[Q] Can't get the "rooted forever" screen :-( - Nook Touch General

I'm trying to root my NST 1.1.2 with the latest touchnooter (touchnooter-2-1-31.img)
I am on a mac and I know how to use the terminal with dd to write the image to the microsd card. However everytime I try to boot my NST with the microsd it just goes to the regular B&N boot screen like normal. Then when it's all loaded it tells me the SD card is damaged and I need to format it.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching around but can't seem to find anything similar.

Read SD (using dd on mac) and compare with original (touchnooter-2-1-31.img)
If it’s the same – try another SD card.

How are you using dd? Are you writing directly to the card, or to the first partition of the card?

I figured out that the card was /dev/disk1s1 by using "df"
Then I run "diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1s1"
Then I run "sudo dd if=nooter.img of=/dev/disk1s1"
After that I get some numbers telling me the ins and outs. If I pull the card out and put it back into my mac it says it can't read it at all, is that bad?

I think you have to write it to /dev/disk1 , but I'm not sure, I never worked with a Mac.
In Linux the card would be sdx, and if there is a partition on it it would be sdx1. But it is necessary to write directly to the card and not to the first partition.

Although I have Win XP I had this problem when doing 2 mistakes :
1. I didn't format the SD card before placing the nooters/CWM on the card. I use "SDformatter" for that.
2. The second mistake was not reading properly what was written in the message after formatting = SAFELY REMOVE THE DEVICE. I didn't remove it & I was burning the image straight on the formatted SD card, so that didn't help either.
But after formatting SD card, removing it and then burning the image, I never had that problem again.

SD Card Problem

Ok well I removed my sd card from my G1, and when I put it back in it gives me a "Blank SD Card" notification. I tried resetting my G1, and it didnt work. So I mounted it on my laptop and now it says "Drive G is not formatted would you like to format now?." I am really not trying to lose all my data and apps, and I kno my stuff didnt get deleted, how can this b fixed?
One of two ways, in my eyes.
First try looking at paragon, it might be able to find the partitions again and hopefully repair them.
Two try a data recovery program, personally I like GetDataBack but it only works for FAT and NTFS and not EXT2 if your data and apps were on that partition.
Hmm I tried GDB and it took about an hour and what do u kno I need the licensed version to get my files off, and will Paragon work? Cuz I dont wanna waste another hour.
SD Card fix ok
just put the sd card inside the adapter that all sd card brings when you get it.ok
AND than insert it on your labtop and copy all your files to your computer and format your sd card..

Have you tried inserting the sdcard into a computer running ubuntu? It will probably recognize the ext partition without any trouble.

I dunno, that's why I asked if you had tried it yet or not. You can always burn a Ubuntu livecd and test it without installing anything. As long as the partition table is intact it should be accessible.

I loaded up Cyanogen's latest last week, formatted my 16gb to EXT2 and Fat32... all was working great for a week, then today, my G1 went blank. Upon a restart, the SD card came up with "Blank SD Card." Viewing the card from my card reader... can't read any files... what's the program that you "found?" I'll probably just fight through reformatting and rebuilding all my files... Later I'll perform file backup when I get it right.
this sound like your problem??
Hey asaspades, something like this happened to me a while back and I could read it on my laptop/cardreader and recover my files and reformat. Obv u have tried this. The thing is the same thing has hsappened not 10 min ago lol. When this happened before I was running my g1 as stock but now I have cyanmod (3.6.8.1 I think) amd apps 2 sd on ext2 partition. I am not at a computer atm but will try to recover the same way as before though I won't be able to access the ext2 partition (will try with ubuntu, hav wubi installer on pc). Oh and I rebooted after I realised something was wrong and now have a constant preparing sd card checking for errors notification. This sound kinda similar to your problem at all? I would like to know what is causing this. Maybe I just have a bad/corrupted sdcard lol. Anyway its really pissin me off not knowing
Left 4 a while and it now says damaged sdcard you may need to reformat.

Error reading /sdcard/ *Guru assistance needed!*

I used the root method at unlockr.com, and i have #root# access in the terminal emu app. When i get to the part at unlockr about flashing recovery, (thru terminal emulator) i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso
I have RUU'd the phone at least 5 times... I have also tried using the cmd using the guide here, and get an error at basically the same spot.
my hero is 1.56.651.2. i have spent over 15 hours across 2 days searching forums and trying different methods, but i guess i must be doing something wrong.
btw.. the very first time i tried using the method from unlockr (root through cmd, flash recovery through terminal emu) it *almost* worked. It tried and got a ton of messages and an error regarding too little memory. after i looked it up and realized i could have just freed up memory in the PHONE(not sdcard) it was too late, i had already RUU'd again. It hasnt come close to flashing since, only the error reading message.
i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso

