what is cyanogenmod ? how it differs from custom rom? - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and Duos 6102 Q&A, Help & Troubl

what can we do with cyanogenmod?

Roms based on stock (that is 2.3.6 GB) are mere unzip/re zip of stock Samsung files with added scripts/tweaks also modded systemui/apps and themed to the liking of rom chef . Cyanogen mod is also a custom Rom in the sense that it is not a factory made image but it differs from others in the fact that it is built ground up from aosp vanila android source code.

i suggest u to use search button or google for such topics....
cyanogenmod is the aftermarket version of an android os....
like for gingerbread 2.3.7 their is cm7 and for ics their is cm9

cyanogenmod is basically a custom rom built from original android sources from AOSP.

[Q] Pure stock Android for EVO.

Is there a stock 2.2/2.3 ROM that is compatible with the EVOs hardware? I want it as pure as possible, but at the same time have all of the hardware working.
2.3 - huh? 2.2? No -- CM6.1 RC1 is the closest and it wont support 4G / HDMI until 6.1.1.
Yea there is one in the android development forum. Called dev aosp rom. Its stock froyo with no custom modifications.

This is a link to the rom keep in mind that some items do not work and it is a dev rom.

[Q] Cyanogen & Kernals

Newb question that I couldn't find the answer to.
Since CyanogenMod is AOSP and Stock is Sense:
Does the current version of CyanogenMod (v7.x) download files contain changes to the kernal?
If not, will Cyanogen v7.x run stable with the Stock HTC kernal?
I want to try out Cyanogen v7 but due to work I need to be able to flip back to Stock rooted for stability if needed. I just want to know if I'll need to worry about flashing the kernal too when flipping back and forth.
Thanks....
Any ROM comes packaged with an appropriate kernel once flashed. There are alternatives but the stock Cyanogen kernel is pretty boss on its own.
Yes cm7 contains its own aosp kernel.
No sense kernels will not work on aosp roms.
Every rom comes with its correct kernel.no need to flash one unless you want to.

Thanks for the reply.
Will be giving the latest cyanogen RC a try tonight.
And, as I just read, the Nand backup covers the kernal, I wont have to worry about separatly flashing the kernal back to stock if I need to restore.
Somewhere I got the idea that the ROM and Kernal were separate flashes.
Thanks....
Not sure about anyone else, but cyanogenmod included kernel for me has been pretty much 100% stable for me. I didn't get any restarts until I started flashing other kernals and some mods.

[Q] cm10 and miui

I know two different forks of miui v4 on the dev section - JIUI and WIUI. Since they seem to be based on cm10 only, I would request the respective rom devs to make flash-able zips or some guides to convert cm10 into miui v4, iff possible. It will have numerous benefits:
1) We will have to download smaller files.
2) The developer wouldn't have to make separate 2ndboot or linaro builds. As I see right now, Wajk hasn't implemented 2ndboot at all and JIUI doesn't seem to be linaro version. I know many people don't like linaro but there should be an option.
3) This would reduce the devs work too as he wouldn't always have to update his rom when quarx releases a new cm10.
So all in all I hope for a positive reply from Wajk and Janeindiran
It's not possible as far as I know, because both miui and jiui are not using the latest cm10 as base(heavily modified) and the custom kernel implementation seems to work for only older kernels. I don't think this will happen

[Q] Custom kernel/swap on CM7 based roms.

It is possible to have custom kernel with existing CM7 based rom like WIUI or MIUI (especially wiui), that supports swap function? I know that is implemented in last JB roms but they are too slow on my opinion. Yet.
Even if you could get it to work, you're forgetting that swap is slower and can cause secondary performance bottlenecks.
I think that maniac's build has custom kernel, but doesn't have swap support

Yeah Thanks Custom Roms are really cool... So I worked on it because I hate LGs User Interface...
So I made a Rom on Maclaw`s AOSP and I think it will be good enough for daily use. It has a few bugs but it isn`t very important.
You can use Suxsem Android 4.0 Kernel and it will be great You can download it tomorrow! I hope hat you will not brick your device while flashing. I prefer to wipe and Format everything but emmc and sdcard. Then you mount system in cwm and flash the Rom and you will geht a fresh installed AOSP Vanilla Android 4.0 Whats your ROM? Can I download it anywhere? I take everything but Android Kang Project Unicorn and MIUI
Yeah you can find it in android development section here..the name is Iphonoid...the current version now is 2.0 but i will upload soon the 3.0 (one for sdmerge users and one for sdmerge non-users) with new features
