GTA Vice city running slow? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my nexus 4 today, so I decided to test it's performance by downloading GTA Vice city and i noticed it is running very laggy! under 20 fps even.. It's constantly like that. I've also tested the game on a Galaxy s2 and I did not notice any slow downs at all! It even ran very smooth, on the galaxy s2 it ran on medium so I switched to medium on the nexus 4 as well, I wasn't satisfied with the results it kept lagging for some reason!! Is my phone defected? because I read the description of GTA Vice city on the play store, It stated the the game was also tested on a LG Nexus 4.
Any suggestions?

Galaxy S2 runs the game with lower resolution textures so that's why it may be running smoother.
On the other hand, I agree with you regarding Nexus 4's performance. It runs the game on medium settings at like 25fps, which is playable but not really what I expected. The biggest problem is thermal throttling as it forces the CPU to run much slower than it is capable of.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

Any chance you can link the play store to what game you are running just to make sure I am testing the right one?
I haven't heard of many problems with gaming .... Maybe the game doesn't like 4.2?
Sent from my Nexus 4

I'm running with all settings maxed and only a couple times my fps gets awful but its mostly smooth. Try tuning back the draw distance.

[Q] Nexus 4 Gaming

Hey there, I was just wondering why game on Nexus 4 is more lagging compeer with Galaxy S3 (NFS MW12, GTA Vice City) and have less effects again compeer with G3 (Modern Combat 4)?? :fingers-crossed:
*compare
And it might be an issue with your phone. I experience zero lag while gaming. Also, search a term called "thermal throttling"
It may have less effects as developers are still finding it difficult to get their hands on one. Once they do, I expect them to test it with full effects and update as appropriate

I hope that's true as after watching a comparison between the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 I am sure Nexus 4 can handle the graphics.

[Q] nexus 4 performance:? and question before buying this phone

im going to but a phone in 1 month but my current choice is nexus 4 but can anyone tell me about your or... nexus 4 performance? and if u can give me games fps? and should i worry about nexus 4 getting old because almost 1 year ago from this phones announce
and does games graphics change in devices (like dark night rises or nova 3 graphics is same on nexus 4 and htc one:?)
I use PA rom with Semaphore kernel and got 21500 on Antutu (not oc). I play now D-Day without any problem. Very smooth.

Performance is brilliant, the Adreno 320 really is a great GPU. You won't find any frame drops because normally it'll remain at almost 60FPS unless thermal throttling is having an effect. The Nexus 4 is nowhere near a year old, dunno where you got that from. It's been just over 7 months since announcement, 6 from the actual release. Certain apps may have 'Tegra 3' enhancements but they're unnoticeable and if you really want them there are some tweaks you can perform to get them. As for the games you mentioned I think the graphics should be the same across all devices.
and battery life in normal use: ever 2 days (3 hours 40m screen)
1 day 12 hours (5hrs screen)
thanks all im going to buy this anyway Google I/O is tommorow i realized if any nexus coming this year it most be tomorrow and thanks a lot!!!
oh and if i overclock it (if) how hot it gets? if u have done and does overclocking decrease phone life? if yes how much:?
i had sensation and i over clocked it to 1.8 for fun just a while my hands got bruned and turned red i redected speed to 1.5!
trust me, nexus 4 is the fastest phone you ever had. no lags at games, totally great multitasking, flawless playing of HD video..
Mine is so fricken fast that I have smoke coming out of it!

Nexus phones aren't usually announced at Google IO, normally there announced quite late in the year.

