Question about custom Rom + OTA updates

Hi guys, just a quick question about custom roms + otas updates. Since flashing a custom rom removes official ota updates, are they available still via manually downloading and installing? This is a problem for me since I have the pink camera problem right now and want to beta and flash bacon beta. If I can download the updates myself manually that's fine. I just don't want to be stuck with a pink camera.

More than likely Cyanogen will release his before you would actually get the OTA say you hadn't rooted. So you are better off with the custom rom.

I receive my Nexus 4 tomorrow, Im still debating whether i should root the phone or just keep it stock, any recommendations? Thank you

Depends if you want to enhance your user experience or be happy with how it is
I say root but use it a couple days and once you find that you're installing apps that require su permissions then root it.

Ideally NO!
First use for a couple of days and check for any software or hardware related issues also check the battery backup with stock rom,kernel and then you are free to root.

currently stock with franco kernel as rumors are out that 4.3 is goin to be released this week/month.

Keeping the stock rom will not let you update to 4.3 if you have a custom recovery installed. //not true

I couldn't imagine using an unrooted phone, rooted mine within hours. But as suggested, you should check yours first for a couple of days for defects, then root.

Having a custom recovery will not prevent you from receiving or installing the ota update

Really? Well, one learns new things every day.

Idk why you would get a nexus and not root. They're made for that. Screen color calibration, pie for more screen space, smoothness and longer battery life, USB otg. The list goes on! I didn't even use mine stock for more than a couple of minutes

Of the few Android devices that I own, stock systems have a few disadvantages to my taste:
1. BLOATWARE UP THE A$$
2. SO-SO OPERATING SPEED AND SOME LAG
3. DULL "EVERYBODY-HAS-IT" STOCK SYSTEM => BORING
Advantages of stock systems:
1. Somewhat more or most stable.
2. Much simpler to adjust settings without too many new technical terms or technicalities.
3. Warranty stays if you have it.
I'm still new and still play around with custom ROMs, as I am heavy on eliminating of proprietary software staying on my devices, both computers and smartphones. If it's there, it has to serve a purpose; otherwise, it MUST be gone, not just DISABLED.

I'd definitely root it! To get all the extra goodies which stock doesn't have (like Pie, hide navbar, themes, tweaks, undervolting, underclocking, adblock etc). But try out stock vanilla android and see it root is actually needed for you.

[Q] 4.3 more troublesome than useful?

My N4 just arrived today.
I have version 4.2.2 installed.
A quick search on gooogle shows a lot of negative feedback from users on the 4.3 update.
I want to root it too but I'm unsure about the update, have you ecountered problems with latest update that couldn't be fixed?
Or better said, what are the most common bugs and can they be fixed?
Also what about roms, which one should i try, PA?

Some people experienced random reboots, I never had them on JWR, I do on JSS.
Also JSS has sometimes dead locks and freezes for about 10 seconds.
But since the update I experience much better battery life! So yeah if you will use the stock ROM I guess you wont have any of these problems, only advantages.

Thanks for the question and the answer, I'm in the same spot and maybe I'll try some custom JWR this weekend, although the plethora of different specific 4.3 bugs going around - besides those already mentioned - remembers a X-File case.

Just update first.
Then install a custom recovery and flash supersu.

Changed my mind! Seen too many negative comments on youtube... I'm just gonna root this version 4.2.2. and I'll wait for 5.0

4.3.3 is actually a great upgrade with tons of features and additions. It is just brand new so there are a few bugs to be worked out. But 4.2.2 has bugs that won't be worked out at all.

So how long do you think it will take for them to fix these bugs?

OTA 4.3 update with twrp 2.5 no root.
I have no issues.
If you want a reliable jwr custom ROM then cataclysm is awesome and has no problems either for me.
I use stock for unrooted and cataclysm rooted regularly for different reasons but I definitely recommend updating to 4.3 regardless.

Not sure. That's why I'm on a custom ROM. Devs usually fix things quicker.

You can always go back to a previous version. I'm not really sure why you're being so skittish.
FYI, "5.0" will likely be far more riddled with bugs. More changes means more room for error. You have a freaking Nexus. Get with the program.
My advice to you is to not use a toolkit. Setup fastboot and know how to flash the stock images BEFORE attempting anything. That way, if something goes wrong you can fix it without making yet another "HALP! I bricked my phone" thread. We have way too many of those.

Can I update from Stock 4.3 using Xposed framework? I don't want to lose root or xposed, so do I have to reset first or what? Anybody know? thanks!:highfive:

here we go again, whats the big deal in just waiting for a rooted 4.4 stock rom to come out... Sorry dont mean to be an ass about it just see so many of these threads and dont understand why people just dont wait for there favorite developer to put something together
Edit but to answer your question No you cant and since we are unsure of how to root 4.4 right now there may or may not be some issues at first

I understand what you mean but really who's gonna wait for a developer to release a rom of the latest android version when they can run stock/rooted stock of the newest version as soon as its released? sure custom roms have more features fix bugs etc. but if your that impatient you don't wanna wait around I know I didn't it took Cyanogen almost 3 months to release 4.3

I wait because if I wanted stock I would already be on it and enjoy that life. I have been around for a while and see a lot of people destroy their phones trying to resort back to stock and then get stuck there because of root issues or bootloader issues. Not saying thats an issue here but you guys act like a rooted version after a few days is going to kill you. Look its just my opinion from what I have seen around here. Root/unroot/root again... ehhh

Just purchased a Nexus 7 on swappa.com...

The previous owner said he had unlocked and rooted it. Not sure what version it's on... But could I take an ota update successfully? I don't care if I lose root. I bought this for my son to play with.

Check to see if there's custom recovery installed. You should flash a factory image and wipe it clean to be 100% sure it'll take an OTA.

Yes he said he had clockwork on it but I prefer twrp which I'll probably flash..
That's if I decide to just throw a sick based rom on it instead.
Can you recommend a good stock based rom that would continue to be updated?

Hmm... Well, I dunno if Team Android makes any more ROMs but those are as close to stock as you can get. Perhaps going simple CyanogenMod or Carbon would be great alternatives if you cannot flash to stock (although there may not be anymore OTAs it's super stable). I don't think the little one will care too much about customizing the UI.

True. I just want something stable so any apps or movie players (MXplayer) run without an issue.
Always seems like cm had so many bugs, even the so called "stable or snapshots".
I saw that SlimKat had a few stable builds. I love that on my 2013 N7 and my G2. Super stable

I guess CM was kinda a bad recommendation, although I never had problems... Anyways, stock or Carbon...or SlimKat, more games and movies! And speed! Have fun choosing!

How about of I just use wugfresh toolkit to unroot. Would I receive ota update from that point on?

That I'm not sure of. If the /system partition was changed at all, the md5 would come out invalid and it would send you into a bootloop. You'd also need stock recovery but you can flash an OTA through custom recovery as a .zip. I seriously recommend flashing a stock image if you expect to take an OTA because you really don't know what the original owner had done...

I was under the impression that unrooting and Locking through wugfresh installed the latest stock firmware and bootloader
