My phone is having an issue where randomly it'll just stop responding. I'll go to turn on the screen or unlock with my fingerprint, nothing happens. Hold the power button down for 1+ minute, nothing happens. Plug into my computer, no recognition on my PC that anything was plugged in. Plug into the charger, no battery light. Is this thing dying?
Finally turned on after holding the power button down. Same as yesterday. Is this a hardware issue or something with the ROM possibly?

Right but holding the power button down doesn't really do anything until I let it sit, at least with today's and yesterday's occurrences.

You know there's really only one way to find out....go back to the stock rom for a while. You won't really be losing much, if anything. Nothing wrong with the stock ROM, rooted and kernel- it's rock solid. Between Google's backup/restore and TiBu, you can be back right where you were in an hour or so. You should have your answer within a couple of days. You may also want to install Accubattery to check your battery's capacity vs design.
I don't suppose you are running Franco's kernel or any battery saving apps like Naptime or Greenify?

Nope. ElementalX kernel and none of that other nonsense. Just sounds like a hardware issue since I'm holding the power button down for several minutes and nothing happens, then eventually the phone hard-reboots.

Supposing your profile is up to date, I'm running the same setup as you: PN Feb 2017 + EX Kernel 4.05... I've never had such problem...
As @v12xke advised, try loading a stock firmware and see if it happens again...

They can.. Naptime can turn off your fingerprint sensor and make it hard to wake up phone. Greenify img system apps can have unintended consequences. Franco's kernel effects the responsiveness and performance of the phone because it is geared towards battery savings.

EX kernel has nothing to do with your problem. First step is to hold only the power button down for two solid minutes to see if your phone reboots. This situation happens sometimes, but usually the phone reboots while your finger is on the power button. Often it starts and the phone behaves normally again. (Except in OP's case)
I'm having a similar problem after updating to 7.1.2 on the beta program.
Phone wouldn't reboot after installing 7.1.2, it took me a good few hours of pressing power + volume down to get into the stock bootloader/recovery? and started the phone that way. I then opted out of the beta program and reverted back to stock 7.1.1. While at work the phone died and after charging it would not start by pressing the power key, I had to do the whole 3-4 hr process of Power+volume down to get it to boot again. It's up and running now but I fear if it dies I will be in the same boat again with the 3-4 process.
It seems to me that the new update somehow messed with a proper shut down of the phone? It's to bad I really liked this phone up until this problem started.

Sorry to hear that. For the majority of others the 7.1.2 beta is working just fine, and in fact fixed a long standing BT car connection bug that was rolled out to the 5X and Pixels earlier. Maybe beta testing is not for you, but I haven't been able to connect my phone with my car since last October so I was determined to try it. I used a TWRP flashable version of the image. You may want to wait for the official Google OTA image whenever they get around to posting it... or just wait until it is out of beta.

Hi,
Couldn't find anything in the forum, but it could be detailed a 100 different ways...
I'm having a problem where my x10 won't come out of sleep properly - it doesn't happen all the time, but often enough for it to be super annoying...
Basically I cannot get it out of sleep - the screen will turn on, but without backlight, and without the ability to interact with the touchscreen. to get out of it, I have to pull the back off the phone, and pull out the battery.
So in short, I'd say the digitizer and the backlight frequently fail (together) coming out of sleep (everything else 'works')
Anyone else had experience with this issue?
P.S. I'm not rooted.
Happened like 2 times to me, I leave it for 1 min and press again and it works.
No big deal.
sent from my x10i that is banging for a 2.1 upgrade. ...

Normally I need the phone there and then, but worth a try waiting... I just upgraded to the latest FW, so hopefully it's the last time it happens...
Thanks!
Hmm.. tried the waiting option... left it for more than 10 min, and all it did was stay frozen and drain my battery...
Might try a full re-flash
Strange. I thought a Firmware upgrade would have sorted it. Do you have any apps installed that may be relevant, a lock app or anything? And did it do this from the moment you got your phone?

It started happening fairly soon after I got the phone... couldn't say when, but it's now happening really frequently - at least 3 times today already...
I don't have any apps I could pinpoint, although I'd guess it would have to be something I installed fairly early on.
Strange that it's getting worse though.
Hmm, it seems that this has happened to a few other people online, but mostly with HTC devices. Do your hardware buttons (at the bottom) wake it up differently at all?

