Screen burn in? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to burn in the screen on the Nexus 10? Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 2

I think the preferred nomenclature for LCD displays is "image persistence". It's real but not something I'd worry about on a tablet unless you're running a single app with a lot of static elements and have the display active around the clock.

The way LCD screens work, you'd have to leave your screen on without interuption or movement for over a week to experience any issues. And then, 99% of the time, LCD image persistance can be removed simply by flushing your screen with color to reset the liquid crystals.

[Q] Can you see the screen matrix conductors??

Hi!
I'am so happy with my Nexus 4, but today when i was outside i noticed many "squares" on the screen when i tilted it a bit.
Can somebody in here reproduce this by going outside and carefully tilt the device whit the screen of and on?
Is this normal or should i return the phone?

You should definitely return it. It's clearly defective.
.../facepalm
I see them when my screen is off. Don't worry about it, they've been on all of my phones before my N4 as well.

I have never seen this before on any phone.
That's why i'am asking
They're only visible when Mine's off and I wouldn't worry about it unless they show up when the screen is on...

i noticed it on my nexus 4 as well. but i only see it when im outside in the sunlight and my screen is off. i dont see it all the time but at times when i tilt the phone i do see it. i figured it was just the way the screen was. it was no biggie to me
I saw mine while using it out in the sun. They are also clearly visible when the screen is off. How many threads do we need about this?

Do you see them under heavy sunlight? This might be the case. Normally, they shouldn't be seen. However, if I look extremely closely on a specific background colour (which I don't remember now) I can barely see them.
Unbelievable. Another thread about this.

Sv: [Q] Can you see the screen matrix conductors??
I returned my phone yesterday and got a new nexus 4. Whiteout the conductors showing on the screen! I bought it in Sweden on netonnet and they told me that these conductors should not be showing so much on the screen. I mean I could actually take a picture on the conductors!

[Q] Lines in the screen

Good morning,
I have a strange issue with my phone. Rev 11, build number 0302k. I have lines on my screen that resemble something that looks like a plasma screen when you are too close to the TV. They are vertical lines and appear for bright colors like whites. I'm on cm10.1 using Franco kernel r93.
Anyone see these lines or am I crazy? Lol
Thanks.
It's the LCD matrix, nothing to worry about
Unless it's something else, of course...
Yeah, I guess it's the pixels. Just didn't ever notice them.
I get them as well. I think it happens when you hold up your phone at a certain angle.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
They are especially visible when going form a dark screen to light. Like a dark app to gmail which is mostly white.
I only see the lines when my screen is off and I hold the phone at a certain angle.
I don't see them while the screen is on.

Screen burn?

I've had my Nexus 4 for about 3 months now, and I'm starting to have a serious issue with image persistence on the screen. As of recently it has gotten very bad, and when I browse Chrome for 5 minutes, and flick the tab away, revealing the brown-grey screen, I can see the URL bar along with the URL address burnt on to the screen. It seems to go away after a while, but actually if I turn the brightness up to maximum and look it is still there. Does anyone else suffer from this same problem?
I haven't yet but I'd say get Screen test set it to the white test setting set your phone to not turn off screen when charging an leave over night that might help clear the screen burn. I haven't had this issue on any of my androids.
Simply; yes. I think that's a bit more widespread issue than one could think.
What I have noticed is it eventually does clear. But it seems to be taking longer and longer to do so. Right now (it has been about 30 minutes) the URL bar and the address has gone, but there is still a white patch where they were. I've read about IPS-LCD image persistence, but most sites say it clears after about two minutes.
zero burn in here, ive have mine for about a month. how bright do you keep your screen?
Yea, for me it's just like 2 - 4 minutes and the burn is gone.
I have auto-brightness on most of the time, typically it ranges from the lowest setting, to about the middle setting. When I'm in the house I turn off auto-brightness. I've just checked again and it is still there, that's almost an hour now. I haven't been using it either, it's been in sleep, but I have been periodically checking it.

How long have you had the phone for?
I've had it since Christmas.
Haven't got that on mine - if I were you I'd send it back under warranty and Google or LG should should send you a replacement if its a defect in the screen

Huh, I thought LCD screens could not be "burned in".
Interesting (and no, I haven't seen it on mine).
Yeah I don't see this problem, and I thought this was an issue with AMOLED screens and the like
One thing that annoying me on my nexus 4. You can see on the left of my screen, straight dark line from top to bottom. I haven't drop my nexus before. It appeared on dark colours especially grey colours. For your info its start to appeared when 10 minutes screen on after about 20 minutes screen off. Is it normal? Anyone here have the same problem?

