Hi all,
Recently got my Nook Simple Touch, upgrade to firmware version 1.2.1
I tried rooting following the described steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2040351
but after inserting the SD my device doesn't power on anymore
I tried anything, and even tried nook manager ver.0.4.0 tested under win (win32diskimager, DiskImage, Roadkil's Disk Image) and under linux ( dd ),
the image is copied without problems, I tried several different cards, but has no effect
If I put the card while the device is running, I can see the files but when I reboot I can not boot
After this failure I decided to try this:
http://www.the-ebook.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25913
but again the same problem, I reboot I can not boot
Please, help

First of all, do a factory reset using this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475613
Then use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351 method to root your Nook. It's pretty simple and works very well.
reset factory steps here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28763125&postcount=5
and before do anything .... take backup ..... so to avoid brick and damage ur nook
let us know what happen with u

Hi,
Thank you for all the help, appreciated!
So far I did the following:
reset factory,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28763125&postcount=5
reset them successfully.
after that again, I tried to boot from the SD card, but still no success
Then try the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475613
But again, with the image of the sd card, can boot, therefore I can not do factory reset with this tool (
I made the following conclusion:
any image to put on the SD card, the device will not start
Any other suggestions (((((

For example with WinImage
With your MicroSD card now clean, open up WinImage and select ‘Disk’ -> ‘Restore Virtual Disk Image on Physical Drive…’ and select the drive letter associated with the MicroSD card and hit ‘OK’. Now locate the the folder were you extracted .img file and select the file. If you do not see it, make sure file type is set to ‘All files’. Confirm and the .img file will be written to the card.
And I try the same with win32diskimager, DiskImage, Roadkil's Disk Image) and under linux ( dd )
I use Win32 Disk Imager and have never had any issues. You are selecting a .img file to write, correct?
Are you sure your SD card is ..
1) big enough for the image you are trying to write to it?
2) not corrupted in some way?
Perhaps attempt a full format of the card (uncheck "Quick Format") before attempting to write the image again.

I just can not figure out what's wrong
It seems from the thread that you have tried several different images, is this correct? If not, perhaps the problem is that the .img file you have is corrupt. Perhaps attempt to re-download one or all of the image files.

Here I think.
You can also try this method.

I used the root method at unlockr.com, and i have #root# access in the terminal emu app. When i get to the part at unlockr about flashing recovery, (thru terminal emulator) i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso
I have RUU'd the phone at least 5 times... I have also tried using the cmd using the guide here, and get an error at basically the same spot.
my hero is 1.56.651.2. i have spent over 15 hours across 2 days searching forums and trying different methods, but i guess i must be doing something wrong.
btw.. the very first time i tried using the method from unlockr (root through cmd, flash recovery through terminal emu) it *almost* worked. It tried and got a ton of messages and an error regarding too little memory. after i looked it up and realized i could have just freed up memory in the PHONE(not sdcard) it was too late, i had already RUU'd again. It hasnt come close to flashing since, only the error reading message.
i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso

this isn't your issue is it?

do a RUU to go back to bone stock, same version you have
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=608434
follow this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
EDIT: and when it get to this part about "flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img" give it an extra min after you hit enter and it "looks" like it's done before proceeding
let me know if you get stuck, i'll keep an eye on this thread also let me know at exactly which step "looks weird"
oops that was just a typo. I have been using .img for the file ext like you are supposed to. I have formatted the sd before trying, and the same error. The guide you pointed me to also did not work, I always get a flash error at (step 18). I have RUU'd at least 5 times to start over, and it didnt help any.
and about giving it an extra minute after the flash command, it instantly tells me
"error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img"
so i cant really do that.
What should i do
I have ran into that same issue. I would guess you have upgraded the stock sd card. If you have, it is formated to fat32 not fat like the original. Try formating the card fat then try again. Good luck to you.
Dave
EDIT: I see you have formated the card. I believe the card has to be fat not fat 32 (someone correct me if im wrong). When I was rooting my phone I had same error til I formated it fat. May the force be with you.
What do you mean by upgraded the sd card? I didnt ever do that...at least not on purpose. So how would i check the format?
Put the card into a card reader in a pc, right click on drive and hit properties.
crap, i dont have a reader for this type of card. no way to do it through the phone?
and this problem couldnt be from anything else, could it?

