N7 keeps taking screenshots - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, community!
I have this N7 3G and the problem is that it keeps taking screenshots whenever I press the Power button, without even holding down any of the volume buttons.
I don't know whether this is caused by my custom ROM or any of my applications .Also, I set the gallery to sync with a Dropbox folder, that meaning that those ss' will upload there every time.
If anybody can help me solve this problem I will be grateful!
*I am using Temasek's custom CM Rom with Franco's kernel.
Thanks!

Nope, it isn't. I can press it and adjust volume normally.
I am pretty sure something is causing this, probably an application, but if there is anyone using the temasek's rom just as me, please tell me if you encounter this problem to know whether this is caused by this rom or an application.

mine too
Earlier i went into my gallery and i saw a lot of screenshots that i didnt take.

I don't even know how to take screenshots on N7

What ROM do you use?

Normally you take screenshots by pressing the Power button along with the Volume Down button, not only the Power Button alone.
Other methods are taking them with different applications or maybe your ROM could do that too.

Hardware Instrumentation

Hi Guys,
I have a stock but rooted N1 on 2.2.1
I have a slight feeling that my power button is intermittently not responding.
Is there an instrumentation app or something y'all recommend to test hardware with?
I remember in cyanogen(on my g1) there was a spare parts app, which I think could do this. However, I am on a stock image.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks!
i dont know how you could test the button. but i use quickboot app so i never ever have to use the power button. and of course i use cyanogen ROM so i get trackball wake so i never need the power button.

It's just a free app that does all your reboot, power off, recovery stuff for you so you never have to physically press the power button.
well only if you never run out of battery and never want to turn off you phone... but there its supposed to be a truck with that as well. just take our your battery and put it back in. repeat this procedure till your phone turns on. just read about this one though. haven't tried it myself...

The app let's you turn the phone off. The only thing it can't do is if you run out of battery which I've never done anyway and don't do that frequently but yes.
No I do not.
I used to mess with all that stuff with my g1 (since tmo was slow to update)
But I am stupid and happy with my N1 being stock (+root+adblock)
Any other options?
Like using adb to run some testing software or something

Anybody else experiencing this?

Within the last couple days I noticed that my power/standby button doesn't always work. From time to time I will try pressing it and I will try holding it, and randomly I will hear the camera shutter sound and it will take a screenshot! Weird... I just flashed SC 2.8 today and the problem was still there. Anybody have this happen/have suggestions on how to fix it?
I know when you take a screen shot with 2.8 you hold the back button and hit the power button.
Just try to flash 2.8 again.
The screen shot thing is part of Android 2.2 I believe, but I've been having the same issue and I'm on stock/deodexed/debloated EB01. I can never tell if I just don't press the button enough or if the button truly isn't working. I agree with k rock though, clear cache, wipe dalvik and try to reflash it.
This is good news....I was looking for the answer to this....I knew it was possible but wasn't sure how to accomplish.
Happens to me too.
i haven't updated to 2.8 yet, but i know making the power button take pics in camera mode was added as a feature in one of the earlier sc versions. i'm on 2.4, and i haven't had any issues with the button not working, though.
i want to disable it ...its annoying...can someone pls tell us how?

It might be possible for you to use root explorer to just kill the app, ScreenCaptureService.apk, I don't think this will break anything else since its just a system app. Worst case you have to reflash 2.8. Maybe just try moving it first so you can put it back if you want.

I believe this to be true. I read somewhere you could do that but never tried because I imagined somewhere, sometime I'd want to use it. The screen capture has been available since DL30 (you're supposed to hold down the Back button while then pressing power, this always works for me as long as you wait just a bit before pressing power button), but based on what has been posted here and my own experience, it seems to be buggy (i.e., taking screenshots when you don't want it to/have not even pressed the back button - for me, I couldn't get the power button to do anything after having taken a picture accidentally until I tapped the Back button once)
I haven't had the bug since moving to SC2.8 though (a couple days ago, I'd normally get a couple unintended screenshots a day).
Its been my experience that sometimes the soft keys at the bottom of the device have a mind of their own sometimes. On many an occasion my back button specifically will activate two or three times all on its own

Yes, this has happened to me. I am guilty of not wiping between SC2.6 and SC2.8, though. There has been just enough goofy behavior that I think I will do a wipe later today and re-Odin the SC2.8 tar file on to my phone.

Question:
What locking feature are you using? pin, pattern, password, glass slide?
Voodoo or non

[Q] Power Button Issue?

When I first flashed stock 4.3, JWR, my power button worked flawlessly, every click would turn it on or off, now that I'm on PA 3.99, I have to press the power button multiple times to have for screen to come on or off. Sometimes it works on one go, sometimes it doesn't.