I would get the N4, unless you can wait 6 months for the new one to release. nothing beats the $337 in US with tax and shipping.
thanks i saw a lot of movies in my phone
i will get the n4 ^_^
even if new nexus announce in 6 months i will sell it
anyway i had a note-n7000 it was dualcore 1.4 it was completely horrible even weren't able to load its own touchwis it lag a lot and also had a lot of problems while my sensation whitout over cloack(1.2) had no problem and were running n.o.v.a 3 and ashphalt whitout any problem or lags but just load some apps slowly
wow i also saw notification Led can change colur its too cool

anyway as im going to buy this soon can u give me some good roms
Of course I can, good ROMs are all here
i mean best theres almsot mroe than 50 roms! and my net is limited and speed is 25kb! so can download one only
Paranoid Android is the best one, IMHO
Also the N4 is going to smoke your Sensation and Note together.
I went from the Galaxy S3 to Nexus 4 and the speed increase is amazing, double the Antutu score and feels way less laggy than my T999

Note 2 vs Note 3 - real world performance

I bought the note 3 to replace the note 2.
I have not yet sold the note 2 and have been testing both phones simultaneously to determine for myself if the upgrade is worth it.
Note 2 setup: stock ( leaked android 4.3) , a few apps installed
Note 3 setup: stock (Android 4.3), same apps as installed on note 2
Benchmarks Apps:
Note 3 beats Note 2 in all I have tried.
Real world use/Apps:
I have run several applications (multiple times ). Some are .....
Browers: chrome, default browser,
Snote
Gmail
Youtube
Speedtest
maps
Camera
Google now
etc...
In several cases, the note 2 is slightly faster than note 3 ( yes, this is not a typo)
Not by much...... but note 2 in "real world use/applications" seems ever so slightly faster than note 3.
In multi-tasking/split window, I run CPU-Z side by side with the chrome browser.
This was to monitor the 4 cpu cores during browser benchmarks.
I tried the following browser benchmark tests....
1. browsermark - rightware.com
2. sunspider
In both tests, the note 2 out-performed the note 3. -----------update: {may have been due to thermal throtling}
I have searched the net and surprisingly, no one else seems to have noticed/reported this.
Can someone else with both phones verify this?
note 3: SM-N900 ( 1.9Ghz) - Octa-core
note 2: GT-N7100 (1.6Ghz) - Quad-core
Update:
I've run the online browser benchmarks a couple more times after some hours of rest.
Sunspider 1.0 scores {firefox}:
note 2: [ 664.4ms]........note 3: [ 414.8ms]
Benchmarks are consistently showing note 3 as faster than note 2.
Real world use shows little to no difference.
I don't think that a few seconds make a difference between two smartphones as daily driver. So I don't think the note 3 is worth the upgrade at least for what I heard. Thanks for sharing!

I dont have the Note 3, but I have just seen a video of the "famous" LG G2, with the S800, running some top games with FPS meter enabled, and I'm proud to say than my "old" Note 2 has the same performance, and in some games is even better! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16TAbUkAHlU
Benchmarks are the most useless thing that happened to mobile phones. And you can prove it with your own Note 2. Flash an AOSP rom and run a benchmark like 3DMark, you'll get a better result than in stock TouchWiz. So, this means that games should run better on AOSP, right? Then run some game. They will lag WAY more on AOSP roms than in stock roms. Benchmarks aren't a good indicator of anything.
In conclusion, I think phone specs are evolving, that's for sure, but the improvement between generations, like Note 2 -> Note 3, are little in terms of performance, it's not worth the huge amount of money they cost.
Maybe most apps are optimized for 720p rather than 1080p.

Thats so interesting. .I wouldnt ever expect that and first time hearing it. No i feel a sense to apprach note 3 performance suspected.
If you proove this with a video screenshots and some benchmark test you would do a revolution i guess..

More and more I believe that with top of the line smartphones like these, upgrading is necessary only every two years. I had the S2 before this and it's really when I began to feel the slouch in newer games that I decided to upgrade.