Yeah, the HW buttons wake up fine (at least from what I can tell) but they're basically useless when the phone is stuck on the lockscreen
I did a full re-flash last night, so hopefully that fixes it...
It had better since all of the backup programs I had faith in failed me completely... man I'm annoyed... have to spend a bunch of hours putting everything back on my phone and setting it up again.
I recently wiped all of my phone (factory+cache) and installed the latest 4.0.3 official update from SAMSUNG.
I also enabled the FULL DISK ENCRYPTION while doing this.
I am now waiting to decrypt it to see if this problem persits if I turn the encryption off.
The problem is that if I leave my phone locked for a few hours/minutes it randomly won't turn on the screen again, when I press the power button.
A hard reboot (holding) fixes this everytime. But this is not a fix, we all know.
It never happened on Gingerbread 2.3.5.
I am beginning to suspect there's a bug in the ICS firmware, although it's 4.0.3, it could slip through.
It's hard to say what's causing the trouble. I have connected the phone to USB now. Waiting for the symptom to show again. I assume I can get a good logcat.
adb shell logcat > logcat.txt
So I'm waiting for an error / event of POWER button at this moment, and will keep logging till it produces the same error again.

I can't believe this ! Is this a SAMSUNG or an Android/ICS problem ?
My version is:
4.0.3
IM74K.XXLPQ
Any custom ROMs addressed this issue or how can you avoid this on ICS? Is the only solution to go back to Gingerbread ?
Hi guys, hope your well.
I am having a similar issue too. I am on Hydrogen AOKP Rom, and I get exactly the same. However, apart from just the blank screen, my phone gets extremely hot too.The only way to get it back on is to remove the battery. Very annoying!!
I cant seem to figure what it is. I have tried to search here on XDA for the resolution but to no avail. Could it be the Kernal? The Modem? Tweaking via SetCPU? or a combination of all? Atleast if I could get pointed to the right direction that'll be a start! lol
Are you guys getting the overheating problem too?
Its a bit like continual posting in the wrong forum nobody knows why ??

No overheating (yet) you can help if you can keep logcatting through usb cable till it lock/standby freezes and your screen won't come on when pressing power ..
Install SDK + Drivers, write in commandprompt:
adb shell logcat > save.txt
Wait for the error / freeze where screen won't come on.
Then paste here or upload somewhere might contain a lead to a solution!

Nah!
It's there on all the kernels. I myself am a Siyah user.
I moved back to GB for this weird and terribly serious issue, but that time i didn't know it was a common problem.
This is ICS' best feature for sure.
I really CAN NOT believe how this issue is NOT yet known well and haven't brought in to front line. Google knows about it and yet I haven't seen any official statements about it. How ****in unbelievable or not perhaps? Google way?? Well **** it.
Utter Nonsense. What i wonder is, really, does any Android user actually use the phone but show off only??
I can almost reliably reproduce this problem.
I'm on ICS LP7 stock XEU version. When I have downloads running with Ttorrent, there's an almost 50% chance that the screen will not turn on once it goes to sleep. The phone is not frozen as my downloads continue to run; just that nothing is being shown on the display. If you hold the volume down button you will feel the phone vibrate to tell you it went into silent mode, which means the phone didn't freeze. After about a minute or so if I try again everything will work as normal, until I put the screen to sleep again.

Do the logcat as I provided the correct command to extract it to a file.
Then do your torrent thing, and make it crash- so we can debug !
Used to happen, since I installed latest hydrog3n-ICS rom (13-05) never had those again!

It happened to me as well after the ICS update and I tried to plug the AC charger to see what happens, and surprise...the screen turned on .
It's not a fix (especially when away with no accessories) but it's better than nothing, hope this helps; also you should try plugging the USB cable. Tell me if it helps.

Hello, community!
I have this N7 3G and the problem is that it keeps taking screenshots whenever I press the Power button, without even holding down any of the volume buttons.
I don't know whether this is caused by my custom ROM or any of my applications .Also, I set the gallery to sync with a Dropbox folder, that meaning that those ss' will upload there every time.
If anybody can help me solve this problem I will be grateful!
*I am using Temasek's custom CM Rom with Franco's kernel.
Thanks!

