MMS question, free or not? read body before answering please - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i'm on tmobile. i have 1000 minutes talk, UNLIMITED text, but NO data plan. if i send multimedia messages (MMS). do i get charged for data? people told me you either need wifi or data on in order to send mms. however, they also said that the MMS uses a different server from internet data. so if i send MMS, would i still get charged for data plan since it requires, even though i have unlimited text plan?

MMS uses data AFAIK.

yes i know, as i've said in the body of my post, i know it uses data. but people said it uses a different or protocol server from the internet data. so would i still be charged as if it was internet data? or even though it uses data, since it's different from internet data, i won't get any charges?

MMS requires data as you said. The plan you have though could specify free SMS/MMS without you having access to the internet. MMS uses a local server on the network you are on so it wont work over WIFI and it doesn't use the internet.
With that said though, it all depends on your plan. There are some prepaid carriers that offer cheap plans with NO internet but still included unlimited SMS and MMS because internet is not a requirement for MMS. Your phone obviously does need a data connection to their servers but that doesn't count.
I don't see that 1000 minute plan on the T-Mobile site but even their 500 Talk and Text plan includes MMS and it does NOT include any internet.

Data usage charges when sending MMS

hi all,
i have a T-Mobile MDA Vario 2 on the Flext 30 package.
PROBLEM:
my phone is set on the GSM network and not the 3G network.
each time i sent a MMS message (should be free under my flex price plan) i get charged 0.001p and 0.005p per message i send.
it logs these charges as internet usage.
all i am doing is sending an mms. i have not change any setting on the phones therfore the phone is using the default tmobile settings.
this has gone back and forth between me and T-mobile since i have got the phone and they are convinced i am using the web on my phone (not the case) to the extent i have gone to a t-mobile shop and asked the guy there to send an MMS whilst onto t-mobile CS to prove i am not accesing the web.
the problem has now been passed on to T-Mobiles GPRS supplier.
i was wondering if anyone else has seen this behaviour.
I think company treats it as a data transfer so dats y they r charging coz when u surf the web then also it is treated as the data transfer still u wld b clarified by ur network provider .
the way it normally works in the UK is that you are charged a flat rate for an MMS message regardless of connection (i belive) this charge is covered under the Flext plan hance as long as you have available credit on your Flext price plan you pay nothing for the MMS.
i am paying nothing for the actuall MMS it just seems to add 0.5pence worth of data usage each time i sent or recieve an MMS.
the data usage is timed at exactly the time i sent the MMS to 1 min later. so i assume its something to do with connecting disconecting to the T-Mobile internet when its about to send the message
Hi, I have Cingular...so it might be different, but I expect they treat MMS the same way, which is yes you will get charged for data useage.
Example to send a MMS with Cingular you go through [email protected] and anything sent through that is data useage.

Actually it is counting as a data transfer

WiFi or Data plan usage?

Hello all I have a HTC/Fuze (Raphael) with AT&T and can access the web just fine. I however did not get a data plan on the the phone..just an unlimited text to talk family plan. This is an offered plan in case you do not want a data plan. My question is how can you tell if you are using your wifi to access the internet and not the att network. I don't want to be charged for using the internet (since i have no data plan)...I went to the att store yesterday and they told me I can still get charged for using their network to access the net even though I have no data plan... can anyone help me with this question?
Thanks.

you need to use the HTC data connection application. you should be able to totally disallow any internet connection.
I am using an Orbit 2 on O2 UK, when wifi is connected it will only use it until disconnected or out of range, then reverts back to 3G.
You will know when it reverts back because the speed of the internet will slow significantly.
I completely disable/delete the medianet and AT&T ISP profiles so that it doesn't ever connect over 3G.
I have the same setup as you (but with a Tilt, no data plan). Download Modaco No Data cab, install and disable the ISP (the first option). This will turn off data usage but still allow you to send and recieve text and MMS.

myTouch 3G without a data plan

I have been using my new mytouch without a data plan for about a week now. I had data when I activated the phone (didn't sign up for it, but was able to connect), but they have since blocked it. Everything works fine without a data plan except for one thing - MMS. MMS is not working for me now, and I suspect its because I don't have a data plan. I tried changing around APN settings, but haven't managed to find a combination that works. Anyone have any ideas on work around?
So that is weird because technically, without data, you should only get mms / sms and phone.
mms uses the data connection
MMS messages need the data connection to work. SMS messages should work without a data connection since they are transmitted over the signaling portion of the cell channel.
Without the data plan MMS will not work.
Why then did MMS work on my T-Mobile Dash without a data plan?
Dash was a different phone
Windows Mobile on the dash handled data differently than the android software, plus the network systems have been changed to recognize data phones and require the correct data plans.
The Dash was not supposed to get MMS without a data plan but it worked as long as you could connect to T-zones.
Wi-fi works but to get the most of this phone the $24.99 plan is required.
yea i had the same thing the data worked over 3g for about a day. u can buy the phone form walmart and u will not have to to get the 24.99 data plan i just told them i have it on another line.
So...you can have a PDA/Smartphone, and not get hit with the additional cost of a data plan. Is this where you'd need a "unlocked" phone?