Nooooo... I hope it's not the same story as with HTC One V... I have to use sweep2wake and have huge problems with turning phone on/off... Unfortunately N4 doesn't have those hardware touch buttons that HOV has

That's changing some things... For me it's not power button malfuction, but PA may causing problems with screen drivers responsible for unlocking it... Maybe you've made dirty flash? Try flashing PA again with full wipe and report results

My power button is the weakest link so far, but I use touch control to counter. Also, how do you have your phone set up(kernel wise)? And If pa is the problem then why not flash another Rom? If not to solve your issue, then to confirm that pa is the culprit.

Before that, Do a clean install most probably try a different ROM(Slimbean v1.6 :good
You can use Franco kernel he has implemented double tap to wake feature in his kernel. :good:
I am using the same.
Press thanks if I helped. :good:

If you go Slimbean and Franco make sure you download the jwr kernel and not the jss kernel. Fku will download the jss kernel by default as slim is one of those hybrid roms.
Remember, Franco's double tap is different from touch to wake in the sense that you can't slide to sleep, at least not yet.....back up your apps with titanium, your sms if needed, reset your phone, flash Rom, gapps, su if need be and you should be good.

Phone not turning on

My phone is having an issue where randomly it'll just stop responding. I'll go to turn on the screen or unlock with my fingerprint, nothing happens. Hold the power button down for 1+ minute, nothing happens. Plug into my computer, no recognition on my PC that anything was plugged in. Plug into the charger, no battery light. Is this thing dying?
Finally turned on after holding the power button down. Same as yesterday. Is this a hardware issue or something with the ROM possibly?

Right but holding the power button down doesn't really do anything until I let it sit, at least with today's and yesterday's occurrences.

You know there's really only one way to find out....go back to the stock rom for a while. You won't really be losing much, if anything. Nothing wrong with the stock ROM, rooted and kernel- it's rock solid. Between Google's backup/restore and TiBu, you can be back right where you were in an hour or so. You should have your answer within a couple of days. You may also want to install Accubattery to check your battery's capacity vs design.
I don't suppose you are running Franco's kernel or any battery saving apps like Naptime or Greenify?

Nope. ElementalX kernel and none of that other nonsense. Just sounds like a hardware issue since I'm holding the power button down for several minutes and nothing happens, then eventually the phone hard-reboots.

Supposing your profile is up to date, I'm running the same setup as you: PN Feb 2017 + EX Kernel 4.05... I've never had such problem...
As @v12xke advised, try loading a stock firmware and see if it happens again...

They can.. Naptime can turn off your fingerprint sensor and make it hard to wake up phone. Greenify img system apps can have unintended consequences. Franco's kernel effects the responsiveness and performance of the phone because it is geared towards battery savings.

EX kernel has nothing to do with your problem. First step is to hold only the power button down for two solid minutes to see if your phone reboots. This situation happens sometimes, but usually the phone reboots while your finger is on the power button. Often it starts and the phone behaves normally again. (Except in OP's case)
I'm having a similar problem after updating to 7.1.2 on the beta program.
Phone wouldn't reboot after installing 7.1.2, it took me a good few hours of pressing power + volume down to get into the stock bootloader/recovery? and started the phone that way. I then opted out of the beta program and reverted back to stock 7.1.1. While at work the phone died and after charging it would not start by pressing the power key, I had to do the whole 3-4 hr process of Power+volume down to get it to boot again. It's up and running now but I fear if it dies I will be in the same boat again with the 3-4 process.
It seems to me that the new update somehow messed with a proper shut down of the phone? It's to bad I really liked this phone up until this problem started.

Sorry to hear that. For the majority of others the 7.1.2 beta is working just fine, and in fact fixed a long standing BT car connection bug that was rolled out to the 5X and Pixels earlier. Maybe beta testing is not for you, but I haven't been able to connect my phone with my car since last October so I was determined to try it. I used a TWRP flashable version of the image. You may want to wait for the official Google OTA image whenever they get around to posting it... or just wait until it is out of beta.

Record screen with buttons at nonrooted A2017G

Hi there,
as my original Axon 7 that I bought 1 year ago has been killed by a water damage, I luckily got a brand new one some days ago. I rooted the first one instantly when I got it, so I decided to try out stock system for a while.
However, on my rooted A2017G I was able to record the screen by pushing power + vol up buttons at the same time. Is there any way to do this with a nonrooted phone?
I already tried some apps from the playstore, but they all use on screen buttons.
Btw, I'm using an A2017G with android 7.1.1 and build-number A2017GV1.2.0B08, as I mentioned not rooted and BL locked, so just stock software.
Any advice about this would be great, as I actually don't want to root or unlock bootloader on this phone, as I might be selling it in the next few weaks.
For screenshot, use power & volume DOWN.
Also the MiPOP app cannot be frozen for screenshot to function. (this is based on the 2017U, but I suspect yours is the same)
Goodluck.