I exchanged mine for the same type of screen defect. It's definitely a defect. My new one is perfect..
I dont think that lcd screen has this issue. My galaxy nexus has screen burn in and it is very awful

This isn't screen burn in, it is called "Transient Image Persistence" and it is not permanent like the AMOLED burn in... this thing dissapears relatively fast but it's still annoying... I have the same problem.

The problem is though I have had it since the end of December. Would they still accept it? Like I said in the OP though it seems to be getting worse, before the image would at least go away. But now it seems to have retained it permanently.

Yeah I also have this problem, I have a couple of vertical lines running up my screen, they are only visible if I turn it to full brightness, and have it on a grey background though.

By perfect do you mean it doesn't retain the image at all, or that it fades relatively quick? I wouldn't mind if it went after like a minute or two, but mine seems to never go away.

Yeah I mentioned that in the OP. The problem is though mine has still not faded. I basically have a permanent Chrome URL box at the top of my screen, with a sort of white mark around it. If I have used chrome recently it becomes fully visible at any brightness. But if I leave it for a few hours it is only fully visible at maximum brightness.

By 'perfect' I mean I don't have a single vertical line, ever, and no image retention at all.

Nice founding..related to voltage..for your info it actually start happened when I'm using franco kernel and UV -150mv..maybe this cause of this problem? Will try to run solid white image for hours to cure it..

I'm on full stock, and not rooted. Like I said I have already looked at that online, but it is supposed to disappear after a few minutes. Mine is retained for hours, actually it hasn't went away since I've noticed it, so it's pretty much permanent.

Burnt screen image

Anyone else notice that the statusbar got burnt into the screen? Like when I rotate to watch a YouTube video I notice at the top of my phone the color is off a bit. So does anyone else notice this?

Considering the S4 uses OLED it's definitely a concern that a image could end up burned in. However, it's unlikely if you keep your brightness at a moderate amount opposed to max all the time and have the notification bar hide itself during normal operation. I've had my phone for several months and still haven't had any issues with image burn... but it really depends on the amount of usage I suppose.

If I knew it had a chance of doing it I would have had the status bar turn off. But now its useless, its jot 100% noticeable, when I watch a YouTube video the color is just slights off, noticeable if you're look for it. But it just sucks that its doing that, along with my sides of my screen are coming loose. I don't know. I use my phone a lot as its my means of everything. I use it more than my laptop.

You might be able to get a refurb thru warranty for the screen burn in...not positive but id assume that you could
But yeah, any oled screen (just about every samsung phone) is at risk of screen burn ins

[Q] Image Retention

Hi i have the phone about 10 days, and noticed some image retention in grey background, the most in the nav bar keys.
I run this test
http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html
For 5 minutes with max bright and when i change to grey i noticed the image retention.
Any more have this problem or i need to change my cellphone ?
Any can test this please ?
It's the nature of the beast. Our LCD displays are immune to burn in caused by phosphor wear, but they are susceptible to image retention.
This applies to LCD televisions as well. AMOLED screens on the other hand (think Samsung) can suffer (and do) from phosphor wear leaving a permanent ghosted image behind. Luckily for us we can usually get rid of any image retention issues by turning the display off and leaving it off for 24-48 hours.
I have heard of extremely rare cases where the image was reportedly "retained" permanently but I've never witnessed this first hand.

So, this is normal ??? I dont see the image retention in normal use. Only if i put a grey background i can see the softkeys, but if i play a game or see a movie i see nothing.
Or i have a defective screen and i need to change in the warranty ???
Thank you !

I wouldn't consider it normal if it happens often with normal usage, but it's a common temporary issue for PLASMA and LCD displays/tvs.
For example, you could get the CNN crap at the bottom temporarily impregnated onto the TV display.
Now if the images doesn't fade away after the screen has been off for a while then no I wouldn't consider that normal.

I dont see in normal usage, only when i run the test or use the phone more than 10 minutes and then put a grey background, i can see the softkeys like a watermark. But only in grey backgrounds.
Sounds like harmless transient image persistence. If I leave my display on the page you linked for a good amount of time the same happens to me.

You should it's not just the optical illusion you're seeing after looking at that page? Cause no after 2 minutes all I see is the optical illusion messing with my eyes until they adjust.

In two minutes of this page with max brightness i have image retention, that dissapears in some seconds and only visile in grey background.
Doesn't sound like an issue to me
