[Q] Nexus 4 Gaming - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there, I was just wondering why game on Nexus 4 is more lagging compeer with Galaxy S3 (NFS MW12, GTA Vice City) and have less effects again compeer with G3 (Modern Combat 4)?? :fingers-crossed:

*compare
And it might be an issue with your phone. I experience zero lag while gaming. Also, search a term called "thermal throttling"

It may have less effects as developers are still finding it difficult to get their hands on one. Once they do, I expect them to test it with full effects and update as appropriate

I hope that's true as after watching a comparison between the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 I am sure Nexus 4 can handle the graphics.

[Q] Nexus 7 Quad Core Tegra 3 vs. iPad Mini A5

So I've done some research around the internet, and couldn't really find any decisive information that made it clear. Which chip is better in terms of graphics, processing, smoothness, etc between the Nexus 7 Quad-Core Tegra 3 or the iPad Mini A5 chip? What are your thoughts folks?.

Cause iPad mini is not even out in stores yet? A good comparison woul just refer to iPad 2 since it uses the exact same specs

I read somewhere that the Tegra 3 has a faster CPU, while the A5 is better for graphics processing. Don't know how true that is.
This Mini is already outdated. Look for a new one with Retina in 6 months.
Look at the chip, screen, ram, etc. A mini phoney, lol! Glad I have the N7.

i also looked forward for the apple announcement, even though i wouldn't buy anyways. but the announcement was really disappointing.
but obviously they don't want to cannibalize their own other products, so this product had to be bad and cheap.

Hello you ask a very good question. I'm going to be brutally honest. The iPad mini is almost certainly going to run all the games more smoothly and it has a lot more games and apps to choose from. I'm not bashing Android, but it really lags behind in tablet specific apps.
The A5 is a good chip, in fact it has superior gpu performance to the Tegra 3. Several factors go into this. The A5 also can maintain better frames per second in games also due to the lower resolution. Try out an iPad 2 and see how fluid it is, sorry but it's still more fluid than the Nexus. This is mainly software here. I honestly wish the Nexus 7 had a lower resolution to get better gaming performance. Gameloft games are the best out there and they are developed specifically for Apple's iOS and go watch a couple videos of the iPad 2 running Asphalt 7, Nova 3, and Modern Combat 3, and then watch it running on Nexus 7. They run really laggy on Nexus 7. Even overclocked the Nexus 7's GPU is not that great and can't run a lot of games fluidly. I'm going to check out the iPad Mini when it comes out. The thing stopping me is the price, since I absolutely have to have 32gb on a closed down Apple product.

You make a good point. I own a Nexus 7, and most of Gameloft's games such as Asphalt 7 and Nova 3 aren't as fluid as I'd hoped, especially Nova 3. I had expected the quad core Tegra 3 to run them smoothly, but I guess due to a higher pixel per inch (ppi) rate, it lags. Even with the smoothest custom ROMs. But considering everything else, I love my Nexus 7 in terms of media consumption from browsing the internet, to watching Netflix. And you obviously can't go wrong for the price. It's a great device.
Are there any hopes that the upcoming 32gb Nexus 7 might have some upgraded hardware?

Completely unfair comparison. The 1024x768 is a joke... are you kidding me it doesnt even equal the ppi of the ORIGINAL iPhone. Not to mention its an old dual-core. Good job apple taking a step back to move forward :silly:. Those games are not optimized correctly for the N7 but if you compare any Tegra 3 games to the same iOS variant.. the Tegra is going to blow those games away. Shadowgun THD for instance is way better than the iOS variant. And to sit here and say the iPad will be better at gaming. Well of course its not even pushing HD. And to also say you rather have a non HD display to play games is ridiculous. You should rather be saying i wish developers would put more support towards HD displays.
All in all the N7 is still going to win in pricing alone. The 16GB is 130$ cheaper than the 16GB iPad mini. That tablet is a joke and hope it dies off like every other apple flop.
N7 all the way, iPad can keep it's two steps backwards mentality.

