Just wondering, if I were to flash to a custom rom, such as Thor... then a few months later ICS comes out for our tablets, what would the upgrade process entail?
I'm hesitant to try a custom rom, because when ICS finally comes I don't want there to be extra steps in order to get the update.
Anyone know how difficult/easy this is going to be? Will it involve having to flash back to stock first, then OTA to ICS?
TIA!

Not trying to be rude but honestly, if youre afraid of a few extra steps than rooting and android is not for you. I suggest an apple product.
But to answer your question, when official ICS comes out OTA Im sure devs will create custom roms that you can just flash. I mean we already have ICS ports in the works.
Why would you want crappy OTA ICS when you could have a faster, custom rom ICS .

Don't assume. I already have ICS running on my Galaxy S; I'm sure I've flashed and reflashed android devices just as much as anyone else here. It's not about being afraid. It's about convenience for a device I've come to rely on day-to-day.
Thanks for the post, anyways. But I'd still like to hear what the process would be to go from a custom rom to the offical OTA ICS.

From what Ive read (search function), you can update from a custom rom but you will lose root.

If u rely on this day to day, u do NOT want to flash an ICS rom yet. Not even close for day to day use.Stick with what u have and just be patient.

I agree wait for the kinks to be worked out.
If you rely on this device pretty heavily, and you still want to get ICS when it comes out, I would just recommend flashing a custom ROM now that is known to be pretty stable. like you suggested, Thor's ROM seems to be a great one. It definitely improves the speed of the tablet and I have yet to come across any bugs that would inhibit my everyday use. Then, once developers have worked out a ROM for a relatively stable version of ICS, you shouldn't have any trouble switching to that and not worrying about the OTA updates.

Well, if you're familiar with all that, then you already know how to flash an OEM ROM and would know you already knew how to do it.
can be a bit of a pain going back to stock ota updates. Depends on availability of your devices localized stock rom.( or being able to backup stock rom first). Took me about 5 days to find the right files and steps to get ota working again. Didnt help that i am a total newbie, the iconia is my first android device never flashed anything before except a pc bios. Do your research first and make sure you can go back instead of getting stuck. Here is a link to get you started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155664 another thing when you go back to stock you also go to the back of the line in the update queue as well. I was on 3.2.1 went back to 3.1 got ota updates up to 3.2 but have not recieved 3.2.1 update again yet cheers.

Hey guys,
I'm planning to root the Nexus 4 when I get it, my question is will it get updates while it's running a custom ROM like CM 10.1 or custom kernel like franco? OR do I have to return to stock to get an update ? I bought this phone because it is a nexus device which gets updates faster than any android device so it is important to me..
Thanks a lot!!
no you cant get ota updates with custom rom/kernel... update accordingly to your rom's progression.

yes it is.
I flashed the GE 4.3 for i9505, which is the following ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348272
Today I've received an 16MB OTA that told me the feature I can find contacts directly when dialing. (p.s. I'm using the zh-CN language.)
Obviously, it cannot be updated cause the model is mismatch though I made it a try somehow.
My TWRP returned "status 7" err.
I googled it and found a version JWR66V.S015 (my current is S014).
Does anyone got this update?
Is there anyway to flash in or just waiting for new ROM?
p.s. I'm a newbie here and I don't have the permission to reply in the DEV forums
jarmal's new ROM comes out! QUEST CLEAR. Lock plz.

I would be perfect if only I9505 can be transformed into I9505G.
GE rom is faster and more stable than any other TW/AOKP/CM10.2 roms at present.

Thanks...I'm a noob about flashing, so when you flash your smartphone with another ROM you generally can't update via OTA?

Almost right. Better to say once if you have a third-party recovery, you cannot install OTA with right pattern.
Just Received The New OTA 2.3 (77 mb)

-Improved touch responsiveness

Yes I got the notification but I'm worried that if I install it on a rooted device it will brick my tablet.

I doubt it'll brick your device, but it'll almost definitely remove root access, and it's also possible that it'll break whatever methods there are for obtaining root again.

I wonder if I Could just flash the stock recovery, then apply the OTA then flash CWM and SU
its patching the kernel first looking at it,
tried it on mine just and it errors out, doesn't "brick it" oh I hate that expression, and errors before making any other changes.
Guess I'll need to restore a stock kernel/recovery before flashing it
Interesting..

Sounds quite complicated.
Deepak Vishnu
Do you think you can explain how to modify the updater script to be able to flash the new update using cwm.
Do you lose root and cwm if you do it this way?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Drc.
Installation seems to work with cwm. Still on the go for me, but no errors yet, and i got through the "Verifying current system" step.
E: nope. gets till the end, but quits with an error (no error message though)
E2: got it now. Update is AWESOME! Tab is faster and responsivenes did really improve. love it!

New OTA 4.4.2 2.3 made into a rom for CWM recovery check it out. flash in recovery then flash supersu for root.
http://rootjunkysdl.com/?device=Tegra Note 7&folder=Rom Stock 4.4.2-2.3
They have removed art from the developer options. That's annoying

Is your server having any bandwidth issues? I've had quite a bit of trouble downloading the rom in the past 12 or so hours, with the max speed capping at 15-16kb/s and two dropouts.
That said, It seems to have come good in the last hour though. Thankyou for the effort of putting this up :good:
I updated my TN7 first to 4.4.2 and the previous OTA (2.2 i assume), then used the SuperTool 2.2 from the other thread to unlock and root the tablet with no problems.
Next day this OTA was avaiable and it installed without problems. Root is still active.
I wanted to say i have a EVGA one, but after trying to confirm this, i'm not so sure anymore. Will ask in other thread to find out.
I tried ART with mine and had tons of issues... anything involving the stylus support just went totally wonky. Shame, cuz it certainly zipped along!

If it was the EVGA one, there would be a big EVGA logo on the back
The previous owner said he had unlocked and rooted it. Not sure what version it's on... But could I take an ota update successfully? I don't care if I lose root. I bought this for my son to play with.
Thanks

Check to see if there's custom recovery installed. You should flash a factory image and wipe it clean to be 100% sure it'll take an OTA.

Yes he said he had clockwork on it but I prefer twrp which I'll probably flash..
That's if I decide to just throw a sick based rom on it instead.
Can you recommend a good stock based rom that would continue to be updated?

Hmm... Well, I dunno if Team Android makes any more ROMs but those are as close to stock as you can get. Perhaps going simple CyanogenMod or Carbon would be great alternatives if you cannot flash to stock (although there may not be anymore OTAs it's super stable). I don't think the little one will care too much about customizing the UI.

True. I just want something stable so any apps or movie players (MXplayer) run without an issue.
Always seems like cm had so many bugs, even the so called "stable or snapshots".
I saw that SlimKat had a few stable builds. I love that on my 2013 N7 and my G2. Super stable

That I'm not sure of. If the /system partition was changed at all, the md5 would come out invalid and it would send you into a bootloop. You'd also need stock recovery but you can flash an OTA through custom recovery as a .zip. I seriously recommend flashing a stock image if you expect to take an OTA because you really don't know what the original owner had done...
