[Q] Custom kernel/swap on CM7 based roms. - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It is possible to have custom kernel with existing CM7 based rom like WIUI or MIUI (especially wiui), that supports swap function? I know that is implemented in last JB roms but they are too slow on my opinion. Yet.

Even if you could get it to work, you're forgetting that swap is slower and can cause secondary performance bottlenecks.
I think that maniac's build has custom kernel, but doesn't have swap support

Need info about kernel in android!!

I just want to confirm that in android, both kernel and OS (custom/stock ROM) can be flashed in a phone separately. Just asking as I am surprised to know this fact about android and this is not possible in computer operating systems like windows or mac as these OSes, kernel is integrated with OS and you cannot change them as in android.

Afaik the OS runs on top of the kernel. So, whether it is a phone or a PC, if the kernel is compiled with the specific hardware modules it can be changed separately from the OS. I don't know how to do it in windows but have tried it in Ubuntu!

can you reinstall kernel in ubuntu without reinstalling/formatting OS?

You can compile the Linux kernel according to your needs (add patches, filesystem support, power management tweaks, etc) and then boot from there! But the kernel will boot only if it is compiled for the OS version (or firmware when referring to phones) and certain hardware you want it to use. That is why a galaxy 3 froyo kernel for example runs only on a galaxy 3 and (except CM6) any froyo version (JPS, JPU, JPF...).

Thanks panos. can you please let me know, in which scenarios we want to flash kernel and in which scenarios we want to flash custom ROM?

You choose a custom rom if you are not satisfied with stock. Most custom roms have their own modded kernel. If you want more features you can flash another kernel which has the functions you want. Now if you are happy with stock rom feel and looks but want overclock for example, then you get to choose one of the kernels which suits you.

So, basically for look and feel, we choose ROM that suits us and for features and performance improvements, we choose different kernel other than stock one...Am I correct?
Basically yes. Some tweaks like JIT are part of the rom, not the kernel but performance is a kernel issue!

[Q] ICS MIUI for Defy+ (GB Kernel)

Ok, I think the title is clear enough but, I'd like to know if there are any MIUI ROMs for the Motorola Defy Plus with a 2.3 (GB) Kernel. Thing is, I have Quarx's CM9 on Multiboot but I'd love to try ICS MIUI on it, but I understand I have to flash Froyo Kernel but don't know what would that do to my CM9 I'm so in love with.
I've searched all the threads on xda and the web but I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for.
Thanks!
Unfortunately Currently there is no miui build that works on gb kernel.

Thanks for the reply! Is there another rom that I should try? I don't really know about another interface for 4.0 but it would surely be great if there were one.
Edit: I have another question, is there a way to install a froyo kernel on multiboot so i can keep cm9 (GB) on my default boot? I already have multiboot but I'm not sure if flashing wiui, for example, will damage the other rom.
Look at the miui ics thread by sesme

Well as far as I know multi boot requires same kernel for the roms. I don't know if any recent development has changed it. You may check multi boot thread.

[Q] Does a custom Rom come with a Kernel?

Does a custom Rom come with a Kernel?
My specific case :
Nexus 7 32Gb Wifi
Android 4.1.2
Rom : PA 2.54
Kernel : Franco 3.1.10
My plan is to update to PA 2.99Beta6 which is based on Android 4.2.
I'd like to know if I'll also need to flash a new kernel as part of the upgrade process or if the PA 2.99Rom also includes the required kernel.
My guess is that it will be included with the Rom but figured it wouldn't do any harm to ask.
PMSL, how on earth do you think a ROM would actually work otherwise without a kernel.
Sorry but.... #facepalm

My fear was that a Rom might use or expect the stock kernel, cheers for the answer though.
With that in mind, I wonder why Roms don't tend to ship with custom kernels. Franco's seems to be widely preferred to stock.

most roms that are actually developed ship with custom kernels(like cm for example). roms that are just compiled from aosp source that have some mods added usually use the default android kernel(or stock roms with added mods). also, many roms ship with other custom kernels included. anyways, many others prefer trinity kernel

Sorry I may have picked up on your question wrong, but many developers, well in fact most would use custom kernels, some prefer stock, stock kernels are generally very stable but quite limited in what they can do, for example take the pretty amazing Siyah on Galaxy S3 which gives you the ability to dual boot different ROM, s, i had AOSP as my main ROM and a Samsung ROM as my secondary ROM which was great for a while but they novelty wore off for me as I really only used the AOSP ROM, not to mention over clocking , etc, etc, etc.
I use Trinity Seven kernel on the Nexus and i find that the tablet seems to charge faster than with the CM kernel that comes with Liquid Smooth ROM.
Hope that answers some of your questions anyway

Is it worth to flash CM9/10 based ROMs on our X8?

Hi, my question is if it worth flash CM9/10 based roms on our lowend device. If it is smooth and bugless as CM7 ROMs. I tried CM9 long time ego but it was horrible so I'm asking now.
Thanks
If your concern is stability, CM is much more stable than when it sounds like you last tried it. Some nightlies might be better than others, but I personally would not hesitate to daily-drive CM10 at this point.

I've been using CM10 nighlies since nAa released the .32 kernel.
Now at version 4 of this kernel my system is way faster than even FroyoPro..
Here's a couple of screenies to show you.

Worthy or not worthy. It's the matter of personal taste.

[Q] What's the best rom for gaming and multi tasking?

I used dzo's oxygen a lot and it was pretty good and then i also wanted to try his aurora but it's not that fast for gaming and multi tasking. Is there a rom that you'd suggest using for me? There are different miui roms and such and i can't decide what to install. I don't care about bugs such as tethering, bluetooth etc. as long as wifi is ok btw.
Go back to oxygen or ezet's cm7. You need to downgrade to .32 kernel first.

Our better yet OEX rom
Best rom in my opinion are CM 7.2 by ezet and Aurora by dzo.
You can try both one is GB and other ICS and you can see yourself each rom is best suited to your U8800 because for each phone is different.