you can mount the card from the notifications bar when you plug your phone in usb. then just right click on the removable disk in my computer (mine's drive H: ) then click "properties"
it will bring up this window
if it says FAT32 then there's the (assumed) problem.
Okay!
it IS fat32.

do you know how to format?
before you format be sure to save anything you have on your sd card that you want/need as it will erase everything.
1. move anything you like to save to your computer from your sd card
2. right click on the removable disk in my computer
3. click on "format"
4. in the little window that pops up chose "FAT" leave everything else alone
5. click start.
6. thats it!
damn its not working.
As soon as i click format it unmounts...any idea?
BTW thanks for the help

i've never tried it that way, but you will probably have to go the card reader option, or use...
GParted
windows disk management
but those tools give you the power to seriously mess up your computer. so i recommend running these on someone's computer you don't like.
or the card reader option
You can format the card under "SDCard and Phone storage"
Just unmount then format.
Okay well modchipper said he had the same problem, and the sd has to be formatted to FAT,not Fat32.
Gparted and the other tool, how can they mess up my computer?
The format option in the phone formats to FAT32...
If you're not careful you can accidentally nuke your hard drive, instead of your sdcard.
Well i tried windows disk management and it didnt see the drive. Gives me a feeling that gparted wont work either. does anyone know for fact that sdcard format has to be FAT?
Well once again I'm at my mom's, and her USB ports are screwed up, so I couldn't tel you what mine is formatted as.
Well i have multiple SDCards, but the one that is currently in my phone is formatted in FAT32 & I believe that was the one I used to root & flash the recovery originally...
Well this just seems impossible it seems ive hit a wall...
Im trying to use Fresh pre kitchen, but that wont work either because i have windows 7.
The Fresh Pre-kitchen works fine on Win7.
I have reloaded the stock RUU back onto my phone with no issues, but when I try to flash PC36IMG.zip I get stuck. I have downloaded the file several times using multiple browsers and have even downloaded it using my phone and placed it in the root of the sd card with the same result. Here is the log that is generated when trying to load the image:

There may have been more lines but the only way I could get this log was to try to snap a picture of it because it only shows for about a second. I have noticed that several people are having the same issue and thought it would be nice to have a thread started to find a solution or determine if we are doing something wrong. Attached is a screenshot of the error.
Update: Reformating the card fixed the issue!
Use a different micro sd card, re-download on the new card
I am not using the original 8GB card, I am using a 16GB card but good suggestion I will try that. I hope it is that simple.
Format your SD card to FAT32
It is currently using FAT32 already but I am going to try a reformat and see what happens, will post results soon.
It's the card. I had the exact same problem using a 1gb card and ended up having to use the card from my Droid. I'm not sure why it happens though, I thought it was because hboot needed a sdhc card but your using one so I dunno.
Thanks a lot a reformat of the SD card did the trick! I have been trying everything and that worked!!! Im happy now
I had this problem too. I tried re-downloading the file, formatting the card in my Evo, formatting it with the sd card formatting app in Windows. Nothing fixed it. I FINALLY booted my netbook into Ubuntu (Linux) and formatted from Gparted (FAT32). That did it. So, if you have a Linux box available, try that. Or a live Linux CD/DVD would work too.
Same problem i formatted my card and it still doesnt work for me any advise?