do a RUU to go back to bone stock, same version you have
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=608434
follow this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
EDIT: and when it get to this part about "flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img" give it an extra min after you hit enter and it "looks" like it's done before proceeding
let me know if you get stuck, i'll keep an eye on this thread also let me know at exactly which step "looks weird"
oops that was just a typo. I have been using .img for the file ext like you are supposed to. I have formatted the sd before trying, and the same error. The guide you pointed me to also did not work, I always get a flash error at (step 18). I have RUU'd at least 5 times to start over, and it didnt help any.
and about giving it an extra minute after the flash command, it instantly tells me
"error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img"
so i cant really do that.
What should i do
I have ran into that same issue. I would guess you have upgraded the stock sd card. If you have, it is formated to fat32 not fat like the original. Try formating the card fat then try again. Good luck to you.
Dave
EDIT: I see you have formated the card. I believe the card has to be fat not fat 32 (someone correct me if im wrong). When I was rooting my phone I had same error til I formated it fat. May the force be with you.
What do you mean by upgraded the sd card? I didnt ever do that...at least not on purpose. So how would i check the format?
Put the card into a card reader in a pc, right click on drive and hit properties.
crap, i dont have a reader for this type of card. no way to do it through the phone?
and this problem couldnt be from anything else, could it?

you can mount the card from the notifications bar when you plug your phone in usb. then just right click on the removable disk in my computer (mine's drive H: ) then click "properties"
it will bring up this window
if it says FAT32 then there's the (assumed) problem.
Okay!
it IS fat32.

before you format be sure to save anything you have on your sd card that you want/need as it will erase everything.
1. move anything you like to save to your computer from your sd card
2. right click on the removable disk in my computer
3. click on "format"
4. in the little window that pops up chose "FAT" leave everything else alone
5. click start.
6. thats it!
damn its not working.
As soon as i click format it unmounts...any idea?
BTW thanks for the help

i've never tried it that way, but you will probably have to go the card reader option, or use...
GParted
windows disk management
but those tools give you the power to seriously mess up your computer. so i recommend running these on someone's computer you don't like.
or the card reader option
You can format the card under "SDCard and Phone storage"
Just unmount then format.
Okay well modchipper said he had the same problem, and the sd has to be formatted to FAT,not Fat32.
Gparted and the other tool, how can they mess up my computer?
The format option in the phone formats to FAT32...
If you're not careful you can accidentally nuke your hard drive, instead of your sdcard.
Well i tried windows disk management and it didnt see the drive. Gives me a feeling that gparted wont work either. does anyone know for fact that sdcard format has to be FAT?
Well once again I'm at my mom's, and her USB ports are screwed up, so I couldn't tel you what mine is formatted as.
Well i have multiple SDCards, but the one that is currently in my phone is formatted in FAT32 & I believe that was the one I used to root & flash the recovery originally...
Well this just seems impossible it seems ive hit a wall...
Im trying to use Fresh pre kitchen, but that wont work either because i have windows 7.
The Fresh Pre-kitchen works fine on Win7.

[Q] Problems with dual boot Phiremod/HC update, expanding sd card etc.

Can anyone help me out with updating the dual boot Phiremod/HC install?
My pc is a Windows 7 64-bit and I'm having absolutely no luck expanding the sd card to use the full 8GB.
Windows 7 and Easeus don't see the partitions, and Gparted does, but won't let me expand to include the free space (listed as unallocated).
I finally managed to mount the sd card via ADB, and have copied the phiremod update zip there, but when I try to install it, I get an error (bad) and after a restart, the file has vanished from the partition.
I'm very new at this, but can usually follow detailed instructions.
Here's what I did to update to 6.3:
Insert SD Card into my computer's card reader
Download EASUS Partition Manager (also using W7 64-bit)
Take the SD Card partition (#6 I believe) and extend it using the unallocated space left (mine was about 6Gb left on my 8Gb card)
Run the job in the partition manager
Throw SD Card and boot into Phiremod 6.2
connect to computer via USB and copy the 6.3 update to the SD Card
reboot in recovery, clear cache and dalvik cache (under advanced)
flash the 6.3 update zip
Mine hung at the android... screen for about 10min then I did a hard reboot and it fired up and has been working fine.
I was getting gmail force closes until I wiped cache and dalvik cache so I added that step in before flashing.
Let me know how it goes!
Ummm.... yeah, what he said above.