I have stored worrying about benchmarks because all people say is the phones cheat the score. I would rather see just see real world performance. And like a PC a higher clock speed and more cores does not mean better performance.

note 2 to 3 not compelling upgrade
very useful, thanks.
I was considering upgrading when Note 3 prices fall, maybe early 2014. But now I am far from sure especially with Samsung's stupid region locking.
Reasons to upgrade:
IR emitter for TV remote control. Vaguely useful, perhaps in bars and restaurants when their TVs are turned up too loud so's I can turn them off or down!
USB3. Possible good for faster charging off computer and occasionally dumping in a load of music files.
802.11ac. Maybe I'll upgrade one day at home?
Display. Reports suggest it's easier to read outdoors.
Reasons I was considering not upgrading:
Note2 can support all the note3 software. We just have to wait for Samsung to release it. Or androiders to kang the note3 rom.
Am happy with 720p display. I have quite good eyesight, with corrected vision (short sighted) and I never feel my Note2 needs more pixels on the screen. A better sensor in the camera for low light would be nice but the camera is good for casual shots.
Camera already good enough.
NFC antenna. I like the NFC antenna not being part of the battery so I can use Anker third party battery which gives as good as OEM battery.
S-Pen already good enough fine. I got used to the only minor nuisance that the off-screen capacitive buttons couldn't sense the pen.
CPU already fast enough.
802.11ac wifi. I don't have anything which supports super high speed wifi. I'd end up buying an 11ac access point, then would want to upgrade my laptop wifi card too.
Besides, 802.11a/n is faster than my broadband at home. And at work we don't even have 802.11a.
I too have the Note 2 (international) and the AT&T Note 3... I can say that if you don't have an upgrade available it definitely IS NOT worth paying full retail price for the phone. I signed a new 2 year agreement to get it for $288.88 and I can turn around and sell my Note 2 for $350-400 easily making my money back...
The pros with the Note 3 are that the screen is absolutely beautiful! Besides the S4 this is the most amazing screen I have ever seen with my own eyes. Next, comes the software. There's a lot of new small changes that make things easier to use, however most of these things will be coming to a Note 2 via an update. If you're into aesthetics then this device looks more "premium" over a Note 2 and I almost don't want to cover it with a case.
As far as performance goes, you can notice it slightly. Apps open faster, but it could be due to the increase in screen sensitivity also. TouchWiz eats up over 1 gig of ram leaving a little more than 1 gig free for user apps. On my note 2 with my custom rom I would use about 600mb of ram leaving a litle more than 1 gig free also. No improvements here.
Some buggy things I've noticed so far is that my text vibration is very weak compared to others such as email. Also every app gives me a vibration alert even if I turned it off.
There's a lot of bloat on here even for a carrier phone. Most of it is from Samsung it seems.
Besides the few "pros" I see with the Note 3, I would not recommend anyone to purchase it over a Note 2 unless you have an upgrade you can use. Especially an AT&T one with a locked bootloader, which forces you to keep all these useless apps running on your phone.

this very well note 3, but I see exorbitant price
There is nothing worth here to give up $450 to trade in my Note II ($850-$400), mine is so fast and so optimised for my needs that will skip the Note 3 for the next one, for me that's the end of the story.

[Q] SGS 2 & SGS 3 Performance differences

Sorry for bad english
Hi guys!I gotta one question about performance for games on SGS 2 and SGS 3 for those people who had both phones.
Is Samsung Galaxy S 3 so much better and faster when running new and HD games?
Which phone uses more RAM?
I gotta feeling that SGS 2 is more stable because of RAM...Is that true?
P.S I am going to buy one of those 2 phones and I love playing games,so that is the reason I posted this question.
Hey there.I'm not a HD Games player but I'm a former S2 user and actual S3 user and I can say the S3 is much better. Even with 4.3 update ram ussage is good,no lag.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Agree with poster above.
Btw 4.3 update made even bigger difference between those two. SGS3 got 50% bump in performance and know one thing: unused RAM is wasted RAM. That means,no matter how full your RAM is,phone should be always stable. I always have to 100 mb free when multitasking and phone is as fast as it should be (+6 and more apps).
Galaxy S3 all the ways.
One question though, why do you and buy a phone which is kind of dead already? I don't deny the fact that s2 was a great phone but it's too old now. Go for a s3, it has better dev support
I hav got both S2 and S3..but ill say one thing abt hd gaming, if u planning for playing games then go for s3 as because it has more better config than s2..but on s2, asphalt 8 runs smooth as butter and better than s3.. but with other games such as gta san andreas, zero hour, dead trigger, etc, s3 performs much better..so go for s3.