If you have access to a different MicroSD card I would try that, I can confirm that it is definitely a problem with the card though. One other suggestion is using Linux disk management program I heard one person say windows could not format it properly then used Linux and the card worked fine afterwards.
thanks jdickerman ill give it a try and post results soon
nope tried everything formatting the card and i got a new 4gb sd card and still the same problem
I had this same problem.
With Windows 7 machine, I formatted the stock 8GB microSD with Fat32(default) with 4096bytes. I used a "quick format" and then a copy and paste to move the PC63IMG.zip file to the card.
This worked for me.
-Sam
I am having the same problem - I've tried formatting using windows and now linux and still get the same results.
No image and No image or wrong image.
I also get a message saying - update failed Main version is older!
no matter what I've tried the results are always the same. Suggestions?
I - sort of - have the same problem.
When it hits "PC36DIAG.zip" it says "No image!"
when it gets to "PC36IMG.zip" though - it starts updating Boot/Bootloader/MICROP/etc etc
Am I missing something from the PC36DIAG.zip? Phone works fine...
Make sure the .zip is not corrupt by trying to extract it on your PC first.
I had this same error and noticed the file was corrupt when I tried to extract in on my notebook. I re-downloaded the file, copied it to the SD and all is well.
Remove the .zip on the file name. I had the same problem because I named the file PC36IMG.zip it already is a zip file so just name it PC36IMG. This worked for me. Goodluck!
will this get rid of these messages and still keep root??
i need to return my phone for i have the light leakage, and it is getting worse.
same problem
I am at my wits end. I have tried everything that has been suggested in this thread. When I try to update the radio in my HTC incredible, I get the message "no image or wrong image". It is weird because when the bootloader reaches the "ZIP" stage, it looks like it installs the software. I see a status bar on the right side of the screen. But then when I reboot, I have the same version of the radio.
I have reformatted the SD card twice now (both times using different FAT32 options). I have verified that the MD5 signature of the ZIP file is correct. I have made sure that I download the file directly to the phone and not copy it over the USB cable. Nothing works. I always have the same result.
This is really bothering me, because when I update to one of the modified ROMs, everything except my GPS functionality works. According to another thread, my problem is that I am using version 1.00xxx of the radio software. But nothing I do allows me to install the update.
The only thing I have not tried is reformatting using Linux. But I have very little confidence that will work, and given the amount of work it would take to install Linux...I am hoping there is another option. Other people in this forum seem to have been successful reformatting the SD card using windows.
Thanks for any pointers!

Hi,
I did some wrong wipe using CWM, then I think my phone is clean now.
Now, if I press Power+ VolumeUp + VolumeDown buttons, I'll get to the pink screen.
Trying to connect to the PC thru USB cable, I'll get a Removable disk named "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM", with size of 239MB.
I tried to copy all 5 files downloaded from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370960 to /image/, or /cust/image/, or /cust_backup/image/ and the UPDATE.APP (from step 2, official 2.3.5 package) in /dload/ folder of a blank SDcard, but it still goes to the pink screen.
Any hint for me? I cannot download the official 2.2.1 package
Thanks a lot!

I re-partitioned my phone before following this guide: http://android.modaco.com/topic/341374-custom-you-data-partitions-size/
My phone is the GSM version, not the CDMA (C8800) one.
I think my /system/ dir is also empty. Does it have anything to do with the upgrade?
Following this post I'm able to have CWM4 and Oxygen back.

But, still not able to install stock 2.3.5. Any hint on this? Thanks!

I tried with the external sdcard. My card is 4GB, FAT32. Should that be the cause of this issue?
I also tried with the internal sdcard (/HWuserdata/dload/UPDATE.APP) but the result was same.
Is there anycase that my UPDATE.APP is corrupted? Could you please help check it's checksum?
Thanks!
============= UPDATE ===============
I tried with the internal sdcard ONLY (remove the external card), and it's working. Firmware update Step 2/2 - ~35% now.
THANK YOU A LOT!
Friend Averell I had the same problem. I solved it this way:
When the phone was off (black screen) after the "Step 2" update,
I pushed the Vol-Down key (not the Vol-up) and then the power button.
After this I left the power button, but I kept pressing the Vol-down for at least 10-20'', until a screen was shown which told me "Formating User Data, Formating Cache" etc.
After all these the phone booted ok and the stock ROM was activated.
I didn't even needed to apply the "Step 3" of the upgrade.
Try it and I am sure your problem will be solved.