Normally you take screenshots by pressing the Power button along with the Volume Down button, not only the Power Button alone.
Other methods are taking them with different applications or maybe your ROM could do that too.

Happens to me almost every time I connect it to my cars Bluetooth to listen to Pandora, and i'm on the latest CM 10.1 nightly.
SOD
I also happened yesterday and today, yesterday had cm 10.1 and in the evening I returned to stock 4.2.2 and happened again this morning. any suggestion?
My wife and I are both having this problem with our N4s. It's been happening on and off since about 2 weeks after we got them on January 7. I'm still debating whether or not to try an exchange under warranty. I'm not yet convinced that it would help, but it seems like it's only affecting a handful of us, so maybe it is hardware related?
Hmm hppnd with me too. Yst n today almost at same time. After playing with some apps or games.. Phone was hot..

What rom/kernel if any are you guys on? I recently got the SOD. I am on the PA 3.1 and bundled kernel. Not sure what's causing it. My initial assumption was the themes in cm10. Now I think it's the launcher in question or lockscreen.
I am using Nova Launcher with slide/stock lockscreen. Nothing really has changed that I can tell within the last week. I uninstalled all my themes this morning to see if it was that causing the SOD.
Got the SOD this morning at work. Had to long press the power button a few times to boot it up. This time I uninstalled the Nova Launcher completely and reinstalled. Restored my widgets and seeing what that does later.
Happened twice. Once with unrooted stock, once with cm10.1. So i think this is an hw problem.
my battery screen looks exactly like this after SOD: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35139
in my case long pressing to power button boots the device. no need to charger or button combo.
Forgot I posted here. I forgot to follow up. It turned out for me, there was a bad browser commit in the PA build in early March. I since reverted to a working nandroid and flashed the most recent rom. For others,I suggest to backup your apps and do a wipe. If that doesn't work, then maybe a factory reset?
i realized my SOD's occur at ~13:30 (1:30pm). Uninstalled a few apps(dash clock, rotation widget) and SOD's stopped. But today installed Onavo compression app than, bam!, SOD again(at 13:30 of course).

Basically the stock stuff was crashing the rom and causing the sleep of death. Have been fine ever since I reverted back to a working nandroid and dirty flashed the updated ones.
I am currently using the new version of pacman and it happened to me two nights ago.I reflashed and downloaded sleep of death fix app for charging. But I want to be 100% sure it won't happen again because I depend heavily on my nexus 4 for alarm. How can I be sure?

I just posted in the Android issue tracker this fix for nexus 4 SOD that worked for me :
It looks like there are different types of Nexus 4 freezing behaviour, all being lumped under the description: SOD.
My device (reliably) SODs after extendeded USB charging the very first time it sleeps; never happens while actually charging, just immediately upon disconnection; and it never happens in other circumstances.
However, I believe I now have a fix. If I only charge with a QI wireless charger OR if charging via USB, immediately sync with a QI charger upon disconnection, I never (it's been over a week now vs. every morning before) get a SOD.
Try this if you have the exact same problem I had. QI chargers are now available on eBay for less than £4 shipped.
NOTE: if you have a different sort of SOD issue, this may not work for you.
My nexus 4 was bought about one month after it was released .
I didn't have this issue in the first three months ,but recently ,about in the past one month ,it occurred kind of frequently and randomly.
Here is the issue:
I lock the screen and leave it there without using .When I am ready to use it ,I cannot awaken the screen even after I press the power button several times, both short and long press ,as if my phone was powered off ,even though I know its power is still 50 percent or so. After a series of random press ,I give it a long press ,then it gets rebooting .
I have been searching on the internet and many Nexus 4 users have this issue ,however, nobody can tell exactly what causes this problem .Some say it is caused by snapdragon batteryguru and some say the battery is not firmly installed .
I don't know whether you guys have ever come across this issue ,what is your analysis about it and how you solve this boring problem...
Glad to see that I can find solutions here...
My nexus is running original android 4.2.2 and is not rooted.
sleep of death. long press (10-20 seconds) powers off/reboots the phone. can be caused by phones software, undervolting and apps.
