another right away. They will ask some questions but nothing serious and yes will ship out another phone right away. I know this not because i have done it but because i worked for att for 2 years in both csr and tech support.
well thanks for the info. i did not know there was a difference between warranty exchange and warranty replacement they both sound the same to me. anyways i believe the replacement is the one i did, as they sent me a refurbished phone, not a new one, and if thats what some were thinking i really did not care whether it was new or not, just a replacement phone. as for the screws i couldnt see any tampering evidence, the paint all remains intact. im usually pretty careful when it comes to screwing and unscrewing things. lol lets just hope i dont "Screw" myself haha.
oh and i was chill. i was just finding it funny that i was being directed as a theif by the comments. like i said its one thing for a simple plug but its not like i replaced the speaker or tweaked with something.
is the speaker plug easy to find, i had teh same problem dropped it and i can hear it when i shake it, its loose...but im worried its deeper than i can get to
i was wondering if i cut the string that attaches it and got rid of it, do you think tmobile would refuse to take my phone back if there was a problem? would that void a warranty?

When I had my T-Mobile Wing, mine actually fell off, when the ringer on my phone stopped working, and they asked me if there was any physical damage to the phone, if I ever dropped it, or if there was water damage. I said no and mentioned that the Memory card plastic flap fell off. The Rep said that the warranty was voided because that could be the cause of the ringing malfunction.........no joke..........I then asked to speak to their supervisor, While I was on the line the rep informed his supervisor about our conversation and the supervisor said to go ahead and send a free new Wing.
But why would you want to do this? For one if you take a close look inside where the memory card sits there are a few holes where dirt and dust can get in and do some damage, granted it is unlikely but why risk it just to get rid of a flap?
i think the mini usb door is so flexible and seems like its gonna break. Mine is not really solid and it stretch pretty far. I wish it was different sometimes because it doesn't let you plug in some chargers since the flash is so close to the access point and the usb flap gets in the way
has anyone's fallen off?
hbguy
First thing I do with all of my phones is rip it off. NEVER have had a problem with returns ever.
If you're an ignoramus and ask if it matters, of course they are going to play you for a fool.
Secondly, I think that Kronos has an issue with reading comprehension as he is talking about your memory card cover while you are asking about the USB port.
I gently pried mine off within 5 minutes of the phones arrival and I have it safely stored "just in case"
well i just pulled a little and the door came off so issue done. i wasnt ever going to tell tmo i took it off, just if someone noticed would they auto deny me. im smart, i was just gonna say it fell off the string.
mine just fell off on its own, but i wish it didnt cause im affraid that water might some how get inside and ruin it, do u think tmob will give me a new phone cause that?
oh and also i wanna get bronze or white g1 but i dont wanna pay $400 just to have a different color. does anyone know if i can get different color with exchange of my black one?
Right, as I'm a pillock I 'slept' with my phone listening to music, and during the night I pinged the phone off my bed which caught the edge of my desk leg, hitting the phone on the top right of the phone; pretty much directly above the forward facing camera...
As a result the glass of the screen cracked which means that the phone, touch-screen, and LCD are all fine, but with a nice spider-web of cracked glass on it
I broke it on saturday gone, and thinking that Orange insurance wouldn't be open on a bank holiday weekend, I didn't call in until today (tuesday). Apparently the insurance policy of Orange that I took out only covers damage if you report it within 48 hours, so that won't work. Fortunately Orange said that I could get a replacement for £760 :S
I've seen the bits on ebay that I need, and I have no problem with opening up the phone to fix it myself, but I've had to send the phone back already for it vibrating constantly, and I don't want to eff my warranty 3 months into my contract...
Anyone know the best place to get this fixed for the cheapest price that would keep my warranty intact?
Cheers guys, you've already helped me a great deal (I troll here pretty much everyday )
why not call orange again, saying you did it that morning?? Always worth a try
I've never had a bad experiance with orange insurance!

I would do but that stinks of insurance fraud... I feel like a criminal as it is, as I couldn't remember the times when the incident occured, and the guy on the phone called me out as I apparently sent messages when I would have noticed that the phone was broken.
Gagh, I'll wait a month, punch it, and then call again
Cheers for your reply

Theyre a bit funny about certain things.. like it won't cover deliberate carelesness or if alcohol was involved. Your paying for the insurance so make use of it..

Cheers guys, I'll sort it on insurance shortly. Gonna make sure my story is straight first though this time.
Thanks for the information on how to get it repaired, £89.99 ex is quite a lot considering its just a pane of glass. I could get the hacksaw out and take out one of my windows

So you need to be extreeeemly careful and there in not even one chance allowed.