Thanks for the step by step instructions, but for me the buck stops at trying to extend the partition. Easus only sees the boot partition. Gparted shows all the partitions, but won't extend the sd partition. It looks like it should work (lets me drag the extender thingy), but when I apply the action, it reverts back to the original, with no error message. Just doesn't do it.
Should I start over and reformat the card?
It wouldn't hurt. Only thing you would lose are apps you've installed.
You could always use Titanium Backup for that though.
If you do reformat make sure you do a full format and not a "quick" one so no data is still lingering on the card.
Let us know how it goes!

Ah, do I need a usb micro sd card reader?
I only have a regular size sd card adapter for it.
And no, I didn't unmount the partition. I checked earlier, but there is no such option in the gparted menu, and I don't have much advanced partitioning knowledge.
A google search didn't help much.
Would appreciate if you could tell me how to do this!

It is preferred to use a micro sdcard reader. I assume you are using a Linux box or live CD with gparted. But there should definitely be a n option for you to unmount the partition. You will not be able to make any changes to mounted partitions.
Right click over the partition that you want to work with. It should give you a menu. And unmount should be one of the options.

Got a card reader and Easeus and Win 7 Disk Management can now see all the partitions.
No luck expanding the sd partition, though. The action seems to happen, but then everything reverts back to what it was originally.
No mount/unmount option anywhere to be found, not with Easeus, nor with Gparted or Win 7.
I'm out of ideas at this point and will reformat the card and start over.
Edited to add: Aaand I'm now having trouble doing *that*, too.
Tried it on the pc: no go.
Tried it on the Nook: it claimed the card was sucessfully formatted in about 1 sec, and then got stuck on that notice.
Waited 5 minutes, still stuck. Turned it off and back on, and Nook booted into Phiremod.
Any ideas how I can reformat this demon card?
Edited to add: Am now using a low level formatting tool and get "format error occurred at offset ...". The program is still running and seems to be formatting the rest of the card.
Does this sound like the sd card is damaged?
A couple other options for you to try:
SD Formatter 3.0 - Made specifically to format SD cards - http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Partition Wizard - This is the software I used to extend the SD Card partition. Really simple to use - http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html?tag=mncol;7
I would try formatting the SD card, reinstalling the dualboot image, the using Partition Wizard to extend the SD card partition.
As far as updating, I haven't tried the newest update the when I updated from 6.1 to 6.2 I plugged my Nook into my computer, dropped the update file onto the Nook's internal memory, then moved it to the SD card with the Root Explorer app.
Hope any of that helps. Good luck!

Thanks! I will give those a try, since everything was still on the card after the low level format.
Who knew that reformatting would be such a problem!
Did you have to unmount the sd partition, before extending it?
I extended the partition with Partition Wizard immediately after burning the dual boot image. Never messed with mounting or unmounting anything. I'm a little new to this myself really. Why would you need to mount the SD card partition?
I didn't think I had to, but racks11479 mentioned it as a possible solution in this thread, so I thought I'd ask.
None of the programs had any success in reformatting my card, so I returned it to the store and got a replacement.
Now I'm very ambivalent about trying again and possibly messing up another card.
Can anyone here think of anything that I might have done (or should have done) to cause the card to act this way?
And if anyone feels like posting a baby step guide for someone like me, I'd very much appreciate it!
Edited to add: I just found the following
*********
It also will produce a multi partition removable disk for which windows will not allow you to re-partition. If you want to get back to "normal" disk you can reformat it with Hewlett-Packard Company's HPUSBFW.exe
***********
Also, I used an old 2GB card to reformat my NC (went fabulously easy) and then reformatted that and tried a CM7 rom, which worked, but was way too slow. This reformatted again, without any problems, so I'm not sure if the above statement (regarding bootable sd cards) is correct or not.
And if anyone feels like posting a baby step guide for someone like me, I'd very much appreciate it!

New Nook

I received my new nook and updated it to the new software. Then i tried doing a backup via noogie. I got until the rooted forever screen and then got stuck. I couldn't get my mac to make a backup for me. I panic and gave up after awhile and just removed my SD card and reformatted it.
I am going to try to root it via the touchnooter method without doing a backup as I got too scared after my first experience with the noogie.
What I noticed is that when I wrote my SD card with noogie, I only got some space left to put in my books. My SD card is 8gb.
Is it okay to root my Nook and put books using the same SD? or should i partition my SD card into 2 via disk utility, then use 1gb for rooting and then 7gb for my books?
Or can they co-exist together?

You got it backwards, Noogie doesn't do anything to your NST
What you need to know is when your NST tries to boot it will first try to boot from the SD card, then the internal MMC.
Noogie does nothing but interrupt the boot and expose the internal MMC for you so you can replace files in it
For root with Noogie you need to have downloaded a uRamdisk that you'll use to replace the uRamdisk in the /boot partition.