Wow... did nvidia brainwash the posters here with the "4plus1 COARS + 12 GPU COAR" marketing campaign?
SGX543 in A5 is way faster than tegra's crappy Geforce ULP any time of the day. and at any resolution...
nVidia's biggest fault with T3 is the crappy single-channel memory controller. Notice how a lot of games default to a low resolution on N7 (GTA3, riptide, beach buggy blitz, Horn) because the memory bandwidth can't keep up.
This is also one of the main reasons gameloft games lag. optimization here would mean lowering the resolution and lowering texture quality.
The four A9 cores are good marketing material, but useless for the users because none will notice the difference in speed. It's only good for benchmark whores.
Also, just because you get some special graphics effects on T3 does not make it a faster chip. The game developers were paid by nvidia to do it.
Any other chip can run these effects just fine.

If they release a crappy version first then they can release an "updated" version sometime next year with slightly better everything and the sheep will buy both and double the profits for Apple. Same with the iPad 3/4.

Actually Apple doesn't mind cannibalizing it's own products. See iPod/iPhone as an example, there is no point in owning both really so people choose one or the other, unless they are part of the Apple cult and buy both just cuz.

If people are buying ipads in droves (which they have and continue to do), then they are clearly not "way overpriced" - they are perfectly priced (notwithstanding any technical comparisons).

My N7 is as fluid as I would want it, I like the different ROMs and the freedom. And for the price, in my opinion is an absolute steal. In terms of comparing CPUs and GPUs, I haven't looked much into the A5, but I have no complaints with games, especially the tegra optimised games. Stunning quality on a nice detailed screen. I wouldn't touch a 1024x768 screen, nor an overpriced piece of hardware. I look forward to when google release a well priced nexus tablet with 300dpi screen and great hardware support.
Until then, the N7 does it for me.

GTA Vice city running slow?

I got my nexus 4 today, so I decided to test it's performance by downloading GTA Vice city and i noticed it is running very laggy! under 20 fps even.. It's constantly like that. I've also tested the game on a Galaxy s2 and I did not notice any slow downs at all! It even ran very smooth, on the galaxy s2 it ran on medium so I switched to medium on the nexus 4 as well, I wasn't satisfied with the results it kept lagging for some reason!! Is my phone defected? because I read the description of GTA Vice city on the play store, It stated the the game was also tested on a LG Nexus 4.
Any suggestions?
Galaxy S2 runs the game with lower resolution textures so that's why it may be running smoother.
On the other hand, I agree with you regarding Nexus 4's performance. It runs the game on medium settings at like 25fps, which is playable but not really what I expected. The biggest problem is thermal throttling as it forces the CPU to run much slower than it is capable of.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Any chance you can link the play store to what game you are running just to make sure I am testing the right one?
I haven't heard of many problems with gaming .... Maybe the game doesn't like 4.2?

I'm running with all settings maxed and only a couple times my fps gets awful but its mostly smooth. Try tuning back the draw distance.

[Q] Buying the Nexus 4.

Hello fellow Android enthausiasts,
I'm looking to upgrade my phone, which is currently a nearly 3 year old Galaxy S with a custom 4.2.1 ROM.
And my eye fell on the Nexus 4. Now i only have one concern, and that is it's thermal throttling.
I have read on multiple sites that the update to Android 4.2.2 have decreased the heat production
of the Nexus somewhat, but now is my question;
Did it really help? Is your Nexus 4 still throttling after some minutes of gameplay?
And is it really noticeable when playing games and/or normal usage?
Looking forward reading the answers

Never noticed anything and you can always root and control it yourself. No problems with massive 3d games for me.

The phone definitely gets warmer than I expected with a glass back and all, but I've never seen any performance drops as a result of thermal throttling. Afaik it's nothing to be really concerned about, for no valid reason many people on tech sites seem to hate the N4.