to view MMS without a data plan? No cuz an unlocked phone only allows you to use the phone with other carriers.
is there anyway to activate it without dataplan simcard....? with wifi same like g1
I think that myTouch "need" simcard with data plan to activate it. only wifi is impossible to activate.
However, I've another question. Is it possible to use this phone when I have no Internet conneciton (wifi/2G/3G)? I just need to use if for making a call.
yes. if your mytouch 3g is alrady activated (needs sim cardwith data plan for that), you can SMS and make phonecalls and check voicemail (visual voicemail does need data tho) without any data connection, just like normal cellphones.
OK folks. For those of you that missed it. The My Touch has to be activated using a sim card with a data plan attached. Once that is done, you don't need data. MMS on the MyTouch runs through the data portion of the network. Yot car root the phone, load up a different recovery image like Cyanogen or Amon ra's, and no more need to activate that handheld again. As for MMS, no fix for that. You have to have data to send an MMS. Large text, Picture, Or video messages will not work on a text package alone. A "large" text message is about 133 characters or more. Don't realy remember to well these days. The phone was designed around a data connection. Without it, you're gonna have issues.
Is there a List?
Is there a list of phones that MMS won't work or other features are disabled? The G1 used to not need data now T-mobile say's it does? so if I was to get a G1 without data is MMS gone? Curious about the Nokia nuron or nexus 1 is anything disabled without data?
I want to get a nice phone preferably with wifi but no data plan what is my best option a list of phones that work 100% without Data would be very cool...
Need to know my options so I can start trying to get a deal on the phone I select.
Thanks

No not really. the $10 Unlimited web for phone data plan works. Just need to tweak around the apn settings.
I have also seen some forums that included that a 5.99$ Tzone data plan also work with mytouch 3g. However it is difficult to get that plan.
After activating and sim unlocking the phone, If I ever factory data reset, would I have to activate it again with a Tmobile sim card?
Now I am confused.
I have a MyTouch3g from t-mobile. I bought it used so I did not need to get the data plan to activate it, however, picture messages still work just fine for me, as do video. I would like to know why.

Are you getting charged for data usage? AFAIK all MMS has to go over towers so that the carriers network can authenticate the phone they're are coming from, but I could be wrong.

go-phone: mms on unlocked htc hd2 without using data

hey there i have another question, you see im using the NRG rom on my unlocked hd2 and i popped the prepaid/gophone att sim card in and it set everything up for me. so i could use edge to access the web and all that, and send mms messages. but since i dont want to use the data on the phone and just wifi, i turned data off , but then i cant send mms's , so i dont know if theres a way to like mess up the settings on the data settings so that it sends mms's without me having to use data. btw i have the unlimited text option that states i dont need a data plan to send mms's. thanks to anyone who can help.
windows mobile can only send mms over data!!!
my o2 sets two data connections, one for data and one for mms. If i just turn off all data, i cant send mms, but if i use something like 'dialup enabler/disabler' i can turn off one or both of these, hence i can turn off only the actual data connection and leave the mms connection on.

Yes, and tmobile (US) is the same way...you can use MMS (as long as it's on the plan) even if you don't have any other data provisioned on the line.
EDIT: barronedson, I would suggest calling AT&T and asking what settings you need when you want to send MMS without a data plan, if no other members here have any suggestions.

[Q] Will MMS work over WiFi?

If I'm on WiFi, will MMS use my data plan or wifi?
MMS goes through your texting plan on AT&T. It doesn't count as data usage.

So it uses no data at all? Then why does it require data to send mms?
You don't need a data plan to send an MMS, but it needs a data connection to send the information because it still routes it over the 3G connection.
Because of the way it routes the MMS as opposed to regular web traffic, they track it and don't bill you for data usage even though it uses the data connection.
That's how it is with AT&T on a locked phone, but I don't know about other carriers or if you are using an unlocked device.
T-Mobile yes can over wifi

Yea and T-mobile supports wi-fi calling as well and At&t Does not.
Pretty sure it has to be a T-Mobile Device With Wi-Fi calling option in order for that o work...could be wrong though.