I meant the internal 2Gb memory of the phone. Sounds still weird tho. Unless your sdcard has some exotic file system that the phone can't deal with (mine has fat32 and everything went well), I don't know what it could be. Maybe some wiser person could step up here. And check that you didn't use capital letters for your dload folder...Don't know if that really matters, but it could...
Thank all.
The problem seems to be at my 4GB SD card. I flashed 2.3.5 successfully with the internal card.
I tried another 2GB card, and it also work.
Thanks!
yesterday, i managed to update oxygen 2.3.2 r1 to huawei's official 2.3.5 with my 8GB Kingston card, and everything went well, but today when i tried to shoot video, camera stopped after 6 seconds, and phone said that sd card is removed, and i tried to restart phone, took sd card off from phone and formatted card in PC, but nothing worked, then i put another 2GB card in phone and everything is working again??!? weird.. maybe my kingston's warranty just voided last night. You could just try re-formatting the 8Gb card and see if it works. I've ended up cleaning up the whole sdcard for a few times (I've usually had a small ext2 partion and wanted to start from the clean table) after which everything has been back to normal again (in windows cmd: diskpart --> list disk --> choose Disk "your sdcard" --> clean all --> create new partion and format the card) ..or you probably could do that in CWM recovery too...I'm just too used to do it this way...just beware if you try this, be SURE you choose the right disk or you'll end up deleting a whole partion from your computer's hard drive.

Too bad. But it's hard to believe that your SD card has something wrong in it since it works in your computer. Probably another unexplained weird software glitch again. Some people reported that they can access the sdcard but not being able to write on it, maybe this "bug" is in the same category.
Btw, have you tried any other ROM and if the problem still exist there?

Too bad. But it's hard to believe that your SD card has something wrong in it since it works in your computer. Probably another unexplained weird software glitch again. Some people reported that they can access the sdcard but not being able to write on it, maybe this "bug" is in the same category.

ok, i tried card to nokia phone, and it works in there.. also it has been in huawei since beginning, so it has worked with official 2.2, B160 custom rom and with oxygen latest. But now when i changed to new beta 2.3 rom, it worked about a day. Maybe i have to wait one more month until final rom is released. Thanks sbasil for good advices.
I'm trying to root my NST 1.1.2 with the latest touchnooter (touchnooter-2-1-31.img)
I am on a mac and I know how to use the terminal with dd to write the image to the microsd card. However everytime I try to boot my NST with the microsd it just goes to the regular B&N boot screen like normal. Then when it's all loaded it tells me the SD card is damaged and I need to format it.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching around but can't seem to find anything similar.

Read SD (using dd on mac) and compare with original (touchnooter-2-1-31.img)
If it’s the same – try another SD card.
How are you using dd? Are you writing directly to the card, or to the first partition of the card?
I figured out that the card was /dev/disk1s1 by using "df"
Then I run "diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1s1"
Then I run "sudo dd if=nooter.img of=/dev/disk1s1"
After that I get some numbers telling me the ins and outs. If I pull the card out and put it back into my mac it says it can't read it at all, is that bad?
I think you have to write it to /dev/disk1 , but I'm not sure, I never worked with a Mac.
In Linux the card would be sdx, and if there is a partition on it it would be sdx1. But it is necessary to write directly to the card and not to the first partition.

Thank you! I think this is exactly where I went wrong. Trying again now.

Although I have Win XP I had this problem when doing 2 mistakes :
1. I didn't format the SD card before placing the nooters/CWM on the card. I use "SDformatter" for that.
2. The second mistake was not reading properly what was written in the message after formatting = SAFELY REMOVE THE DEVICE. I didn't remove it & I was burning the image straight on the formatted SD card, so that didn't help either.
But after formatting SD card, removing it and then burning the image, I never had that problem again.
I want to root my NST but I'm afraid of bricking it.
I did a search and found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1188595 but there's conflicting evidence as to whether resotration on bricking is possible.
How common is bricking the NST and how easy is it to restore it if rooting fails?
Use nook manager and first backup your nook as an image file to your PC or using your SD card (note you will need a big enough sd card for the backup most people have at least 1gig )
rootings pretty straightforward with nook manager just follow the ON screen instructions
your nook like most androids have a recovery built in an can be activated to restore your nook to its factory state
Just make sure you have a good backup before you get started and its a safe process. Backup with NookManager first and check that the backup is complete. Read through the NookManager thread on how the get the backup off your SD card and how to check if its a good, complete backup. Then you will always be able to restore back to before you rooted so root away.