[Q] Note 4 Lag on GTA SanAndreas ?

I have been really waiting to buy the Note 4 since months. I didn't buy the LG G3 mainly due to it's poor performance on the QHD display. Just came across this video on YouTube of Note 4 playing the GTA sanandreas and now I am starting to get a bit skeptical about it's performance. Just hope the game might have not been optimized for Note 4 yet ??
Here is the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ4WgowL3Ls
Here is an interesting article that explains about the poor gaming peformance of Note 4. According to this article, iPhone 6/6 Plus is superior and miles ahead when it comes to gaming. Am i missing something here ? Why is there a lot of difference ?
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14...r-graphics-performance-vs-apple-iphone-6-plus
Clearly a camera issue. He even says in the video that the performance was closer to him playing on a console(PS2/Xbox). Who buys a phone to play games like this anyway? Get a console or a PC to do that, dude! Use your phone to play simple games, like pac-man, or angry birds. No one should expect a phone to perform flawless gaming. That's not it's primary function, just be happy with what you get. Not once have I heard Samsung pitch this phone as a "gaming" phone. It's the Note series man, it's meant for business/productivity/etc, not playing games like a teen. Get a PSP.
Yeah lol. I have been a Samsung fan. I used Galaxy S, S2, S4, Note, Note 2. When you are buying such a high-end phone, you would expect to play games also on your device. If at all you need is to play Angry birds, etc. I would be more than happy with my Note 2 or S4. And yeah top end phones do perform flawless gaming nowadays. Technology has evolved to such a point that no one really feels the need of a PSP anymore. Hope u got my point

Yeah, I get your point. I'm just saying, don't set your standards so high that just because one aspect of it doesn't perform flawlessly, that stops you from recognizing a good phone. I'm not too big on mobile gaming, but the games I do play are a little less graphic/cpu extensive than GTA, so maybe I'm bias. This is a great phone from what I've heard from other users, and what I've experienced in store myself. Not PERFECT, but a definite upgrade to someone like me who currently rocks a Galaxy Nexus haha
I agree it's a great phone no doubt about that. Nothing would stop me from getting this phone. But i was a little worried that's it.

My nexus 4 lags alot in high settings htc one m7 and g2/g3 too my exynos note 3 not laggy though
For games resolution shouldn't be an issue, none of the games would run natively at QHD resolution. Forget QHD, most games won't run natively at FHD.
And to @krishelnino, put the threads in appropriate section. Such threads should be under "Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" forum.
I saw that Gaming video and he says that the performance on standard settings is excellent, smoother than Sony Z3. However, when he maxed out the settings the Gameplay sucked ,worse than Z3. Probably due to display resolution differences.
That's to be expected but what I want to see is how Exynos deals in the same scenario-Max settings! @DelBoy any chance you test your Exynos beast on max settings (see video from 2:50+) and see if performs better than Snapdragon? Thanks!

You didn't watch the entire video. He said it runs well on the lowest settings, so when he upped the quality things got very, very bad.
RR3 ran and looked great when I installed it at BB on a demo. Device never got hot and I played it for about 15 minutes. I wanted to walk out with it.
Both GPUs (Adreno 420 and Mali T760) can't handle such high resolutions very well. But it might have other reasons too, as some games doesn't support such high resolutions natively (as it has been said before).

I doubt that it is the Qualcomm version.
All currently available Note 4 models have the Exynos chip.
The first batch of Qualcomm Notes should be out on the 10th or 17th October.
I also doubt the game has been patched to maximize performance o. The s805 and or Exynos either. It takes weeks for devs to patch games after the new wave of games comes out guys...ask Any Apple fan how the 6+,handles most games at present (re:worse than the 5s)

My Samsung Galaxy Tab S can, and its a higher resolution. So I would lean towards the game needing an update for newer devices.