48 hours - insurance.
The reason this clase exists is to avoid paying you out if you phone late. The insurance suffers no prejudice is you ring one minute late or one day late or even a month late. So obviously the only reason is to limit claims. This is unfair. If you challenge this clause undr the UCTA legislation you will almost certainly win in the small claims court.
Stronger than you might think
My wife dropped my HD on a concrete floor in a supermarket - without its case - when it was a month old. It went down with a hell of a crack but suffered NO damage whatsoever. Miracle.
Has anybody had experience removing a screen scratch from their hd2?
i've only had mine for 5 days and its got a massive scratch on the screen, don't even know how it happened, i always keep my phones in a glasses baggy, my iphone is still mint after 18 months but today i was watching some youtube clips on my break and the screen was perfect, then put it on charge at work and when i came back to it it was really badly scratched, not sure if someone decided to have a look at it and dropped it while i wasn't there but needless to say i'm gutted, i was thinking of sending it back to o2 coz it has a few problems, random letters on typing and stuck messages, not sure if they'll accept it back even as faulty with this big scratch, any advice as to what o2 do with faulty phones? do they check them, bin them or fix them? it was bought over the phone btw, will they just write it off and send a new one because of the problems?
please help
I think you will struggle to get it replaced under warranty with a fat scratch, even if it didn't work at all, let alone a few issues that are (apparently) solved by updates.
Do you have any cctv at work? I'd be spitting mad and hunting for the culprit!
there is cctv but not in my department, and lots of people come in and out,
worst case scenario if o2 won't accept it back as faulty they'll just send it back as it is,
and if i'm lucky i'll get a replacement?
just been giving the screen a rub with some t cut and it seems to be helping with most of the scratch, there is just a 5 mm part that is deeper than the rest, do you think that would affect an exchange?
Maybe, you`ve got nothing to lose.....
Gotta be worth a try. Chances are they're only going to flash a new rom and ship it back anyway. Course, if you have insurance it COULD go missing....
insurance is what my work mate said, any recomendations for someone cheap but with full cover?
Just for the record, the random letters on typing and stuck messages thing probably won't be enough to get you a new device. These flaws are all over the place. HTC will tell you the 1.66 rom will solve those problems. And the 'not quite aligned screen' is also a thing that pops up here on a regular basis.
Hope you succeed.
Hello guys, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I have a very similar problem except without the scratched screen. The details are over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627374
Basically, I sent it to HTC and it came back much worse than it was when I sent it to them. What can I do now? Send it back to HTC again or would O2 be better? Is there a way I can get a new phone?
Thx.
If you return it to O2, they'll courier out a new one and pick the "faulty" one up at the same time, so you would get a new phone straight away - they did this with my first HD2 which didn't recognise SIM cards.
What they do with the "faulty" one once it's couriered back is anyone's guess. You could be lucky and it just goes in a big faulty pile to be sent back to HTC. I would deny that it was scratched if they phone you up about it, but that's quite naughty.
Awesome, thanks elyl .
My phone isn't scratched in the first place. Hope it works out for the original poster too.

what department at o2 did you use to get a courier exchange , what did you ask for and what problem did your phone have so that they exchanged it, cheers
sometimes the couriers themselves check out the goods if you are returning faulty handsets that have supposedly have no physical damage. ive had this happen to me a few times with my business units.
i would send it back to O2 anyway... if you have only had the handset for five days, explain that the screen is not "perfect". Its all about how you word it on the return form. Put down your other issues also.
This way when the courier turns up with your new handset and checks the goods and the return form (IF he has one) he will have no choice but to oblige.

Before I divulge this story I don't endorse this sort of thing.
My mate got the HD2 on an upgrade through O2, he sat on it within 24hrs and got a smudge on the screen, called them up and claimed there was a fault with the screen; which they then sent a brand new replacement. This promptly arrived and then by shear idiocy he managed to put it the through the washing machine the next day!
The device turns on but the back light has shorted, so you can see the GUI but only under strong light and it is basically unreadable. He will get insurance via O2 then claim next month saying he lost it. However the insurance does cost 10 pound a month; but still cheaper than 500...

Am I the only one who finds the people who break their phones and then try to weasel their way into a new, free handset annoying as hell?
My local HTC center used to offer courier exhanges for all HTC products, but not anymore. I called 'em up the other day to get my phone exchanged and they told me they no longer do it because people were abusing the service.

no... you are not the only one who finds unscrupulous antics extremely irritating.
however,... some of the stories i hear are so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh.
the irony of it is, that when i ordered the phone it went through ok and the money came off my card, then i got a text a few hours after the order, saying they were out of stock, i rang a few days later to see when they expected fresh stock and the girl i spoke to re ordered it for me, 2 days later 2 phones arrived at my house delivered as one shipment, i could have sold one phone but being honest i rang o2 and explained they'd made a mistake, i sent one phone back the next morning,
my phone also has the landscape/portrait problems in internet explorer and calender apps, where if i open in portrait and switch to landscape the screen flicks back and forth fast until i pull the battery, i planned to send it for an exchange anyway as my mate who has one at work has none of my phones problems, its just my luck it got scratched
Hey recently it sounds like the speaker on my phone (the in call speaker, not the speakerphone) is blown and sounds like its crackling. Has anyone else seen this problem. I have taken apart my phone a few times to clear out the dust, so I'm not sure if I could take it to a store at this point. Any suggestions would be great. Right now I'm using a Bluetooth for calls, because its so annoying.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
I had the same problem... taking it apart and blowing the dust out of the little speaker component with some air duster seems to have solved the issue for now.
I wish I could find a replacement since it is so easy to do, but I have not located a source. Next time I am in China I am going to have to find one of the cell phone parts malls and pick up some of the speakers and other components.
The other thing is that the phone hasn't been out a year, so it is still under manufacturer warranty if you want to deal with that.
This happened to me. I took the phone to a Sprint store and they ordered me a new one for free. No questions asked. I wouldn't take your phone to them rooted though.
Sounds like this is a design flaw in our phone...or at least bad hardware.
I took mine in to the Sprint store with both the crackling speaker and dust under the screen. I have befriended one of the techs, there. He replaced mine with a Hero that had been a 30-day return phone. They had checked it over. It had fewer minutes and less data sent/received, than the one I took in had, when I got it off craigslist.
Just curious, though. For those who have used air duster on theirs, did you also have the "dust under the screen" problem?
Just take it to the Sprint Store with 1.5 loaded and they will give you a refurbished one. But I do have insurance. Literally took ten minutes.

I was thinking about doing this, but i have already opened up the hero to clean out dust, thus breaking the "white tape" on one of the screws that holds the housing together. so they will be able to see that i have "tampered" with it. Any suggestions on where to get the "white tape" to cover it back up?