[Q] Note 4 Lag on GTA SanAndreas ?

I have been really waiting to buy the Note 4 since months. I didn't buy the LG G3 mainly due to it's poor performance on the QHD display. Just came across this video on YouTube of Note 4 playing the GTA sanandreas and now I am starting to get a bit skeptical about it's performance. Just hope the game might have not been optimized for Note 4 yet ??
Here is the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ4WgowL3Ls
Here is an interesting article that explains about the poor gaming peformance of Note 4. According to this article, iPhone 6/6 Plus is superior and miles ahead when it comes to gaming. Am i missing something here ? Why is there a lot of difference ?
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14...r-graphics-performance-vs-apple-iphone-6-plus
Clearly a camera issue. He even says in the video that the performance was closer to him playing on a console(PS2/Xbox). Who buys a phone to play games like this anyway? Get a console or a PC to do that, dude! Use your phone to play simple games, like pac-man, or angry birds. No one should expect a phone to perform flawless gaming. That's not it's primary function, just be happy with what you get. Not once have I heard Samsung pitch this phone as a "gaming" phone. It's the Note series man, it's meant for business/productivity/etc, not playing games like a teen. Get a PSP.
Yeah lol. I have been a Samsung fan. I used Galaxy S, S2, S4, Note, Note 2. When you are buying such a high-end phone, you would expect to play games also on your device. If at all you need is to play Angry birds, etc. I would be more than happy with my Note 2 or S4. And yeah top end phones do perform flawless gaming nowadays. Technology has evolved to such a point that no one really feels the need of a PSP anymore. Hope u got my point

Yeah, I get your point. I'm just saying, don't set your standards so high that just because one aspect of it doesn't perform flawlessly, that stops you from recognizing a good phone. I'm not too big on mobile gaming, but the games I do play are a little less graphic/cpu extensive than GTA, so maybe I'm bias. This is a great phone from what I've heard from other users, and what I've experienced in store myself. Not PERFECT, but a definite upgrade to someone like me who currently rocks a Galaxy Nexus haha
I agree it's a great phone no doubt about that. Nothing would stop me from getting this phone. But i was a little worried that's it.

My nexus 4 lags alot in high settings htc one m7 and g2/g3 too my exynos note 3 not laggy though
For games resolution shouldn't be an issue, none of the games would run natively at QHD resolution. Forget QHD, most games won't run natively at FHD.
And to @krishelnino, put the threads in appropriate section. Such threads should be under "Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" forum.
I saw that Gaming video and he says that the performance on standard settings is excellent, smoother than Sony Z3. However, when he maxed out the settings the Gameplay sucked ,worse than Z3. Probably due to display resolution differences.
That's to be expected but what I want to see is how Exynos deals in the same scenario-Max settings! @DelBoy any chance you test your Exynos beast on max settings (see video from 2:50+) and see if performs better than Snapdragon? Thanks!

You didn't watch the entire video. He said it runs well on the lowest settings, so when he upped the quality things got very, very bad.
RR3 ran and looked great when I installed it at BB on a demo. Device never got hot and I played it for about 15 minutes. I wanted to walk out with it.
Both GPUs (Adreno 420 and Mali T760) can't handle such high resolutions very well. But it might have other reasons too, as some games doesn't support such high resolutions natively (as it has been said before).

I doubt that it is the Qualcomm version.
All currently available Note 4 models have the Exynos chip.
The first batch of Qualcomm Notes should be out on the 10th or 17th October.
I also doubt the game has been patched to maximize performance o. The s805 and or Exynos either. It takes weeks for devs to patch games after the new wave of games comes out guys...ask Any Apple fan how the 6+,handles most games at present (re:worse than the 5s)

My Samsung Galaxy Tab S can, and its a higher resolution. So I would lean towards the game needing an update for newer devices.