No, not at all, when you're done using Noogie you should reformat your sdcard so you can use it as NST storage.

Do a backup, don't know on mac, but on windows its easy and very usefull if you screw, just read carefully and follow instructions.
If you root with touchnooter there is no need to use the Noogie image, and as Ros stated, you got it wrong.
Just follow instructions on the touchnooter thread, once you finished with the process format the card with sdformatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/eula_mac/)
Good luck.
okay, im officially confused. I am going to root with the touchnooter. But i want to do a backup too.
So i should backup with the noogie image, stop at here: "Mac/Linux:
dd if=/dev/<nook> of=nook_touch_backup.img bs=1M
This will take several minutes, and will create a 2GB file
After it is finished, double check and make sure the file is exactly 1958739968 bytes"
then what should i do from here? take my sd out and reformat it? then go onto the touchnooter?
PS. this was the part i was stuck at. i copied the backup command into my terminal. but my terminal/mac could not read it. Then i panic cos my screen was stuck at rooted forever. How?
Sorry. This is my first time rooting anything.
and i tried
Yes - you have the approach correct now. It is easier if you have extra SD's
Write the Noogie image to the SD
Backup (your nook is not yet rooted)
Take out the SD card - reboot the Nook (power cycle)
Write touchNooter image to the SD card
Follow its instructions and take out the SD card
Reboot the nook (power cycle)
Rooted!
If everything works then
Write the Noogie image to the SD
Boot with it in the Nook
Backup a second time so you have a rooted image.
Take it out and reboot again.
If you want to use the SD in the nook for content then reformat it and all the space will be available.

You should never just copy commands into your shell unless you know what they do
You need to substitute "if=/dev/<nook>" with the correct device path for your Nook. (I.E. if=/dev/sdb)
Boot with Noogie image (rooted forever), plug in usb and do a dmesg in the terminal to see what device name it got, it should be there amongst the last few lines.
And yes, the dd command will take a few minutes.
When it's done you remove the SD card and reboot your Nook.
As said earlier, the Noogie image doesn't do anything to your NST.
If you want to root your NST you need to know what software version you have and choose the appropriate rooting method for it, there are several, but in regards to Google Apps things are still somewhat unreliable when it comes to getting it to work on 1.1.0
Thanks for the help!! Much clearer now about the process. Will try it after my exams next week hopefully nothing goes wrong and the touchnooter will enable google apps to work by then

Are you using MacOS? check dd --help, maybe the blocksize parameter cannot use M for megabytes. You can try bs=1048576 instead.
for macos you have to use bs=1m not bs=1M that only for linux use

Can't boot from SD Card

I have a new-to-me Nook Color running the 1.4.2 firmware. I did a factory reset and set up my Barnes and Noble account. Yay me. However I can't FOR THE LIFE OF ME get it to boot off the SD card.
I've tried two 2GB cards (Samsung & SanDisk) and one 8GB SanDisk card. Also used three different card readers to burn the .IMG. What am I missing? I stick them in the Nook and the Nook just boots up as normal without hesitation. I've been rooting cell phones for years but this tablet has me stumped.
Is there another option I can use to flash CWM? Once I get it flashed I'm sure flashing the ROM is a breeze...
EDIT: After more and more digging, it might be an issue with writing to the wrong partition. How can I check to see if I'm installing to the write partition? I've formatted my cards multiple times. This is the stuff I see in a lot of answer posts:
of = /dev/disk# (good)
of = /dev/disk#p# (bad)

I have never successfully created an SD card that will boot on the Nook. Outside of the Nook, I have no way of testing to see if works or not.
You asked what partition, but I only have one partition on the card. If I open up the card in Disk Manager, there's just one allotment of space. When you burn the Image, is that supposed to create a separate partition that's visible in My Computer? If so, that's not happening because all the data is in one spot on the card (from what I can tell)
You need to flash the card. I suggest starting here:

or any of the other dev threads dealing with dual boots or whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.
Does your stock nook format sd cards to write books and such? If not that would be a big clue that it is a hardware issue

Yes, the stock Nook picks up the cards and formats them when installed. I've used these cards for all my smartphone rooting without any issues.
I've also formatted the cards and burned the CWM images using the windiskimager tool. It's just not bootable for some reason
The very first fundamentally step is to check whether it is a NOOKcolor or Nook Tablet.

Holy balls, I feel like an idiot. I had no idea the two were so similar. I am almost certain I have the Color (going by what it says on the case) but I'll look closely when I get home
It's the Nook Tablet. Wow....just...wow
On the bright side, at least my technical experience isn't the problem. My common sense on the other hand...
I believe you still can root the NT or run the pre-alpha ROM from it.
Unsure if it's able to run from uSD yet or not.