Alright I feel reassured.
I found the NookManager thread, it's this one right? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351
I guess if I follow all the intructions I'll have nothing to worry about.

Yes, that's it. You'll also want the NTGAppsAttack thread from the same forum as well.

It's pretty hard to mess up if you follow the instructions. A few notes from my experience -
Timing is critical after enabling WiFi on a rooted Nook; install something quickly through Google Market, or you'll need to uninstall the automatic update to it before it'll work.
When I restored my Nook back to (registered) stock via Nook Manager in order to update from 1.2.0 to 1.2.1, the B&N registration process complained (presumably because the same device had been re-registered whilst rooted, because I was fiddling). It rebooted and worked the next time.
A backup will be theoretically upto 2GB, if the Nook is full (e.g. of purchased B&N ebooks), but mine were about 200-odd MB (NookManager zero's unused space and compresses the backup with gzip).

You can validate the backup is complete by opening it with a zip / archiver program like 7-Zip and verifying the uncompressed size is 2 GB+/- (mine shows 1,962,934,272). That gives you two confirmations - the backup is a valid gz file and all the partitions got backed up.
Hmm this is weird.
Having wrote the image of NookManager to my micro SD card, the nook doesn't want to boot with it in it....
If I remove the SD card it boots just fine. If I put in the SD card when it's on it recognises it too.
Have you ever heard of something like this happening?
I'm on 1.2.1.
How did you write the image to the card?

Did you turn your Nook off completely (i.e. by pushing and holding the power button on the back for about 30s) before inserting the SD card, then turn it on with the SD card inserted?
What class is the SD card? Do you have a Class 6 (or slower) card you can use?

I can't post a link to it I'm afraid and the packaging doesn't say anything about class.

OK, you say if you boot the device and put the SD card it recognizes it. Try plugging it into you PC card reader or plug your NST into your PC and verify that the NookManager files appear on the SD card. You should see the folders custom, files, hooks, menu and scripts on the card and files like boot.scr, uImage and uRamdisk and some others.

The packaging and the card itself almost always have the class symbol on them. See the SD association speed class page for examples of the symbols.

Ok I checked the micro SD and it looks like it's a class 10...Is this the reason it didn't work?

Most likely. There have been quite a few reports of problems using class 10 cards.

From a PM from cairnarvon, I suspect that his SD card is a counterfeit 64GB device. Unlucky!
I managed to make a backup through nook manager.
it is a ~350 MB .gz file.
The uncompressed version is roughly 2GB. So far so good.
I tried to extract the archive and this happens:
Code:
$ gunzip -d backup.full.gz
gzip: backup.full.gz: invalid compressed data--crc error
gzip: backup.full.gz: invalid compressed data--length error
I tried to search the forum and I found these threads
Not sure if they're relavant though...

Is this that same wonky SD card?
Where are you reading backup.full.gz from with gunzip? The SD card via USB Mass Storage mode of the Nook, the SD card via a card reader, or a local copy after previously copying it?
How does the md5 checksum compare with the .md5 file NookManager created?

No I bought an authentic one, it has a logo and everything
I copied the file to my local machine and tried to extract it.

I'm not too sure what this means...I know there's a md5 file with the backup but that's about it.
I formatted the partition and tried the backup again but got the same error...
Is backup entirely necessary? Are there any stock backup images on the forum that I could download and use?

just run md5sum on the backup.full.gz. Its output should match the contents of backup.full.gz.md5 (which NookManager generated after completing its backup).

I'm of the opinion that it is. With a backup you can always restore it to factory-fresh. The backup also includes some unique details, like the serial number and, I believe, some decryption keys.
