[Q] Cyanogen & Kernals - EVO 4G General

Newb question that I couldn't find the answer to.
Since CyanogenMod is AOSP and Stock is Sense:
Does the current version of CyanogenMod (v7.x) download files contain changes to the kernal?
If not, will Cyanogen v7.x run stable with the Stock HTC kernal?
I want to try out Cyanogen v7 but due to work I need to be able to flip back to Stock rooted for stability if needed. I just want to know if I'll need to worry about flashing the kernal too when flipping back and forth.
Thanks....

Any ROM comes packaged with an appropriate kernel once flashed. There are alternatives but the stock Cyanogen kernel is pretty boss on its own.

Yes cm7 contains its own aosp kernel.
No sense kernels will not work on aosp roms.
Every rom comes with its correct kernel.no need to flash one unless you want to.

Thanks for the reply.
Will be giving the latest cyanogen RC a try tonight.
And, as I just read, the Nand backup covers the kernal, I wont have to worry about separatly flashing the kernal back to stock if I need to restore.
Somewhere I got the idea that the ROM and Kernal were separate flashes.
Thanks....

Not sure about anyone else, but cyanogenmod included kernel for me has been pretty much 100% stable for me. I didn't get any restarts until I started flashing other kernals and some mods.

Flashing Kernel on Stock Help

Hello XDA,
I have been searching around but can't find anything relative to my experiences.
I have tried flashing many different kernels on top of my rooted stock 2.2 and I always end up with a boot loop of the HTC logo.
I was wondering if there is a way to flash a different kernel and have it function properly. I want to be able to overclock and install a patch from the call recording app in the DEV section. A link to reading material would suffice or any help would be appreciated.
Info:
Stock 2.2 rooted
Tmobile G2
Thanks again

You could try using a Virtuous kernel, I'm not sure if they will work on stock though.
Here's a link to some kernels.
You should really install a custom rom though if you want performance.

Thanks for the reponse. I was using CM7 and loved it, but I really need my call recording to work and it was very intermittent with CM7.
I got it working properly on stock now by installing baconbits 0.3 then flashing the kernel and for some reason it worked.
If you have any suggestions as to a "stockish" type rom, I'm open to it.

Virtuous Sense is based off the official updates from HTC, only optimized and touched up a bit.

Wanting to upgrade to Gingerbread

Hello Everyone,
I have become bored of Cyanogen now and believe it would be better to run the stock ROM with a OC kernel,
Is it possible to run stock gingerbread with a OC kernel,
or
would I have to stick with my froyo backup at the moment and a OC kernel.
Any opinions also welcome
Also which kernel is best?
Thanks a lot!!
I don't get what you mean by "Stock Gingerbread". There is no such thing for the Wildfire, and, probably, there never will be. This thus only leaves you with an option to restore your Froyo Backup and use an OC Kernel with it. For a Sense ROM Kernel, look at nFinity MC4 from here:

Thanks for advice, appreciated! Also is there a gingerbread custom rom which is almost the same as stock gingerbread
Thanks very, very much!
Any AOSP ROM (This includes Cyanogenmod 7) is a "Stock" ROM. If you are looking for completely Stock, then have a look at DevNull.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139259
And if by Stock, you mean one with HTC Sense, then, the choice is limited to only SFM, which is incomplete, and it seems the project is shelved, with even emanilio not working on it anymore because of the loss of his Wildfire

Sorry to be a pain, is it possible for a guide of how to flash a kernel, I am worried something will go wrong
The process is the same as it is to flash a ROM. Place kernel file on SDCard > Go to Clockworkmod Recovery > Install Zip from SDCard > select Kernel zip.

tell me roms with stock kernel, please

Hello!, I would like put rom, but in stock kernel, don't custom kernel.
I have GingerDX
There are more roms?
Thanks you very much!
All Froyo ROMs, and all GingerDX based ones. There was a try to get ICS to stock, but it won't be fully functional.
There is a huge list.
Visit the Android Development section for ROMS for stock kernel.
Thanks.
Atifloyo is good?

[Q] Stay on Eclair or go to Froyo?

Hi! A friend left me his Defy so I could so I can put it on steroids as it's working really slow. It's still on Android 2.1 (Vodafone Spain) and never touched. I've read all the necessary stuff for beginners and understood everything (I'm not new to rooting and flashing, I've a fully hacked Desi), but I want to know a few things.
First of all, should I stay on 2.1 as base or is it better to upgrade to Froyo, in which case what is the preferred SBF?
As this is for a friend and I'm not gonna have access to his phone everyday I need a really stable rom. Are the latest CM roms stable enough?
And at last, I've read that some of this roms come with the kernel, what does that mean?
Thanks in advance for all the info.
1) You can upgrade to Froyo, or stay as it is(will not really affect performance) although people report Froyo to be a bit smoother
2)CM7 is very stable and fast( you may use maniacs or other builds)
3)I think you are referring to the 2ndboot ROMs which include a custom kernel. Though I personally use them, they may not be stable/fast enough for everyone
I would suggest trying cm7,9,10 and check how it works out for you

Yes, isn't that 2ndboot thing necessary to be able to boot any custom rom? So now if I would like to install a custom rom I should (update to Froyo,) root, install 2nd init and then flash the rom and recover the nandroid for that build?

Yes that's right, but what nandroid do you mean? Usually you don't have to recover nandroid. For CM7,9,10 you should just flash .zip from cwm. For ms2ginger you have to follow the instructions in op (there you have to use a nand backup)

No, there are ROMs without custom kernel as well. Cm7 and all miui builds are based on stock kernel ( all GB ROMs). JB is available in both, so is ICS, and only a couple of ROMs are nandroid backups, rest are zips. Remember to wipe data as well while flashing builds

If Froyo is officially deployed in your area and carrier go for it

Ok, so now I'm into work. I've already rooted and installed 2init. Nest step is to install a custom rom but I can't decide from this three: Epsylon3's CM9.1 Android 4.0.4, [email protected]'s CM10 Moto Ice Gun Edition or Quarx's CM10 Android 4.1.2. What would you recommend if looking for stability?

Sorry, as you see in the sticky in this very section, asking which is ROM is best in any category (stability, speed, whatever) is strictly against forum rules. Thanks for your cooperation.

[Q] Help with ROM

As you guys may know, I recently downloaded the latest matriz mod by mathkid...do you think I need a ROM installed to use at its full potential? If so, which ROM should I install and do I have to re-install the kernel?
1. U don't have to flash another ROM if you are on stock ROM or another AOSP ROM
2. Feel free to flash any ROM u want all AOSP based Ron's should work with this kernel.
3. If u flash another ROM u have to flash the kernel again because the stock kernel of the ROM will be flashed as well.
BTW. Post this kind of questions into the Q&A forum for the N4.

So I'm on Stock ROM right now. I don't need to redo the installation process and just flash it at will? Didn't know you can flash multiple roms too...
what roms do you guys recommend with the most with matr1x kernel?

matrix is not a rom, it is a kernel. all roms include kernels, or your phone would never work. all you do is flash matrix over what you have now, and itll replace your current kernel with matrix. that is all, do not over think it, do not make it more complicated then it actually is. and no, no one can tell you what rom to run, it is only your personal choice and no one elses. there are roms in the development section, read their threads, then you decide.

I know matrix is a kernel, I'm saying which one would be the most appropriate to go with it. One more question: Whenever there's an android update and I have flashed a Rom and Kernel, do I have to redo the flashing process again? ex. Android 4.4.4
